POR tanto, dejando la palabra del comienzo en la doctrina de Cristo, vamos adelante á la perfección; no echando otra vez el fundamento del arrepentimiento de obras muertas, y de la fe en Dios,
Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,

y he aquí lo que, con el fervor de Dios, vamos a hacer ahora.
De la doctrina de bautismos, y de la imposición de manos, y de la resurrección de los muertos, y del juicio eterno.

Porque es moralmente imposible que aquellos que han sido una vez iluminados, que así mismo han gustado el don celestial de la Eucaristía, que han sido hechos partícipes de los dones del Espíritu Santo,
Y esto haremos á la verdad, si Dios lo permitiere.

que se han alimentado con la santa palabra de Dios y la esperanza de las maravillas del siglo venidero,
Porque es imposible que los que una vez fueron iluminados y gustaron el don celestial, y fueron hechos partícipes del Espíritu Santo,

Porque la tierra que embebe la lluvia que cae a menudo sobre ella, y produce hierba que es provechosa a los que la cultivan, recibe la bendición de Dios,
Y recayeron, sean otra vez renovados para arrepentimiento, crucificando de nuevo para sí mismos al Hijo de Dios, y exponiéndole á vituperio.

mas la que brota espinas y abrojos es abandonada de su dueño, y queda expuesta a la maldición, y al fin para en ser abrasada.
Porque la tierra que embebe el agua que muchas veces vino sobre ella, y produce hierba provechosa á aquellos de los cuales es labrada, recibe bendición de Dios:
For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God:
For the land which has drunk the rain that comes often on it and produces a crop suitable for them for whose sake it is also tilled, receives blessing from God;
Por lo demás, carísimos hermanos, aunque os hablamos de esta manera, tenemos mejor opinión de vosotros y de vuestra salvación.
Mas la que produce espinas y abrojos, es reprobada, y cercana de maldición; cuyo fin será el ser abrasada.
But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned.
but if it bears thorns and thistles, it is rejected and near being cursed, whose end is to be burned.
Porque no es Dios injusto, para olvidarse de lo que habéis hecho, y de la caridad que por respeto a su Nombre habéis mostrado, en haber asistido y en asistir a los santos, o fieles necesitados.
Pero de vosotros, oh amados, esperamos mejores cosas, y más cercanas á salud, aunque hablamos así.

Deseamos que cada uno de vosotros muestre el mismo fervor hasta el fin para el cumplimiento o perfección de su esperanza,
Porque Dios no es injusto para olvidar vuestra obra y el trabajo de amor que habéis mostrado á su nombre, habiendo asistido y asistiendo aún á los santos.
For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.

a fin de que no os hagáis flojos, o remisos, sino imitadores de aquellos santos patriarcas, que por su fe, y larga paciencia han llegado a ser los herederos de las promesas celestiales.
Mas deseamos que cada uno de vosotros muestre la misma solicitud hasta el cabo, para cumplimiento de la esperanza:
And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end:

Por eso en la promesa que Dios hizo a Abrahán, como no tenía otro mayor por quien jurar, juró por sí mismo,
Que no os hagáis perezosos, mas imitadores de aquellos que por la fe y la paciencia heredan las promesas.
That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
that you won’t be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and perseverance inherited the promises.
diciendo en seguida: Está bien cierto de que yo te llenaré de bendiciones, y te multiplicaré sobremanera.
Porque prometiendo Dios á Abraham, no pudiendo jurar por otro mayor, juró por sí mismo,
For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself,

Y así aguardando con longanimidad o larga paciencia, alcanzó la promesa.
Diciendo: De cierto te bendeciré bendiciendo, y multiplicando te multiplicaré.

Ello es que los hombres juran por quien es mayor que ellos; y el juramento es la mayor seguridad que pueden dar, para terminar sus diferencias.
Y así, esperando con largura de ánimo, alcanzó la promesa.

Por lo cual queriendo Dios mostrar más cumplidamente a los herederos de la promesa la inmutabilidad de su consejo o resolución, interpuso juramento;
Porque los hombres ciertamente por el mayor que ellos juran: y el fin de todas sus controversias es el juramento para confirmación.
For men verily swear by the greater: and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all strife.

para que a vista de dos cosas inmutables, promesa y juramento, en que no es posible que Dios mienta o falte a ellas, tengamos un poderosísimo consuelo los que consideramos nuestro refugio y ponemos la mira en alcanzar los bienes que nos propone la esperanza,
Por lo cual, queriendo Dios mostrar más abundantemente á los herederos de la promesa la inmutabilidad de su consejo, interpuso juramento;
Where in God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath:

la cual sirve a nuestra alma como de una áncora segura y firme, y penetra hasta el Santuario que está del velo adentro:
Para que por dos cosas inmutables, en las cuales es imposible que Dios mienta, tengamos un fortísimo consuelo, los que nos acogemos á trabarnos de la esperanza propuesta:
That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:

Donde entró Jesús por nosotros el primero como nuestro precursor, constituido sumo sacerdote por toda la eternidad según el orden de Melquisedec.
La cual tenemos como segura y firme ancla del alma, y que entra hasta dentro del velo;
Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;

En efecto, este Melquisedec, rey de Salem, sacerdote del Dios altísimo, es el que salió al encuentro a Abrahán cuando volvía victorioso de la derrota de los cuatro reyes, y el que le bendijo;
Donde entró por nosotros como precursor Jesús, hecho Pontífice eternalmente según el orden de Melchîsedec.
Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
