Por este tiempo Abimelec, hijo de Jerobaal, se fue a Siquem a los hermanos de su madre, y trató con ellos y con toda la parentela de la casa del padre de su madre, diciendo:
Y FUÉSE Abimelech hijo de Jerobaal á Sichêm, á los hermanos de su madre, y habló con ellos, y con toda la familia de la casa del padre de su madre, diciendo:

Proponed a todos los ciudadanos de Siquem: ¿Qué es lo que os parece mejor: que os dominen setenta hombres hijos todos de Jerobaal, o que uno solo sea el Señor? Y considerad al mismo tiempo que yo soy carne y sangre vuestra.
Yo os ruego que habléis á oídos de todos los de Sichêm: ¿Qué tenéis por mejor, que os señoreen setenta hombres, todos los hijos de Jerobaal; ó que os señoree un varón? Acordaos que yo soy hueso vuestro, y carne vuestra.
Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of Shechem, Whether is better for you, either that all the sons of Jerubbaal, which are threescore and ten persons, reign over you, or that one reign over you? remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.
“Please speak in the ears of all the men of Shechem, ‘Is it better for you that all the sons of Jerubbaal, who are seventy persons, rule over you, or that one rule over you?’ Remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.”
Propusieron, pues, los hermanos de su madre todas estas razones a todos los ciudadanos de Siquem, e inclinaron su corazón a favor de Abimelec, diciendo: El es nuestro hermano.
Y hablaron por él los hermanos de su madre á oídos de todos los de Sichêm todas estas palabras: y el corazón de ellos se inclinó en favor de Abimelech, porque decían: Nuestro hermano es.

And all the men of Shechem gathered together, and all the house of Millo, and went, and made Abimelech king, by the plain of the pillar that was in Shechem.

Lo cual entendido por Joatam, subió al monte de Garizim, y puesto sobre la cumbre, clamó a voz en grito, y dijo: Ciudadanos de Siquem, oídme; así os oiga Dios;

Se dirigieron después los árboles a la vid, diciendo: ven y reina sobre nosotros.

La cual respondió: Si es que con verdad y buena fe me constituís por reina vuestra, venid y reposad a mi sombra: y si no, salga fuego de la zarza y ábrase los cedros del Líbano.
Y el escaramujo respondió á los árboles: Si en verdad me elegís por rey sobre vosotros, venid, y aseguraos debajo de mi sombra: y si no, fuego salga del escaramujo que devore los cedros del Líbano.
And the bramble said unto the trees, If in truth ye anoint me king over you, then come and put your trust in my shadow: and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.
“The bramble said to the trees, ‘If in truth you anoint me king over you, then come and take refuge in my shade; and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.’
Ahora, pues, considerad si habéis hecho una acción justa e inocente, en constituir por rey vuestro a Abimelec; si os habéis portado bien con Jerobaal y su casa, correspondiendo a los beneficios de aquel que combatió por vosotros,
Ahora pues, si con verdad y con integridad habéis procedido en hacer rey á Abimelech, y si lo habéis hecho bien con Jerobaal y con su casa, y si le habéis pagado conforme á la obra de sus manos;

y expuso su vida a los peligros por libertaros del poder de los madianitas,
(Pues que mi padre peleó por vosotros, y echó lejos su vida por libraros de mano de Madián;
(For my father fought for you, and adventured his life far, and delivered you out of the hand of Midian:

vosotros que ahora os habéis alzado contra la casa de mi padre, y degollado a sus hijos, setenta personas sobre una misma piedra, y constituido por rey sobre los habitantes de Siquem a Abimelec, hijo de una esclava suya, porque es vuestro hermano;

si os habéis, pues, portado con justicia y sin pecado con Jerobaal y su casa, regocijaos hoy con Abimelec, y regocíjese Abimelec con vosotros.
Si con verdad y con integridad habéis obrado hoy con Jerobaal y con su casa, que gocéis de Abimelech, y él goce de vosotros.
If ye then have dealt truly and sincerely with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then rejoice ye in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you:

Mas si habéis obrado perversamente, salga fuego de Abimelec, y devore a los vecinos de Siquem y la ciudad de Mello; salga igualmente fuego de los vecinos de Siquem y de la ciudad de Mello; que devore a Abimelec.
Y si no, fuego salga de Abimelech, que consuma á los de Sichêm y á la casa de Millo; y fuego salga de los de Sichêm y de la casa de Millo, que consuma á Abimelech.

Dicho esto, huyó, y se fue a Bera, donde habitó por temor de su hermano Abimelec.

Para que el agravio de los setenta hijos de Jerobaal, y la sangre de ellos, viniera á ponerse sobre Abimelech su hermano que los mató, y sobre los hombres de Sichêm que corroboraron las manos de él para matar á sus hermanos.
That the cruelty done to the threescore and ten sons of Jerubbaal might come, and their blood be laid upon Abimelech their brother, which slew them; and upon the men of Shechem, which aided him in the killing of his brethren.

Y Gaal hijo de Ebed dijo: ¿Quién es Abimelech y qué es Sichêm, para que nosotros á él sirvamos? ¿no es hijo de Jerobaal? ¿y no es Zebul su asistente? Servid á los varones de Hemor padre de Sichêm: mas ¿por qué habíamos de servir á él?
And Gaal the son of Ebed said, Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? is not he the son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his officer? serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem: for why should we serve him?

¡Ojalá me diese alguno el mando de este pueblo, para quitar de en medio a Abimelec! Entretanto se avisó a Abimelec, para que juntase un ejército numeroso y viniese.
Fuérame dado este pueblo bajo de mi mano, yo echaría luego á Abimelech. Y decía á Abimelech: Aumenta tus escuadrones, y sal.

And it shall be, that in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, thou shalt rise early, and set upon the city: and, behold, when he and the people that is with him come out against thee, then mayest thou do to them as thou shalt find occasion.

Abimelec, pues, marchó de noche con todo su ejército, y puso emboscadas en cuatro partes junto a Siquem.

Pues Abimelech y el escuadrón que estaba con él, acometieron con ímpetu, y pararon á la entrada de la puerta de la ciudad; y las dos compañías acometieron á todos los que estaban en el campo, y los hirieron.
And Abimelech, and the company that was with him, rushed forward, and stood in the entering of the gate of the city: and the two other companies ran upon all the people that were in the fields, and slew them.

Como hubiesen oído esto los que moraban en la torre de Siquem, se retiraron al templo de su dios Berit, en donde habían hecho alianza con Abimelec, y de lo cual le venía al lugar aquel nombre de Berit: lugar que estaba muy fortificado.

Y así todo el pueblo cortó también cada uno su rama, y siguieron á Abimelech, y pusiéronlas junto á la fortaleza, y prendieron fuego con ellas á la fortaleza: por manera que todos los de la torre de Sichêm murieron, como unos mil hombres y mujeres.

Entonces Abimelec, llamando a toda prisa a su escudero, le dijo: Saca tu espada, y mátame; porque no se diga que fui muerto por una mujer. El escudero, ejecutando el mandato, lo acabó de matar.

Y muerto que fue, todos los israelitas que le seguían se volvieron a sus casas.

And all the evil of the men of Shechem did God render upon their heads: and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.
