Un día Abimélec, hijo de Gedeón, visitó a sus tíos, los hermanos de su madre, en Siquén.

Y FUÉSE Abimelech hijo de Jerobaal á Sichêm, á los hermanos de su madre, y habló con ellos, y con toda la familia de la casa del padre de su madre, diciendo:

And Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem unto his mother’s brethren, and communed with them, and with all the family of the house of his mother’s father, saying,

«Vayan a hablar con los jefes de Siquén —les dijo—, y pregúntenles si quieren ser gobernados por setenta reyes, esto es, por los setenta hijos de Gedeón, o por un solo hombre; yo, que soy de su propia carne y sangre».

Yo os ruego que habléis á oídos de todos los de Sichêm: ¿Qué tenéis por mejor, que os señoreen setenta hombres, todos los hijos de Jerobaal; ó que os señoree un varón? Acordaos que yo soy hueso vuestro, y carne vuestra.

Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of Shechem, Whether is better for you, either that all the sons of Jerubbaal, which are threescore and ten persons, reign over you, or that one reign over you? remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.

“Please speak in the ears of all the men of Shechem, ‘Is it better for you that all the sons of Jerubbaal, who are seventy persons, rule over you, or that one rule over you?’ Remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.”

Los tíos de Abimélec fueron ante las autoridades de la ciudad y propusieron el plan. Puesto que su madre era de aquella ciudad, decidieron aceptarlo.

Y hablaron por él los hermanos de su madre á oídos de todos los de Sichêm todas estas palabras: y el corazón de ellos se inclinó en favor de Abimelech, porque decían: Nuestro hermano es.

And his mother’s brethren spake of him in the ears of all the men of Shechem all these words: and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech; for they said, He is our brother.

Le dieron a Abimélec setenta monedas de plata de las ofrendas del templo de Baal Berit, y con ellas contrató a un grupo de vagabundos y ociosos, que aceptaron hacer cualquier cosa que él les dijera.

Y diéronle setenta siclos de plata del templo de Baal-berith, con los cuales Abimelech alquiló hombres ociosos y vagabundos, que le siguieron.

And they gave him threescore and ten pieces of silver out of the house of Baal-berith, wherewith Abimelech hired vain and light persons, which followed him.

Los llevó hasta la casa de su padre en Ofra, y allí sobre una piedra, dieron muerte a sus setenta medio hermanos, salvo a Jotán, el menor, que escapó y se escondió.

Y viniendo á la casa de su padre en Ophra, mató á sus hermanos los hijos de Jerobaal, setenta varones, sobre una piedra: mas quedó Jotham, el más pequeño hijo de Jerobaal, que se escondió.

And he went unto his father’s house at Ophrah, and slew his brethren the sons of Jerubbaal, being threescore and ten persons, upon one stone: notwithstanding yet Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left; for he hid himself.

He went to his father’s house at Ophrah, and killed his brothers the sons of Jerubbaal, being seventy persons, on one stone; but Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left, for he hid himself.

Entonces los ciudadanos de Siquén y de Bet Miló convocaron una reunión bajo la encina junto a Siquén y Abimélec fue proclamado rey de Israel.

Y reunidos todos los de Sichêm con toda la casa de Millo, fueron y eligieron á Abimelech por rey, cerca de la llanura del pilar que estaba en Sichêm.

And all the men of Shechem gathered together, and all the house of Millo, and went, and made Abimelech king, by the plain of the pillar that was in Shechem.

Cuando Jotán oyó esto, se paró sobre el monte Guerizín y gritó para que lo oyeran los hombres de Siquén: «Si les interesa la bendición de Dios, escúchenme.

Y como se lo dijesen á Jotham, fué y púsose en la cumbre del monte de Gerizim, y alzando su voz clamó, y díjoles: Oidme, varones de Sichêm; que Dios os oiga.

And when they told it to Jotham, he went and stood in the top of mount Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and cried, and said unto them, Hearken unto me, ye men of Shechem, that God may hearken unto you.

pero este se negó. “¿Debo dejar de producir el aceite que Dios y el hombre bendicen sólo para ser grande entre los árboles?”, preguntó.

Mas la oliva respondió: ¿Tengo de dejar mi pingüe jugo, con el que por mi causa Dios y los hombres son honrados, por ir á ser grande sobre los árboles?

But the olive tree said unto them, Should I leave my fatness, wherewith by me they honour God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?

“But the olive tree said to them, ‘Should I stop producing my oil, with which they honor God and man by me, and go to wave back and forth over the trees?’

»Entonces fueron y hablaron con la higuera: “Sé nuestro rey”.

Y dijeron los árboles á la higuera: Anda tú, reina sobre nosotros.

And the trees said to the fig tree, Come thou, and reign over us.

“The trees said to the fig tree, ‘Come and reign over us.’

Pero la higuera también se negó. “¿Debo dejar de producir dulzura y fruta sólo para elevar mi cabeza sobre los demás árboles?”.

Y respondió la higuera: ¿Tengo de dejar mi dulzura y mi buen fruto, por ir á ser grande sobre los árboles?

But the fig tree said unto them, Should I forsake my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to be promoted over the trees?

“But the fig tree said to them, ‘Should I leave my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to wave back and forth over the trees?’

»Entonces hablaron con la vid: “Reina sobre nosotros”.

Dijeron luego los árboles á la vid: Pues ven tú, reina sobre nosotros.

Then said the trees unto the vine, Come thou, and reign over us.

“The trees said to the vine, ‘Come and reign over us.’

Pero la vid respondió: “¿Dejaré de producir el vino que alegra a Dios y a los hombres para ser poderosa entre los árboles?”.

Y la vid les respondió: ¿Tengo de dejar mi mosto, que alegra á Dios y á los hombres, por ir á ser grande sobre los árboles?

And the vine said unto them, Should I leave my wine, which cheereth God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?

“The vine said to them, ‘Should I leave my new wine, which cheers God and man, and go to wave back and forth over the trees?’

»Finalmente todos los árboles se dirigieron a la zarza: “Sé nuestro rey”, dijeron.

Dijeron entonces todos los árboles al escaramujo: Anda tú, reina sobre nosotros.

Then said all the trees unto the bramble, Come thou, and reign over us.

“Then all the trees said to the bramble, ‘Come and reign over us.’

Pero la zarza replicó: “Si realmente me quieren, vengan y humíllense bajo mi sombra. Si se niegan, que salga fuego de mí y consuma a los grandes cedros del Líbano”.

Y el escaramujo respondió á los árboles: Si en verdad me elegís por rey sobre vosotros, venid, y aseguraos debajo de mi sombra: y si no, fuego salga del escaramujo que devore los cedros del Líbano.

And the bramble said unto the trees, If in truth ye anoint me king over you, then come and put your trust in my shadow: and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.

“The bramble said to the trees, ‘If in truth you anoint me king over you, then come and take refuge in my shade; and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.’

»Ahora, pues, ¿están seguros de que han hecho bien al elegir rey a Abimélec? ¿Creen que han hecho justicia a Gedeón y a sus descendientes?

Ahora pues, si con verdad y con integridad habéis procedido en hacer rey á Abimelech, y si lo habéis hecho bien con Jerobaal y con su casa, y si le habéis pagado conforme á la obra de sus manos;

Now therefore, if ye have done truly and sincerely, in that ye have made Abimelech king, and if ye have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done unto him according to the deserving of his hands;

“Now therefore, if you have dealt truly and righteously, in that you have made Abimelech king, and if you have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done to him according to the deserving of his hands

Mi padre peleó por ustedes y expuso su vida, y los salvó de los madianitas.

(Pues que mi padre peleó por vosotros, y echó lejos su vida por libraros de mano de Madián;

(For my father fought for you, and adventured his life far, and delivered you out of the hand of Midian:

Sin embargo, se han rebelado contra él y mataron a sus setenta hijos sobre una piedra, ¡ahora han elegido rey a Abimélec, el hijo de la esclava, solamente porque es pariente de ustedes!

Y vosotros os levantasteis hoy contra la casa de mi padre, y matasteis sus hijos, setenta varones, sobre una piedra; y habéis puesto por rey sobre los de Sichêm á Abimelech, hijo de su criada, por cuanto es vuestro hermano:)

And ye are risen up against my father’s house this day, and have slain his sons, threescore and ten persons, upon one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his maidservant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your brother;)

¿Están seguros de que han hecho justicia a Gedeón y a sus descendientes? Si es así, que Abimélec y ustedes tengan una vida larga y feliz.

Si con verdad y con integridad habéis obrado hoy con Jerobaal y con su casa, que gocéis de Abimelech, y él goce de vosotros.

If ye then have dealt truly and sincerely with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then rejoice ye in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you:

if you then have dealt truly and righteously with Jerubbaal and with his house today, then rejoice in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you;

Pero si no han sido justos con Gedeón, que Abimélec destruya a los ciudadanos de Siquén y Bet Miló y que ellos destruyan a Abimélec».

Y si no, fuego salga de Abimelech, que consuma á los de Sichêm y á la casa de Millo; y fuego salga de los de Sichêm y de la casa de Millo, que consuma á Abimelech.

But if not, let fire come out from Abimelech, and devour the men of Shechem, and the house of Millo; and let fire come out from the men of Shechem, and from the house of Millo, and devour Abimelech.

Entonces Jotán huyó y vivió en Ber por temor de su hermano Abimélec.

Y huyó Jotham, y se fugó, y fuése á Beer, y allí se estuvo por causa de Abimelech su hermano.

And Jotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and dwelt there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.

Tres años más tarde, Dios hizo que surgieran problemas entre Abimélec y los ciudadanos de Siquén, y estos se rebelaron.

Y después que Abimelech hubo dominado sobre Israel tres años,

Envió Dios un espíritu malo entre Abimelech y los hombres de Sichêm: que los de Sichêm se levantaron contra Abimelech:

En los hechos que ocurrieron como consecuencia, Abimélec y los ciudadanos que le ayudaron a dar muerte a los setenta hijos de Gedeón recibieron el justo castigo por estos crímenes.

Para que el agravio de los setenta hijos de Jerobaal, y la sangre de ellos, viniera á ponerse sobre Abimelech su hermano que los mató, y sobre los hombres de Sichêm que corroboraron las manos de él para matar á sus hermanos.

That the cruelty done to the threescore and ten sons of Jerubbaal might come, and their blood be laid upon Abimelech their brother, which slew them; and upon the men of Shechem, which aided him in the killing of his brethren.

that the violence done to the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might come, and that their blood might be laid on Abimelech their brother who killed them, and on the men of Shechem who strengthened his hands to kill his brothers.

Los hombres de Siquén pusieron emboscada contra Abimélec en el camino que va hacia la cumbre de la montaña mientras esperaban que él llegara, asaltaban a cualquiera que pasara por allí. Pero alguien advirtió a Abimélec acerca de este complot.

Y pusiéronle los de Sichêm asechadores en las cumbres de los montes, los cuales salteaban á todos los que pasaban junto á ellos por el camino; de lo que fué dado aviso á Abimelech.

And the men of Shechem set liers in wait for him in the top of the mountains, and they robbed all that came along that way by them: and it was told Abimelech.

En eso Gaal, hijo de Ébed, se mudó a Siquén con sus hermanos y la gente puso en él su confianza

a tal grado que salieron a vendimiar sus viñas. Luego pisaron las uvas y celebraron la fiesta de la cosecha en el templo de un dios local. El vino corría libremente y todos empezaron a maldecir a Abimélec.

Y saliendo al campo, vendimiaron sus viñas, y pisaron la uva, é hicieron alegrías; y entrando en el templo de sus dioses, comieron y bebieron, y maldijeron á Abimelech.

And they went out into the fields, and gathered their vineyards, and trode the grapes, and made merry, and went into the house of their god, and did eat and drink, and cursed Abimelech.

Y Gaal hijo de Ebed dijo: ¿Quién es Abimelech y qué es Sichêm, para que nosotros á él sirvamos? ¿no es hijo de Jerobaal? ¿y no es Zebul su asistente? Servid á los varones de Hemor padre de Sichêm: mas ¿por qué habíamos de servir á él?

And Gaal the son of Ebed said, Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? is not he the son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his officer? serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem: for why should we serve him?

Corónenme rey y verán lo que ocurre a Abimélec. Le diré a Abimélec: “Toma tu ejército y peleemos”».

Fuérame dado este pueblo bajo de mi mano, yo echaría luego á Abimelech. Y decía á Abimelech: Aumenta tus escuadrones, y sal.

And would to God this people were under my hand! then would I remove Abimelech. And he said to Abimelech, Increase thine army, and come out.

I wish that this people were under my hand! Then I would remove Abimelech.” He said to Abimelech, “Increase your army and come out!”

Cuando Zebul, el gobernante de la ciudad, oyó lo que decía Gaal, se enfureció,

y envió mensajeros a Abimélec en Arumá diciéndole: «Gaal, hijo de Ébed, y sus parientes han venido a vivir en Siquén y ahora están incitando a la ciudad para que se rebele en tu contra.

Y envió sagazmente mensajeros á Abimelech, diciendo: He aquí que Gaal hijo de Ebed y sus hermanos han venido á Sichêm, y he aquí, que han cercado la ciudad contra ti.

And he sent messengers unto Abimelech privily, saying, Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his brethren be come to Shechem; and, behold, they fortify the city against thee.

He sent messengers to Abimelech craftily, saying, “Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his brothers have come to Shechem; and behold, they incite the city against you.

Ven esta noche con la gente que está contigo y escóndete en los campos,

Now therefore up by night, thou and the people that is with thee, and lie in wait in the field:

y en la mañana, en cuanto haya aclarado, ataca a la ciudad. Cuando él y los que están con él salgan en contra tuya, podrás hacer con ellos lo que quieras».

Y por la mañana al salir del sol te levantarás y acometerás la ciudad: y él y el pueblo que está con él saldrán contra ti, y tu harás con él según que se te ofrecerá.

And it shall be, that in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, thou shalt rise early, and set upon the city: and, behold, when he and the people that is with him come out against thee, then mayest thou do to them as thou shalt find occasion.

Abimélec y sus hombres se pusieron en marcha durante la noche y se dividieron en cuatro grupos, que se distribuyeron alrededor de la ciudad.

Levantándose pues de noche Abimelech y todo el pueblo que con él estaba, pusieron emboscada contra Sichêm con cuatro compañías.

And Abimelech rose up, and all the people that were with him, by night, and they laid wait against Shechem in four companies.

Cuando Gaal los vio, dijo a Zebul: ―Mira a la montaña, ¿no es gente que viene descendiendo? ―No —dijo Zebul—. Estás viendo sombras que parecen hombres.

Y viendo Gaal el pueblo, dijo á Zebul: He allí pueblo que desciende de las cumbres de los montes. Y Zebul le respondió: La sombra de los montes te parece hombres.

And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, Behold, there come people down from the top of the mountains. And Zebul said unto him, Thou seest the shadow of the mountains as if they were men.

When Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, “Behold, people are coming down from the tops of the mountains.” Zebul said to him, “You see the shadows of the mountains as if they were men.”

―No —dijo Gaal—; estoy seguro que veo gente que se dirige hacia nosotros por la colina Ombligo de la Tierra; y mira, hay otros que vienen por la Encina de los Adivinos.

Mas Gaal tornó á hablar, y dijo: He allí pueblo que desciende por medio de la tierra, y un escuadrón viene camino de la campiña de Meonenim.

And Gaal spake again and said, See there come people down by the middle of the land, and another company come along by the plain of Meonenim.

Entonces Zebul se volvió triunfante hacia él: ―Ahora, dime, ¿qué es lo que habías dicho? ¿Quién era el que decía “¿Quién es Abimélec y por qué debe ser nuestro rey?”. Los hombres que insultaste y maldijiste están ahora a las afueras de la ciudad.

Y Zebul le respondió: ¿Dónde está ahora aquel tu hablar, diciendo: Quién es Abimelech para que le sirvamos? ¿No es este el pueblo que tenías en poco? Sal pues ahora, y pelea con él.

Then said Zebul unto him, Where is now thy mouth, wherewith thou saidst, Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him? is not this the people that thou hast despised? go out, I pray now, and fight with them.

Then Zebul said to him, “Now where is your mouth, that you said, ‘Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him?’ Isn’t this the people that you have despised? Please go out now and fight with them.”

Gaal salió al frente de los hombres de Siquén para ofrecer batalla a Abimélec,

And Abimelech dwelt at Arumah: and Zebul thrust out Gaal and his brethren, that they should not dwell in Shechem.

Al día siguiente, los hombres de Siquén salieron nuevamente a la batalla. Sin embargo, alguien le había revelado a Abimélec los planes,

And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people went out into the field; and they told Abimelech.

El cual, tomando gente, repartióla en tres compañías, y puso emboscadas en el campo: y como miró, he aquí el pueblo que salía de la ciudad; y levantóse contra ellos, é hiriólos:

And he took the people, and divided them into three companies, and laid wait in the field, and looked, and, behold, the people were come forth out of the city; and he rose up against them, and smote them.

Abimélec y sus acompañantes se apoderaron de la entrada de la ciudad para impedir que los hombres de Siquén regresaran, mientras que los otros grupos atacaban en los campos.

Pues Abimelech y el escuadrón que estaba con él, acometieron con ímpetu, y pararon á la entrada de la puerta de la ciudad; y las dos compañías acometieron á todos los que estaban en el campo, y los hirieron.

And Abimelech, and the company that was with him, rushed forward, and stood in the entering of the gate of the city: and the two other companies ran upon all the people that were in the fields, and slew them.

La batalla siguió durante todo el día hasta que al fin Abimélec capturó la ciudad, y dio muerte a sus habitantes y la destruyó.

Entonces cada uno de ellos cortó leña y la llevó hasta el pueblo donde, siguiendo el ejemplo de Abimélec, la colocaron contra las murallas de la fortaleza y le prendieron fuego. Toda la gente murió adentro, unas mil personas entre hombres y mujeres.

Y así todo el pueblo cortó también cada uno su rama, y siguieron á Abimelech, y pusiéronlas junto á la fortaleza, y prendieron fuego con ellas á la fortaleza: por manera que todos los de la torre de Sichêm murieron, como unos mil hombres y mujeres.

Así castigó Dios a Abimélec y a los hombres de Siquén por el pecado de haber asesinado a los setenta hijos de Gedeón, y se cumplió la maldición de Jotán, hijo de Gedeón.

Así pues pagó Dios á Abimelech el mal que hizo contra su padre matando á sus setenta hermanos.
