1Así que en el año catorce del reinado del rey Ezequías llegó Senaquerib, rey de Asiria, a atacar las ciudades amuralladas de Judá, y las conquistó.
2Luego, al frente de un gran ejército, envió desde Laquis a su representante personal para que se entrevistara con el rey Ezequías en Jerusalén. Acampó cerca del acueducto del estanque de arriba, por el camino del campo donde se blanquean telas.
3Eliaquín, hijo de Jilquías, primer ministro de Israel, Sebna escriba del rey, y Joa, hijo de Asaf, secretario real, se constituyeron en comité de tregua y salieron de la ciudad a su encuentro.
4El embajador asirio les dijo que fueran a decirle a Ezequías: «El poderoso rey de Asiria dice que eres un necio si piensas que el rey de Egipto te ayudará.
5¿Qué valor tienen las promesas del faraón? Las palabras solas nada son ante la fuerza, ¡y tú confiando en su ayuda, te has rebelado contra mí!
6Egipto es un aliado peligroso. Es vara afilada que te atravesará la mano si te apoyas en ella. Eso les ha pasado a cuantos han buscado apoyo en él.
7Pero quizá digas: “¡Confiamos en el Señor Dios nuestro!”. ¿Ah, sí? ¿No es acaso el mismo a quien su rey insultó, derribando sus templos y altares en los montes y haciendo que todos los de Judá adoren únicamente en los altares aquí en Jerusalén?
8»Mi señor, el rey de Asiria, quiere hacer contigo una pequeña apuesta: ¿A que en tu ejército no te quedan dos mil hombres? Si te quedan, él te dará dos mil caballos para que ellos los monten. Con tan insignificante ejército, ¿cómo crees poder enfrentarte siquiera al más pequeño escuadrón de mi señor? Porque de Egipto no obtendrás socorro.

10Es más: ¿crees que he venido acá sin que el Señor me dijera que me apoderara de esta tierra? El Señor me dijo: “Ve y destrúyela”».
11Entonces Eliaquín, Sebna y Joa le dijeron: ―Te rogamos que nos hables en arameo que nosotros entendemos bastante bien. No nos hables en hebreo, porque te oirá la gente de la muralla.
12Pero él respondió: ―Mi señor quiere que todos los de Jerusalén escuchen esto y no solamente ustedes. Quiere que sepan que si no se rinden, esta ciudad será asediada hasta que cada uno tenga tanta hambre y tanta sed que se coma sus propios excrementos y se beba su propia orina.
13Luego gritó en hebreo a los judíos que escuchaban desde la muralla: ―¡Escuchen las palabras del gran monarca, el rey de Asiria!
14No dejen que los engañe Ezequías; nada que él haga los salvará.
15No dejen que les haga confiar en el Señor diciendo que el Señor no permitirá que el rey de Asiria los conquiste.
16No escuchen a Ezequías, porque este es el ofrecimiento que el rey de Asiria les hace: Entréguenme un obsequio como prenda de rendición; abran las puertas y salgan, y yo haré que cada uno posea su hacienda, su huerto y agua,
17hasta que haga los arreglos para llevarlos a un país muy semejante a este, a una tierra de abundantes cosechas de trigo y uvas, un país de abundancia.
18No permitan que Ezequías los prive de todo esto diciendo que el Señor los librará de mis ejércitos. Los dioses de alguna otra nación, ¿han triunfado jamás sobre los ejércitos del rey de Asiria?
19¿No recuerdan lo que les hice a Jamat y a Arfad? ¿Los salvaron acaso sus dioses? ¿Y qué de Sefarvayin y Samaria? ¿Dónde están ahora sus dioses?
20De todos los dioses de estas tierras, ¿cuáles han librado alguna vez de mi poder a su pueblo? ¡Nómbrenme siquiera uno! ¿Y creen que este Dios suyo pueda librar de mis manos a Jerusalén? ¡No sean ridículos!
21Pero el pueblo permaneció en silencio, no respondió palabra porque Ezequías les había dicho que no replicaran nada.
22Entonces Eliaquín, hijo de Jilquías, primer ministro, Sebna, el escriba real, y Joa, hijo de Asaf, secretario real, volvieron a donde estaba Ezequías con la ropa hecha trizas en señal de desesperación y le contaron todo lo ocurrido.

1ACONTECIÓ en el año catorce del rey Ezechîas, que Sennachêrib rey de Asiria subió contra todas las ciudades fuertes de Judá, y tomólas.
2Y el rey de Asiria envió á Rabsaces con grande ejército desde Lachîs á Jerusalem al rey Ezechîas: y asentó el campo á los caños de la pesquera de arriba, en el camino de la heredad del Lavador.
3Y salió á él Eliacim hijo de Hilcías mayordomo, y Sebna, escriba, y Joah hijo de Asaph, canciller.
4A los cuales dijo Rabsaces: Ahora pues, diréis á Ezechîas: El gran rey, el rey de Asiria, dice así: ¿Qué confianza es ésta en que confías?
5Digo, alegas tú, (empero palabras vanas) que tengo consejo y fortaleza para la guerra. Ahora bien, ¿en quién confías que te rebelas contra mí?
6He aquí que confías en este bordón de caña frágil, en Egipto, sobre el cual si alguien se apoyare, entrarásele por la mano, y se la atravesará. Tal es Faraón rey de Egipto para con todos los que en él confían.
7Y si me dijeres, En Jehová nuestro Dios confiamos; ¿no es éste aquel cuyos altos y cuyos altares hizo quitar Ezechîas, y dijo á Judá y á Jerusalem: Delante de este altar adoraréis?
8Ahora pues yo te ruego que des rehenes al rey de Asiria mi señor, y yo te daré dos mil caballos, si pudieres tú dar caballeros que cabalguen sobre ellos.
9¿Cómo pues harás volver el rostro de un capitán de los más pequeños siervos de mi señor, aunque estés confiado en Egipto por sus carros y hombres de á caballo?
10¿Y por ventura vine yo ahora á esta tierra para destruirla sin Jehová? Jehová me dijo: Sube á esta tierra para destruirla.
11Entonces dijo Eliacim, y Sebna y Joah á Rabsaces: Rogámoste que hables á tus siervos en lengua siriaca, porque nosotros la entendemos: y no hables con nosotros en lengua judáica, oyéndolo el pueblo que está sobre el muro.
12Y dijo Rabsaces: ¿Envióme mi señor á ti y á tu señor, á que dijese estas palabras, y no á los hombres que están sobre el muro, para comer su estiércol y beber su orina con vosotros?
13Púsose luego en pie Rabsaces, y gritó á grande voz en lengua judáica, diciendo: Oid las palabras del gran rey, el rey de Asiria.
14El rey dice así: No os engañe Ezechîas, porque no os podrá librar.
15Ni os haga Ezechîas confiar en Jehová, diciendo: Ciertamente Jehová nos librará: no será entregada esta ciudad en manos del rey de Asiria.
16No escuchéis á Ezechîas: porque el rey de Asiria dice así: Haced conmigo paz, y salid á mí; y coma cada uno de su viña, y cada uno de su higuera, y beba cada cual las aguas de su pozo;
17Hasta que yo venga y os lleve á una tierra como la vuestra, tierra de grano y de vino, tierra de pan y de viñas.
18Mirad no os engañe Ezechîas diciendo: Jehová nos librará. ¿Libraron los dioses de las gentes cada uno á su tierra de la mano del rey de Asiria?
19¿Dónde está el dios de Hamath y de Arphad? ¿dónde está el dios de Sepharvaim? ¿libraron á Samaria de mi mano?
20¿Qué dios hay entre los dioses de estas tierras, que haya librado su tierra de mi mano, para que Jehová libre de mi mano á Jerusalem?
21Mas callaron, y no le respondieron palabra; porque el rey así lo había mandado, diciendo: No le respondáis.
22Entonces Eliacim hijo de Hilcías mayordomo, y Sebna escriba, y Joah hijo de Asaph canciller, vinieron á Ezechîas rotos sus vestidos, y contáronle las palabras de Rabsaces.

1Now it came to pass in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, that Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the defenced cities of Judah, and took them.
2And the king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem unto king Hezekiah with a great army. And he stood by the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the fuller’s field.
3Then came forth unto him Eliakim, Hilkiah’s son, which was over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, Asaph’s son, the recorder.
4And Rabshakeh said unto them, Say ye now to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest?
5I say, sayest thou, (but they are but vain words) I have counsel and strength for war: now on whom dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?
6Lo, thou trustest in the staff of this broken reed, on Egypt; whereon if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all that trust in him.
7But if thou say to me, We trust in the LORD our God: is it not he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and said to Judah and to Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar?
8Now therefore give pledges, I pray thee, to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.
9How then wilt thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master’s servants, and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?
10And am I now come up without the LORD against this land to destroy it? the LORD said unto me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.
11Then said Eliakim and Shebna and Joah unto Rabshakeh, Speak, I pray thee, unto thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and speak not to us in the Jews’ language, in the ears of the people that are on the wall.
12But Rabshakeh said, Hath my master sent me to thy master and to thee to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men that sit upon the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you?
13Then Rabshakeh stood, and cried with a loud voice in the Jews’ language, and said, Hear ye the words of the great king, the king of Assyria.
14Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you.
15Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will surely deliver us: this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.
16Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me: and eat ye every one of his vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his own cistern;
17Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards.
18Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, The LORD will deliver us. Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?
19Where are the gods of Hamath and Arphad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim? and have they delivered Samaria out of my hand?
20Who are they among all the gods of these lands, that have delivered their land out of my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?
21But they held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king’s commandment was, saying, Answer him not.
22Then came Eliakim, the son of Hilkiah, that was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.
World English Bible
1Now in the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria attacked all of the fortified cities of Judah and captured them.
2The king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem to King Hezekiah with a large army. He stood by the aqueduct from the upper pool in the fuller’s field highway.
3Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph the recorder came out to him.
4Rabshakeh said to them, “Now tell Hezekiah, ‘The great king, the king of Assyria, says, “What confidence is this in which you trust?
5I say that your counsel and strength for the war are only vain words. Now in whom do you trust, that you have rebelled against me?
6Behold, you trust in the staff of this bruised reed, even in Egypt, which if a man leans on it, it will go into his hand and pierce it. So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him.
7But if you tell me, ‘We trust in the LORD our God,’ isn’t that he whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has taken away, and has said to Judah and to Jerusalem, ‘You shall worship before this altar’?”
8Now therefore, please make a pledge to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able on your part to set riders on them.
9How then can you turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master’s servants, and put your trust in Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?
10Have I come up now without the LORD against this land to destroy it? The LORD said to me, “Go up against this land, and destroy it.”’”

12But Rabshakeh said, “Has my master sent me only to your master and to you, to speak these words, and not to the men who sit on the wall, who will eat their own dung and drink their own urine with you?”
13Then Rabshakeh stood, and called out with a loud voice in the Jews’ language, and said, “Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria!
14The king says, ‘Don’t let Hezekiah deceive you; for he will not be able to deliver you.
15Don’t let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, “The LORD will surely deliver us. This city won’t be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.”’
16Don’t listen to Hezekiah, for the king of Assyria says, ‘Make your peace with me, and come out to me; and each of you eat from his vine, and each one from his fig tree, and each one of you drink the waters of his own cistern;
17until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards.
18Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, “The LORD will deliver us.” Have any of the gods of the nations delivered their lands from the hand of the king of Assyria?
19Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Have they delivered Samaria from my hand?
20Who are they among all the gods of these countries that have delivered their country out of my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?’”
21But they remained silent, and said nothing in reply, for the king’s commandment was, “Don’t answer him.”
22Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.
