Vanidad de vanidades, dijo el Eclesiastés; vanidad de vanidades, y todo lo de acá abajo no es más que vanidad.
Vanidad de vanidades, dijo el Predicador; vanidad de vanidades, todo vanidad.
Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.
“Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher; “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.”
¿Qué saca el hombre de todo el trabajo con que se afana sobre la tierra o debajo de la capa del sol?
¿Qué provecho tiene el hombre de todo su trabajo con que se afana debajo del sol?
What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?
What does man gain from all his labor in which he labors under the sun?
Pasa una generación, y le sucede otra; mas la tierra queda siempre estable.
Generación va, y generación viene: mas la tierra siempre permanece.
One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.

Asimismo nace el sol y se pone, y vuelve a su lugar; y de allí renaciendo,
Y sale el sol, y pónese el sol, y con deseo vuelve á su lugar donde torna á nacer.

dirige su curso hacia el mediodía, y declina después hacia el norte; corre el viento soplando por toda la tierra, y vuelve a comenzar después sus giros.

The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits.

Todos los ríos entran en el mar, y el mar no rebosa; van los ríos a desaguar en el mar, lugar de donde salieron, para volver a correr de nuevo.
Los ríos todos van á la mar, y la mar no se hinche; al lugar de donde los ríos vinieron, allí tornan para correr de nuevo.

Todas las cosas del mundo son difíciles: no puede el hombre comprenderlas ni explicarlas con palabras. Nunca se harta el ojo de mirar, ni el oído de oír cosas nuevas.

¿Qué es lo que hasta aquí ha sido? Lo mismo que será. ¿Qué es lo que se ha hecho? Lo mismo que se ha de hacer.

The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.

Nada es nuevo en este mundo; ni puede nadie decir: He aquí una cosa nueva; porque ya existió en los siglos anteriores a nosotros.
¿Hay algo de que se pueda decir: He aquí esto es nuevo? Ya fué en los siglos que nos han precedido.
Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.

No queda memoria de las cosas pasadas; mas tampoco de las que están por venir habrá memoria de aquellos que vendrán después a lo último.

y propuse en mi corazón inquirir e investigar curiosamente acerca de todas las cosas que suceden debajo del sol. Esta ocupación penosísima ha dado Dios a los hijos de los hombres, para que trabajen en ella.
Y dí mi corazón á inquirir y buscar con sabiduría sobre todo lo que se hace debajo del cielo: este penoso trabajo dió Dios á los hijos de los hombres, en que se ocupen.
And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith.

Hablé yo con mi corazón, diciendo: He aquí hállome yo engrandecido, y he crecido en sabiduría sobre todos los que fueron antes de mí en Jerusalem; y mi corazón ha percibido muchedumbre de sabiduría y ciencia.
I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem: yea, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.
I said to myself, “Behold, I have obtained for myself great wisdom above all who were before me in Jerusalem. Yes, my heart has had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.”
aplicado he igualmente mi corazón al conocimiento de la prudencia, y de la doctrina, y de los errores y desaciertos. Mas he visto que aun esto mismo era todo trabajo y aflicción de espíritu.
Y dí mi corazón á conocer la sabiduría, y también á entender las locuras y los desvaríos: conocí que aun esto era aflicción de espíritu.
