Entonces dije yo en mi corazón: Iré a bañarme en delicias, y a gozar de los bienes presentes. Mas luego eché de ver que también esto es vanidad.
DIJE yo en mi corazón: Ven ahora, te probaré con alegría, y gozarás de bienes. Mas he aquí esto también era vanidad.

En seguida resolví en mi interior el negar a mi cuerpo el uso del vino y demás deleites, para dedicar mi ánimo a la sabiduría y evitar el error, hasta experimentar qué cosa sería la más útil a los hijos de los hombres; o en qué deben emplearse en este mundo en los pocos días que vivían en él.
Propuse en mi corazón agasajar mi carne con vino, y que anduviese mi corazón en sabiduría, con retención de la necedad, hasta ver cuál fuese el bien de los hijos de los hombres, en el cual se ocuparan debajo del cielo todos los días de su vida.
I sought in mine heart to give myself unto wine, yet acquainting mine heart with wisdom; and to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was that good for the sons of men, which they should do under the heaven all the days of their life.
I searched in my heart how to cheer my flesh with wine, my heart yet guiding me with wisdom, and how to lay hold of folly, until I might see what it was good for the sons of men that they should do under heaven all the days of their lives.
Yo mandé hacer magníficas obras, me edifiqué casas de placer, y planté viñas.

Amontoné plata y oro, y los tesoros de los reyes y de las provincias que sujetó mi padre. Escogí para mi palacio cantores o músicos, y cantoras, y cuanto sirve de deleite a los hijos de los hombres; vasos y jarros preciosos para servir el vino en mi mesa.
Alleguéme también plata y oro, y tesoro preciado de reyes y de provincias; híceme de cantores y cantoras, y los deleites de los hijos de los hombres, instrumentos músicos y de todas suertes.

Y sobrepujé en riquezas a todos los que vinieron antes de mí en Jerusalén . En medio de todo esto permaneció conmigo la sabiduría.

En suma, nunca negué a mis ojos nada de cuanto desearon; ni vedé a mi corazón el que gozase de todo género de deleites, y se recrease en las cosas que tenía yo preparadas; antes bien juzgué ser esta mi suerte el disfrutar de mi trabajo o industria.

Por tanto he cobrado tedio a mi propia vida, viendo que debajo del sol no hay más que males, y que todo es vanidad y aflicción de espíritu.

And who knoweth whether he shall be a wise man or a fool? yet shall he have rule over all my labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shewed myself wise under the sun. This is also vanity.

Llenos están de dolor y de amargura todos sus días; ni aún por la noche goza de reposo su alma. ¿Y no es esto una suma de vanidad o miseria?

¿No sería mejor comer y beber con sosiego, y regalarse con lo ganado a costa de sus fatigas? Pero este don viene de la mano de Dios.
