Codiciáis, y no lográis; matáis, y ardéis de envidia, y no por eso conseguís vuestros deseos; litigáis, y armáis pendencias, y nada alcanzáis, porque no lo pedís a Dios.
¿DE dónde vienen las guerras y los pleitos entre vosotros? ¿No son de vuestras concupiscencias, las cuales combaten en vuestros miembros?
From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?
Where do wars and fightings among you come from? Don’t they come from your pleasures that war in your members?
Pedís quizá, y con todo no recibís; y esto es porque pedís con mala intención, para satisfacer vuestras pasiones.
Codiciáis, y no tenéis; matáis y ardéis de envidia, y no podéis alcanzar; combatís y guerreáis, y no tenéis lo que deseáis, porque no pedís.
Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.
You lust, and don’t have. You murder and covet, and can’t obtain. You fight and make war. You don’t have, because you don’t ask.
Almas adúlteras y corrompidas, ¿no sabéis que el amor de este mundo es una enemistad contra Dios? Cualquiera, pues, que quiere ser amigo del mundo, se constituye enemigo de Dios.
Pedís, y no recibís, porque pedís mal, para gastar en vuestros deleites.
Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.
You ask, and don’t receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures.
¿Pensáis acaso que sin motivo dice la Escritura: El Espíritu de Dios que habita en vosotros, os ama y codicia con celos?
Adúlteros y adúlteras, ¿no sabéis que la amistad del mundo es enemistad con Dios? Cualquiera pues que quisiere ser amigo del mundo, se constituye enemigo de Dios.
Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
You adulterers and adulteresses, don’t you know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
Pero por lo mismo da mayores gracias a los que así le aman. Por lo cual dice: Dios resiste a los soberbios, y da su gracia a los humildes.
¿Pensáis que la Escritura dice sin causa: El espíritu que mora en nosotros codicia para envidia?
Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?
Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, “The Spirit who lives in us yearns jealously”?
Estad, pues, sujetos a Dios, y resistid con su gracia al diablo, y huirá de vosotros.
Mas él da mayor gracia. Por esto dice: Dios resiste á los soberbios, y da gracia á los humildes.
But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.
But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
Allegaos a Dios, y él se allegará a vosotros. Limpiad, ¡oh pecadores!, vuestras manos; y vosotros de ánimo doble, purificad vuestros corazones.
Someteos pues á Dios; resistid al diablo, y de vosotros huirá.
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Mortificaos, entristeceos y sollozad; cámbiese, vuestra risa en llanto, y el gozo en tristeza.
Allegaos á Dios, y él se allegará á vosotros. Pecadores, limpiad las manos; y vosotros de doblado ánimo, purificad los corazones.
Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

Humillaos en la presencia del Señor, y él os ensalzará.
Afligíos, y lamentad, y llorad. Vuestra risa se convierta en lloro, y vuestro gozo en tristeza.
Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.
Lament, mourn, and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom.
No queráis, hermanos, hablar mal los unos de los otros. Quien habla mal de un hermano, o quien juzga a su hermano, éste tal de la ley habla mal, y a la ley juzga, o condena. Mas si tú juzgas a la ley, ya no eres observador de la ley, sino que te haces juez de ella.
Humillaos delante del Señor, y él os ensalzará.
Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.
Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you.
Uno solo es el legislador y el juez, que puede salvar y puede perder.
Hermanos, no murmuréis los unos de los otros. El que murmura del hermano, y juzga á su hermano, este tal murmura de la ley, y juzga á la ley; pero si tú juzgas á la ley, no eres guardador de la ley, sino juez.
Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.
Don’t speak against one another, brothers. He who speaks against a brother and judges his brother, speaks against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge.
Tú, ¿quién eres para juzgar a tu prójimo? He aquí que vosotros andáis diciendo: Hoy o mañana iremos a tal ciudad, y pasaremos allí un año, y negociaremos y aumentaremos el caudal.
Uno es el dador de la ley, que puede salvar y perder: ¿quién eres tú que juzgas á otro?
There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?
Only one is the lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge another?
Esto decís vosotros, que ignoráis lo que sucederá mañana.
Ea ahora, los que decís: Hoy y mañana iremos á tal ciudad, y estaremos allá un año, y compraremos mercadería, y ganaremos:
Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain:
Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow let’s go into this city and spend a year there, trade, and make a profit.”
Porque ¿qué cosa es vuestra vida? Un vapor que por un poco de tiempo aparece, y luego desaparece. En vez de decir: Queriendo Dios; y: Si viviéremos, haremos esto o aquello.
Y no sabéis lo que será mañana. Porque ¿qué es vuestra vida? Ciertamente es un vapor que se aparece por un poco de tiempo, y luego se desvanece.
Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.
Yet you don’t know what your life will be like tomorrow. For what is your life? For you are a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.
Mas ahora todo al contrario, os estáis regocijando en vuestras vanas presunciones. Toda presunción o jactancia semejante, es perniciosa.
En lugar de lo cual deberíais decir: Si el Señor quisiere, y si viviéremos, haremos esto ó aquello.
For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.
For you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will both live, and do this or that.”
En fin, quien conoce el bien que debe hacer, y no lo hace, por lo mismo peca.
Mas ahora os jactáis en vuestras soberbias. Toda jactancia semejante es mala.
But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.
But now you glory in your boasting. All such boasting is evil.
¡Ea, pues, oh ricos!, llorad, levantad el grito en vista de las desdichas que han de sobreveniros.
El pecado, pues, está en aquel que sabe hacer lo bueno, y no lo hace.
Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.
To him therefore who knows to do good and doesn’t do it, to him it is sin.
