Una noche, durante el segundo año de su reinado, el rey Nabucodonosor tuvo un sueño, y lo inquietó tanto que ya no pudo seguir durmiendo.
Y EN el segundo año del reinado de Nabucodonosor, soñó Nabucodonosor sueños, y perturbóse su espíritu, y su sueño se huyó de él.

Inmediatamente llamó a todos sus magos, encantadores, hechiceros y astrólogos, y les demandó le dijeran el significado de su sueño.
Y mandó el rey llamar magos, astrólogos, y encantadores, y Caldeos, para que mostrasen al rey sus sueños. Vinieron pues, y se presentaron delante del rey.

―Yo he tenido un sueño que me preocupa —les dijo mientras estaban reunidos delante de él—, díganme qué significa.

Entonces los astrólogos (hablando en arameo) dijeron al rey: ―Que viva por siempre el rey. Cuéntenos el sueño y entonces podremos decirle lo que significa.

Then spake the Chaldeans to the king in Syriack, O king, live for ever: tell thy servants the dream, and we will shew the interpretation.

Pero el rey respondió: ―Mi decisión está tomada. Si no me dicen lo que soñé y lo que significa, ordenaré que los corten en pedazos y que a sus casas las quemen hasta que queden convertidas en cenizas.
Respondió el rey y dijo á los Caldeos: El negocio se me fué: si no me mostráis el sueño y su declaración, seréis hechos cuartos, y vuestras casas serán puestas por muladares.
The king answered and said to the Chaldeans, The thing is gone from me: if ye will not make known unto me the dream, with the interpretation thereof, ye shall be cut in pieces, and your houses shall be made a dunghill.

Pero les daré muchos maravillosos regalos y honores si me dicen cuál fue el sueño y lo que significa. Así que, ¡empiecen!

Ellos dijeron de nuevo: ―Si Su Majestad nos cuenta el sueño, nosotros le diremos lo que significa.
Respondieron la segunda vez, y dijeron: Diga el rey el sueño á sus siervos, y mostraremos su declaración.
They answered again and said, Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will shew the interpretation of it.

El rey respondió contrariado: ―Mi decisión está tomada; ustedes lo saben y por eso quieren ganar tiempo.

¡Pero si no me cuentan el sueño, ya saben lo que les pasará! Ustedes se han puesto de acuerdo para decirme mentiras, deseando que algo pase y cambie mi decisión. Pero díganme lo que soñé y sabré que también me pueden decir su significado.
Si no me mostráis el sueño, una sola sentencia será de vosotros. Ciertamente preparáis respuesta mentirosa y perversa que decir delante de mí, entre tanto que se muda el tiempo: por tanto, decidme el sueño, para que yo entienda que me podéis mostrar su declaración.
But if ye will not make known unto me the dream, there is but one decree for you: for ye have prepared lying and corrupt words to speak before me, till the time be changed: therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that ye can shew me the interpretation thereof.

Los astrólogos respondieron al rey: ―¡No hay nadie en la tierra que pueda decirle a Su Majestad lo que soñó! ¡Y no hay rey, por grande y poderoso que sea, que pediría semejante cosa a ningún mago, hechicero o astrólogo!
Los Caldeos respondieron delante del rey, y dijeron: No hay hombre sobre la tierra que pueda declarar el negocio del rey: demás de esto, ningún rey, príncipe, ni señor, preguntó cosa semejante á ningún mago, ni astrólogo, ni Caldeo.
The Chaldeans answered before the king, and said, There is not a man upon the earth that can shew the king’s matter: therefore there is no king, lord, nor ruler, that asked such things at any magician, or astrologer, or Chaldean.
The Chaldeans answered the king and said, “There is not a man on the earth who can show the king’s matter, because no king, lord, or ruler has asked such a thing of any magician, enchanter, or Chaldean.
Lo que el rey pide es imposible. Nadie, salvo los dioses, puede decirle su sueño, y ellos no están aquí para ayudar.
Finalmente, el negocio que el rey demanda, es singular, ni hay quien lo pueda declarar delante del rey, salvo los dioses cuya morada no es con la carne.

Al oír esto, el rey se puso furioso, y ordenó ejecutar a todos los sabios de Babilonia.
Por esto el rey con ira y con grande enojo, mandó que matasen á todos los sabios de Babilonia.
For this cause the king was angry and very furious, and commanded to destroy all the wise men of Babylon.

Debido a estas órdenes, Daniel y sus compañeros fueron buscados para ser ejecutados junto con los demás sabios.
Y publicóse el mandamiento, y los sabios eran llevados á la muerte; y buscaron á Daniel y á sus compañeros para matarlos.
And the decree went forth that the wise men should be slain; and they sought Daniel and his fellows to be slain.

Cuando Arioc, el comandante de la guardia real, vino para matarlos, Daniel manejó la situación con mucho tacto y cuidado al preguntar:
Entonces Daniel habló avisada y prudentemente á Arioch, capitán de los de la guarda del rey, que había salido para matar los sabios de Babilonia.
Then Daniel answered with counsel and wisdom to Arioch the captain of the king’s guard, which was gone forth to slay the wise men of Babylon:

―¿Por qué ha dado el rey semejante orden? Entonces Arioc le contó lo que había sucedido.
Habló y dijo á Arioch capitán del rey: ¿Qué es la causa que este mandamiento se publica de parte del rey tan apresuradamente? Entonces Arioch declaró el negocio á Daniel.
He answered and said to Arioch the king’s captain, Why is the decree so hasty from the king? Then Arioch made the thing known to Daniel.

Así que Daniel pidió audiencia para hablar con el rey. Le dijo: ―Deme un poco de tiempo y yo le diré el sueño que tuvo y lo que significa.

Luego les pidió que suplicaran al Dios del Cielo que les mostrara su bondad diciéndoles el secreto, para que no murieran junto con los sabios babilonios.
Para demandar misericordias del Dios del cielo sobre este misterio, y que Daniel y sus compañeros no pereciesen con los otros sabios de Babilonia.
That they would desire mercies of the God of heaven concerning this secret; that Daniel and his fellows should not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.

Y esa noche, en una visión, Dios le reveló a Daniel lo que el rey había soñado. Entonces Daniel alabó al Dios del cielo,

diciendo: ―Digno de elogio sea el nombre de Dios en todos los tiempos, pues sólo él tiene toda la sabiduría y todo el poder.
Y Daniel habló, y dijo: Sea bendito el nombre de Dios de siglo hasta siglo: porque suya es la sabiduría y la fortaleza:
Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his:

Lo que pasa en el mundo está bajo su control. Él quita reyes y coloca a otros sobre sus tronos. Él da a los sabios sabiduría, y a los entendidos su inteligencia.
Y él es el que muda los tiempos y las oportunidades: quita reyes, y pone reyes: da la sabiduría á los sabios, y la ciencia á los entendidos:
And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:
He changes the times and the seasons. He removes kings and sets up kings. He gives wisdom to the wise, and knowledge to those who have understanding.
Él revela misterios profundos y sabe lo que se oculta en las sombras, aunque él mismo está rodeado de luz.

He revealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him.

¡Te doy gracias y declaro tu gran bondad, oh Dios de mis antepasados, pues me has dado sabiduría y poder! Me has concedido lo que te pedimos, nos has mostrado el sueño del rey.
A ti, oh Dios de mis padres, confieso y te alabo, que me diste sabiduría y fortaleza, y ahora me enseñaste lo que te pedimos; pues nos has enseñado el negocio del rey.
I thank thee, and praise thee, O thou God of my fathers, who hast given me wisdom and might, and hast made known unto me now what we desired of thee: for thou hast now made known unto us the king’s matter.

Entonces Daniel entró a ver a Arioc, a quien se le había ordenado ejecutar a los sabios de Babilonia, y le dijo: ―No los mates. Llévame al rey y yo le diré el significado del sueño.
Después de esto Daniel entró á Arioch, al cual el rey había puesto para matar á los sabios de Babilonia; fué, y díjole así: No mates á los sabios de Babilonia: llévame delante del rey, que yo mostraré al rey la declaración.
Therefore Daniel went in unto Arioch, whom the king had ordained to destroy the wise men of Babylon: he went and said thus unto him; Destroy not the wise men of Babylon: bring me in before the king, and I will shew unto the king the interpretation.
Therefore Daniel went in to Arioch, whom the king had appointed to destroy the wise men of Babylon. He went and said this to him: “Don’t destroy the wise men of Babylon. Bring me in before the king, and I will show to the king the interpretation.”
Arioc llevó a Daniel apresuradamente ante el rey y le dijo: ―¡He encontrado a uno de los judíos cautivos que puede darle a Su Majestad la interpretación del sueño!
Entonces Arioch llevó prestamente á Daniel delante del rey, y díjole así: Un varón de los trasportados de Judá he hallado, el cual declarará al rey la interpretación.
Then Arioch brought in Daniel before the king in haste, and said thus unto him, I have found a man of the captives of Judah, that will make known unto the king the interpretation.

El rey le dijo a Daniel, a quien también le llamaban Beltsasar: ―¿Es esto cierto? ¿Puedes tú hacerme conocer el sueño que tuve y lo que significa?
Respondió el rey, y dijo á Daniel, al cual llamaban Beltsasar: ¿Podrás tú hacerme entender el sueño que vi, y su declaración?
The king answered and said to Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, Art thou able to make known unto me the dream which I have seen, and the interpretation thereof?

Daniel respondió: ―Ningún sabio, astrólogo, mago o adivino puede descubrir al rey tales cosas,
Daniel respondió delante del rey, y dijo: El misterio que el rey demanda, ni sabios, ni astrólogos, ni magos, ni adivinos lo pueden enseñar al rey.
Daniel answered in the presence of the king, and said, The secret which the king hath demanded cannot the wise men, the astrologers, the magicians, the soothsayers, shew unto the king;

pero hay un Dios en el cielo capaz de revelar los secretos, y él le ha mostrado a usted, rey Nabucodonosor, lo que va a pasar en el futuro. Este fue su sueño y las visiones que tuvo mientras estaba en su cama:
Mas hay un Dios en los cielos, el cual revela los misterios, y él ha hecho saber al rey Nabucodonosor lo que ha de acontecer á cabo de días. Tu sueño, y las visiones de tu cabeza sobre tu cama, es esto:
But there is a God in heaven that revealeth secrets, and maketh known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days. Thy dream, and the visions of thy head upon thy bed, are these;
but there is a God in heaven who reveals secrets, and he has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will be in the latter days. Your dream and the visions of your head on your bed are these:
Mientras Su Majestad dormía, soñó los acontecimientos que están por venir. Entonces Dios le mostró en sueños lo que va a suceder.
Tú, oh rey, en tu cama subieron tus pensamientos por saber lo que había de ser en lo por venir; y el que revela los misterios te mostró lo que ha de ser.
As for thee, O king, thy thoughts came into thy mind upon thy bed, what should come to pass hereafter: and he that revealeth secrets maketh known to thee what shall come to pass.
“As for you, O king, your thoughts came on your bed, what should happen hereafter; and he who reveals secrets has made known to you what will happen.
Pero recuerde que no es porque yo sea más sabio que los demás seres humanos que conozco el secreto de su sueño, sino porque Dios quiere que entienda lo que usted cavilaba en su cama.
Y á mí ha sido revelado este misterio, no por sabiduría que en mí haya más que en todos los vivientes, sino para que yo notifique al rey la declaración, y que entendieses los pensamientos de tu corazón.
But as for me, this secret is not revealed to me for any wisdom that I have more than any living, but for their sakes that shall make known the interpretation to the king, and that thou mightest know the thoughts of thy heart.

»En su sueño, Su Majestad vio una enorme y poderosa estatua de un hombre, de un brillo extraordinario y aspecto terrible.
Tú, oh rey, veías, y he aquí una grande imagen. Esta imagen, que era muy grande, y cuya gloria era muy sublime, estaba en pie delante de ti, y su aspecto era terrible.
Thou, O king, sawest, and behold a great image. This great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before thee; and the form thereof was terrible.

La cabeza de la estatua estaba hecha del oro más puro; su pecho y sus brazos de plata; su vientre y sus muslos de bronce;

This image’s head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of silver, his belly and his thighs of brass,

Pero mientras Su Majestad miraba la estatua, una piedra que ninguna persona había tocado se desprendió y vino y golpeó los pies de la estatua.

Entonces toda la estatua se desplomó en una pila de hierro, arcilla, bronce, plata y oro; sus pedazos se hicieron polvo, y el viento se los llevó. Pero la piedra que había derribado la estatua llegó a ser una gran montaña, tan grande que cubrió toda la tierra.
Entonces fué también desmenuzado el hierro, el barro cocido, el metal, la plata y el oro, y se tornaron como tamo de las eras del verano: y levantólos el viento, y nunca más se les halló lugar. Mas la piedra que hirió á la imagen, fué hecha un gran monte, que hinchió toda la tierra.
Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshingfloors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them: and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.

»Este fue el sueño. Ahora le diré a Su Majestad lo que significa.
Este es el sueño: la declaración de él diremos también en presencia del rey.
This is the dream; and we will tell the interpretation thereof before the king.

Su Majestad tiene dominio sobre muchos reyes, pues el Dios del cielo le ha dado su reino, poder, fuerza y gloria.
Tú, oh rey, eres rey de reyes; porque el Dios del cielo te ha dado reino, potencia, y fortaleza, y majestad.
Thou, O king, art a king of kings: for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory.

Él ha hecho que Su Majestad gobierne sobre las provincias más distantes y aun los animales y las aves están bajo su control. Usted es la cabeza de oro.
Y todo lo que habitan hijos de hombres, bestias del campo, y aves del cielo, él ha entregado en tu mano, y te ha hecho enseñorear sobre todo ello: tú eres aquella cabeza de oro.
And wheresoever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the heaven hath he given into thine hand, and hath made thee ruler over them all. Thou art this head of gold.

Pero después que su reino haya llegado a su fin, otro reino de menor importancia surgirá para tomar su lugar. Y después que ese reino haya caído, otro reino, el tercero, representado por el vientre y muslos de bronce, se levantará para reinar sobre el mundo.
Y después de ti se levantará otro reino menor que tú; y otro tercer reino de metal, el cual se enseñoreará de toda la tierra.
And after thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee, and another third kingdom of brass, which shall bear rule over all the earth.
“After you, another kingdom will arise that is inferior to you; and another third kingdom of bronze, which will rule over all the earth.
»Después de este reino vendrá un gran reino, el cuarto, fuerte como el hierro. Y así como el hierro rompe y destroza todo lo que golpea, así este reino romperá y destrozará los reinos anteriores.
Y el reino cuarto será fuerte como hierro; y como el hierro desmenuza y doma todas las cosas, y como el hierro que quebranta todas estas cosas, desmenuzará y quebrantará.
And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things: and as iron that breaketh all these, shall it break in pieces and bruise.

Los pies y los dedos que usted vio, parte de hierro y parte de arcilla, muestran que más adelante este reino será dividido.
Y lo que viste de los pies y los dedos, en parte de barro cocido de alfarero, y en parte de hierro, el reino será dividido; mas habrá en él algo de fortaleza de hierro, según que viste el hierro mezclado con el tiesto de barro.
And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters’ clay, and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay.

Algunas partes de este reino serán tan fuertes como el hierro, mientras que otras serán débiles como la arcilla.
Y por ser los dedos de los pies en parte de hierro, y en parte de barro cocido, en parte será el reino fuerte, y en parte será frágil.

Esta mezcla de hierro con arcilla también muestra que estos reinos tratarán de fortalecerse formando alianzas entre ellos a través del casamiento mutuo entre miembros de las familias de la realeza; pero esta estrategia no tendrá éxito, pues el hierro y la arcilla no se mezclan.
Cuanto á aquello que viste, el hierro mezclado con tiesto de barro, mezclaránse con simiente humana, mas no se pegarán el uno con el otro, como el hierro no se mistura con el tiesto.
And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay.

»Durante el gobierno de estos reyes, el Dios del cielo establecerá un reino que jamás será destruido, al que nadie jamás podrá conquistar. Este reino de Dios destruirá a todos estos reinos, pero él mismo permanecerá estable para siempre.
Y en los días de estos reyes, levantará el Dios del cielo un reino que nunca jamás se corromperá: y no será dejado á otro pueblo este reino; el cual desmenuzará y consumirá todos estos reinos, y él permanecerá para siempre.
And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.

Este es el significado de la piedra que se desprendió de la montaña sin que ninguna persona la hubiera tocado; la piedra que convirtió en polvo todo el hierro, el bronce, la arcilla, la plata y el oro. Así el gran Dios ha mostrado a Su Majestad lo que sucederá en el futuro. El sueño es verdadero y su significado es cierto.
De la manera que viste que del monte fué cortada una piedra, no con manos, la cual desmenuzó al hierro, al metal, al tiesto, á la plata, y al oro; el gran Dios ha mostrado al rey lo que ha de acontecer en lo por venir: y el sueño es verdadero, y fiel su declaración.
Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure.

Entonces Nabucodonosor se postró ante Daniel y le rindió honores, y mandó a su pueblo a ofrecer y rendirle homenaje y esparcir perfumes delicados ante él.
Entonces el rey Nabucodonosor cayó sobre su rostro, y humillóse á Daniel, y mandó que le sacrificasen presentes y perfumes.

The king answered unto Daniel, and said, Of a truth it is, that your God is a God of gods, and a Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, seeing thou couldest reveal this secret.

Entonces el rey le dio a Daniel un alto rango y muchos regalos costosos y lo nombró gobernador de toda la provincia de Babilonia, además de jefe sobre todos sus sabios del reino.

Then Daniel requested of the king, and he set Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, over the affairs of the province of Babylon: but Daniel sat in the gate of the king.
