1IL re Belsasar fece un gran convito a mille de' suoi grandi, e bevea del vino in presenza di que' mille.
2E Belsasar, avendo assaporato il vino, comandò che fossero portati i vasi d'oro e d'argento, che Nebucadnesar, suo padre, avea tratti fuor del Tempio, ch'era in Gerusalemme, acciocchè il re, e i suoi grandi, le sue mogli, e le sue concubine, vi bevessero dentro.
3Allora furono portati i vasi d'oro, ch'erano stati tratti fuor del Tempio della Casa del Signore, ch'era in Gerusalemme. E il re, e i suoi grandi, le sue mogli, e le sue concubine, vi bevvero dentro.
4Essi beveano del vino, e lodavano gl'iddii d'oro, e d'argento, di rame, di ferro, di legno, e di pietra.
5In quella stessa ora uscirono delle dita di man d'uomo, le quali scrivevano dirincontro al candelliere, in su lo smalto della parete del palazzo reale; e il re vide quel pezzo di mano che scriveva.
6Allora il color della faccia del re si mutò, e i suoi pensieri lo spaventarono, e i cinti de' suoi lombi si sciolsero, e le sue ginocchia si urtarono l'un contro all'altro.
7E il re gridò di forza che si facesser venire gli astrologi, i Caldei, e gl'indovini. E il re prese a dire a' savi di Babilonia: Chiunque leggerà questa scrittura, e me ne dichiarerà l'interpretazione, sarà vestito di porpora, e porterà una collana d'oro in collo, e sarà il terzo signore nel regno.
8Allora entrarono tutti i savi del re; ma non poterono leggere quella scrittura, nè dichiararne al re l'interpretazione.
9Allora il re Belsasar fu grandemente spaventato, e il color della sua faccia si mutò in lui; i suoi grandi ancora furono smarriti.
10La regina, alle parole del re, e de' suoi grandi, entrò nel luogo del convito, e fece motto al re, e gli disse: O re, possi tu vivere in perpetuo; i tuoi pensieri non ti spaventino, e il colore della tua faccia non si muti.
11Vi è un uomo nel tuo regno, in cui è lo spirito degl'iddii santi; e al tempo di tuo padre si trovò in lui illuminazione, ed intendimento, e sapienza, pari alla sapienza degl'iddii; e il re Nebucadnesar, tuo padre, o re, lo costituì capo de' magi, degli astrologi, de' Caldei, e degl'indovini.
12Conciossiachè in lui, che è Daniele, a cui il re avea posto nome Beltsasar, fosse stato trovato uno spirito eccellente, e conoscimento, e intendimento, per interpretar sogni, e per dichiarar detti oscuri, e per isciogliere enimmi. Ora chiamisi Daniele, ed egli dichiarerà l'interpretazione.
13Allora Daniele fu menato davanti al re. E il re fece motto a Daniele, e gli disse: Sei tu quel Daniele, che è de' Giudei che sono in cattività, i quali il re, mio padre, condusse di Giudea?
14Io ho inteso dir di te, che lo spirito degl'iddii santi è in te, e che si è trovata in te illuminazione, e intendimento, e sapienza eccellente.
15Or al presente i savi, e gli astrologi, sono stati menati davanti a me, affin di leggere questa scrittura, e dichiararmi la sua interpretazione; ma non possono dichiarar l'interpretazione della cosa.
16Ma io ho udito dir di te, che tu puoi dare interpretazioni, e sciogliere enimmi. Ora, se tu puoi legger questa scrittura, e dichiararmene l'interpretazione, tu sarai vestito di porpora, e porterai una collana d'oro in collo, e sarai il terzo signore nel regno.
17Allora Daniele rispose, e disse in presenza del re: Tienti i tuoi doni, e da' ad un altro i tuoi presenti; pur nondimeno io leggerò la scrittura al re, e gliene dichiarerò l'interpretazione.
18O tu re, l'Iddio altissimo avea dato regno, e grandezza, e gloria, e magnificenza, a Nebucadnesar, tuo padre;
19e per la grandezza, ch'egli gli avea data, tutti i popoli, nazioni, e lingue, tremavano, e temevano della sua presenza; egli uccideva chi egli voleva, ed altresì lasciava in vita chi egli voleva; egli innalzava chi gli piaceva, ed altresì abbassava chi gli piaceva.
20Ma, quando il cuor suo s'innalzò, e il suo spirito s'indurò, per superbire, fu tratto giù dal suo trono reale, e la sua gloria gli fu tolta.
21E fu scacciato d'infra gli uomini, e il cuor suo fu renduto simile a quel delle bestie, e la sua dimora fu con gli asini salvatichi; egli pascè l'erba come i buoi, e il suo corpo fu bagnato della rugiada del cielo, finchè riconobbe che l'Iddio altissimo signoreggia sopra il regno degli uomini, e ch'egli stabilisce sopra quello chi gli piace.
22Or tu, Belsasar, suo figliuolo, non hai umiliato il tuo cuore, con tutto che tu sapessi tutto ciò.
23Anzi ti sei innalzato contro al Signore del cielo, e sono stati portati davanti a te i vasi della sua Casa, e in quelli avete bevuto, tu, e i tuoi grandi, e le tue mogli, e le tue concubine; e tu hai lodati gl'iddii d'argento, d'oro, di rame, di ferro, di legno, e di pietra, i quali non veggono, e non odono, e non hanno conoscimento alcuno; e non hai glorificato Iddio, nella cui mano è l'anima tua, ed a cui appartengono tutte le tue vie.
24Allora da parte sua è stato mandato quel pezzo di mano, ed è stata disegnata quella scrittura.
25Or quest'è la scrittura ch'è stata disegnata: MENE, MENE, TECHEL, UPHARSIN.
26Questa è l'interpretazione delle parole: MENE: Iddio ha fatto ragione del tuo regno, e l'ha saldata.
27TECHEL: tu sei stato pesato alle bilance, e sei stato trovato mancante.
28PERES: il tuo regno è messo in pezzi, ed è dato a' Medi, ed a' Persiani.
29Allora, per comandamento di Belsasar, Daniele fu vestito di porpora, e portò in collo una collana d'oro; e per bando pubblico egli fu dichiarato il terzo signore nel regno.
30In quella stessa notte Belsasar, re dei Caldei, fu ucciso.
31E Dario Medo ricevette il regno, essendo d'età d'intorno a sessantadue anni.

1EL rey Belsasar hizo un gran banquete á mil de sus príncipes, y en presencia de los mil bebía vino.
2Belsasar, con el gusto del vino, mandó que trajesen los vasos de oro y de plata que Nabucodonosor su padre había traído del templo de Jerusalem; para que bebiesen con ellos el rey y sus príncipes, sus mujeres y sus concubinas.
3Entonces fueron traídos los vasos de oro que habían traído del templo de la casa de Dios que estaba en Jerusalem, y bebieron con ellos el rey y sus príncipes, sus mujeres y sus concubinas.
4Bebieron vino, y alabaron á los dioses de oro y de plata, de metal, de hierro, de madera, y de piedra.
5En aquella misma hora salieron unos dedos de mano de hombre, y escribían delante del candelero sobre lo encalado de la pared del palacio real, y el rey veía la palma de la mano que escribía.
6Entonces el rey se demudó de su color, y sus pensamientos lo turbaron, y desatáronse las ceñiduras de sus lomos, y sus rodillas se batían la una con la otra.
7El rey clamó en alta voz que hiciesen venir magos, Caldeos, y adivinos. Habló el rey, y dijo á los sabios de Babilonia: Cualquiera que leyere esta escritura, y me mostrare su declaración, será vestido de púrpura, y tendrá collar de oro á su cuello; y en el reino se enseñoreará el tercero.
8Entonces fueron introducidos todos los sabios del rey, y no pudieron leer la escritura, ni mostrar al rey su declaración.
9Entonces el rey Belsasar fué muy turbado, y se le mudaron sus colores y alteráronse sus príncipes.
10La reina, por las palabras del rey y de sus príncipes, entró á la sala del banquete. Y habló la reina, y dijo: Rey, para siempre vive, no te asombren tus pensamientos, ni tus colores se demuden:
11En tu reino hay un varón, en el cual mora el espíritu de los dioses santos; y en los días de tu padre se halló en él luz é inteligencia y sabiduría, como ciencia de los dioses: al cual el rey Nabucodonosor, tu padre, el rey tu padre constituyó príncipe sobre todos los magos, astrólogos, Caldeos, y adivinos:
12Por cuanto fué hallado en él mayor espíritu, y ciencia, y entendimiento, interpretando sueños, y declarando preguntas, y deshaciendo dudas, es á saber, en Daniel; al cual el rey puso por nombre Beltsasar. Llámese pues ahora á Daniel, y él mostrará la declaración.
13Entonces Daniel fué traído delante del rey. Y habló el rey, y dijo á Daniel: ¿Eres tú aquel Daniel de los hijos de la cautividad de Judá, que mi padre trajo de Judea?
14Yo he oído de ti que el espíritu de los dioses santos está en ti, y que en ti se halló luz, y entendimiento y mayor sabiduría.
15Y ahora fueron traídos delante de mí, sabios, astrólogos, que leyesen esta escritura, y me mostrasen su interpretación: pero no han podido mostrar la declaración del negocio.
16Yo pues he oído de ti que puedes declarar las dudas, y desatar dificultades. Si ahora pudieres leer esta escritura, y mostrarme su interpretación, serás vestido de púrpura, y collar de oro tendrás en tu cuello, y en el reino serás el tercer señor.
17Entonces Daniel respondió, y dijo delante del rey: Tus dones sean para ti, y tus presentes dalos á otro. La escritura yo la leeré al rey, y le mostraré la declaración.
18El altísimo Dios, oh rey, dió á Nabucodonosor tu padre el reino, y la grandeza, y la gloria, y la honra:
19Y por la grandeza que le dió, todos los pueblos, naciones, y lenguas, temblaban y temían delante de él. Los que él quería mataba, y daba vida á los que quería: engrandecía á los que quería, y á los que quería humillaba.
20Mas cuando su corazón se ensoberbeció, y su espíritu se endureció en altivez, fué depuesto del trono de su reino, y traspasaron de él la gloria:
21Y fué echado de entre los hijos de los hombres; y su corazón fué puesto con las bestias, y con los asnos monteses fué su morada. Hierba le hicieron comer, como á buey, y su cuerpo fué bañado con el rocío del cielo, hasta que conoció que el altísimo Dios se enseñorea del reino de los hombres, y que pondrá sobre él al que quisiere.
22Y tú, su hijo Belsasar, no has humillado tu corazón, sabiendo todo esto:
23Antes contra el Señor del cielo te has ensoberbecido, é hiciste traer delante de ti los vasos de su casa, y tú y tus príncipes, tus mujeres y tus concubinas, bebisteis vino en ellos: demás de esto, á dioses de plata y de oro, de metal, de hierro, de madera, y de piedra, que ni ven, ni oyen, ni saben, diste alabanza: y al Dios en cuya mano está tu vida, y cuyos son todos tus caminos, nunca honraste.
24Entonces de su presencia fué enviada la palma de la mano que esculpió esta escritura.
25Y la escritura que esculpió es: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.
26La declaración del negocio es: MENE: Contó Dios tu reino, y halo rematado.
27TEKEL: Pesado has sido en balanza, y fuiste hallado falto.
28PERES: Tu reino fué rompido, y es dado á Medos y Persas.
29Entonces, mandándolo Belsasar, vistieron á Daniel de púrpura, y en su cuello fué puesto un collar de oro, y pregonaron de él que fuese el tercer señor en el reino.
30La misma noche fué muerto Belsasar, rey de los Caldeos.
31Y Darío de Media tomó el reino, siendo de sesenta y dos años.

1Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand.
2Belshazzar, whiles he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, might drink therein.
3Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem; and the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, drank in them.
4They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone.
5In the same hour came forth fingers of a man’s hand, and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaister of the wall of the king’s palace: and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.
6Then the king’s countenance was changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees smote one against another.
7The king cried aloud to bring in the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. And the king spake, and said to the wise men of Babylon, Whosoever shall read this writing, and shew me the interpretation thereof, shall be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about his neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.
8Then came in all the king’s wise men: but they could not read the writing, nor make known to the king the interpretation thereof.
9Then was king Belshazzar greatly troubled, and his countenance was changed in him, and his lords were astonied.
10Now the queen, by reason of the words of the king and his lords, came into the banquet house: and the queen spake and said, O king, live for ever: let not thy thoughts trouble thee, nor let thy countenance be changed:
11There is a man in thy kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of thy father light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, was found in him; whom the king Nebuchadnezzar thy father, the king, I say, thy father, made master of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers;
12Forasmuch as an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and shewing of hard sentences, and dissolving of doubts, were found in the same Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar: now let Daniel be called, and he will shew the interpretation.
13Then was Daniel brought in before the king. And the king spake and said unto Daniel, Art thou that Daniel, which art of the children of the captivity of Judah, whom the king my father brought out of Jewry?
14I have even heard of thee, that the spirit of the gods is in thee, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom is found in thee.
15And now the wise men, the astrologers, have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing, and make known unto me the interpretation thereof: but they could not shew the interpretation of the thing:
16And I have heard of thee, that thou canst make interpretations, and dissolve doubts: now if thou canst read the writing, and make known to me the interpretation thereof, thou shalt be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about thy neck, and shalt be the third ruler in the kingdom.
17Then Daniel answered and said before the king, Let thy gifts be to thyself, and give thy rewards to another; yet I will read the writing unto the king, and make known to him the interpretation.
18O thou king, the most high God gave Nebuchadnezzar thy father a kingdom, and majesty, and glory, and honour:
19And for the majesty that he gave him, all people, nations, and languages, trembled and feared before him: whom he would he slew; and whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he set up; and whom he would he put down.
20But when his heart was lifted up, and his mind hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him:
21And he was driven from the sons of men; and his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild asses: they fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven; till he knew that the most high God ruled in the kingdom of men, and that he appointeth over it whomsoever he will.
22And thou his son, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled thine heart, though thou knewest all this;
23But hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified:
24Then was the part of the hand sent from him; and this writing was written.
25And this is the writing that was written, MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.
26This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE; God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it.
27TEKEL; Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting.
28PERES; Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.
29Then commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with scarlet, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.
30In that night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain.
31And Darius the Median took the kingdom, being about threescore and two years old.

6Then the king’s face was changed in him, and his thoughts troubled him; and the joints of his thighs were loosened, and his knees struck one against another.
7The king cried aloud to bring in the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. The king spoke and said to the wise men of Babylon, “Whoever reads this writing and shows me its interpretation shall be clothed with purple, and have a chain of gold about his neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.”
8Then all the king’s wise men came in; but they could not read the writing, and couldn’t make known to the king the interpretation.
9Then King Belshazzar was greatly troubled, and his face was changed in him, and his lords were perplexed.
10The queen by reason of the words of the king and his lords came into the banquet house. The queen spoke and said, “O king, live forever; don’t let your thoughts trouble you, nor let your face be changed.
11There is a man in your kingdom in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of your father, light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, were found in him. The king, Nebuchadnezzar, your father—yes, the king, your father—made him master of the magicians, enchanters, Chaldeans, and soothsayers,
12because an excellent spirit, knowledge, understanding, interpreting of dreams, showing of dark sentences, and dissolving of doubts were found in the same Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar. Now let Daniel be called, and he will show the interpretation.”
13Then Daniel was brought in before the king. The king spoke and said to Daniel, “Are you that Daniel of the children of the captivity of Judah, whom the king my father brought out of Judah?
14I have heard of you, that the spirit of the gods is in you and that light, understanding, and excellent wisdom are found in you.
15Now the wise men, the enchanters, have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing, and make known to me its interpretation; but they could not show the interpretation of the thing.
16But I have heard of you, that you can give interpretations and dissolve doubts. Now if you can read the writing and make known to me its interpretation, you shall be clothed with purple, and have a chain of gold around your neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.”
17Then Daniel answered before the king, “Let your gifts be to yourself, and give your rewards to another. Nevertheless, I will read the writing to the king, and make known to him the interpretation.
18“To you, king, the Most High God gave Nebuchadnezzar your father the kingdom, and greatness, and glory, and majesty.
19Because of the greatness that he gave him, all the peoples, nations, and languages trembled and feared before him. He killed whom he wanted to, and he kept alive whom he wanted to. He raised up whom he wanted to, and he put down whom he wanted to.
20But when his heart was lifted up, and his spirit was hardened so that he dealt proudly, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him.
21He was driven from the sons of men, and his heart was made like the animals’, and his dwelling was with the wild donkeys. He was fed with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of the sky, until he knew that the Most High God rules in the kingdom of men, and that he sets up over it whomever he will.
22“You, his son, Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart, though you knew all this,
23but have lifted up yourself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before you, and you and your lords, your wives, and your concubines, have drunk wine from them. You have praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood, and stone, which don’t see, or hear, or know; and you have not glorified the God in whose hand your breath is, and whose are all your ways.
24Then the part of the hand was sent from before him, and this writing was inscribed.
25“This is the writing that was inscribed: ‘MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.’
26“This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE: God has counted your kingdom, and brought it to an end.
27TEKEL: you are weighed in the balances, and are found wanting.
28PERES: your kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.”
29Then Belshazzar commanded, and they clothed Daniel with purple, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.
30In that night Belshazzar the Chaldean King was slain.
31Darius the Mede received the kingdom, being about sixty-two years old.
