PERCIOCCHÈ io mi ho recate tutte queste cose al cuore, eziandio per chiarir tutto questo: come i giusti e i savi, e i fatti loro, essendo nella man di Dio, gli uomini non conoscono nè l'amore, nè l'odio: tutto è davanti a loro.

CIERTAMENTE dado he mi corazón á todas estas cosas, para declarar todo esto: que los justos y los sabios, y sus obras, están en la mano de Dios; y que no sabe el hombre ni el amor ni el odio por todo lo que pasa delante de él.

For all this I considered in my heart even to declare all this, that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God: no man knoweth either love or hatred by all that is before them.

Tutte le cose avvengono simigliantemente a tutti; un medesimo avvenimento avviene al giusto, ed all'empio; al buono e puro, ed all'immondo; a chi sacrifica, ed a chi non sacrifica; quale è il buono, tale è il peccatore; tal chi giura, qual chi teme di giurare.

Todo acontece de la misma manera á todos: un mismo suceso ocurre al justo y al impío; al bueno y al limpio y al no limpio; al que sacrifica, y al que no sacrifica: como el bueno, así el que peca; el que jura, como el que teme el juramento.

All things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean, and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth, and to him that sacrificeth not: as is the good, so is the sinner; and he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath.

Quest'è una cosa molesta, fra tutte quelle che si fanno sotto il sole, che un medesimo avvenimento avviene a tutti; ed anche, che mentre i figliuoli degli uomini sono in vita, il cuor loro è pien di male, ed hanno delle follie al cuore; e dopo ciò, vanno a' morti.

Este mal hay entre todo lo que se hace debajo del sol, que todos tengan un mismo suceso, y también que el corazón de los hijos de los hombres esté lleno de mal, y de enloquecimiento en su corazón durante su vida: y después, á los muertos.

Perciocchè, chi è che faccia eccezione? Vi è qualche speranza per tutti quelli che sono in vita; conciossiachè la condizione d'un can vivo sia migliore che quella d'un leone morto.

Aun hay esperanza para todo aquél que está entre los vivos; porque mejor es perro vivo que león muerto.

Perciocchè i viventi sanno che morranno; ma i morti non sanno nulla, e non vi è più alcun premio per loro; perciocchè la lor memoria è dimenticata.

Già e il loro amore, e il loro odio, e la loro invidia è perita; e non hanno giammai più parte alcuna in tutto quello che si fa sotto il sole.

También su amor, y su odio y su envidia, feneció ya: ni tiene ya más parte en el siglo, en todo lo que se hace debajo del sol.

Sieno in ogni tempo i tuoi vestimenti bianchi; e l'olio odorifero non venga meno in sul tuo capo.

Fa' a tuo potere tutto quello che avrai modo di fare; perciocchè sotterra, ove tu vai, non vi è nè opera, nè ragione, nè conoscimento, nè sapienza alcuna.

DI nuovo, io ho veduto sotto il sole, che il correre non è in poter de' leggieri, nè il far la guerra in poter de' prodi, nè l'aver del pane in poter de' savi, nè l'acquistar ricchezze in poter de' prudenti, nè d'essere in grazia in poter degl'intendenti; conciossiachè ad essi tutti avvengano tempi e casi.

For man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare; so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them.

Pure ancora ho veduta questa sapienza sotto il sole, che mi è paruta grande:

vi era una piccola città con pochi uomini dentro; ed un gran re venne contro ad essa, e l'intorniò, e fece di gran bastie contro ad essa;

e in essa si trovò un povero uomo savio, il qual liberò la città con la sua sapienza, benchè niuno si ricordasse di quel povero uomo.

Allora io dissi: Meglio val sapienza che forza; benchè la sapienza del povero sia sprezzata, e che le sue parole non sieno ascoltate.

Le parole de' savi devono esser più quietamente ascoltate, che la grida d'un signore fra gli stolti.

Las palabras del sabio con reposo son oídas, más que el clamor del señor entre los necios.

The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools.

La sapienza val meglio che gli strumenti bellici; ma un sol peccatore fa perire un gran bene.

Mejor es la sabiduría que las armas de guerra; mas un pecador destruye mucho bien.

Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroyeth much good.
