1Y sucedió que en el decimocuarto año del rey Ezequías, Senaquerib, rey de Asiria, subió contra todas las ciudades amuralladas de Judá y las tomó.
2El rey de Asiria envió a un alto oficial a Laquis a Jerusalén y al rey Ezequías con gran fuerza, y él tomó posesión de su posición junto al arroyo del estanque más alto, junto a la carretera del lavandero.
3Y salió a él Eliaquim, hijo de Hilcías, que estaba sobre la casa, y a Sebna el escriba, y a Joa, el hijo de Asaf, el registrador.
4Entonces él alto oficial les dijo: Digan ahora a Ezequías: Estas son las palabras del gran rey, el rey de Asiria: ¿Qué confianza es esta que tienes?
5Dices que tienes un plan y una fuerza para la guerra, pero estas son solo palabras: ahora, ¿en quién buscas apoyo, que has ido en contra de mi autoridad?
6Mira, estás basando tu esperanza en esa vara rota de Egipto, que atraviesa la mano de un hombre si la usa para un apoyo; porque así es el faraón, rey de Egipto, para todos los que confían en él.
7Y si me dices: Nuestra esperanza está en el Señor nuestro Dios; ¿Acaso no es aquel cuyos lugares altos y altares ha quitado Ezequías, diciendo a Judá y Jerusalén que la adoración solo se puede dar ante este altar?
8Y ahora, ponte de acuerdo con mi maestro, el rey de Asiria, y te daré dos mil caballos, si eres capaz de ponerles jinetes.
9Entonces, ¿cómo puedes avergonzar al menor de los sirvientes de mi amo? y has puesto tu esperanza en Egipto por los carros de guerra y los jinetes:
10¿Y ahora he venido a enviar destrucción a esta tierra sin la autoridad del Señor? Fue el mismo Señor quien me dijo: “Sube contra esta tierra y destrúyela”.
11Entonces Eliaquim, Sebna y Joa dijeron al alto oficial: Por favor, utiliza el lenguaje arameo para hablar con tus sirvientes, porque estamos acostumbrados y no hacemos uso del lenguaje de los judíos en la audiencia de la gente en la pared.
12Pero el Alto oficial dijo: ¿Es para tu maestro o para ti que mi maestro me ha enviado a decir estas palabras? ¿No me ha enviado a los hombres sentados en la pared? porque son las personas a las que les faltará comida y se comerán su propio estiércol y sus propios orines cuando el pueblo esté cerrado.
13Entonces el Alto oficial se levantó y dijo en voz alta en el lenguaje de los judíos: “Escuchen las palabras del gran rey, el rey de Asiria:
14Esto es lo que dice el rey: No te dejes engañar por Ezequías, porque no hay salvación para ti en él.
15Y no permitas que Ezequías te haga confiar en el Señor, diciendo: El Señor ciertamente nos mantendrá a salvo, y este pueblo no será entregado en manos del rey de Asiria.
16No escuches a Ezequías, porque esto es lo que dice el rey de Asiria: Haz las paces conmigo, y sal a mí; y todos serán libres de tomar el fruto de su vid y de su higuera, y el agua de su manantial;
17Hasta que yo venga y los lleve a una tierra como la de ustedes, una tierra de grano y vino, una tierra de pan y viñas.
18No le presten atención a Ezequías cuando te dice: El Señor nos mantendrá a salvo. ¿Alguno de los dioses de las naciones ha impedido que su tierra caiga en manos del rey de Asiria?
19¿Dónde están los dioses de Hamat y de Arfad? ¿Dónde están los dioses de Sefarvaim? ¿Dónde están los dioses de Samaria? ¿Y han mantenido a Samaria fuera de mi mano?
20¿Quién, entre todos los dioses de estos países, ha impedido que su país caiga en mis manos para dar razón al pensamiento de que el Señor evitará que Jerusalén caiga en mis manos?
21Pero se quedaron callados y no le dieron respuesta; porque la orden del rey era que no le dieran respuesta.
22Entonces Eliaquim, el hijo de Hilcías, que estaba sobre la casa, y Sebna el escriba, y Joa, el hijo de Asaf, el registrador, llegaron a Ezequías con sus ropas rasgadas como señal de dolor, y le dieron un relato de lo que el alto oficial había dicho.

1ACONTECIÓ en el año catorce del rey Ezechîas, que Sennachêrib rey de Asiria subió contra todas las ciudades fuertes de Judá, y tomólas.
2Y el rey de Asiria envió á Rabsaces con grande ejército desde Lachîs á Jerusalem al rey Ezechîas: y asentó el campo á los caños de la pesquera de arriba, en el camino de la heredad del Lavador.
3Y salió á él Eliacim hijo de Hilcías mayordomo, y Sebna, escriba, y Joah hijo de Asaph, canciller.
4A los cuales dijo Rabsaces: Ahora pues, diréis á Ezechîas: El gran rey, el rey de Asiria, dice así: ¿Qué confianza es ésta en que confías?
5Digo, alegas tú, (empero palabras vanas) que tengo consejo y fortaleza para la guerra. Ahora bien, ¿en quién confías que te rebelas contra mí?
6He aquí que confías en este bordón de caña frágil, en Egipto, sobre el cual si alguien se apoyare, entrarásele por la mano, y se la atravesará. Tal es Faraón rey de Egipto para con todos los que en él confían.
7Y si me dijeres, En Jehová nuestro Dios confiamos; ¿no es éste aquel cuyos altos y cuyos altares hizo quitar Ezechîas, y dijo á Judá y á Jerusalem: Delante de este altar adoraréis?
8Ahora pues yo te ruego que des rehenes al rey de Asiria mi señor, y yo te daré dos mil caballos, si pudieres tú dar caballeros que cabalguen sobre ellos.
9¿Cómo pues harás volver el rostro de un capitán de los más pequeños siervos de mi señor, aunque estés confiado en Egipto por sus carros y hombres de á caballo?
10¿Y por ventura vine yo ahora á esta tierra para destruirla sin Jehová? Jehová me dijo: Sube á esta tierra para destruirla.
11Entonces dijo Eliacim, y Sebna y Joah á Rabsaces: Rogámoste que hables á tus siervos en lengua siriaca, porque nosotros la entendemos: y no hables con nosotros en lengua judáica, oyéndolo el pueblo que está sobre el muro.
12Y dijo Rabsaces: ¿Envióme mi señor á ti y á tu señor, á que dijese estas palabras, y no á los hombres que están sobre el muro, para comer su estiércol y beber su orina con vosotros?
13Púsose luego en pie Rabsaces, y gritó á grande voz en lengua judáica, diciendo: Oid las palabras del gran rey, el rey de Asiria.
14El rey dice así: No os engañe Ezechîas, porque no os podrá librar.
15Ni os haga Ezechîas confiar en Jehová, diciendo: Ciertamente Jehová nos librará: no será entregada esta ciudad en manos del rey de Asiria.
16No escuchéis á Ezechîas: porque el rey de Asiria dice así: Haced conmigo paz, y salid á mí; y coma cada uno de su viña, y cada uno de su higuera, y beba cada cual las aguas de su pozo;
17Hasta que yo venga y os lleve á una tierra como la vuestra, tierra de grano y de vino, tierra de pan y de viñas.
18Mirad no os engañe Ezechîas diciendo: Jehová nos librará. ¿Libraron los dioses de las gentes cada uno á su tierra de la mano del rey de Asiria?
19¿Dónde está el dios de Hamath y de Arphad? ¿dónde está el dios de Sepharvaim? ¿libraron á Samaria de mi mano?
20¿Qué dios hay entre los dioses de estas tierras, que haya librado su tierra de mi mano, para que Jehová libre de mi mano á Jerusalem?
21Mas callaron, y no le respondieron palabra; porque el rey así lo había mandado, diciendo: No le respondáis.
22Entonces Eliacim hijo de Hilcías mayordomo, y Sebna escriba, y Joah hijo de Asaph canciller, vinieron á Ezechîas rotos sus vestidos, y contáronle las palabras de Rabsaces.

1Now it came to pass in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, that Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the defenced cities of Judah, and took them.
2And the king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem unto king Hezekiah with a great army. And he stood by the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the fuller’s field.
3Then came forth unto him Eliakim, Hilkiah’s son, which was over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, Asaph’s son, the recorder.
4And Rabshakeh said unto them, Say ye now to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest?
5I say, sayest thou, (but they are but vain words) I have counsel and strength for war: now on whom dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?
6Lo, thou trustest in the staff of this broken reed, on Egypt; whereon if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all that trust in him.
7But if thou say to me, We trust in the LORD our God: is it not he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and said to Judah and to Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar?
8Now therefore give pledges, I pray thee, to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.
9How then wilt thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master’s servants, and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?
10And am I now come up without the LORD against this land to destroy it? the LORD said unto me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.
11Then said Eliakim and Shebna and Joah unto Rabshakeh, Speak, I pray thee, unto thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and speak not to us in the Jews’ language, in the ears of the people that are on the wall.
12But Rabshakeh said, Hath my master sent me to thy master and to thee to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men that sit upon the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you?
13Then Rabshakeh stood, and cried with a loud voice in the Jews’ language, and said, Hear ye the words of the great king, the king of Assyria.
14Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you.
15Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will surely deliver us: this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.
16Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me: and eat ye every one of his vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his own cistern;
17Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards.
18Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, The LORD will deliver us. Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?
19Where are the gods of Hamath and Arphad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim? and have they delivered Samaria out of my hand?
20Who are they among all the gods of these lands, that have delivered their land out of my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?
21But they held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king’s commandment was, saying, Answer him not.
22Then came Eliakim, the son of Hilkiah, that was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.
World English Bible
1Now in the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria attacked all of the fortified cities of Judah and captured them.
2The king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem to King Hezekiah with a large army. He stood by the aqueduct from the upper pool in the fuller’s field highway.
3Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph the recorder came out to him.
4Rabshakeh said to them, “Now tell Hezekiah, ‘The great king, the king of Assyria, says, “What confidence is this in which you trust?
5I say that your counsel and strength for the war are only vain words. Now in whom do you trust, that you have rebelled against me?
6Behold, you trust in the staff of this bruised reed, even in Egypt, which if a man leans on it, it will go into his hand and pierce it. So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him.
7But if you tell me, ‘We trust in the LORD our God,’ isn’t that he whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has taken away, and has said to Judah and to Jerusalem, ‘You shall worship before this altar’?”
8Now therefore, please make a pledge to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able on your part to set riders on them.
9How then can you turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master’s servants, and put your trust in Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?
10Have I come up now without the LORD against this land to destroy it? The LORD said to me, “Go up against this land, and destroy it.”’”
11Then Eliakim, Shebna and Joah said to Rabshakeh, “Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand it. Don’t speak to us in the Jews’ language in the hearing of the people who are on the wall.”
12But Rabshakeh said, “Has my master sent me only to your master and to you, to speak these words, and not to the men who sit on the wall, who will eat their own dung and drink their own urine with you?”
13Then Rabshakeh stood, and called out with a loud voice in the Jews’ language, and said, “Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria!
14The king says, ‘Don’t let Hezekiah deceive you; for he will not be able to deliver you.
15Don’t let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, “The LORD will surely deliver us. This city won’t be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.”’
16Don’t listen to Hezekiah, for the king of Assyria says, ‘Make your peace with me, and come out to me; and each of you eat from his vine, and each one from his fig tree, and each one of you drink the waters of his own cistern;
17until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards.
18Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, “The LORD will deliver us.” Have any of the gods of the nations delivered their lands from the hand of the king of Assyria?
19Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Have they delivered Samaria from my hand?
20Who are they among all the gods of these countries that have delivered their country out of my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?’”
21But they remained silent, and said nothing in reply, for the king’s commandment was, “Don’t answer him.”
22Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.
