1Ahora bien, la fe es la sustancia de lo que se espera, y la evidencia de que las cosas que no se ven son verdad.
2Porque por eso nuestros antepasados tuvieron la aprobación de Dios.
3Por la fe, nosotros entendemos que el orden de los mundos los formó mediante la palabra de Dios, de modo que lo que se ve, se ha hecho de las cosas que no se ven.
4Por la fe Abel hizo una mejor ofrenda a Dios que Caín, y atestigua por medio de ella su justicia, dando Dios su aprobación de su ofrenda; y su voz aún nos llega a través de ella aunque él esté muerto.
5Por la fe, Enoc fue llevado al cielo para que no viera la muerte; no se le vio más, porque Dios se lo llevó; porque antes de ser tomado, se le había dado testimonio de que agradaba mucho a Dios:
6Y sin fe no es posible agradar a Dios, porque es Es necesario para cualquiera que acuda a Dios tener la creencia de que Dios es, y que él es galardonador de todos aquellos que lo buscan con diligencia.
7Por la fe, Noé, movido por el temor de Dios, preparó un arca para la salvación de su familia, porque Dios le había dado noticias de cosas que no se habían visto en ese momento; y por medio de él el mundo fue juzgado por él, y obtuvo para su herencia la justicia que es por fe.
8Por la fe Abraham hizo como Dios dijo cuando se le ordenó salir a un lugar que se le iba a dar como herencia, y salió sin saber a dónde iba.
9Por la fe él era un vagabundo en la tierra de la promesa, como en una tierra extraña, viviendo en tiendas con Isaac y Jacob, quienes tenían una parte con él en la misma herencia:
10Porque él estaba buscando la ciudad con fundamentos firmes, cuyo constructor y creador es Dios.
11Y por la fe, la misma Sara tuvo poder para concebir, y dio a luz aún cuando era muy vieja, porque tuvo fe en aquel que dio su palabra;
12De modo que, de un hombre, que estaba cerca de la muerte, llegaron niños en número como las estrellas en el cielo, o como la arena junto al mar que no puede ser contada.
13Todos estos llegaron a su fin en la fe, sin haber tenido la herencia; pero habiendo visto con alegría lejos, dieron testimonio de que eran extranjeros vagabundos sobre la tierra.
14Para aquellos que dicen tales cosas, dejan en claro que están buscando una patria.
15Y realmente, si hubieran tenido en cuenta el país del que salieron, tendrían posibilidades de regresar.
16Pero ahora su deseo es un país mejor, es decir, celestial; y entonces no es ninguna vergüenza que Dios sea llamado su Dios; porque él ha preparado una ciudad para ellos.
17Por la fe, Abraham hizo una ofrenda de Isaac, cuando fue probado; y aquel con quien se había hecho este pacto entregó como ofrenda el único hijo de su cuerpo,
18De quien se había dicho: De Isaac tomará tu simiente su nombre:
19Juzgando que Dios fue capaz de dar vida hasta a los muertos; y debido a esto, lo recuperó como si estuviera muerto.
20Por la fe, Isaac, bendiciendo a Jacob y a Esaú, dio noticias de lo que vendrá.
21Por la fe, Jacob bendijo a cada uno de los hijos de José, cuando estaba cerca de la muerte; y le dio culto a Dios, apoyado por su palo.
22Por la fe José, cuando se acercaba su fin, dijo que los hijos de Israel saldrían de Egipto; y dio órdenes sobre sus huesos.
23Por la fe, Moisés fue guardado en secreto por su padre y su madre durante tres meses después de su nacimiento, porque vieron que era un niño hermoso; y no tenían miedo de las órdenes del rey.
24Por la fe Moisés, cuando llegó a ser hombre, no tuvo deseos de ser nombrado hijo de la hija de Faraón;
25Sintiendo que era mejor experimentar dolor con el pueblo de Dios, que por un corto tiempo probar los placeres del pecado;
26Considerando que una parte en la vergüenza de Cristo es mejor que toda la riqueza de Egipto; porque tenía puesta la mirada en su recompensa última no en la inmediata.
27Por la fe salió de Egipto, no siendo apartado de su propósito por temor a la ira del rey; porque siguió su camino, porque se sostuvo como viendo al Invisible.
28Por la fe celebró la Pascua y puso la señal de la sangre sobre las casas, para que el ángel de la destrucción no matara a sus hijos mayores.
29Por la fe atravesaron el Mar Rojo como si hubiera sido tierra firme, aunque los egipcios fueron vencidos por el agua cuando intentaron hacer lo mismo.
30Por la fe, los muros de Jericó descendieron, después de haber sido rodeados por un círculo durante siete días.
31Por la fe, Rahab, la mujer ramera, no fue ejecutada con los que habían ido en contra de las órdenes de Dios, porque ella había tomado en su casa en paz a los espías.
32¿Qué más puedo decir? Porque no habría tiempo para contar las historias de Gedeón, Barac, Sansón y Jefté, de David, Samuel y los profetas:
33Que por la fe vencieron a los reinos, hicieron justicia, obtuvieron su recompensa, mantuvieron cerradas las bocas de los leones,
34Apagaron fuegos violentos, evitaron el filo de la espada, se fortaleció cuando estaban débiles, se llenó de poder en la guerra y puso en fuga a los ejércitos extranjeros.
35Las mujeres recibieron sus muertos mediante la resurrección; otros fueron torturados, sin ningún deseo de liberarse, para obtener una mejor resurrección;
36Y otros sufrieron burlas y golpes, e incluso con cadenas y cárceles:
37Fueron apedreados, fueron cortados con cuchillos, fueron probados, los mataron con la espada, anduvieron en pieles de oveja y en pieles de cabra; siendo pobres y afligidos y maltratados cruelmente,
38Vagando por lugares deshechos y en montañas y en agujeros en las rocas; para quien el mundo no era lo suficientemente bueno.
39Y ninguno de ellos obtuvo lo prometido del pacto, aunque todos tenían un buen testimonio por medio de la fe,
40Porque Dios había guardado algo mejor para nosotros, para que no fuesen ellos perfeccionados aparte de nosotros.

1ES pues la fe la sustancia de las cosas que se esperan, la demostración de las cosas que no se ven.
2Porque por ella alcanzaron testimonio los antiguos.
3Por la fe entendemos haber sido compuestos los siglos por la palabra de Dios, siendo hecho lo que se ve, de lo que no se veía.
4Por la fe Abel ofreció á Dios mayor sacrificio que Caín, por la cual alcanzó testimonio de que era justo, dando Dios testimonio á sus presentes; y difunto, aun habla por ella.
5Por la fe Enoc fué traspuesto para no ver muerte, y no fué hallado, porque lo traspuso Dios. Y antes que fuese traspuesto, tuvo testimonio de haber agradado á Dios.
6Empero sin fe es imposible agradar á Dios; porque es menester que el que á Dios se allega, crea que le hay, y que es galardonador de los que le buscan.
7Por la fe Noé, habiendo recibido respuesta de cosas que aun no se veían, con temor aparejó el arca en que su casa se salvase: por la cual fe condenó al mundo, y fué hecho heredero de la justicia que es por la fe.
8Por la fe Abraham, siendo llamado, obedeció para salir al lugar que había de recibir por heredad; y salió sin saber dónde iba.
9Por fe habitó en la tierra prometida como en tierra ajena, morando en cabañas con Isaac y Jacob, herederos juntamente de la misma promesa:
10Porque esperaba ciudad con fundamentos, el artífice y hacedor de la cual es Dios.
11Por la fe también la misma Sara, siendo estéril, recibió fuerza para concebir simiente; y parió aun fuera del tiempo de la edad, porque creyó ser fiel el que lo había prometido.
12Por lo cual también, de uno, y ése ya amortecido, salieron como las estrellas del cielo en multitud, y como la arena innumerable que está á la orilla de la mar.
13Conforme á la fe murieron todos éstos sin haber recibido las promesas, sino mirándolas de lejos, y creyéndolas, y saludándolas, y confesando que eran peregrinos y advenedizos sobre la tierra.
14Porque los que esto dicen, claramente dan á entender que buscan una patria.
15Que si se acordaran de aquella de donde salieron, cierto tenían tiempo para volverse:
16Empero deseaban la mejor, es á saber, la celestial; por lo cual Dios no se avergüenza de llamarse Dios de ellos: porque les había aparejado ciudad.
17Por fe ofreció Abraham á Isaac cuando fué probado, y ofrecía al unigénito el que había recibido las promesas,
18Habiéndole sido dicho: En Isaac te será llamada simiente:
19Pensando que aun de los muertos es Dios poderoso para levantar; de donde también le volvió á recibir por figura.
20Por fe bendijo Isaac á Jacob y á Esaú respecto á cosas que habían de ser.
21Por fe Jacob, muriéndose, bendijo á cada uno de los hijos de José, y adoró estribando sobre la punta de su bordón.
22Por fe José, muriéndose, se acordó de la partida de los hijos de Israel; y dió mandamiento acerca de sus huesos.
23Por fe Moisés, nacido, fué escondido de sus padres por tres meses, porque le vieron hermoso niño; y no temieron el mandamiento del rey.
24Por fe Moisés, hecho ya grande, rehusó ser llamado hijo de la hija de Faraón;
25Escogiendo antes ser afligido con el pueblo de Dios, que gozar de comodidades temporales de pecado.
26Teniendo por mayores riquezas el vituperio de Cristo que los tesoros de los Egipcios; porque miraba á la remuneración.
27Por fe dejó á Egipto, no temiendo la ira del rey; porque se sostuvo como viendo al Invisible.
28Por fe celebró la pascua y el derramamiento de la sangre, para que el que mataba los primogénitos no los tocase.
29Por fe pasaron el mar Bermejo como por tierra seca: lo cual probando los Egipcios, fueron sumergidos.
30Por fe cayeron los muros de Jericó con rodearlos siete días.
31Por fe Rahab la ramera no pereció juntamente con los incrédulos, habiendo recibido á los espías con paz.
32¿Y qué más digo? porque el tiempo me faltará contando de Gedeón, de Barac, de Samsón, de Jephté, de David, de Samuel, y de los profetas:
33Que por fe ganaron reinos, obraron justicia, alcanzaron promesas, taparon las bocas de leones,
34Apagaron fuegos impetuosos, evitaron filo de cuchillo, convalecieron de enfermedades, fueron hechos fuertes en batallas, trastornaron campos de extraños.
35Las mujeres recibieron sus muertos por resurrección; unos fueron estirados, no aceptando el rescate, para ganar mejor resurrección;
36Otros experimentaron vituperios y azotes; y á más de esto prisiones y cárceles;
37Fueron apedreados, aserrados, tentados, muertos á cuchillo; anduvieron de acá para allá cubiertos de pieles de ovejas y de cabras, pobres, angustiados, maltratados;
38De los cuales el mundo no era digno; perdidos por los desiertos, por los montes, por las cuevas y por las cavernas de la tierra.
39Y todos éstos, aprobados por testimonio de la fe, no recibieron la promesa;
40Proveyendo Dios alguna cosa mejor para nosotros, para que no fuesen perfeccionados sin nosotros.

1Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
2For by it the elders obtained a good report.
3Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.
4By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.
5By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.
6But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
7By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.
8By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.
9By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:
10For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
11Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.
12Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable.
13These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
14For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country.
15And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned.
16But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.
17By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son,
18Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called:
19Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.
20By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come.
21By faith Jacob, when he was a dying, blessed both the sons of Joseph; and worshipped, leaning upon the top of his staff.
22By faith Joseph, when he died, made mention of the departing of the children of Israel; and gave commandment concerning his bones.
23By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king’s commandment.
24By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter;
25Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;
26Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward.
27By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.
28Through faith he kept the passover, and the sprinkling of blood, lest he that destroyed the firstborn should touch them.
29By faith they passed through the Red sea as by dry land: which the Egyptians assaying to do were drowned.
30By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about seven days.
31By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace.
32And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets:
33Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions,
34Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.
35Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection:
36And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment:
37They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented;
38(Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.
39And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise:
40God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.

36Others were tried by mocking and scourging, yes, moreover by bonds and imprisonment.
37They were stoned. They were sawn apart. They were tempted. They were slain with the sword. They went around in sheep skins and in goat skins; being destitute, afflicted, ill-treated—
38of whom the world was not worthy—wandering in deserts, mountains, caves, and the holes of the earth.
39These all, having been commended for their faith, didn’t receive the promise,
40God having provided some better thing concerning us, so that apart from us they should not be made perfect.
