La seconde année du règne du grand roi Artaxerxès, le premier de Nisan, le Juif Mardochée, fils de Jaïr, fils de Sémeï, fils de Cisée, de la tribu de Benjamin, Demeurant en la ville de Suse, homme considérable, servant dans le palais du roi, eut en songe une vision. Il était des captifs que Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone, avait emmenés avec Jéchonias, roi de la Judée, Et voici sa vision : Voilà qu'il y avait voix et bruit, tonnerres et tremblements de terre, tumulte sur la terre, Et voilà que deux dragons s'avancèrent, prêts à se combattre mutuellement ; et ils poussaient de grands cris, Et à leurs cris chaque nation se préparait à la guerre, pour combattre la nation des justes. Voilà que c'était un jour d'obscurité et de ténèbres, de tribulation et d'angoisse, d'affliction et de grand tumulte sur la terre, Et toute la nation juste fut troublée, craignant sa propre affliction, et elle se tint prête à mourir, et elle cria au Seigneur Dieu. Et à ses cris, il vint comme un grand fleuve, sortant d'une petite fontaine, Et la lumière et le soleil parurent, et les humbles furent exaltés, et ils dévorèrent les superbes. Et Mardochée, celui qui avait eu cette vision, s'étant éveillé, se demanda en son cœur ce que Dieu voulait faire, et, toute la nuit, il n'eut pas d'autre pensée que de le découvrir. Or, Mardochée se tint tranquille dans le parvis près de Gabatha et de Tharra, deux eunuques du roi qui gardaient le palais, Et il entendit leurs réflexions et il surprit leurs préoccupations, et il apprit qu'ils se préparaient à porter les mains sur le roi Artaxerxès, et il instruisit le roi de ce qui les concernait. Et le roi interrogea les deux eunuques ; et ayant avoué, ils furent menés au supplice, Et le roi fit écrire ces choses en un mémorial, et Mardochée aussi écrivit le récit de ces choses. Et le roi ordonna que Mardochée servît dans l'intérieur du palais, et il lui fit, à ce sujet, des présents. Or, Aman, fils d'Amadathe le Bugéen, était en faveur auprès du roi, et il chercha à nuire à Mardochée et à son peuple à cause des deux eunuques du roi. Or, après ces choses, il advint durant les jours d'Artaxerxès, qui régnait depuis l'Inde sur cent vingt-sept contrées,

Et Muchée dit au roi et aux princes : Vasthi, la reine, n'a pas nui au roi seul, mais aussi à tous les princes et aux grands officiers du roi.

Les autres femmes des Perses et des Mèdes du premier rang, apprenant ce qu'elle a dit au roi, oseront à l'avenir ne point honorer leurs époux.
Y entonces dirán esto las señoras de Persia y de Media que oyeren el hecho de la reina, á todos los príncipes del rey: y habrá mucho menosprecio y enojo.

Si donc le roi le juge à propos, qu'il rende un édit, qu'il l'écrive selon la loi des Perses et des Mèdes, que l'on ne puisse y déroger ; qu'il défende à la reine de s'approcher désormais de sa personne, et que le roi donne le diadème royal à une femme meilleure qu'elle ;
