Volví todavía mi atención a otras cosas, y vi los actos de opresión que se cometen debajo del sol y las lágrimas de los inocentes, sin haber nadie que los consuele; y la imposibilidad en que se hallan de resistir a la violencia, estando como están destituidos de todo socorro.
Y TORNÉME yo, y vi todas las violencias que se hacen debajo del sol: y he aquí las lágrimas de los oprimidos, y sin tener quien los consuele; y la fuerza estaba en la mano de sus opresores, y para ellos no había consolador.

Pasé también a contemplar todas las obras o destinos de los hombres; y advertí que sus habilidades están expuestas a la envidia del prójimo, y que así aun en esto hay vanidad y cuidados inútiles.
Visto he asimismo que todo trabajo y toda excelencia de obras mueve la envidia del hombre contra su prójimo. También esto es vanidad y aflicción de espíritu.

Más vale un puñadito de bienes con descanso que las dos manos llenas con trabajo y aflicción de espíritu.

Reflexionando hallé aún otra vanidad debajo del sol:
Yo me torné otra vez, y vi vanidad debajo del sol.

Un hombre solo que no tiene heredero, ni hijo ni hermano; y sin embargo no cesa de afanarse, ni se hartan de bienes sus ojos; ni le ocurre el preguntarse a sí mismo: ¿Yo para quién trabajo? ¿Y por qué me privo del uso de estos bienes? Vanidad es ésta también y aflicción grandísima del ánimo.
