Hubo un cierto levita que habitaba al lado de la montaña de Efraín, el cual se había casado con una mujer de Betlehem de Judá.

EN aquellos días, cuando no había rey en Israel, hubo un Levita que moraba como peregrino en los lados del monte de Ephraim, el cual se había tomado mujer concubina de Beth-lehem de Judá.

And it came to pass in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite sojourning on the side of mount Ephraim, who took to him a concubine out of Beth-lehem-judah.

In those days, when there was no king in Israel, there was a certain Levite living on the farther side of the hill country of Ephraim, who took for himself a concubine out of Bethlehem Judah.

Esta mujer lo dejó, y se volvió a Betlehem a la casa de su padre, con quien estuvo cuatro meses.

Y su concubina adulteró contra él, y fuese de él á casa de su padre, á Beth-lehem de Judá, y estuvo allá por tiempo de cuatro meses.

And his concubine played the whore against him, and went away from him unto her father’s house to Beth-lehem-judah, and was there four whole months.

Su marido, queriendo reconciliarse con ella, fue a buscarla y acariciarla, para traérsela otra vez consigo; y se llevó por compañía un criado con dos asnos. La mujer le recibió bien, y lo condujo a casa de su padre. Luego que su suegro tuvo noticia y llegó a divisarle, fue a su encuentro lleno de gozo,

Y levantóse su marido, y siguióla, para hablarle amorosamente y volverla, llevando consigo un criado suyo y un par de asnos; y ella le metió en la casa de su padre.

And her husband arose, and went after her, to speak friendly unto her, and to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of asses: and she brought him into her father’s house: and when the father of the damsel saw him, he rejoiced to meet him.

y lo abrazó. El yerno permaneció en casa del suegro tres días, comiendo y bebiendo con él familiarmente.

Y viéndole el padre de la moza, salióle á recibir gozoso; y detúvole su suegro, padre de la moza, y quedó en su casa tres días, comiendo y bebiendo, y reposando allí.

And his father in law, the damsel’s father, retained him; and he abode with him three days: so they did eat and drink, and lodged there.

His father-in-law, the young lady’s father, kept him there; and he stayed with him three days. So they ate and drank, and stayed there.

Mas al cuarto día, levantándose antes de amanecer, quiso partir; pero lo detuvo el suegro y le dijo: Toma primero un bocado de pan para adquirir fuerzas, y después partirás.

Y al cuarto día, como se levantaron de mañana, levantóse también el Levita para irse, y el padre de la moza dijo á su yerno: Conforta tu corazón con un bocado de pan, y después os iréis.

And it came to pass on the fourth day, when they arose early in the morning, that he rose up to depart: and the damsel’s father said unto his son in law, Comfort thine heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward go your way.

On the fourth day, they got up early in the morning, and he rose up to depart. The young lady’s father said to his son-in-law, “Strengthen your heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward you shall go your way.”

Con eso se sentaron juntos, y comieron y bebieron. Dijo entonces el suegro a su yerno: Te ruego que te quedes hoy todavía aquí, y pasemos el día juntos alegremente.

Y sentáronse ellos dos juntos, y comieron y bebieron. Y el padre de la moza dijo al varón: Yo te ruego que te quieras quedar aquí esta noche, y alegraráse tu corazón.

And they sat down, and did eat and drink both of them together: for the damsel’s father had said unto the man, Be content, I pray thee, and tarry all night, and let thine heart be merry.

So they sat down, ate, and drank, both of them together. Then the young lady’s father said to the man, “Please be pleased to stay all night, and let your heart be merry.”

Pero él levantándose se puso en acción de querer marcharse. Con todo, el suegro a fuerza de instancias lo detuvo, y lo hizo quedar consigo.

Y levantándose el varón para irse, el suegro le constriñó á que tornase y tuviese allí la noche.

And when the man rose up to depart, his father in law urged him: therefore he lodged there again.

Venida la mañana disponía el levita su viaje; mas el suegro le dijo otra vez: Te ruego que tomes un bocado para que cobres fuerzas, y en entrando más el día podrás emprender tu viaje. Comieron, pues, juntos,

Y al quinto día levantándose de mañana para irse, díjole el padre de la moza: Conforta ahora tu corazón. Y habiendo comido ambos á dos, detuviéronse hasta que ya declinaba el día.

And he arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart: and the damsel’s father said, Comfort thine heart, I pray thee. And they tarried until afternoon, and they did eat both of them.

y levantándose el joven para marcharse con su mujer y el criado, el suegro le habló nuevamente diciendo: Mira que el sol está ya muy inclinado al ocaso, y que se acerca la noche; quédate también hoy conmigo, y pasa el día alegremente, que mañana partirás para volver a tu casa.

Levantóse luego el varón para irse, él, y su concubina, y su criado. Entonces su suegro, el padre de la moza, le dijo: He aquí el día declina para ponerse el sol, ruégote que os estéis aquí la noche; he aquí que el día se acaba, ten aquí la noche, para que se alegre tu corazón; y mañana os levantaréis temprano á vuestro camino, y llegarás á tus tiendas.

And when the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father in law, the damsel’s father, said unto him, Behold, now the day draweth toward evening, I pray you tarry all night: behold, the day groweth to an end, lodge here, that thine heart may be merry; and to morrow get you early on your way, that thou mayest go home.

When the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father-in-law, the young lady’s father, said to him, “Behold, now the day draws toward evening, please stay all night. Behold, the day is ending. Stay here, that your heart may be merry; and tomorrow go on your way early, that you may go home.”

No quiso el yerno condescender a sus ruegos, sino que al punto se puso en camino, y llegó hasta enfrente de Jebús, que por otro nombre se llama Jerusalén , llevando consigo los dos asnos cargados y a su mujer.

Mas el hombre no quiso quedar allí la noche, sino que se levantó y partió, y llegó hasta enfrente de Jebus, que es Jerusalem, con su par de asnos aparejados, y con su concubina.

But the man would not tarry that night, but he rose up and departed, and came over against Jebus, which is Jerusalem; and there were with him two asses saddled, his concubine also was with him.

But the man wouldn’t stay that night, but he rose up and went near Jebus (also called Jerusalem). With him were a couple of saddled donkeys. His concubine also was with him.

Ya estaba cerca de Jebús, y se acababa el día: por lo que le dijo su criado: Ven por tu vida, torzamos el camino hacia la ciudad de los jebuseos, y paremos en ella.

Y estando ya junto á Jebus, el día había declinado mucho: y dijo el criado á su señor: Ven ahora, y vámonos á esta ciudad de los Jebuseos, para que tengamos en ella la noche.

And when they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said unto his master, Come, I pray thee, and let us turn in into this city of the Jebusites, and lodge in it.

e respondió el amo: No entraré yo en población de gente extraña, que no es de los hijos de Israel, sino que iré hasta Gabaa,

Y su señor le respondió: No iremos á ninguna ciudad de extranjeros, que no sea de los hijos de Israel: antes pasaremos hasta Gabaa. Y dijo á su criado:

And his master said unto him, We will not turn aside hither into the city of a stranger, that is not of the children of Israel; we will pass over to Gibeah.

His master said to him, “We won’t enter into the city of a foreigner that is not of the children of Israel; but we will pass over to Gibeah.”

y llegando allá posaremos en ella, o a lo menos en la ciudad de Rama.

Ven, lleguemos á uno de esos lugares, para tener la noche en Gabaa, ó en Rama.

And he said unto his servant, Come, and let us draw near to one of these places to lodge all night, in Gibeah, or in Ramah.

He said to his servant, “Come and let’s draw near to one of these places; and we will lodge in Gibeah, or in Ramah.”

Pasaron, pues, de largo la ciudad de Jebús, continuando su viaje, y el sol se les puso cerca de Gabaa, la cual está en la tribu de Benjamín;

Pasando pues, caminaron, y púsoseles el sol junto á Gabaa, que era de Benjamín.

And they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down upon them when they were by Gibeah, which belongeth to Benjamin.

Y se acogieron a ella para quedarse allí. Luego que entraron se dirigieron a la plaza de la ciudad, donde se sentaron; y no hubo uno siquiera que quisiera hospedarlos en su casa.

Y apartáronse del camino para entrar á tener allí la noche en Gabaa; y entrando, sentáronse en la plaza de la ciudad, porque no hubo quien los acogiese en casa para pasar la noche.

And they turned aside thither, to go in and to lodge in Gibeah: and when he went in, he sat him down in a street of the city: for there was no man that took them into his house to lodging.

They went over there, to go in to stay in Gibeah. He went in, and sat down in the street of the city; for there was no one who took them into his house to stay.

Cuando he aquí que al anochecer apareció un hombre anciano que volvía del campo y de su labranza, el cual era también de la montaña de Efraín, y habitaba como forastero en Gabaa; pues los hombres de aquel territorio eran hijos de Jemini o benjamitas.

Y he aquí un hombre viejo, que á la tarde venía del campo de trabajar; el cual era del monte de Ephraim, y moraba como peregrino en Gabaa, pero los moradores de aquel lugar eran hijos de Benjamín.

And, behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at even, which was also of mount Ephraim; and he sojourned in Gibeah: but the men of the place were Benjamites.

Behold, an old man came from his work out of the field at evening. Now the man was from the hill country of Ephraim, and he lived in Gibeah; but the men of the place were Benjamites.

Y levantando el anciano sus ojos vio a aquel hombre sentado en la plaza de la ciudad con su pequeño bagaje, y le preguntó: ¿De dónde vienes, y a dónde te diriges?

Y alzando el viejo los ojos, vió á aquel viajante en la plaza de la ciudad, y díjole: ¿A dónde vas, y de dónde vienes?

And when he had lifted up his eyes, he saw a wayfaring man in the street of the city: and the old man said, Whither goest thou? and whence comest thou?

He lifted up his eyes, and saw the wayfaring man in the street of the city; and the old man said, “Where are you going? Where did you come from?”

El cual le respondió: Venimos de Betlehem de Judá, y vamos a nuestra casa, que está al lado de la montaña de Efraín, de donde habíamos ido a Betlehem. Y ahora pasamos a la casa de Dios, y nadie nos quiere dar hospedaje.

Y él respondió: Pasamos de Beth-lehem de Judá á los lados del monte de Ephraim, de donde yo soy; y partí hasta Beth-lehem de Judá; y voy á la casa de Jehová, y no hay quien me reciba en casa,

And he said unto him, We are passing from Beth-lehem-judah toward the side of mount Ephraim; from thence am I: and I went to Beth-lehem-judah, but I am now going to the house of the LORD; and there is no man that receiveth me to house.

He said to him, “We are passing from Bethlehem Judah to the farther side of the hill country of Ephraim. I am from there, and I went to Bethlehem Judah. I am going to the LORD’s house; and there is no one who has taken me into his house.

Aunque tenemos paja y heno para las bestias, pan y vino para el gasto mío, y de mi mujer, tu sierva, y del criado que viene con nosotros, nada nos falta sino posada.

Aunque nosotros tenemos paja y de comer para nuestros asnos, y también tenemos pan y vino para mí y para tu sierva, y para el criado que está con tu siervo; de nada tenemos falta.

Yet there is both straw and provender for our asses; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for thy handmaid, and for the young man which is with thy servants: there is no want of any thing.

Yet there is both straw and feed for our donkeys; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for your servant, and for the young man who is with your servants. There is no lack of anything.”

El anciano le respondió: La paz sea contigo; yo te daré todo lo necesario: te ruego únicamente que no te detengas más en la plaza.

Y el hombre viejo dijo: Paz sea contigo; tu necesidad toda sea solamente á mi cargo, con tal que no tengas la noche en la plaza.

And the old man said, Peace be with thee; howsoever let all thy wants lie upon me; only lodge not in the street.

The old man said, “Peace be to you! Just let me supply all your needs, but don’t sleep in the street.”

Con esto le llevó a su casa, y dio de comer a las caballerías, y después que se lavaron los pies, los convidó a su mesa.

Y metiéndolos en su casa, dió de comer á sus asnos; y ellos se lavaron los pies, y comieron y bebieron.

So he brought him into his house, and gave provender unto the asses: and they washed their feet, and did eat and drink.

Estando cenando, y mientras con los manjares y bebida regocija sus cuerpos fatigados del viaje, vinieron unos vecinos de aquella ciudad, hijos de Belial (esto es, sin freno, ni temor de Dios) y cercando la casa del anciano, comenzaron a dar golpes en la puerta, gritando al dueño de la casa, y diciéndole: Sácanos fuera ese hombre que entró en tu casa, que queremos abusar de él.

Y cuando estaban gozosos, he aquí, que los hombres de aquella ciudad, hombres hijos de Belial, cercan la casa, y batían las puertas, diciendo al hombre viejo dueño de la casa: Saca fuera el hombre que ha entrado en tu casa, para que lo conozcamos.

Now as they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of Belial, beset the house round about, and beat at the door, and spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine house, that we may know him.

As they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain wicked fellows, surrounded the house, beating at the door; and they spoke to the master of the house, the old man, saying, “Bring out the man who came into your house, that we can have sex with him!”

Y salió a ellos el anciano, y les dijo: No queráis, hermanos, no queráis cometer semejante maldad: ya que se ha hospedado este hombre en mi casa, desistid de semejante locura.

Y saliendo á ellos aquel varón, amo de la casa, díjoles: No, hermanos míos, ruégoos que no cometáis este mal, pues que este hombre ha entrado en mi casa, no hagáis esta maldad.

And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto them, Nay, my brethren, nay, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into mine house, do not this folly.

The man, the master of the house, went out to them, and said to them, “No, my brothers, please don’t act so wickedly; since this man has come into my house, don’t do this folly.

Y, como fuera de sí, añadió: Yo tengo una hija doncella; y este hombre tiene su mujer: os las sacaré fuera para que abuséis de ellas, y saciéis vuestra pasión: solamente os ruego que no cometáis con un hombre ese crimen nefando y contra la naturaleza.

He aquí mi hija virgen, y la concubina de él: yo os las sacaré ahora; humilladlas, y haced con ellas como os pareciere, y no hagáis á este hombre cosa tan infame.

Behold, here is my daughter a maiden, and his concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you: but unto this man do not so vile a thing.

Behold, here is my virgin daughter and his concubine. I will bring them out now. Humble them, and do with them what seems good to you; but to this man don’t do any such folly.”

No querían ceder a sus razones: lo que visto por el levita, les sacó a su mujer y la abandonó a sus ultrajes; y habiendo abusado de ella toda la noche, la dejaron libre al venir la mañana.

Mas aquellos hombres no le quisieron oir; por lo que tomando aquel hombre su concubina, sacósela fuera: y ellos la conocieron, y abusaron de ella toda la noche hasta la mañana, y dejáronla cuando apuntaba el alba.

But the men would not hearken to him: so the man took his concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and abused her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go.

But the men wouldn’t listen to him; so the man grabbed his concubine, and brought her out to them; and they had sex with her, and abused her all night until the morning. When the day began to dawn, they let her go.

Entonces la mujer vino al rayar el día a la puerta de la casa, donde estaba su señor, y allí se cayó muerta.

Y ya que amanecía, la mujer vino, y cayó delante de la puerta de la casa de aquel hombre donde su señor estaba, hasta que fué de día.

Then came the woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man’s house where her lord was, till it was light.

Así que fue ya de día se levantó su marido y abrió la puerta con ánimo de buscar a su mujer, y proseguir su viaje: y he aquí que su mujer yacía postrada delante de la puerta con las manos extendidas sobre el umbral.

Y levantándose de mañana su señor, abrió las puertas de la casa, y salió para ir su camino, y he aquí, la mujer su concubina estaba tendida delante de la puerta de la casa, con las manos sobre el umbral.

And her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way: and, behold, the woman his concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, and her hands were upon the threshold.

Creyéndola él dormida, le decía: Levántate y vámonos. Mas como no respondiese, y viendo después que estaba muerta, la tomó y la puso sobre su asno, y regresó a su casa.

Y él le dijo: Levántate, y vámonos. Mas ella no respondió. Entonces la levantó el varón, y echándola sobre su asno, levantóse y fuése á su lugar.

And he said unto her, Up, and let us be going. But none answered. Then the man took her up upon an ass, and the man rose up, and gat him unto his place.

He said to her, “Get up, and let’s get going!” but no one answered. Then he took her up on the donkey; and the man rose up, and went to his place.

Apenas hubo entrado, cogió una cuchilla, y dividiendo el cadáver de su mujer con sus huesos en doce partes y trozos, los envió a todas las tribus de Israel.

Y en llegando á su casa, toma un cuchillo, y echa mano de su concubina, y despedázala con sus huesos en doce partes, y enviólas por todos los términos de Israel.

And when he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, together with her bones, into twelve pieces, and sent her into all the coasts of Israel.

A tal espectáculo todos a una clamaban: No se ha visto cosa semejante en Israel desde el día en que salieron de Egipto nuestros padres hasta ahora: decid vuestro parecer, y decretad de común acuerdo lo que se ha de hacer en este caso.

Y todo el que lo veía, decía: Jamás se ha hecho ni visto tal cosa, desde el tiempo que los hijos de Israel subieron de la tierra de Egipto hasta hoy. Considerad esto, dad consejo, y hablad.

And it was so, that all that saw it said, There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day: consider of it, take advice, and speak your minds.

It was so, that all who saw it said, “Such a deed has not been done or seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt to this day! Consider it, take counsel, and speak.”
