1Und es geschah im vierzehnten Jahre des Königs Hiskia, da zog Sanherib, der König von Assyrien, herauf wider alle festen Städte Judas und nahm sie ein.
2Und der König von Assyrien sandte von Lachis den Rabsake zum König Hiskia, mit einem großen Heere, nach Jerusalem; und er hielt an der Wasserleitung des oberen Teiches, an der Straße des Walkerfeldes.
3Da gingen zu ihm hinaus Eljakim, der Sohn Hilkijas, der über das Haus war, und Schebna, der Schreiber, und Joach, der Sohn Asaphs, der Geschichtsschreiber.
4Und der Rabsake sprach zu ihnen: Saget doch zu Hiskia: So spricht der große König, der König von Assyrien: Was ist das für ein Vertrauen, womit du vertraust?
5Ich sage: Nur ein Wort der Lippen ist Rat und Macht zum Kriege. Nun, auf wen vertraust du, daß du dich wider mich empört hast?
6Siehe, du vertraust auf jenen geknickten Rohrstab, auf Ägypten, der, wenn jemand sich auf ihn stützt, ihm in die Hand fährt und sie durchbohrt. So ist der Pharao, der König von Ägypten, allen, die auf ihn vertrauen.
7Und wenn du zu mir sprichst: Auf Jehova, unseren Gott, vertrauen wir; ist er es nicht, dessen Höhen und dessen Altäre Hiskia hinweggetan, da er zu Juda und zu Jerusalem gesagt hat: Vor diesem Altar sollt ihr anbeten?
8Und nun, laß dich doch ein mit meinem Herrn, dem König von Assyrien; und ich will dir zweitausend Rosse geben, wenn du dir Reiter darauf setzen kannst.
9Und wie wolltest du einen einzigen Befehlshaber von den geringsten Knechten meines Herrn zurücktreiben? Aber du vertraust auf Ägypten der Wagen und Reiter wegen.
10Und nun, bin ich ohne Jehova wider dieses Land heraufgezogen, um es zu verheeren? Jehova hat zu mir gesagt: Ziehe hinauf in dieses Land und verheere es.
11Und Eljakim und Schebna und Joach sprachen zu dem Rabsake: Rede doch zu deinen Knechten auf aramäisch, denn wir verstehen es; und rede nicht zu uns auf jüdisch vor den Ohren des Volkes, das auf der Mauer ist.
12Und der Rabsake sprach: Hat mein Herr mich zu deinem Herrn und zu dir gesandt, um diese Worte zu reden? nicht zu den Männern, die auf der Mauer sitzen, um mit euch ihren Kot zu essen und ihren Harn zu trinken?
13Und der Rabsake trat hin und rief mit lauter Stimme auf jüdisch und sprach: Höret die Worte des großen Königs, des Königs von Assyrien!
14So spricht der König: Daß Hiskia euch nicht täusche; denn er wird euch nicht zu erretten vermögen.
15Und daß Hiskia euch nicht auf Jehova vertröste, indem er spricht: Jehova wird uns gewißlich erretten; diese Stadt wird nicht in die Hand des Königs von Assyrien gegeben werden.
16Höret nicht auf Hiskia; denn also spricht der König von Assyrien: Machet Frieden mit mir und kommet zu mir heraus, so sollt ihr ein jeder von seinem Weinstock und ein jeder von seinem Feigenbaum essen, und ein jeder das Wasser seines Brunnens trinken,
17bis ich komme und euch in ein Land hole wie euer Land, ein Land von Korn und Most, ein Land von Brot und Weinbergen.
18Daß Hiskia euch nicht verführe, indem er spricht: Jehova wird uns erretten! Haben die Götter der Nationen ein jeder sein Land von der Hand des Königs von Assyrien errettet?
19Wo sind die Götter von Hammath und Arpad? Wo die Götter von Sepharwaim? Und haben sie Samaria von meiner Hand errettet?
20Welche sind es unter allen Göttern dieser Länder, die ihr Land von meiner Hand erretten haben, daß Jehova Jerusalem von meiner Hand erretten sollte?
21Und sie schwiegen still und antworteten ihm kein Wort; denn es war das Gebot des Königs, der gesagt hatte: Ihr sollt ihm nicht antworten. -
22Und Eljakim, der Sohn Hilkijas, der über das Haus war, und Schebna, der Schreiber, und Joach, der Sohn Asaphs, der Geschichtsschreiber, kamen zu Hiskia mit zerrissenen Kleidern und berichteten ihm die Worte des Rabsake.

1ACONTECIÓ en el año catorce del rey Ezechîas, que Sennachêrib rey de Asiria subió contra todas las ciudades fuertes de Judá, y tomólas.
2Y el rey de Asiria envió á Rabsaces con grande ejército desde Lachîs á Jerusalem al rey Ezechîas: y asentó el campo á los caños de la pesquera de arriba, en el camino de la heredad del Lavador.
3Y salió á él Eliacim hijo de Hilcías mayordomo, y Sebna, escriba, y Joah hijo de Asaph, canciller.
4A los cuales dijo Rabsaces: Ahora pues, diréis á Ezechîas: El gran rey, el rey de Asiria, dice así: ¿Qué confianza es ésta en que confías?
5Digo, alegas tú, (empero palabras vanas) que tengo consejo y fortaleza para la guerra. Ahora bien, ¿en quién confías que te rebelas contra mí?
6He aquí que confías en este bordón de caña frágil, en Egipto, sobre el cual si alguien se apoyare, entrarásele por la mano, y se la atravesará. Tal es Faraón rey de Egipto para con todos los que en él confían.
7Y si me dijeres, En Jehová nuestro Dios confiamos; ¿no es éste aquel cuyos altos y cuyos altares hizo quitar Ezechîas, y dijo á Judá y á Jerusalem: Delante de este altar adoraréis?
8Ahora pues yo te ruego que des rehenes al rey de Asiria mi señor, y yo te daré dos mil caballos, si pudieres tú dar caballeros que cabalguen sobre ellos.
9¿Cómo pues harás volver el rostro de un capitán de los más pequeños siervos de mi señor, aunque estés confiado en Egipto por sus carros y hombres de á caballo?
10¿Y por ventura vine yo ahora á esta tierra para destruirla sin Jehová? Jehová me dijo: Sube á esta tierra para destruirla.
11Entonces dijo Eliacim, y Sebna y Joah á Rabsaces: Rogámoste que hables á tus siervos en lengua siriaca, porque nosotros la entendemos: y no hables con nosotros en lengua judáica, oyéndolo el pueblo que está sobre el muro.
12Y dijo Rabsaces: ¿Envióme mi señor á ti y á tu señor, á que dijese estas palabras, y no á los hombres que están sobre el muro, para comer su estiércol y beber su orina con vosotros?
13Púsose luego en pie Rabsaces, y gritó á grande voz en lengua judáica, diciendo: Oid las palabras del gran rey, el rey de Asiria.
14El rey dice así: No os engañe Ezechîas, porque no os podrá librar.
15Ni os haga Ezechîas confiar en Jehová, diciendo: Ciertamente Jehová nos librará: no será entregada esta ciudad en manos del rey de Asiria.
16No escuchéis á Ezechîas: porque el rey de Asiria dice así: Haced conmigo paz, y salid á mí; y coma cada uno de su viña, y cada uno de su higuera, y beba cada cual las aguas de su pozo;
17Hasta que yo venga y os lleve á una tierra como la vuestra, tierra de grano y de vino, tierra de pan y de viñas.
18Mirad no os engañe Ezechîas diciendo: Jehová nos librará. ¿Libraron los dioses de las gentes cada uno á su tierra de la mano del rey de Asiria?
19¿Dónde está el dios de Hamath y de Arphad? ¿dónde está el dios de Sepharvaim? ¿libraron á Samaria de mi mano?
20¿Qué dios hay entre los dioses de estas tierras, que haya librado su tierra de mi mano, para que Jehová libre de mi mano á Jerusalem?
21Mas callaron, y no le respondieron palabra; porque el rey así lo había mandado, diciendo: No le respondáis.
22Entonces Eliacim hijo de Hilcías mayordomo, y Sebna escriba, y Joah hijo de Asaph canciller, vinieron á Ezechîas rotos sus vestidos, y contáronle las palabras de Rabsaces.

1Now it came to pass in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, that Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the defenced cities of Judah, and took them.
2And the king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem unto king Hezekiah with a great army. And he stood by the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the fuller’s field.
3Then came forth unto him Eliakim, Hilkiah’s son, which was over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, Asaph’s son, the recorder.
4And Rabshakeh said unto them, Say ye now to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest?
5I say, sayest thou, (but they are but vain words) I have counsel and strength for war: now on whom dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?
6Lo, thou trustest in the staff of this broken reed, on Egypt; whereon if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all that trust in him.
7But if thou say to me, We trust in the LORD our God: is it not he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and said to Judah and to Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar?
8Now therefore give pledges, I pray thee, to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.
9How then wilt thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master’s servants, and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?
10And am I now come up without the LORD against this land to destroy it? the LORD said unto me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.
11Then said Eliakim and Shebna and Joah unto Rabshakeh, Speak, I pray thee, unto thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and speak not to us in the Jews’ language, in the ears of the people that are on the wall.
12But Rabshakeh said, Hath my master sent me to thy master and to thee to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men that sit upon the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you?
13Then Rabshakeh stood, and cried with a loud voice in the Jews’ language, and said, Hear ye the words of the great king, the king of Assyria.
14Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you.
15Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will surely deliver us: this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.
16Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me: and eat ye every one of his vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his own cistern;
17Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards.
18Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, The LORD will deliver us. Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?
19Where are the gods of Hamath and Arphad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim? and have they delivered Samaria out of my hand?
20Who are they among all the gods of these lands, that have delivered their land out of my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?
21But they held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king’s commandment was, saying, Answer him not.
22Then came Eliakim, the son of Hilkiah, that was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.
World English Bible
1Now in the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria attacked all of the fortified cities of Judah and captured them.
2The king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem to King Hezekiah with a large army. He stood by the aqueduct from the upper pool in the fuller’s field highway.
3Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph the recorder came out to him.
4Rabshakeh said to them, “Now tell Hezekiah, ‘The great king, the king of Assyria, says, “What confidence is this in which you trust?
5I say that your counsel and strength for the war are only vain words. Now in whom do you trust, that you have rebelled against me?
6Behold, you trust in the staff of this bruised reed, even in Egypt, which if a man leans on it, it will go into his hand and pierce it. So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him.
7But if you tell me, ‘We trust in the LORD our God,’ isn’t that he whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has taken away, and has said to Judah and to Jerusalem, ‘You shall worship before this altar’?”
8Now therefore, please make a pledge to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able on your part to set riders on them.
9How then can you turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master’s servants, and put your trust in Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?
10Have I come up now without the LORD against this land to destroy it? The LORD said to me, “Go up against this land, and destroy it.”’”
11Then Eliakim, Shebna and Joah said to Rabshakeh, “Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand it. Don’t speak to us in the Jews’ language in the hearing of the people who are on the wall.”
12But Rabshakeh said, “Has my master sent me only to your master and to you, to speak these words, and not to the men who sit on the wall, who will eat their own dung and drink their own urine with you?”
13Then Rabshakeh stood, and called out with a loud voice in the Jews’ language, and said, “Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria!
14The king says, ‘Don’t let Hezekiah deceive you; for he will not be able to deliver you.
15Don’t let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, “The LORD will surely deliver us. This city won’t be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.”’
16Don’t listen to Hezekiah, for the king of Assyria says, ‘Make your peace with me, and come out to me; and each of you eat from his vine, and each one from his fig tree, and each one of you drink the waters of his own cistern;
17until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards.
18Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, “The LORD will deliver us.” Have any of the gods of the nations delivered their lands from the hand of the king of Assyria?
19Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Have they delivered Samaria from my hand?
20Who are they among all the gods of these countries that have delivered their country out of my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?’”
21But they remained silent, and said nothing in reply, for the king’s commandment was, “Don’t answer him.”
22Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.
