1Quando, pois, os adversários de Judá e de Benjamim, ouviram que os que tinham vindo do cativeiro estavam edificando o templo ao SENHOR, Deus de Israel,
2chegaram-se a Zorobabel, e aos chefes das famílias, e lhes disseram: Deixai-nos edificar convosco, porque assim como vós, buscaremos ao vosso Deus, como também já sacrificamos a ele desde os dias de Esar-Hadom, rei da Assíria, que nos fez subir até aqui.
3Porém Zorobabel, Jesua, e os demais chefes das famílias de Israel lhes disseram: Não nos convém edificar convosco casa a nosso Deus; mas somente nós a edificaremos ao SENHOR, Deus de Israel, como nos mandou o rei Ciro, rei da Pérsia.
4Todavia o povo da terra desencorajava o povo de Judá, e os perturbava, para que não edificassem.
5E subornaram contra eles conselheiros para frustrarem sua intenção, todos os dias de Ciro rei da Pérsia, e até o reinado de Dario, rei da Pérsia.
6E sob o reinado de Assuero, no princípio de seu reinado, escreveram uma acusação contra os moradores de Judá e de Jerusalém.
7E nos dias de Artaxerxes, Bislão, Mitridate, Tabeel, e os demais seus companheiros, escreveram a Artaxerxes rei da Pérsia; e o escrito da carta estava feito em siríaco, e composto em siríaco.
8Reum o comandante, e Sinsai o escrivão, escreveram uma carta contra Jerusalém ao rei Artaxerxes, conforme o seguinte:
9Reum, o comandante, e Sinsai secretário, e os demais seus companheiros, os dinaítas, os arfasaquitas, tarpelitas, arfasitas, os arquevitas, os babilônios, susanquitas, deavitas, e elamitas;
10E os demais povos que o grande e famoso Asnapar transportou, e fez habitar nas cidades de Samaria, e os demais da região dalém do rio.
11Este é o teor da carta que enviaram: Ao rei Artaxerxes. De teus servos dalém do rio.
12Seja conhecido do rei que os judeus que subiram de ti a nós, vieram a Jerusalém; e edificam aquela cidade rebelde e má, e estão restaurando seus muros; e reparado seus fundamentos.
13Seja agora conhecido do rei, que se aquela cidade for reconstruída, e os muros forem restaurados, os tributos, taxas, e impostos não serão pagos, e o patrimônio real será prejudicado.
14Visto que somos assalariados pelo palácio, não nos convém ver a desonra do rei; por isso mandamos informar ao rei;
15Para que se busque no livro das crônicas de teus pais; e acharás no livro das crônicas, e saberás que aquela cidade foi uma cidade rebelde, prejudicial aos reis e às províncias, e que nela desde antigamente fizeram rebeliões; por isso aquela cidade foi arruinada.
16Por isso informamos ao rei que, se aquela cidade for reconstruída, e seus muros restaurados, a parte além do rio não será tua.
17Então o rei enviou esta resposta a Reum, o comandante, e a Sinsai, o escrivão, e aos demais de seus companheiros que habitam em Samaria, como também aos demais da parte além do rio: Paz.
18A carta que nos enviastes foi lida claramente diante de mim.
19E eu dei ordem para que se buscasse; e encontraram que aquela cidade na antiguidade se levantou contra os reis, e nela houve rebelião e insurreição.
20E que houve reis poderosos em Jerusalém, dominaram toda a região além do rio; e a eles se pagava tributos, taxas e impostos.
21Agora, pois, dai ordem que impeçam aqueles homens, e aquela cidade não seja reconstruída, até que seja dado mandamento de minha parte.
22E sede cuidadosos para que não falheis nisto; por que haveria de aumentar o dano para o prejuízo real?
23Assim que o teor da carta do rei Artaxerxes foi lido diante de Reum, e de Sinsai o escrivão, e seus companheiros, eles foram apressadamente a Jerusalém aos judeus, e os impediram com força e violência.
24Cessou, então, a obra da casa de Deus, a qual estava em Jerusalém; e cessou até o segundo ano do reinado de Dario, rei da Pérsia.

1Y OYENDO los enemigos de Judá y de Benjamín, que los venidos de la cautividad edificaban el templo de Jehová Dios de Israel,
2Llegáronse á Zorobabel, y á los cabezas de los padres, y dijéronles: Edificaremos con vosotros, porque como vosotros buscaremos á vuestro Dios, y á él sacrificamos desde los días de Esar-haddón rey de Asiria, que nos hizo subir aquí.
3Y díjoles Zorobabel, y Jesuá, y los demás cabezas de los padres de Israel: No nos conviene edificar con vosotros casa á nuestro Dios, sino que nosotros solos la edificaremos á Jehová Dios de Israel, como nos mandó el rey Ciro, rey de Persia.
4Mas el pueblo de la tierra debilitaba las manos del pueblo de Judá, y los arredraban de edificar.
5Cohecharon además contra ellos consejeros para disipar su consejo, todo el tiempo de Ciro rey de Persia, y hasta el reinado de Darío rey de Persia.
6Y en el reinado de Assuero, en el principio de su reinado, escribieron acusaciones contra los moradores de Judá y de Jerusalem.
7Y en días de Artajerjes, Bislam, Mitrídates, Tabeel, y los demás sus compañeros, escribieron á Artajerjes rey de Persia; y la escritura de la carta estaba hecha en siriaco, y declarada en siriaco.
8Rehum canciller, y Simsai secretario, escribieron una carta contra Jerusalem al rey Artajerjes, como se sigue.
9Entonces Rehum canciller, y Simsai secretario, y los demás sus compañeros, los Dineos, y los Apharsathachêos, Thepharleos, Apharseos, los Erchûeos, los Babilonios, Susanchêos, Dieveos, y Elamitas;
10Y los demás pueblos que el grande y glorioso Asnappar trasportó, é hizo habitar en las ciudades de Samaria, y los demás de la otra parte del río, etcétera, escribieron.
11Este es el traslado de la carta que enviaron: Al rey Artajerjes: Tus siervos de la otra parte del río, etcétera.
12Sea notorio al rey, que los Judíos que subieron de ti á nosotros, vinieron á Jerusalem; y edifican la ciudad rebelde y mala, y han erigido los muros; y compuesto los fundamentos.
13Ahora, notorio sea al rey, que si aquella ciudad fuere reedificada, y los muros fueren establecidos, el tributo, pecho, y rentas no darán, y el catastro de lo reyes será menoscabado.
14Ya pues que estamos mantenidos de palacio, no nos es justo ver el menosprecio del rey: hemos enviado por tanto, y hécholo saber al rey,
15Para que busque en el libro de las historias de nuestros padres; y hallarás en el libro de las historias, y sabrás que esta ciudad es ciudad rebelde, y perjudicial á los reyes y á las provincias, y que de tiempo antiguo forman en medio de ella rebeliones; por lo que esta ciudad fué destruída.
16Hacemos saber al rey, que si esta ciudad fuere edificada, y erigidos sus muros, la parte allá del río no será tuya.
17El rey envió esta respuesta á Rehum canciller, y á Simsai secretario, y á los demás sus compañeros que habitan en Samaria, y á los demás de la parte allá del río: Paz, etc.
18La carta que nos enviasteis claramente fué leída delante de mí.
19Y por mí fué dado mandamiento, y buscaron, y hallaron que aquella ciudad de tiempo antiguo se levanta contra los reyes, y se rebela, y se forma en ella sedición:
20Y que reyes fuertes hubo en Jerusalem, quienes señorearon en todo lo que está á la parte allá del río; y que tributo, y pecho, y rentas se les daba.
21Ahora pues dad orden que cesen aquellos hombres, y no sea esa ciudad edificada, hasta que por mí sea dado mandamiento.
22Y mirad bien que no hagáis error en esto: ¿por qué habrá de crecer el daño para perjuicio de los reyes?
23Entonces, cuando el traslado de la carta del rey Artajerjes fué leído delante de Rehum, y de Simsai secretario, y sus compañeros, fueron prestamente á Jerusalem á los Judíos, é hiciéronles cesar con poder y fuerza.
24Cesó entonces la obra de la casa de Dios, la cual estaba en Jerusalem: y cesó hasta el año segundo del reinado de Darío rey de Persia.

1Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the LORD God of Israel;
2Then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esar-haddon king of Assur, which brought us up hither.
3But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto the LORD God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.
4Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,
5And hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.
6And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, wrote they unto him an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.
7And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their companions, unto Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the Syrian tongue, and interpreted in the Syrian tongue.
8Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king in this sort:
9Then wrote Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions; the Dinaites, the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Susanchites, the Dehavites, and the Elamites,
10And the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Asnappar brought over, and set in the cities of Samaria, and the rest that are on this side the river, and at such a time.
11This is the copy of the letter that they sent unto him, even unto Artaxerxes the king; Thy servants the men on this side the river, and at such a time.
12Be it known unto the king, that the Jews which came up from thee to us are come unto Jerusalem, building the rebellious and the bad city, and have set up the walls thereof, and joined the foundations.
13Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city be builded, and the walls set up again, then will they not pay toll, tribute, and custom, and so thou shalt endamage the revenue of the kings.
14Now because we have maintenance from the king’s palace, and it was not meet for us to see the king’s dishonour, therefore have we sent and certified the king;
15That search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time: for which cause was this city destroyed.
16We certify the king that, if this city be builded again, and the walls thereof set up, by this means thou shalt have no portion on this side the river.
17Then sent the king an answer unto Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and unto the rest beyond the river, Peace, and at such a time.
18The letter which ye sent unto us hath been plainly read before me.
19And I commanded, and search hath been made, and it is found that this city of old time hath made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made therein.
20There have been mighty kings also over Jerusalem, which have ruled over all countries beyond the river; and toll, tribute, and custom, was paid unto them.
21Give ye now commandment to cause these men to cease, and that this city be not builded, until another commandment shall be given from me.
22Take heed now that ye fail not to do this: why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?
23Now when the copy of king Artaxerxes’ letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.
24Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.

3But Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the rest of the heads of fathers’ households of Israel said to them, “You have nothing to do with us in building a house to our God; but we ourselves together will build to the LORD, the God of Israel, as King Cyrus the king of Persia has commanded us.”

12Be it known to the king that the Jews who came up from you have come to us to Jerusalem. They are building the rebellious and bad city, and have finished the walls and repaired the foundations.
13Be it known now to the king that if this city is built and the walls finished, they will not pay tribute, custom, or toll, and in the end it will be hurtful to the kings.
14Now because we eat the salt of the palace and it is not appropriate for us to see the king’s dishonor, therefore we have sent and informed the king,
15that search may be made in the book of the records of your fathers. You will see in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful to kings and provinces, and that they have started rebellions within it in the past. That is why this city was destroyed.
16We inform the king that if this city is built and the walls finished, then you will have no possession beyond the River.
17Then the king sent an answer to Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions who live in Samaria, and in the rest of the country beyond the River: Peace.
18The letter which you sent to us has been plainly read before me.
19I decreed, and search has been made, and it was found that this city has made insurrection against kings in the past, and that rebellion and revolts have been made in it.
20There have also been mighty kings over Jerusalem who have ruled over all the country beyond the River; and tribute, custom, and toll was paid to them.
21Make a decree now to cause these men to cease, and that this city not be built until a decree is made by me.
22Be careful that you not be slack doing so. Why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?
23Then when the copy of King Artaxerxes’ letter was read before Rehum, Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went in haste to Jerusalem to the Jews, and made them to cease by force of arms.
24Then work stopped on God’s house which is at Jerusalem. It stopped until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
