Quando os inimigos de Judá e Benjamim ouviram dizer que os exilados haviam voltado e estavam reconstruindo o templo do Senhor, o Deus de Israel,

Y OYENDO los enemigos de Judá y de Benjamín, que los venidos de la cautividad edificaban el templo de Jehová Dios de Israel,

Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the LORD God of Israel;

eles se aproximaram de Zorobabel e dos outros chefes de famílias e sugeriram: “Deixem-nos trabalhar com vocês, pois estamos tão interessados em seu Deus como vocês; temos oferecido sacrifícios a ele desde que Esar-Hadom, rei da Assíria, nos trouxe para cá”.

Llegáronse á Zorobabel, y á los cabezas de los padres, y dijéronles: Edificaremos con vosotros, porque como vosotros buscaremos á vuestro Dios, y á él sacrificamos desde los días de Esar-haddón rey de Asiria, que nos hizo subir aquí.

Then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esar-haddon king of Assur, which brought us up hither.

they came near to Zerubbabel, and to the heads of fathers’ households, and said to them, “Let us build with you, for we seek your God as you do; and we have been sacrificing to him since the days of Esar Haddon king of Assyria, who brought us up here.”

Mas Zorobabel, Jesua e os outros chefes das famílias de Israel responderam: “Não, vocês não podem ter parte na reconstrução do templo de nosso Deus. Nós é que devemos construir o templo do Senhor, o Deus de Israel, exatamente como Ciro, o rei da Pérsia, ordenou”.

Y díjoles Zorobabel, y Jesuá, y los demás cabezas de los padres de Israel: No nos conviene edificar con vosotros casa á nuestro Dios, sino que nosotros solos la edificaremos á Jehová Dios de Israel, como nos mandó el rey Ciro, rey de Persia.

But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto the LORD God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.

But Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the rest of the heads of fathers’ households of Israel said to them, “You have nothing to do with us in building a house to our God; but we ourselves together will build to the LORD, the God of Israel, as King Cyrus the king of Persia has commanded us.”

Então os residentes locais tentaram desanimar e amedrontar o povo de Judá para que não continuasse a construção.

e os homens de diversas outras nações, que o grande e renomado Asnapar havia tirado das próprias terras e havia colocado em Samaria e nas terras vizinhas que ficavam a oeste do rio Eufrates — escreveram o seguinte:

“É bom ficar informado que os judeus enviados da Babilônia para Jerusalém estão reconstruindo esta cidade historicamente rebelde e má; eles estão reconstruindo os muros e consertando os alicerces do templo.

Sea notorio al rey, que los Judíos que subieron de ti á nosotros, vinieron á Jerusalem; y edifican la ciudad rebelde y mala, y han erigido los muros; y compuesto los fundamentos.

Be it known unto the king, that the Jews which came up from thee to us are come unto Jerusalem, building the rebellious and the bad city, and have set up the walls thereof, and joined the foundations.

Be it known to the king that the Jews who came up from you have come to us to Jerusalem. They are building the rebellious and bad city, and have finished the walls and repaired the foundations.

“Além disso, desejamos que o rei saiba que, se esta cidade for reconstruída e seus muros reparados, será um grande prejuízo para o rei, pois os judeus vão deixar de pagar os impostos, tributos e taxas devidos ao rei.

Ahora, notorio sea al rey, que si aquella ciudad fuere reedificada, y los muros fueren establecidos, el tributo, pecho, y rentas no darán, y el catastro de lo reyes será menoscabado.

Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city be builded, and the walls set up again, then will they not pay toll, tribute, and custom, and so thou shalt endamage the revenue of the kings.

Be it known now to the king that if this city is built and the walls finished, they will not pay tribute, custom, or toll, and in the end it will be hurtful to the kings.

Visto como somos agradecidos ao rei como nosso protetor, e não desejamos vê-lo sendo desonrado desta maneira, resolvemos enviar esta informação ao rei.

Ya pues que estamos mantenidos de palacio, no nos es justo ver el menosprecio del rey: hemos enviado por tanto, y hécholo saber al rey,

Now because we have maintenance from the king’s palace, and it was not meet for us to see the king’s dishonour, therefore have we sent and certified the king;

Sugerimos que o rei faça uma busca nos antigos registros e descubra como esta cidade foi rebelde e problemática em tempos passados; ela foi destruída por causa de sua longa história de revolta contra os reis e países que tentaram dominá-la.

Para que busque en el libro de las historias de nuestros padres; y hallarás en el libro de las historias, y sabrás que esta ciudad es ciudad rebelde, y perjudicial á los reyes y á las provincias, y que de tiempo antiguo forman en medio de ella rebeliones; por lo que esta ciudad fué destruída.

That search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time: for which cause was this city destroyed.

Queremos declarar que se esta cidade for reconstruída e os muros forem terminados, o rei pode esquecer desta parte de seu império além do Eufrates, pois pode considerá-la perdida”.

Hacemos saber al rey, que si esta ciudad fuere edificada, y erigidos sus muros, la parte allá del río no será tuya.

We certify the king that, if this city be builded again, and the walls thereof set up, by this means thou shalt have no portion on this side the river.

We inform the king that if this city is built and the walls finished, then you will have no possession beyond the River.

Então o rei deu esta resposta ao governador Reum, ao escrivão Sinsai e aos seus companheiros que moram em Samaria e em toda a região a oeste do rio Eufrates: “Saudações!

El rey envió esta respuesta á Rehum canciller, y á Simsai secretario, y á los demás sus compañeros que habitan en Samaria, y á los demás de la parte allá del río: Paz, etc.

Then sent the king an answer unto Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and unto the rest beyond the river, Peace, and at such a time.

“A carta que os senhores me enviaram foi claramente lida na minha presença.

The letter which ye sent unto us hath been plainly read before me.

Ordenei que se fizesse uma busca nos registros e, na verdade, descobri que em tempos passados Jerusalém foi um foco de revolta contra muitos reis e que tem sido um lugar de rebelião e motins!

Y por mí fué dado mandamiento, y buscaron, y hallaron que aquella ciudad de tiempo antiguo se levanta contra los reyes, y se rebela, y se forma en ella sedición:

And I commanded, and search hath been made, and it is found that this city of old time hath made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made therein.

Verifico, além disso, que houve alguns reis muito poderosos em Jerusalém que governaram toda a terra além do rio Eufrates e receberam enormes quantias de impostos, tributos e taxas.

Y que reyes fuertes hubo en Jerusalem, quienes señorearon en todo lo que está á la parte allá del río; y que tributo, y pecho, y rentas se les daba.

Portanto, ordeno que esses homens parem a construção do templo, e que essa cidade não seja reconstruída enquanto eu não mandar.

Ahora pues dad orden que cesen aquellos hombres, y no sea esa ciudad edificada, hasta que por mí sea dado mandamiento.

Give ye now commandment to cause these men to cease, and that this city be not builded, until another commandment shall be given from me.

Não se demorem, porque não devemos permitir que essa situação escape do nosso controle, e os interesses reais sejam prejudicados!”

Y mirad bien que no hagáis error en esto: ¿por qué habrá de crecer el daño para perjuicio de los reyes?

Take heed now that ye fail not to do this: why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?

Quando esta carta do rei Artaxerxes foi lida perante Reum e Sinsai, e os seus companheiros, eles foram depressa a Jerusalém e obrigaram os judeus a parar a construção.

Entonces, cuando el traslado de la carta del rey Artajerjes fué leído delante de Rehum, y de Simsai secretario, y sus compañeros, fueron prestamente á Jerusalem á los Judíos, é hiciéronles cesar con poder y fuerza.

Now when the copy of king Artaxerxes’ letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.

Assim a obra do templo de Deus em Jerusalém ficou parada até o segundo ano do reinado de Dario, rei da Pérsia.

Cesó entonces la obra de la casa de Dios, la cual estaba en Jerusalem: y cesó hasta el año segundo del reinado de Darío rey de Persia.

Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.

Then work stopped on God’s house which is at Jerusalem. It stopped until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
