El Señor dice: «¡Israel, qué bien recuerdo aquellos primeros días encantadores, cuando te conduje a través del desierto! ¡Recuerdo con alegría cuando te vi nacer y tus primeros pasos! ¡Cuánto me satisfacía, como los primeros higos del verano en su primer año! Pero al llegar a Baal Peor me abandonaste y te fuiste tras los dioses falsos. ¡Y te volviste tan repugnante como esos ídolos que adorabas!
Como uvas en el desierto hallé á Israel: como la fruta temprana de la higuera en su principio vi á vuestros padres. Ellos entraron á Baal-peor, y se apartaron para vergüenza, é hiciéronse abominables como aquello que amaron.
