CUANDO fueres á la casa de Dios, guarda tu pie; y acércate más para oir que para dar el sacrificio de los necios: porque no saben que hacen mal.
Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God, and be more ready to hear, than to give the sacrifice of fools: for they consider not that they do evil.

Así como el exceso de ocupaciones produce pesadillas, la necedad te convierte en un necio que dice tonterías.
Porque de la mucha ocupación viene el sueño, y de la multitud de las palabras la voz del necio.

When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed.

Es mejor no decir que se va a hacer algo, que decirlo y no hacerlo.
Mejor es que no prometas, que no que prometas y no pagues.
Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay.
It is better that you should not vow, than that you should vow and not pay.
En este caso, la boca te hace pecar. No procures excusarte diciéndole al mensajero de Dios que fue por error (el hacer la promesa). Eso enojaría mucho a Dios; y él podría truncar tu prosperidad. Soñar y no realizar es necedad, y el torrente de palabras vacías es ruidoso; en vez de eso, teme a Dios.
No sueltes tu boca para hacer pecar á tu carne; ni digas delante del ángel, que fué ignorancia. ¿Por qué harás que Dios se aire á causa de tu voz, y que destruya la obra de tus manos?
Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; neither say thou before the angel, that it was an error: wherefore should God be angry at thy voice, and destroy the work of thine hands?
Don’t allow your mouth to lead you into sin. Don’t protest before the messenger that this was a mistake. Why should God be angry at your voice, and destroy the work of your hands?

Donde los sueños son en multitud, también lo son las vanidades y muchas las palabras; mas tú teme á Dios.

Si en cualquier parte del país ves que un rico oprime al pobre haciendo abortar la justicia, no te sorprendas. Pues cada subalterno recibe órdenes de más arriba, y los más altos oficiales tienen la mirada puesta en sus jefes. Así es que la cuestión se hace una maraña de papeleo y burocracia. Y por sobre todos está el rey.
Si violencias de pobres, y extorsión de derecho y de justicia vieres en la provincia, no te maravilles de esta licencia; porque alto está mirando sobre alto, y uno más alto está sobre ellos.
If thou seest the oppression of the poor, and violent perverting of judgment and justice in a province, marvel not at the matter: for he that is higher than the highest regardeth; and there be higher than they.

¡Ay, que hubiera un rey dedicado a su nación! Sólo él podría producir orden entre este caos.

Cuanto más se tiene, más se gasta, hasta el límite de los ingresos. Entonces, ¿qué ventaja da la riqueza; como no sea verla escaparse por entre los dedos?
Cuando los bienes se aumentan, también se aumentan sus comedores. ¿Qué bien, pues, tendrá su dueño, sino verlos con sus ojos?
When goods increase, they are increased that eat them: and what good is there to the owners thereof, saving the beholding of them with their eyes?

El que trabaja arduamente duerme tranquilo, coma poco o mucho; pero el rico padece de preocupaciones e insomnio.

Otro grave problema he observado por doquier: se invierten los ahorros en negocios arriesgados que fracasan, y pronto no queda nada para dejar a los hijos.

Esto, ya lo dijimos, es un grave problema, pues trabajó mucho para nada. Todo se lo lleva el viento.

Pasa el resto de su vida ensombrecido, triste, desalentado, frustrado y enojado.
Demás de esto, todos los días de su vida comerá en tinieblas, con mucho enojo y dolor y miseria.

Es esto lo que he visto de bueno: corresponde al ser humano comer bien, beber su buen vaso de vino, aceptar su puesto en la vida y disfrutar de su trabajo sea cual sea su empleo, por el tiempo de vida que el Señor le conceda.
He aquí pues el bien que yo he visto: Que lo bueno es comer y beber, y gozar uno del bien de todo su trabajo con que se fatiga debajo del sol, todos los días de su vida que Dios le ha dado; porque esta es su parte.

Y, naturalmente, está muy bien. Si Dios le ha dado al ser humano riqueza y salud es para que lo disfrute. Gustar de nuestro trabajo y aceptar la suerte que la vida nos deparó, es en verdad un don de Dios. Quien tal haga no tendrá que mirar triste hacia el pasado, pues Dios llenará de gozo su corazón.
Asimismo, á todo hombre á quien Dios dió riquezas y hacienda, y le dió también facultad para que coma de ellas, y tome su parte, y goce su trabajo; esto es don de Dios.
