Pero el pueblo de Israel comenzó una vez más a adorar a otros dioses, y una vez más el Señor los entregó en mano de sus enemigos para que los oprimieran. Esta vez fue el pueblo de Madián, y lo hizo durante siete años.

Las hordas enemigas llegaban montadas en camellos en un número tan grande que no se podían contar, y se quedaban hasta que la tierra había quedado completamente destruida y saqueada.
Porque subían ellos y sus ganados, y venían con sus tiendas en grande multitud como langosta, que no había número en ellos ni en sus camellos: así venían á la tierra para devastarla.

Como resultado, Israel quedó reducido a una gran pobreza, y por fin el pueblo de Israel comenzó a clamar al Señor pidiendo ayuda.
Era pues Israel en gran manera empobrecido por los Madianitas; y los hijos de Israel clamaron á Jehová.
And Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites; and the children of Israel cried unto the LORD.

And I said unto you, I am the LORD your God; fear not the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but ye have not obeyed my voice.
I said to you, “I am the LORD your God. You shall not fear the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell.” But you have not listened to my voice.’”
Un día el ángel del Señor vino y se sentó bajo la encina de Ofra, en las tierras de Joás el abiezerita. Y su hijo Gedeón había estado trillando el trigo a mano en el fondo de un lagar para esconderlo de los madianitas.
Y vino el ángel de Jehová, y sentóse debajo del alcornoque que está en Ophra, el cual era de Joas Abiezerita; y su hijo Gedeón estaba sacudiendo el trigo en el lagar, para hacerlo esconder de los Madianitas.
And there came an angel of the LORD, and sat under an oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained unto Joash the Abi-ezrite: and his son Gideon threshed wheat by the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.

El ángel del Señor se le apareció y le dijo: ―Varón valiente y fuerte, el Señor está contigo.
Y el ángel de Jehová se le apareció, y díjole: Jehová es contigo, varón esforzado.
And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him, The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour.

―Señor mío —replicó Gedeón—, si el Señor está con nosotros, ¿por qué nos ocurre todo esto, y dónde están las maravillas que nuestros antepasados dicen que Dios hizo al sacarlos de Egipto? El Señor nos ha desechado y permite que los madianitas nos arruinen.
Y Gedeón le respondió: Ah, Señor mío, si Jehová es con nosotros, ¿por qué nos ha sobrevenido todo esto? ¿Y dónde están todas sus maravillas, que nuestros padres nos han contado, diciendo: ¿No nos sacó Jehová de Egipto? Y ahora Jehová nos ha desamparado, y nos ha entregado en mano de los Madianitas.
And Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? but now the LORD hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.
Gideon said to him, “Oh, my lord, if the LORD is with us, why then has all this happened to us? Where are all his wondrous works which our fathers told us of, saying, ‘Didn’t the LORD bring us up from Egypt?’ But now the LORD has cast us off, and delivered us into the hand of Midian.”
Entonces el Señor se volvió hacia él y le dijo: ―Yo te fortaleceré. Ve y salva a Israel de los madianitas; yo te envío.
Y mirándole Jehová, díjole: Ve con esta tu fortaleza, y salvarás á Israel de la mano de los Madianitas. ¿No te envío yo?
And the LORD looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee?
The LORD looked at him, and said, “Go in this your might, and save Israel from the hand of Midian. Haven’t I sent you?”
―Señor —repuso Gedeón—, ¿cómo puedo yo salvar a Israel? Mi familia es la más pobre de la tribu de Manasés y yo soy el menor de ella.
Entonces le respondió: Ah, Señor mío, ¿con qué tengo de salvar á Israel? He aquí que mi familia es pobre en Manasés, y yo el menor en la casa de mi padre.
And he said unto him, Oh my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.
He said to him, “O Lord, how shall I save Israel? Behold, my family is the poorest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.”
Pero el Señor le dijo: ―Yo, el Señor, estaré contigo. Tú destruirás rápidamente las hordas madianitas.
Y Jehová le dijo: Porque yo seré contigo, y herirás á los Madianitas como á un solo hombre.
And the LORD said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man.
The LORD said to him, “Surely I will be with you, and you shall strike the Midianites as one man.”
―Si es cierto que vas a ayudarme de esa manera —dijo Gedeón—, haz una señal para probarlo; pruébame que es realmente el Señor quien me está hablando.
Y él respondió: Yo te ruego, que si he hallado gracia delante de ti, me des señal de que tú has hablado conmigo.
And he said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, then shew me a sign that thou talkest with me.
He said to him, “If now I have found favor in your sight, then show me a sign that it is you who talk with me.
Pero, espera hasta que yo vaya a buscar un presente para ti. ―Bien —respondió el ángel—, me quedaré aquí hasta tu regreso.
Ruégote que no te vayas de aquí, hasta que á ti vuelva, y saque mi presente, y lo ponga delante de ti. Y él respondió: Yo esperaré hasta que vuelvas.
Depart not hence, I pray thee, until I come unto thee, and bring forth my present, and set it before thee. And he said, I will tarry until thou come again.
Please don’t go away until I come to you, and bring out my present, and lay it before you.” He said, “I will wait until you come back.”
Gedeón entró apresuradamente en la casa, asó un cabrito y preparó pan sin levadura, con veinticuatro kilos de harina. Luego tomó la carne en un canasto y el caldo en una olla, y lo llevó al ángel que estaba bajo la encina y se lo entregó.
Y entrándose Gedeón aderezó un cabrito, y panes sin levadura de un epha de harina; y puso la carne en un canastillo, y el caldo en una olla, y sacándolo presentóselo debajo de aquel alcornoque.
And Gideon went in, and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of flour: the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out unto him under the oak, and presented it.

El ángel le dijo: ―Coloca la carne y el pan sobre esta roca y vierte sobre ellos el caldo. Cuando Gedeón terminó de hacer lo ordenado,
Y el ángel de Dios le dijo: Toma la carne, y los panes sin levadura, y ponlo sobre esta peña, y vierte el caldo. Y él lo hizo así.
And the angel of God said unto him, Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes, and lay them upon this rock, and pour out the broth. And he did so.
The angel of God said to him, “Take the meat and the unleavened cakes, and lay them on this rock, and pour out the broth.” He did so.
el ángel tocó la carne y el pan con su vara, y surgió fuego de la roca y los consumió. De pronto, el ángel desapareció.
Y extendiendo el ángel de Jehová el bordón que tenía en su mano, tocó con la punta en la carne y en los panes sin levadura; y subió fuego de la peña, el cual consumió la carne y los panes sin levadura. Y el ángel de Jehová desapareció de delante de él.
Then the angel of the LORD put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there rose up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes. Then the angel of the LORD departed out of his sight.
Then the LORD’s angel stretched out the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the meat and the unleavened cakes; and fire went up out of the rock and consumed the meat and the unleavened cakes. Then the LORD’s angel departed out of his sight.
Cuando Gedeón comprendió que realmente había sido el ángel del Señor gritó: ―¡Ay, Señor Dios, he visto a tu ángel cara a cara!
Y viendo Gedeón que era el ángel de Jehová, dijo: Ah, Señor Jehová, que he visto el ángel de Jehová cara á cara.
And when Gideon perceived that he was an angel of the LORD, Gideon said, Alas, O Lord GOD! for because I have seen an angel of the LORD face to face.
Gideon saw that he was the LORD’s angel; and Gideon said, “Alas, Lord GOD! Because I have seen the LORD’s angel face to face!”
―Es cierto —respondió el Señor—. Pero no tengas miedo. No morirás.
Y Jehová le dijo: Paz á ti; no tengas temor, no morirás.
And the LORD said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die.
The LORD said to him, “Peace be to you! Don’t be afraid. You shall not die.”
Gedeón edificó allí un altar y lo llamó El Señor es la paz. El altar está en Ofra, en la tierra de los abiezeritas.
Y edificó allí Gedeón altar á Jehová, al que llamó Jehová-salom: está hasta hoy en Ophra de los Abiezeritas.
Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it Jehovah-shalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abi-ezrites.
Then Gideon built an altar there to the LORD, and called it “The LORD is Peace.” To this day it is still in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
Aquella noche el Señor le dijo que tomara el mejor toro del ganado de su padre y fuera hasta el altar de Baal y lo derribara, y destruyera el ídolo de madera de la diosa Aserá.
Y aconteció que la misma noche le dijo Jehová: Toma un toro del hato de tu padre, y otro toro de siete años, y derriba el altar de Baal que tu padre tiene, y corta también el bosque que está junto á él:
And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Take thy father’s young bullock, even the second bullock of seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the grove that is by it:
That same night, the LORD said to him, “Take your father’s bull, even the second bull seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that your father has, and cut down the Asherah that is by it.
«Edifica en su lugar un altar para el Señor tu Dios aquí sobre esta colina, colocando las piedras con esmero. Luego sacrifica el toro como holocausto al Señor, usando el ídolo de madera como leña para el fuego del altar».
Y edifica altar á Jehová tu Dios en la cumbre de este peñasco en lugar conveniente; y tomando el segundo toro, sacrifícalo en holocausto sobre la leña del bosque que habrás cortado.
And build an altar unto the LORD thy God upon the top of this rock, in the ordered place, and take the second bullock, and offer a burnt sacrifice with the wood of the grove which thou shalt cut down.
Then build an altar to the LORD your God on the top of this stronghold, in an orderly way, and take the second bull, and offer a burnt offering with the wood of the Asherah which you shall cut down.”
Gedeón llevó a diez de sus siervos e hizo lo que el Señor le había ordenado. Pero lo hizo de noche por temor a los demás miembros de su familia y a los hombres de la ciudad.
Entonces Gedeón tomó diez hombres de sus siervos, é hizo como Jehová le dijo. Mas temiendo hacerlo de día, por la familia de su padre y por los hombres de la ciudad, hízolo de noche.
Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as the LORD had said unto him: and so it was, because he feared his father’s household, and the men of the city, that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night.

A la mañana siguiente, temprano, cuando la ciudad comenzó sus actividades, alguien descubrió que el altar de Baal había sido destruido, que había desaparecido el ídolo que estaba allí, y que en su lugar había un nuevo altar, con los restos de un sacrificio sobre él.
Y á la mañana, cuando los de la ciudad se levantaron, he aquí que el altar de Baal estaba derribado, y cortado el bosque que junto á él estaba, y sacrificado aquel segundo toro en holocausto sobre el altar edificado.
And when the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was cast down, and the grove was cut down that was by it, and the second bullock was offered upon the altar that was built.

―¿Quién hizo esto? —se preguntaban todos. Finalmente se supo que había sido Gedeón, el hijo de Joás.
Y decíanse unos á otros: ¿Quién ha hecho esto? Y buscando é inquiriendo, dijéronles: Gedeón hijo de Joas lo ha hecho. Entonces los hombres de la ciudad dijeron á Joas:
And they said one to another, Who hath done this thing? And when they enquired and asked, they said, Gideon the son of Joash hath done this thing.
They said to one another, “Who has done this thing?” When they inquired and asked, they said, “Gideon the son of Joash has done this thing.”
―Tráenos a tu hijo —gritaron—. Debe morir por insultar el altar de Baal y por haber destruido el ídolo de Aserá.
Saca fuera tu hijo para que muera, por cuanto ha derribado el altar de Baal y ha cortado el bosque que junto á él estaba.
Then the men of the city said unto Joash, Bring out thy son, that he may die: because he hath cast down the altar of Baal, and because he hath cut down the grove that was by it.
Then the men of the city said to Joash, “Bring out your son, that he may die, because he has broken down the altar of Baal, and because he has cut down the Asherah that was by it.”
Pero Joás replicó a la multitud: ―¿Acaso necesita Baal la ayuda de ustedes? ¡Qué insulto para un dios! Ustedes son los que debieran morir por insultar a Baal. Si Baal es realmente un dios, ¡que cuide de sí mismo y destruya al que destruyó su altar!
Y Joas respondió á todos los que estaban junto á él: ¿Tomaréis vosotros la demanda por Baal? ¿le salvaréis vosotros? Cualquiera que tomare la demanda por él, que muera mañana. Si es Dios, contienda por sí mismo con el que derribó su altar.
And Joash said unto all that stood against him, Will ye plead for Baal? will ye save him? he that will plead for him, let him be put to death whilst it is yet morning: if he be a god, let him plead for himself, because one hath cast down his altar.
Joash said to all who stood against him, “Will you contend for Baal? Or will you save him? He who will contend for him, let him be put to death by morning! If he is a god, let him contend for himself, because someone has broken down his altar!”
Desde entonces Gedeón fue llamado Yerubaal, sobrenombre que significa: «Que Baal se cuide a sí mismo».
Y aquel día llamó él á Gedeón Jerobaal; porque dijo: Pleitee Baal contra el que derribó su altar.
Therefore on that day he called him Jerubbaal, saying, Let Baal plead against him, because he hath thrown down his altar.

Poco después los ejércitos de Madián, Amalec y otras naciones vecinas se unieron para pelear contra Israel. Cruzaron el Jordán y acamparon en el valle de Jezreel.
Y todos los Madianitas, y Amalecitas, y orientales, se juntaron á una, y pasando asentaron campo en el valle de Jezreel.
Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east were gathered together, and went over, and pitched in the valley of Jezreel.

Entonces el Espíritu del Señor descendió sobre Gedeón, y este, con un toque de trompeta, llamó a las armas, y los hombres de Abiezer acudieron a él.

But the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon, and he blew a trumpet; and Abi-ezer was gathered after him.

También envió mensajeros a Manasés, Aser, Zabulón y Neftalí convocándolos para ir a la batalla, y todos respondieron.
Y envió mensajeros por todo Manasés, el cual también se juntó con él: asimismo envió mensajeros á Aser, y á Zabulón, y á Nephtalí, los cuales salieron á encontrarles.
And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh; who also was gathered after him: and he sent messengers unto Asher, and unto Zebulun, and unto Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.

Entonces Gedeón le dijo al Señor: «Si realmente me vas a usar para salvar a Israel en la forma prometida,

And Gideon said unto God, If thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said,
Gideon said to God, “If you will save Israel by my hand, as you have spoken,
pruébamelo de esta manera: pondré un vellón de lana sobre el campo esta noche, y si mañana en la mañana la lana está húmeda y la tierra está seca, sabré que tú me ayudarás».
He aquí que yo pondré un vellón de lana en la era; y si el rocío estuviere en el vellón solamente, quedando seca toda la otra tierra, entonces entenderé que has de salvar á Israel por mi mano, como lo has dicho.
Behold, I will put a fleece of wool in the floor; and if the dew be on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the earth beside, then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said.
behold, I will put a fleece of wool on the threshing floor. If there is dew on the fleece only, and it is dry on all the ground, then I’ll know that you will save Israel by my hand, as you have spoken.”
Y ocurrió exactamente de esa manera. Cuando se levantó a la mañana siguiente, exprimió el vellón y sacó un tazón lleno de agua del rocío.
Y aconteció así: porque como se levantó de mañana, exprimiendo el vellón sacó de él el rocío, un vaso lleno de agua.
And it was so: for he rose up early on the morrow, and thrust the fleece together, and wringed the dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water.

Pero Gedeón le dijo al Señor: «Señor, no te enojes conmigo, pero permíteme hacer una prueba más. Esta es: que la lana quede seca y que la tierra amanezca mojada».
Mas Gedeón dijo á Dios: No se encienda tu ira contra mí, si aun hablare esta vez: solamente probaré ahora otra vez con el vellón. Ruégote que la sequedad sea sólo en el vellón, y el rocío sobre la tierra.
And Gideon said unto God, Let not thine anger be hot against me, and I will speak but this once: let me prove, I pray thee, but this once with the fleece; let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew.
Gideon said to God, “Don’t let your anger be kindled against me, and I will speak but this once. Please let me make a trial just this once with the fleece. Let it now be dry only on the fleece, and on all the ground let there be dew.”
Entonces el Señor hizo lo que le pidió. Aquella noche el vellón permaneció seco, pero la tierra amaneció cubierta de rocío.
Y aquella noche lo hizo Dios así: porque la sequedad fué sólo en el vellón, y en toda la tierra estuvo el rocío.
And God did so that night: for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.
