Woher kommen die Kämpfe und woher die Streitigkeiten bei euch? Doch wohl daher, daß eure Lüste einen Kampf in euren Gliedern führen?

¿DE dónde vienen las guerras y los pleitos entre vosotros? ¿No son de vuestras concupiscencias, las cuales combaten en vuestros miembros?

From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?

Where do wars and fightings among you come from? Don’t they come from your pleasures that war in your members?

Ihr seid begehrlich – und gelangt doch nicht zum Besitz; ihr mordet und seid neidisch, ohne doch eure Wünsche erfüllt zu sehen; ihr lebt in Kampf und Streitigkeiten und gelangt doch nicht zum Besitz, weil ihr nicht betet;

Codiciáis, y no tenéis; matáis y ardéis de envidia, y no podéis alcanzar; combatís y guerreáis, y no tenéis lo que deseáis, porque no pedís.

Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.

You lust, and don’t have. You murder and covet, and can’t obtain. You fight and make war. You don’t have, because you don’t ask.

ihr betet wohl, empfangt aber nichts, weil ihr in böser Absicht betet, nämlich um (das Erbetene) in euren Lüsten wieder durchzubringen.

Pedís, y no recibís, porque pedís mal, para gastar en vuestros deleites.

Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.

You ask, and don’t receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures.

Ihr gottabtrünnigen Seelen! Wißt ihr nicht, daß die Freundschaft mit der Welt Feindschaft gegen Gott ist? Wer also ein Freund der Welt sein will, erweist sich als Feind Gottes.

Adúlteros y adúlteras, ¿no sabéis que la amistad del mundo es enemistad con Dios? Cualquiera pues que quisiere ser amigo del mundo, se constituye enemigo de Dios.

Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

You adulterers and adulteresses, don’t you know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.

Oder meint ihr, die Schrift mache leere Worte, wenn sie sagt: »Eifersüchtiges Verlangen hegt der Geist, den er Wohnung in uns hat nehmen lassen«?

¿Pensáis que la Escritura dice sin causa: El espíritu que mora en nosotros codicia para envidia?

Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?

Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, “The Spirit who lives in us yearns jealously”?

Um so reicher ist aber die Gnade, die er zuteilt. Darum heißt es: »Gott widersteht den Hoffärtigen, den Demütigen aber gibt er Gnade.«

Mas él da mayor gracia. Por esto dice: Dios resiste á los soberbios, y da gracia á los humildes.

But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

Unterwerft euch also Gott und widersteht dem Teufel, so wird er von euch fliehen.

Someteos pues á Dios; resistid al diablo, y de vosotros huirá.

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Be subject therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Nahet euch zu Gott, so wird er sich zu euch nahen; reinigt euch die Hände, ihr Sünder, und heiligt eure Herzen, ihr Doppelherzigen!

Allegaos á Dios, y él se allegará á vosotros. Pecadores, limpiad las manos; y vosotros de doblado ánimo, purificad los corazones.

Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners. Purify your hearts, you double-minded.

Fühlt euer Elend, trauert und weint! Euer Lachen verwandle sich in Traurigkeit und eure Freude in Betrübnis!

Afligíos, y lamentad, y llorad. Vuestra risa se convierta en lloro, y vuestro gozo en tristeza.

Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.

Lament, mourn, and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom.

Demütigt euch vor dem Herrn, so wird er euch erhöhen!

Humillaos delante del Señor, y él os ensalzará.

Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you.

Redet nicht feindselig gegeneinander, liebe Brüder! Wer feindselig gegen seinen Bruder redet oder seinen Bruder richtet, der redet feindselig gegen das Gesetz und richtet das Gesetz; wenn du aber das Gesetz richtest, so bist du nicht ein Täter des Gesetzes, sondern ein Richter.

Hermanos, no murmuréis los unos de los otros. El que murmura del hermano, y juzga á su hermano, este tal murmura de la ley, y juzga á la ley; pero si tú juzgas á la ley, no eres guardador de la ley, sino juez.

Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.

Don’t speak against one another, brothers. He who speaks against a brother and judges his brother, speaks against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge.

Nur einer ist Gesetzgeber und Richter; er, der die Macht hat zu erretten und zu verderben. Wer aber bist du, daß du dich zum Richter über den Nächsten machst?

Uno es el dador de la ley, que puede salvar y perder: ¿quién eres tú que juzgas á otro?

There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?

Only one is the lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge another?

Weiter nun: Ihr, die ihr sagt: »Heute oder morgen wollen wir in die und die Stadt ziehen, wollen dort ein Jahr bleiben, Geschäfte machen und Geld verdienen«, –

Ea ahora, los que decís: Hoy y mañana iremos á tal ciudad, y estaremos allá un año, y compraremos mercadería, y ganaremos:

Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain:

Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow let’s go into this city and spend a year there, trade, and make a profit.”

und ihr wißt doch nicht, was der morgende Tag bringen wird, wie es dann um euer Leben steht. Ihr seid doch nur ein Rauch, der für kurze Zeit sichtbar wird und dann verschwindet.

Y no sabéis lo que será mañana. Porque ¿qué es vuestra vida? Ciertamente es un vapor que se aparece por un poco de tiempo, y luego se desvanece.

Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.

Yet you don’t know what your life will be like tomorrow. For what is your life? For you are a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.

Statt dessen solltet ihr sagen: »Wenn es der Wille des Herrn ist, werden wir am Leben bleiben und dies oder jenes tun.«

En lugar de lo cual deberíais decir: Si el Señor quisiere, y si viviéremos, haremos esto ó aquello.

For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.

For you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will both live, and do this or that.”

So aber tut ihr noch groß mit euren hochfahrenden Gedanken! Alle derartige Großtuerei ist verwerflich.

Mas ahora os jactáis en vuestras soberbias. Toda jactancia semejante es mala.

But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.

But now you glory in your boasting. All such boasting is evil.

Wer also weiß, wie er sich richtig zu verhalten hat, es aber nicht tut, für den ist es Sünde.

El pecado, pues, está en aquel que sabe hacer lo bueno, y no lo hace.

Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

To him therefore who knows to do good and doesn’t do it, to him it is sin.
