Vanité des vanités, dit l’Ecclésiaste, vanité des vanités, tout est vanité.

Vanidad de vanidades, dijo el Predicador; vanidad de vanidades, todo vanidad.

Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.

“Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher; “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.”

Quel avantage revient-il à l’homme de toute la peine qu’il se donne sous le soleil?

¿Qué provecho tiene el hombre de todo su trabajo con que se afana debajo del sol?

What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?

What does man gain from all his labor in which he labors under the sun?

Une génération s’en va, une autre vient, et la terre subsiste toujours.

Generación va, y generación viene: mas la tierra siempre permanece.

One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.

One generation goes, and another generation comes; but the earth remains forever.

Le soleil se lève, le soleil se couche; il soupire après le lieu d’où il se lève de nouveau.

Y sale el sol, y pónese el sol, y con deseo vuelve á su lugar donde torna á nacer.

The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.

The sun also rises, and the sun goes down, and hurries to its place where it rises.

Le vent se dirige vers le midi, tourne vers le nord; puis il tourne encore, et reprend les mêmes circuits.

El viento tira hacia el mediodía, y rodea al norte; va girando de continuo, y á sus giros torna el viento de nuevo.

The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits.

The wind goes toward the south, and turns around to the north. It turns around continually as it goes, and the wind returns again to its courses.

Tous les fleuves vont à la mer, et la mer n’est point remplie; ils continuent à aller vers le lieu où ils se dirigent.

Los ríos todos van á la mar, y la mar no se hinche; al lugar de donde los ríos vinieron, allí tornan para correr de nuevo.

All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.

Toutes choses sont en travail au-delà de ce qu’on peut dire; l’œil ne se rassasie pas de voir, et l’oreille ne se lasse pas d’entendre.

Todas las cosas andan en trabajo más que el hombre pueda decir: ni los ojos viendo se hartan de ver, ni los oídos se hinchen de oir.

All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

All things are full of weariness beyond uttering. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

Ce qui a été, c’est ce qui sera, et ce qui s’est fait, c’est ce qui se fera, il n’y a rien de nouveau sous le soleil.

¿Qué es lo que fué? Lo mismo que será. ¿Qué es lo que ha sido hecho? Lo mismo que se hará: y nada hay nuevo debajo del sol.

The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.

That which has been is that which shall be, and that which has been done is that which shall be done; and there is no new thing under the sun.

S’il est une chose dont on dise: Vois ceci, c’est nouveau! Cette chose existait déjà dans les siècles qui nous ont précédés.

¿Hay algo de que se pueda decir: He aquí esto es nuevo? Ya fué en los siglos que nos han precedido.

Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.

Is there a thing of which it may be said, “Behold, this is new”? It has been long ago, in the ages which were before us.

On ne se souvient pas de ce qui est ancien; et ce qui arrivera dans la suite ne laissera pas de souvenir chez ceux qui vivront plus tard.

No hay memoria de lo que precedió, ni tampoco de lo que sucederá habrá memoria en los que serán después.

There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.

There is no memory of the former; neither shall there be any memory of the latter that are to come, among those that shall come after.

Moi, l’Ecclésiaste, j’ai été roi d’Israël à Jérusalem.

Yo el Predicador fuí rey sobre Israel en Jerusalem.

J’ai appliqué mon cœur à rechercher et à sonder par la sagesse tout ce qui se fait sous les cieux: c’est là une occupation pénible, à laquelle Dieu soumet les fils de l’homme.

Y dí mi corazón á inquirir y buscar con sabiduría sobre todo lo que se hace debajo del cielo: este penoso trabajo dió Dios á los hijos de los hombres, en que se ocupen.

And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith.

I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under the sky. It is a heavy burden that God has given to the sons of men to be afflicted with.

J’ai vu tout ce qui se fait sous le soleil; et voici, tout est vanité et poursuite du vent.

Yo miré todas las obras que se hacen debajo del sol; y he aquí, todo ello es vanidad y aflicción de espíritu.

I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.

Ce qui est courbé ne peut se redresser, et ce qui manque ne peut être compté.

Lo torcido no se puede enderezar; y lo falto no puede contarse.

That which is crooked cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.

That which is crooked can’t be made straight; and that which is lacking can’t be counted.

J’ai dit en mon cœur: Voici, j’ai grandi et surpassé en sagesse tous ceux qui ont dominé avant moi sur Jérusalem, et mon cœur a vu beaucoup de sagesse et de science.

Hablé yo con mi corazón, diciendo: He aquí hállome yo engrandecido, y he crecido en sabiduría sobre todos los que fueron antes de mí en Jerusalem; y mi corazón ha percibido muchedumbre de sabiduría y ciencia.

I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem: yea, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.

I said to myself, “Behold, I have obtained for myself great wisdom above all who were before me in Jerusalem. Yes, my heart has had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.”

J’ai appliqué mon cœur à connaître la sagesse, et à connaître la sottise et la folie; j’ai compris que cela aussi c’est la poursuite du vent.

Y dí mi corazón á conocer la sabiduría, y también á entender las locuras y los desvaríos: conocí que aun esto era aflicción de espíritu.

And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.

Car avec beaucoup de sagesse on a beaucoup de chagrin, et celui qui augmente sa science augmente sa douleur.

Porque en la mucha sabiduría hay mucha molestia; y quien añade ciencia, añade dolor.

For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.

For in much wisdom is much grief; and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.
