Ester 9

En efecto, a los trece días del mes duodécimo, que como hemos dicho arriba, se llamaba Adar, cuando estaba dispuesta la mortandad de todos los judíos, y sus enemigos ardían en sed de su sangre, trocada la suerte, comenzaron los judíos a prevalecer, y a tomar venganza de sus contrarios.

Y EN el mes duodécimo, que es el mes de Adar, á trece del mismo, en el que tocaba se ejecutase el mandamiento del rey y su ley, el mismo día en que esperaban los enemigos de los Judíos enseñorearse de ellos, fué lo contrario; porque los Judíos se enseñorearon de los que los aborrecían.

Se juntaron, pues, en todas las ciudades, villas y lugares para acometer a sus enemigos y perseguidores; y nadie osó resistirles; porque estaban todos los pueblos poseídos del miedo de su poder y valimiento.

Los Judíos se juntaron en sus ciudades en todas las provincias del rey Assuero, para meter mano sobre los que habían procurado su mal: y nadie se puso delante de ellos, porque el temor de ellos había caído sobre todos los pueblos.

And all the rulers of the provinces, and the lieutenants, and the deputies, and officers of the king, helped the Jews; because the fear of Mordecai fell upon them.

que sabían ser el valido de la corte, y gozar de extraordinaria privanza; por lo que la fama de su nombre iba creciendo cada día, y andaba volando de boca en boca por todas partes.

Con esto los judíos hicieron un gran estrago y mortandad en sus enemigos; ejecutando aquello mismo que tenían éstos tramado contra el pueblo judaico.

E hirieron los Judíos á todos sus enemigos con plaga de espada, y de mortandad, y de perdición; é hicieron en sus enemigos á su voluntad.

Después de haberles quitado la vida, no quisieron saquear ni tocar nada de sus bienes.

Diez hijos de Amán hijo de Amadatha, enemigo de los Judíos: mas en la presa no metieron su mano.

Inmediatamente dieron cuenta al rey del número de los que habían sido muertos en Susán.

El cual dijo a la reina: En la ciudad de Susán los judíos han muerto a quinientos hombres, además de los diez hijos de Amán; ¿cuán grande, pues, juzgas que será la mortandad que habrán hecho en todas las provincias? ¿Qué más pides, o qué otra cosa quieres que yo mande?

Y dijo el rey á la reina Esther: En Susán, capital del reino, han muerto los Judíos y destruído á quinientos hombres, y á diez hijos de Amán; ¿qué habrán hecho en las otras provincias del rey? ¿Cuál pues es tu petición, y te será concedida? ¿ó qué más es tu demanda, y será hecho?

And the king said unto Esther the queen, The Jews have slain and destroyed five hundred men in Shushan the palace, and the ten sons of Haman; what have they done in the rest of the king’s provinces? now what is thy petition? and it shall be granted thee: or what is thy request further? and it shall be done.

The king said to Esther the queen, “The Jews have slain and destroyed five hundred men in the citadel of Susa, including the ten sons of Haman; what then have they done in the rest of the king’s provinces! Now what is your petition? It shall be granted you. What is your further request? It shall be done.”

Si es del agrado del rey, respondió ella, dése facultad a los judíos para que hagan también mañana lo que han hecho hoy en Susán; y que los cadáveres de los diez hijos de Amán sean colgados en patíbulos.

Y respondió Esther: Si place al rey, concédase también mañana á los Judíos en Susán, que hagan conforme á la ley de hoy; y que cuelguen en la horca á los diez hijos de Amán.

Then said Esther, If it please the king, let it be granted to the Jews which are in Shushan to do to morrow also according unto this day’s decree, and let Haman’s ten sons be hanged upon the gallows.

Then Esther said, “If it pleases the king, let it be granted to the Jews who are in Susa to do tomorrow also according to today’s decree, and let Haman’s ten sons be hanged on the gallows.”

Y mandó el rey que así se hiciese; e inmediatamente se fijó en Susán el edicto, y fueron colgados los diez hijos de Amán.

Reunidos los judíos el día catorce del mes de Adar, mataron en Susán hasta trescientos hombres; mas tampoco saquearon sus bienes.

Y los Judíos que estaban en Susán, se juntaron también el catorce del mes de Adar, y mataron en Susán trescientos hombres: mas en la presa no metieron su mano.

Asimismo en todas las provincias sujetas al dominio del rey, los judíos pelearon por defender sus vidas, matando a sus enemigos y perseguidores, en tanto número que llegó a setenta y cinco mil el de los muertos, sin que nadie tocase cosa alguna de sus bienes.

En cuanto á los otros Judíos que estaban en las provincias del rey, también se juntaron y pusiéronse en defensa de su vida, y tuvieron reposo de sus enemigos, y mataron de sus contrarios setenta y cinco mil; mas en la presa no metieron su mano.

El día trece del mes de Adar fue el primero de la mortandad en todas partes, y el día catorce cesó el estrago; este día determinaron que fuese día de fiesta solemne, y se celebrase de allí en adelante perpetuamente con banquetes, regocijos y convites.

En el día trece del mes de Adar fué esto; y reposaron en el día catorce del mismo, é hiciéronlo día de banquete y de alegría.

On the thirteenth day of the month Adar; and on the fourteenth day of the same rested they, and made it a day of feasting and gladness.

Los que ejecutaron la mortandad en la ciudad de Susán emplearon en ella los días trece y catorce de dicho mes, y cesaron de matar el quince; y por eso establecieron que este día se solemnizase con banquetes y regocijos.

Mas los Judíos que estaban en Susán se juntaron en el trece y en el catorce del mismo mes; y al quince del mismo reposaron, é hicieron aquel día día de banquete y de regocijo.

Mas los judíos que moraban en villas sin muros y en aldeas, señalaron el día catorce del mes de Adar para los convites y alegrías; de modo que hacen en él gran fiesta, y se regalan recíprocamente platos de viandas y manjares.

Por tanto los Judíos aldeanos que habitan en las villas sin muro, hacen á los catorce del mes de Adar el día de alegría y de banquete, y buen día, y de enviar porciones cada uno á su vecino.

Therefore the Jews of the villages, that dwelt in the unwalled towns, made the fourteenth day of the month Adar a day of gladness and feasting, and a good day, and of sending portions one to another.

Cuidó, pues, Mardoqueo de escribir todas esas cosas en una carta o libro, que envió a los judíos que habitaban en todas las provincias del rey, así vecinas como remotas,

para que observasen como días festivos el catorce y el quince del mes de Adar, y los celebrasen siempre cada año con solemne honor;

To stablish this among them, that they should keep the fourteenth day of the month Adar, and the fifteenth day of the same, yearly,

por cuanto en tales días los judíos tomaron venganza de sus enemigos, y el llanto y tristeza se les convirtieron en júbilo y alegría; y así estos días eran días de banquetes y regocijos, en que debían enviarse mutuamente parte de los manjares, y regalar algo a los pobres.

Como días en que los Judíos tuvieron reposo de sus enemigos, y el mes que se les tornó de tristeza en alegría, y de luto en día bueno; que los hiciesen días de banquete y de gozo, y de enviar porciones cada uno á su vecino, y dádivas á los pobres.

As the days wherein the Jews rested from their enemies, and the month which was turned unto them from sorrow to joy, and from mourning into a good day: that they should make them days of feasting and joy, and of sending portions one to another, and gifts to the poor.

Establecieron, pues, los judíos una fiesta solemne, conforme a lo que habían comenzado a practicar en este tiempo, y les había prescrito Mardoqueo en su carta;

And the Jews undertook to do as they had begun, and as Mordecai had written unto them;

en memoria de que Amán, hijo de Amadati, del linaje de Agag, enemigo y perseguidor de los judíos, maquinó contra ellos el atentado de matarlos y exterminarlos; echó para eso el Fur, que es lo mismo que suerte en nuestra lengua.

Porque Amán hijo de Amadatha, Agageo, enemigo de todos los Judíos, había ideado contra los Judíos para destruirlos, y echó Pur, que quiere decir suerte, para consumirlos y acabar con ellos.

Mas después Ester se presentó al rey, suplicando que desbaratase los designios de Amán, mediante una carta y orden del rey, y que el mal que había tramado contra los judíos recayese sobre su cabeza. Y al fin así a Amán como a sus hijos los pusieron en una cruz.

Mas como Esther vino á la presencia del rey, él intimó por carta: El perverso designio que aquél trazó contra los Judíos, recaiga sobre su cabeza; y cuélguenlo á él y á sus hijos en la horca.

Desde entonces se llaman estos días Furim, este es, de las Suertes; por cuanto el Fur, esto es, la suerte, fue echada en la urna. Todos estos sucesos se contienen en el volumen de aquel escrito, es a saber, de este libro.

Por esto llamaron á estos días Purim, del nombre Pur. Por todas las palabras pues de esta carta, y por lo que ellos vieron sobre esto, y lo que llegó á su noticia,

Y en memoria de lo que padecieron, y de la feliz mudanza que sobrevino se obligaron los judíos por sí y por sus descendientes, y por todos los que quisieren agregarse a su religión, a no permitir que ninguno pase estos dos días sin solemnizarlos, según aparece de este escrito, y lo pide el tiempo señalado de año en año.

Establecieron y tomaron los Judíos sobre sí, y sobre su simiente, y sobre todos los allegados á ellos, y no será traspasado, el celebrar estos dos días según está escrito en orden á ellos, y conforme á su tiempo cada un año;

Estos son días que jamás serán puestos en olvido, y que se celebrarán de generación en generación en todas las provincias de la tierra; y no hay ciudad alguna en que los días de Furim, esto es, de las Suertes, no sean guardados por los judíos y por la descendencia de los que se obligaron a estas ceremonias.

Y que estos dos días serían en memoria, y celebrados en todas las naciones, y familias, y provincias, y ciudades. Estos días de Purim no pasarán de entre los Judíos, y la memoria de ellos no cesará de su simiente.

And that these days should be remembered and kept throughout every generation, every family, every province, and every city; and that these days of Purim should not fail from among the Jews, nor the memorial of them perish from their seed.

observando los días de las Suertes, y celebrándolos a su tiempo con demostraciones de gozo. Se obligaron, pues, los judíos, conforme a lo prescrito por Mardoqueo y Ester, a observar ellos y sus descendientes los ayunos y clamores a Dios y demás ceremonias de los días de las Suertes,

Para confirmar estos días de Purim en sus tiempos señalados, según les había constituído Mardochêo Judío y la reina Esther, y como habían ellos tomado sobre sí y sobre su simiente, para conmemorar el fin de los ayunos y de su clamor.
