Mieux vaut une bonne renommée que le bon parfum, et le jour de la mort que le jour de la naissance.

MEJOR es la buena fama que el buen ungüento; y el día de la muerte que el día del nacimiento.

A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one’s birth.

Mieux vaut aller dans la maison de deuil, que d’aller dans la maison de festin, en ce que là est la fin de tout homme ; et le vivant prend cela à cœur.

Mieux vaut la fin d’une chose que son commencement. Mieux vaut un esprit patient qu’un esprit hautain.

Ne te hâte pas en ton esprit pour t’irriter, car l’irritation repose dans le sein des sots.

Ne dis pas : Comment se fait-il que les jours précédents ont été meilleurs que ceux-ci ? car ce n’est pas par sagesse que tu t’enquiers de cela.

Nunca digas: ¿Qué es la causa que los tiempos pasados fueron mejores que éstos? Porque nunca de esto preguntarás con sabiduría.

Say not thou, What is the cause that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not enquire wisely concerning this.

Don’t say, “Why were the former days better than these?” For you do not ask wisely about this.

La sagesse est aussi bonne qu’un héritage, et profitable pour ceux qui voient le soleil ;

Buena es la ciencia con herencia; y más á los que ven el sol.

Wisdom is good with an inheritance: and by it there is profit to them that see the sun.

Wisdom is as good as an inheritance. Yes, it is more excellent for those who see the sun.

car on est à l’ombre de la sagesse †comme à l’ombre de l’argent ; mais l’avantage de la connaissance, †c’est que la sagesse fait vivre celui qui la possède.

Porque escudo es la ciencia, y escudo es el dinero: mas la sabiduría excede en que da vida á sus poseedores.

For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it.

Considère l’œuvre de Dieu, car qui peut redresser ce qu’il a tordu ?

Mira la obra de Dios; porque ¿quién podrá enderezar lo que él torció?

Au jour du bien-être, jouis du bien-être, et, au jour de l’adversité, prends garde ; car Dieu a placé l’un vis-à-vis de l’autre, afin que l’homme ne trouve rien †de ce qui sera après lui.

En el día del bien goza del bien; y en el día del mal considera. Dios también hizo esto delante de lo otro, porque el hombre no halle nada tras de él.

In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: God also hath set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him.

J’ai vu tout †cela dans les jours de ma vanité : il y a tel juste qui périt par sa justice, et il y a tel méchant qui prolonge †ses jours par son iniquité.

Todo esto he visto en los días de mi vanidad. Justo hay que perece por su justicia, y hay impío que por su maldad alarga sus días.

All things have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness.

All this I have seen in my days of vanity: there is a righteous man who perishes in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man who lives long in his evildoing.

Ne sois pas juste à l’excès, et ne fais pas le sage outre mesure ; pourquoi te détruirais-tu ?

No seas demasiado justo, ni seas sabio con exceso: ¿por qué te destruirás?

Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself?

Don’t be overly righteous, neither make yourself overly wise. Why should you destroy yourself?

Ne sois pas méchant à l’excès, et ne sois pas insensé ; pourquoi mourrais-tu avant ton temps ? –

No hagas mal mucho, ni seas insensato: ¿por qué morirás antes de tu tiempo?

Be not over much wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?

Don’t be too wicked, neither be foolish. Why should you die before your time?

Il est bon que tu saisisses ceci et que tu ne retires point ta main de cela ; car qui craint Dieu sort de tout.

Bueno es que tomes esto, y también de estotro no apartes tu mano; porque el que á Dios teme, saldrá con todo.

It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from this withdraw not thine hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth of them all.

It is good that you should take hold of this. Yes, also don’t withdraw your hand from that; for he who fears God will come out of them all.

La sagesse fortifie le sage plus que dix hommes puissants qui sont dans la ville.

La sabiduría fortifica al sabio más que diez poderosos la ciudad en que fueron.

Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty men which are in the city.

Wisdom is a strength to the wise man more than ten rulers who are in a city.

Certes, il n’y a pas d’homme juste sur la terre qui ait fait le bien et qui n’ait pas péché.

Ciertamente no hay hombre justo en la tierra, que haga bien y nunca peque.

For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.

Surely there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and doesn’t sin.

Aussi ne mets pas ton cœur à toutes les paroles qu’on dit, afin que tu n’entendes pas ton serviteur te maudissant.

Tampoco apliques tu corazón á todas las cosas que se hablaren, porque no oigas á tu siervo que dice mal de ti:

Also take no heed unto all words that are spoken; lest thou hear thy servant curse thee:

Also don’t take heed to all words that are spoken, lest you hear your servant curse you;

Car aussi ton cœur sait que bien des fois, toi aussi, tu as maudit les autres.

Porque tu corazón sabe, como tú también dijiste mal de otros muchas veces.

For oftentimes also thine own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.

for often your own heart knows that you yourself have likewise cursed others.

J’ai éprouvé tout cela par la sagesse ; j’ai dit : Je serai sage ; mais elle était loin de moi.

Todas estas cosas probé con sabiduría, diciendo: Hacerme he sabio: mas ella se alejó de mí.

All this have I proved by wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me.

Ce qui a été est loin et très profond, qui le trouvera ?

Lejos está lo que fué; y lo muy profundo ¿quién lo hallará?

That which is far off, and exceeding deep, who can find it out?

Je me suis mis, moi et mon cœur, à connaître et à explorer et à rechercher la sagesse et l’intelligence, et à connaître que la méchanceté est sottise, et la folie, déraison ;

Yo he rodeado con mi corazón por saber, y examinar, é inquirir la sabiduría, y la razón; y por conocer la maldad de la insensatez, y el desvarío del error;

I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason of things, and to know the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness and madness:

I turned around, and my heart sought to know and to search out, and to seek wisdom and the scheme of things, and to know that wickedness is stupidity, and that foolishness is madness.

et j’ai trouvé plus amère que la mort la femme dont le cœur est †comme des filets et des rets, †et dont les mains sont des chaînes : celui qui est agréable à Dieu lui échappera, mais celui qui pèche sera pris par elle.

Y yo he hallado más amarga que la muerte la mujer, la cual es redes, y lazos su corazón; sus manos como ligaduras. El que agrada á Dios escapará de ella; mas el pecador será preso en ella.

And I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.

Regarde ceci que j’ai trouvé, dit le prédicateur, †en examinant les choses une à une pour en trouver la raison,

He aquí, esto he hallado, dice el Predicador, pesando las cosas una por una para hallar la razón;

Behold, this have I found, saith the preacher, counting one by one, to find out the account:

“Behold, I have found this,” says the Preacher, “to one another, to find an explanation

ce que mon âme cherche encore et que je n’ai pas trouvé : j’ai trouvé un homme entre mille, mais une femme entre elles toutes, je ne l’ai pas trouvée.

Lo que aun busca mi alma, y no encuentro: un hombre entre mil he hallado; mas mujer de todas éstas nunca hallé.

Which yet my soul seeketh, but I find not: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.

which my soul still seeks, but I have not found. I have found one man among a thousand, but I have not found a woman among all those.

Seulement, voici, j’ai trouvé que Dieu a fait l’homme droit ; mais eux, ils ont cherché beaucoup de raisonnements.

He aquí, solamente he hallado esto: que Dios hizo al hombre recto, mas ellos buscaron muchas cuentas.

Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.

Behold, I have only found this: that God made mankind upright; but they search for many inventions.”
