Tudo é ilusão, diz o Pregador. Tudo é ilusão. Tudo é inútil.

Vanidad de vanidades, dijo el Predicador; vanidad de vanidades, todo vanidad.

Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.

“Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher; “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.”

Qual é a vantagem que o homem consegue com o seu trabalho em que se esforça tanto debaixo do sol?

¿Qué provecho tiene el hombre de todo su trabajo con que se afana debajo del sol?

What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?

What does man gain from all his labor in which he labors under the sun?

Gente nasce e morre, mas a terra permanece para sempre.

Generación va, y generación viene: mas la tierra siempre permanece.

One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.

One generation goes, and another generation comes; but the earth remains forever.

O sol nasce e se põe e volta ao lugar de onde nasceu.

Y sale el sol, y pónese el sol, y con deseo vuelve á su lugar donde torna á nacer.

The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.

The sun also rises, and the sun goes down, and hurries to its place where it rises.

O vento sopra para o sul e para o norte, vai e vem, sopra aqui e ali, sem chegar a lugar algum.

El viento tira hacia el mediodía, y rodea al norte; va girando de continuo, y á sus giros torna el viento de nuevo.

The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits.

The wind goes toward the south, and turns around to the north. It turns around continually as it goes, and the wind returns again to its courses.

Os rios correm para o mar, mas o mar nunca fica cheio. A água volta para os rios e corre outra vez para o mar.

Los ríos todos van á la mar, y la mar no se hinche; al lugar de donde los ríos vinieron, allí tornan para correr de nuevo.

All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.

All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full. To the place where the rivers flow, there they flow again.

A vida é uma canseira, nem dá para descrever! Mesmo que vejamos tudo que existe, não ficamos satisfeitos; podemos ouvir todos os sons, mas nem assim ficamos contentes.

Todas las cosas andan en trabajo más que el hombre pueda decir: ni los ojos viendo se hartan de ver, ni los oídos se hinchen de oir.

All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

All things are full of weariness beyond uttering. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

A história sempre se repete. O que foi feito se fará outra vez. Na verdade, não há nada de novo debaixo do sol.

¿Qué es lo que fué? Lo mismo que será. ¿Qué es lo que ha sido hecho? Lo mismo que se hará: y nada hay nuevo debajo del sol.

The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.

That which has been is that which shall be, and that which has been done is that which shall be done; and there is no new thing under the sun.

Tudo já foi dito ou feito antes. Você pode mostrar alguma coisa nova? Como é que você sabe que isso não existiu há muito tempo?

¿Hay algo de que se pueda decir: He aquí esto es nuevo? Ya fué en los siglos que nos han precedido.

Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.

Is there a thing of which it may be said, “Behold, this is new”? It has been long ago, in the ages which were before us.

Não podemos nos lembrar do que aconteceu no passado e daqui a algum tempo ninguém vai se lembrar do que nós fizemos.

No hay memoria de lo que precedió, ni tampoco de lo que sucederá habrá memoria en los que serán después.

There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.

There is no memory of the former; neither shall there be any memory of the latter that are to come, among those that shall come after.

Eu, o Pregador, fui rei de Israel e morei em Jerusalém.

Yo el Predicador fuí rey sobre Israel en Jerusalem.

Eu me esforcei para aprender bem tudo e a usar a sabedoria para explorar o que existe no universo. Descobri que Deus sobrecarregou o homem com trabalhos pesados.

Y dí mi corazón á inquirir y buscar con sabiduría sobre todo lo que se hace debajo del cielo: este penoso trabajo dió Dios á los hijos de los hombres, en que se ocupen.

And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith.

I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under the sky. It is a heavy burden that God has given to the sons of men to be afflicted with.

Tenho visto tudo o que é feito debaixo do sol; a vida é uma ilusão, é correr atrás do vento.

Yo miré todas las obras que se hacen debajo del sol; y he aquí, todo ello es vanidad y aflicción de espíritu.

I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.

O que está torto não pode ser endireitado; o que falta não pode ser contado.

Lo torcido no se puede enderezar; y lo falto no puede contarse.

That which is crooked cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.

That which is crooked can’t be made straight; and that which is lacking can’t be counted.

Eu disse então para mim mesmo: “Bem, eu sou muito mais estudado que todos os reis que governaram Jerusalém. Na verdade, adquiri muita sabedoria e conhecimento”.

Hablé yo con mi corazón, diciendo: He aquí hállome yo engrandecido, y he crecido en sabiduría sobre todos los que fueron antes de mí en Jerusalem; y mi corazón ha percibido muchedumbre de sabiduría y ciencia.

I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem: yea, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.

I said to myself, “Behold, I have obtained for myself great wisdom above all who were before me in Jerusalem. Yes, my heart has had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.”

Por isso me esforcei bastante para ser sábio e conhecer a loucura e a insensatez, mas agora vejo que isso também é correr atrás do vento.

Y dí mi corazón á conocer la sabiduría, y también á entender las locuras y los desvaríos: conocí que aun esto era aflicción de espíritu.

And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.

Pois quanto maior a sabedoria, maior o sofrimento; quanto maior o conhecimento, maior a tristeza.

Porque en la mucha sabiduría hay mucha molestia; y quien añade ciencia, añade dolor.

For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.
