1NELL'anno terzo del regno di Gioiachim, re di Giuda, Nebucadnesar, re di Babilonia, venne contro a Gerusalemme, e l'assediò.
2E il Signore diede in man sua Gioiachim, re di Giuda, ed una parte degli arredi della Casa di Dio; ed egli li condusse nel paese di Sinear, nella casa de' suoi dii; e portò quegli arredi nella casa del tesoro de' suoi dii.
3E il re disse ad Aspenaz, capo de' suoi eunuchi, che, d'infra i figliuoli d'Israele, e del sangue reale, e de' principi,
4ne menasse de' fanciulli, in cui non fosse alcun difetto, belli d'aspetto, e intendenti in ogni sapienza, e saputi in iscienza, e dotati d'avvedimento, e di conoscimento, e prodi della persona, per istare nel palazzo del re; e che s'insegnassero loro le lettere, e la lingua de' Caldei.
5E il re assegnò loro una certa provvisione per giorno, delle vivande reali, e del vino del suo bere; e ordinò ancora che si allevassero lo spazio di tre anni, in capo de' quali stessero davanti al re.
6Or fra essi furono, de' figliuoli di Giuda, Daniele, Anania, Misael, ed Azaria.
7Ma il capo degli eunuchi pose loro altri nomi: a Daniele pose nome Beltsasar; e ad Anania, Sadrac; ed a Misael, Mesac; e ad Azaria, Abed-nego.
8Or Daniele si mise in cuore di non contaminarsi con le vivande del re, nè col vino del suo bere; e richiese il capo degli eunuchi che gli fosse permesso di non contaminarsi.
9E Iddio fece trovare a Daniele grazia, e pietà appresso il capo degli eunuchi.
10Ma il capo degli eunuchi disse a Daniele: Io temo il re, mio signore, il quale ha ordinato il vostro cibo, e le vostre bevande; imperocchè, perchè s'egli vedesse le vostre facce più triste di quelle degli altri fanciulli, pari vostri, vorreste voi rendermi colpevole di fallo capitale inverso il re?
11Ma Daniele disse al Melsar, il quale il capo degli eunuchi avea costituito sopra Daniele, Anania, Misael, ed Azaria:
12Deh! fa' prova dei tuoi servitori lo spazio di dieci giorni; e sienci dati de' legumi da mangiare, e dell'acqua da bere.
13E poi sieno riguardate in presenza tua le nostre facce, e quelle de' fanciulli che mangiano delle vivande reali; e allora fa' co' tuoi servitori, come tu avviserai.
14Ed egli acconsentì loro, e fece prova di essi per dieci giorni.
15E in capo de' dieci giorni, le lor facce apparvero più belle, e più piene di carne, che quelle di tutti gli altri fanciulli che mangiavano le vivande reali.
16Laonde il Melsar da quel dì innanzi prendeva le lor vivande, e il vino del lor bere, e dava lor de' legumi.
17E Iddio donò a tutti e quattro quei fanciulli conoscimento, e intendimento in ogni letteratura e sapienza; e rendette Daniele intendente in ogni visione, ed in sogni.
18E in capo del tempo, che il re avea detto che que' fanciulli gli fosser menati, il capo degli eunuchi li menò nel cospetto di Nebucadnesar.
19E il re parlò con loro; ma fra essi tutti non si trovò alcuno simile a Daniele, ad Anania, a Misael, e ad Azaria; ed essi stettero nella presenza del re.
20E in ogni affare di sapienza, e d'intendimento, del quale il re li domandasse, li trovò sopravanzar per dieci volte tutti i magi, e gli astrologi, ch'erano in tutto il suo regno.
21E Daniele fu così fino all'anno primo del re Ciro.

1EN el año tercero del reinado de Joacim rey de Judá, vino Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia á Jerusalem, y cercóla.
2Y el Señor entregó en sus manos á Joacim rey de Judá, y parte de los vasos de la casa de Dios, y trájolos á tierra de Sinar, á la casa de su dios: y metió los vasos en la casa del tesoro de su dios.
3Y dijo el rey á Aspenaz, príncipe de sus eunucos, que trajese de los hijos de Israel, del linaje real de los príncipes,
4Muchachos en quienes no hubiese tacha alguna, y de buen parecer, y enseñados en toda sabiduría, y sabios en ciencia, y de buen entendimiento, é idóneos para estar en el palacio del rey; y que les enseñase las letras y la lengua de los Caldeos.
5Y señalóles el rey ración para cada día de la ración de la comida del rey, y del vino de su beber: que los criase tres años, para que al fin de ellos estuviesen delante del rey.
6Y fueron entre ellos, de los hijos de Judá, Daniel, Ananías, Misael y Azarías:
7A los cuales el príncipe de los eunucos puso nombres: y puso á Daniel, Beltsasar; y á Ananías, Sadrach; y á Misael, Mesach; y á Azarías, Abed-nego.
8Y Daniel propuso en su corazón de no contaminarse en la ración de la comida del rey, ni en el vino de su beber: pidió por tanto al príncipe de los eunucos de no contaminarse.
9(Y puso Dios á Daniel en gracia y en buena voluntad con el príncipe de los eunucos.)
10Y dijo el príncipe de los eunucos á Daniel: Tengo temor de mi señor el rey, que señaló vuestra comida y vuestra bebida; pues luego que él habrá visto vuestros rostros más tristes que los de los muchachos que son semejantes á vosotros, condenaréis para con el rey mi cabeza.
11Entonces dijo Daniel á Melsar, que estaba puesto por el príncipe de los eunucos sobre Daniel, Ananías, Misael, y Azarías:
12Prueba, te ruego, tus siervos diez días, y dennos legumbres á comer, y agua á beber.
13Parezcan luego delante de ti nuestros rostros, y los rostros de los muchachos que comen de la ración de la comida del rey; y según que vieres, harás con tus siervos.
14Consintió pues con ellos en esto, y probó con ellos diez días.
15Y al cabo de los diez días pareció el rostro de ellos mejor y más nutrido de carne, que los otros muchachos que comían de la ración de la comida del rey.
16Así fué que Melsar tomaba la ración de la comida de ellos, y el vino de su beber, y dábales legumbres.
17Y á estos cuatro muchachos dióles Dios conocimiento é inteligencia en todas letras y ciencia: mas Daniel tuvo entendimiento en toda visión y sueños.
18Pasados pues los días al fin de los cuales había dicho el rey que los trajesen, el príncipe de los eunucos los trajo delante de Nabucodonosor.
19Y el rey habló con ellos, y no fué hallado entre todos ellos otro como Daniel, Ananías, Misael, y Azarías: y así estuvieron delante del rey.
20Y en todo negocio de sabiduría é inteligencia que el rey les demandó, hallólos diez veces mejores que todos los magos y astrólogos que había en todo su reino.
21Y fué Daniel hasta el año primero del rey Ciro.

1In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it.
2And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God: which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.
3And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of the king’s seed, and of the princes;
4Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king’s palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.
5And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king’s meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.
6Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:
7Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names: for he gave unto Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abed-nego.
8But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
9Now God had brought Daniel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs.
10And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? then shall ye make me endanger my head to the king.
11Then said Daniel to Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,
12Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.
13Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king’s meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants.
14So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten days.
15And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king’s meat.
16Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse.
17As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.
18Now at the end of the days that the king had said he should bring them in, then the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.
19And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king.
20And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.
21And Daniel continued even unto the first year of king Cyrus.

1In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it.
2The Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with some of the vessels of the house of God; and he carried them into the land of Shinar to the house of his god. He brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.
3The king spoke to Ashpenaz, the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring in some of the children of Israel, even of the royal offspring and of the nobles:
4youths in whom was no defect, but well-favored, skillful in all wisdom, endowed with knowledge, understanding science, and who had the ability to stand in the king’s palace; and that he should teach them the learning and the language of the Chaldeans.
5The king appointed for them a daily portion of the king’s delicacies and of the wine which he drank, and that they should be nourished three years, that at its end they should stand before the king.
6Now among these of the children of Judah were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.
7The prince of the eunuchs gave names to them: to Daniel he gave the name Belteshazzar; to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abednego.
8But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the king’s delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank. Therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
9Now God made Daniel find kindness and compassion in the sight of the prince of the eunuchs.
10The prince of the eunuchs said to Daniel, “I fear my lord the king, who has appointed your food and your drink. For why should he see your faces worse looking than the youths who are of your own age? Then you would endanger my head with the king.”
11Then Daniel said to the steward whom the prince of the eunuchs had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:
12“Test your servants, I beg you, ten days; and let them give us vegetables to eat and water to drink.
13Then let our faces be examined before you, and the face of the youths who eat of the king’s delicacies; and as you see, deal with your servants.”
14So he listened to them in this matter, and tested them for ten days.
15At the end of ten days, their faces appeared fairer and they were fatter in flesh than all the youths who ate of the king’s delicacies.
16So the steward took away their delicacies and the wine that they were given to drink, and gave them vegetables.
17Now as for these four youths, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom; and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.
18At the end of the days which the king had appointed for bringing them in, the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.
19The king talked with them; and among them all was found no one like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. Therefore they stood before the king.
20In every matter of wisdom and understanding concerning which the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters who were in all his realm.
21Daniel continued even to the first year of King Cyrus.
