Tened, hermanos míos, por objeto de sumo gozo caer en varias tribulaciones,

JACOBO, siervo de Dios y del Señor Jesucristo, á las doce tribus que están esparcidas, salud.

sabiendo que la prueba de vuestra fe produce, o ejercita, la paciencia,

Hermanos míos, tened por sumo gozo cuando cayereis en diversas tentaciones;

My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;

Count it all joy, my brothers, when you fall into various temptations,

y que la paciencia perfecciona la obra; para que así vengáis a ser perfectos y cabales, sin faltar en cosa alguna.

Sabiendo que la prueba de vuestra fe obra paciencia.

Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.

knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.

Mas si alguno de vosotros tiene falta de sabiduría, pídasela a Dios, que a todos da copiosamente, y no hiere a nadie; y le será concedida.

Mas tenga la paciencia perfecta su obra, para que seáis perfectos y cabales, sin faltar en alguna cosa.

But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

Let endurance have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

Pero pídala con fe sin sombra de duda, o desconfianza; pues quien anda dudando es semejante a la ola del mar alborotada y agitada de viento acá y allá.

Y si alguno de vosotros tiene falta de sabiduría, demándela á Dios, el cual da á todos abundantemente, y no zahiere; y le será dada.

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

Así que un hombre semejante no tiene que pensar que ha de recibir poco ni mucho del Señor.

Pero pida en fe, no dudando nada: porque el que duda es semejante á la onda de la mar, que es movida del viento, y echada de una parte á otra.

But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.

But let him ask in faith, without any doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, driven by the wind and tossed.

El hombre de ánimo doble es inconstante en todos sus caminos.

No piense pues el tal hombre que recibirá ninguna cosa del Señor.

For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.

For that man shouldn’t think that he will receive anything from the Lord.

Aquel hermano que sea de baja condición ponga su gloria en la verdadera exaltación suya;

El hombre de doblado ánimo es inconstante en todos sus caminos.

A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

He is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

mientras el rico la debe poner en su abatimiento, o en humillarse a sí mismo, por cuanto él se ha de pasar como la flor del heno;

El hermano que es de baja suerte, gloríese en su alteza:

Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted:

Let the brother in humble circumstances glory in his high position;

pues así como saliendo el sol ardiente se va secando la hierba, cae la flor, y se acaba toda su vistosa hermosura, así también el rico se marchitará en sus andanzas.

Mas el que es rico, en su bajeza; porque él se pasará como la flor de la hierba.

But the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away.

and the rich, in that he is made humble, because like the flower in the grass, he will pass away.

Bienaventurado, pues, aquel hombre que sufre con paciencia la tentación, o tribulación; porque después que fuere así probado, recibirá la corona de vida, que Dios ha prometido a los que le aman.

Porque salido el sol con ardor, la hierba se secó, y su flor se cayó, y pereció su hermosa apariencia: así también se marchitará el rico en todos sus caminos.

For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.

For the sun arises with the scorching wind and withers the grass; and the flower in it falls, and the beauty of its appearance perishes. So the rich man will also fade away in his pursuits.

Ninguno cuando es tentado, diga que Dios le tienta; porque Dios no puede jamás dirigirnos al mal; y así él a ninguno tienta.

Bienaventurado el varón que sufre la tentación; porque cuando fuere probado, recibirá la corona de vida, que Dios ha prometido á los que le aman.

Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.

Blessed is a person who endures temptation, for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord promised to those who love him.

Sino que cada uno es tentado, atraído y halagado por la propia concupiscencia.

Cuando alguno es tentado, no diga que es tentado de Dios: porque Dios no puede ser tentado de los malos, ni él tienta á alguno:

Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:

Let no man say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God,” for God can’t be tempted by evil, and he himself tempts no one.

Después la concupiscencia, llegando a concebir los deseos malos, pare el pecado, el cual una vez que sea consumado, engendra la muerte.

Sino que cada uno es tentado, cuando de su propia concupiscencia es atraído, y cebado.

But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.

But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own lust and enticed.

Por tanto, no os engañéis en esta materia, hermanos míos muy amados.

Y la concupiscencia, después que ha concebido, pare el pecado: y el pecado, siendo cumplido, engendra muerte.

Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

Then the lust, when it has conceived, bears sin. The sin, when it is full grown, produces death.

Toda dádiva preciosa y todo don perfecto de arriba viene, como que desciende del Padre de las luces, en quien no cabe mudanza, ni sombra de variación.

Amados hermanos míos, no erréis.

Do not err, my beloved brethren.

Don’t be deceived, my beloved brothers.

Porque por un puro querer de su voluntad nos ha engendrado para hijos suyos con la palabra de la verdad, a fin de que seamos los israelitas como las primicias de sus nuevas criaturas.

Toda buena dádiva y todo don perfecto es de lo alto, que desciende del Padre de las luces, en el cual no hay mudanza, ni sombra de variación.

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

Bien lo sabéis vosotros, hermanos míos muy queridos. Y así, sea todo hombre pronto para escuchar, pero detenido en hablar y refrenado en la ira.

El, de su voluntad nos ha engendrado por la palabra de verdad, para que seamos primicias de sus criaturas.

Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

Porque la ira del hombre no se compadece con la justicia de Dios.

Por esto, mis amados hermanos, todo hombre sea pronto para oir, tardío para hablar, tardío para airarse:

Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:

So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger;

Por lo cual dando de mano a toda inmundicia y exceso vicioso, recibid con docilidad la palabra divina que ha sido como ingerida en vosotros, y que puede salvar vuestras almas.

Porque la ira del hombre no obra la justicia de Dios.

For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.

for the anger of man doesn’t produce the righteousness of God.

Pero habéis de ponerla en práctica, y no sólo escucharla, engañándoos lastimosamente a vosotros mismos.

Por lo cual, dejando toda inmundicia y superfluidad de malicia, recibid con mansedumbre la palabra ingerida, la cual puede hacer salvas vuestras almas.

Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.

Therefore, putting away all filthiness and overflowing of wickedness, receive with humility the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

Porque quien se contenta con oír la palabra de Dios, y no la practica, erá parecido a un hombre que contempla al espejo su rostro nativo ensuciado con algunas manchas,

Mas sed hacedores de la palabra, y no tan solamente oidores, engañándoos á vosotros mismos.

But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

But be doers of the word, and not only hearers, deluding your own selves.

y que no hace más que mirarse, y se va sin quitarlas, y luego se olvidó de cómo está.

Porque si alguno oye la palabra, y no la pone por obra, este tal es semejante al hombre que considera en un espejo su rostro natural.

For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:

For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man looking at his natural face in a mirror;

Mas quien contemplare atentamente la ley perfecta de la buena nueva que es la de la libertad, y perseverare en ella, no haciéndose oyente olvidadizo, sino ejecutor de la obra, éste será por su hecho u obras bienaventurado.

Porque él se consideró á sí mismo, y se fué, y luego se olvidó qué tal era.

For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.

for he sees himself, and goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.

Que si alguno se precia de ser religioso o devoto, sin refrenar su lengua, antes bien engañando o precipitando con ella su corazón, la religión suya es vana, es falsa su piedad.

Mas el que hubiere mirado atentamente en la perfecta ley, que es la de la libertad, y perseverado en ella, no siendo oidor olvidadizo, sino hacedor de la obra, este tal será bienaventurado en su hecho.

But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

But he who looks into the perfect law of freedom and continues, not being a hearer who forgets but a doer of the work, this man will be blessed in what he does.

La religión pura y sin mácula delante de Dios Padre es ésta: Visitar, o socorrer, a los huérfanos y a las viudas en sus tribulaciones, y preservarse de la corrupción de este siglo.

Si alguno piensa ser religioso entre vosotros, y no refrena su lengua, sino engañando su corazón, la religión del tal es vana.

If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.

If anyone among you thinks himself to be religious while he doesn’t bridle his tongue, but deceives his heart, this man’s religion is worthless.

Hermanos míos, no intentéis conciliar la fe de nuestro glorioso Señor Jesucristo con la distinción de personas.

La religión pura y sin mácula delante de Dios y Padre es esta: Visitar los huérfanos y las viudas en sus tribulaciones, y guardarse sin mancha de este mundo.

Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

Pure religion and undefiled before our God and Father is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.
