Jeremías 14

1Este mensaje del Señor le vino a Jeremías como explicación de la sequía que había llegado.
2Judá llora, los negocios están paralizados, todo el mundo se postra en tierra y hay gran aflicción en Jerusalén.
3Los nobles envían empleados a los pozos en busca de agua, pero los encuentran secos. Contrariados y desesperados, regresan los empleados y en señal de desesperación se cubren la cabeza, como es la costumbre.
4La tierra está reseca y agrietada por falta de lluvia; los granjeros están temerosos por la reseca, y también ellos se cubren la cabeza.
5Hasta la venada abandona su cría recién parida porque no hay hierba.
6Jadeando como chacales del desierto están los burros monteses en las colinas desnudas; les duelen los ojos buscando hierba que comer, pero no encuentran nada.
7¡Oh Señor, contra ti hemos cometido faltas gravísimas, pero ayúdanos por amor a tu propia magnífica fama!
8Oh Esperanza de Israel, Salvador nuestro en tiempos de aflicción, ¿por qué nos tratas como si fueras un extraño, como forastero de paso que sólo se detiene una noche, indiferente a lo que pasa?
9¿No tienes poder para salvarnos? ¡Oh Señor, tú estás aquí en nuestro medio, y nosotros nos identificamos con tu nombre, como pueblo tuyo se nos conoce! ¡Oh Señor, no nos abandones ahora!
10Pero el Señor responde: Se complacieron en alejarse de mí y no han procurado seguir las sendas que les señalé. Ahora ya no los aceptaré como pueblo mío, ahora recordaré todo el mal que han hecho, y castigaré sus pecados.
11El Señor me dijo de nuevo: No me pidas más que bendiga a este pueblo, no ores más por ellos.
12Cuando ayunen, no pondré atención; cuando me presenten sus ofrendas y sacrificios, no los aceptaré. Lo que les daré como respuesta será guerra, hambre y enfermedad.
13Entonces dije yo: ¡Oh Señor Dios, sus profetas les dicen que todo anda bien, que no habrá ni guerra ni hambre; le dicen al pueblo que tú sin duda les enviarás paz, que tú los bendecirás!
14Entonces el Señor dijo: ¡Pues falso es todo eso que andan diciendo! ¡Profetizan falsamente como si yo los hubiera enviado! Yo no los envié ni les ordené hablar ni les di mensaje alguno. Profetizan de visiones y revelaciones que jamás vieron ni oyeron, proclaman necedades inventadas en su mentiroso corazón.
15Por lo tanto, dice el Señor, yo castigaré a estos profetas mentirosos que han hablado como si yo los hubiera enviado, y dicen que no habrá guerra ni hambre. ¡Ellos serán las primeras víctimas del hambre y la guerra!
16Y en cuanto al pueblo a quien profetizan, les aseguro que sus cuerpos serán arrojados por las calles de Jerusalén, víctimas del hambre y la guerra; y no habrá siquiera quien los sepulte. Esposos, esposas, hijos e hijas: todos desaparecerán. ¡Sobre todos ellos derramaré un terrible castigo por sus graves delitos!
17Por tanto, diles esto: Día y noche lloraré amargamente; no puedo dejar de llorar porque mi pueblo ha sido traspasado por la espada de los enemigos y ahora yace en tierra mortalmente herido.
18Si salgo a los campos, allí están los cuerpos de los muertos caídos por las heridas de las espadas enemigas; y si ando por las calles, allí están tirados los muertos que causaron el hambre y la enfermedad. Y sin embargo, los profetas y sacerdotes por igual se encargaron de viajar por todo el país afirmando a diestra y siniestra de que todo andaba bien, hablando de cosas que ignoraban por completo.
19«¡Oh Señor!», clamará el pueblo, «¿has rechazado por completo a Judá? ¿Aborreces a Jerusalén? ¿Tendremos de nuevo paz cuando pase el castigo? Nosotros pensábamos: Ahora por fin el Señor nos sanará y vendará nuestras heridas. Pero la paz no llegó y sólo reinan por todos lados la desesperación y el terror.
20»¡Oh Señor, confesamos nuestra gran maldad y también la de nuestros antepasados!
21¡No nos detestes, Señor, por amor de tu gran fama! ¡No te deshonres a ti y el sitio maravilloso donde habitas, rompiendo la promesa de bendecirnos!
22¿Qué dios pagano puede darnos lluvia? ¿Quién sino tú, oh Señor Dios nuestro, puede hacer cosas así? Por tanto, de ti esperaremos auxilio».

1PALABRA de Jehová que fué á Jeremías, con motivo de la sequía.
2Enlutóse Judá, y sus puertas se despoblaron: oscureciéronse en tierra, y subió el clamor de Jerusalem.
3Y los principales de ellos enviaron sus criados al agua: vinieron á las lagunas, y no hallaron agua: volviéronse con sus vasos vacíos; se avergonzaron, confundiéronse, y cubrieron sus cabezas.
4Porque se resquebrajó la tierra á causa de no llover en el país; confusos los labradores, cubrieron sus cabezas.
5Y aun las ciervas en los campos parían, y dejaban la cría, porque no había hierba.
6Y los asnos monteses se ponían en los altos, aspiraban el viento como los chacales; sus ojos se ofuscaron, porque no había hierba.
7Si nuestras iniquidades testifican contra nosotros, oh Jehová, haz por amor de tu nombre; porque nuestras rebeliones se han multiplicado, contra ti pecamos.
8Oh esperanza de Israel, Guardador suyo en el tiempo de la aflicción, ¿por qué has de ser como peregrino en la tierra, y como caminante que se aparta para tener la noche?
9¿Por qué has de ser como hombre atónito, y como valiente que no puede librar? tú empero estás entre nosotros, oh Jehová, y sobre nosotros es invocado tu nombre; no nos desampares.
10Así ha dicho Jehová á este pueblo: Así amaron moverse, ni detuvieron sus pies: por tanto, Jehová no los tiene en voluntad; acordaráse ahora de la maldad de ellos, y visitará sus pecados.
11Y díjome Jehová: No ruegues por este pueblo para bien.
12Cuando ayunaren, yo no oiré su clamor, y cuando ofrecieren holocausto y ofrenda, no lo aceptaré; antes los consumiré con cuchillo, y con hambre, y con pestilencia.
13Y yo dije: ¡Ah! ah! Señor Jehová! he aquí que los profetas les dicen: No veréis cuchillo, ni habrá hambre en vosotros, sino que en este lugar os daré paz verdadera.
14Díjome entonces Jehová: Falso profetizan los profetas en mi nombre: no los envié, ni les mandé, ni les hablé: visión mentirosa, y adivinación, y vanidad, y engaño de su corazón os profetizan.
15Por tanto así ha dicho Jehová sobre los profetas que profetizan en mi nombre, los cuales yo no envié, y que dicen, Cuchillo ni hambre no habrá en esta tierra: Con cuchillo y con hambre serán consumidos esos profetas.
16Y el pueblo á quien profetizan, echado será en las calles de Jerusalem por hambre y por espada; y no habrá quien los entierre, ellos, y sus mujeres, y sus hijos, y sus hijas; y sobre ellos derramaré su maldad.
17Decirles has, pues, esta palabra: Córranse mis ojos en lágrimas noche y día, y no cesen; porque de gran quebrantamiento es quebrantada la virgen hija de mi pueblo, de plaga muy recia.
18Si salgo al campo, he aquí muertos á cuchillo; y si me entro en la ciudad, he aquí enfermos de hambre: porque también el profeta como el sacerdote anduvieron rodeando en la tierra, y no conocieron.
19¿Has desechado enteramente á Judá? ¿ha aborrecido tu alma á Sión? ¿Por qué nos hiciste herir sin que nos quede cura? Esperamos paz, y no hubo bien; tiempo de cura, y he aquí turbación.
20Reconocemos, oh Jehová, nuestra impiedad, la iniquidad de nuestros padres: porque contra ti hemos pecado.
21Por amor de tu nombre no nos deseches, ni trastornes el trono de tu gloria: acuérdate, no invalides tu pacto con nosotros.
22¿Hay entre las vanidades de las gentes quien haga llover? ¿y darán los cielos lluvias? ¿No eres tú, Jehová, nuestro Dios? en ti pues esperamos; pues tú hiciste todas estas cosas.

1The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah concerning the dearth.
2Judah mourneth, and the gates thereof languish; they are black unto the ground; and the cry of Jerusalem is gone up.
3And their nobles have sent their little ones to the waters: they came to the pits, and found no water; they returned with their vessels empty; they were ashamed and confounded, and covered their heads.
4Because the ground is chapt, for there was no rain in the earth, the plowmen were ashamed, they covered their heads.
5Yea, the hind also calved in the field, and forsook it, because there was no grass.
6And the wild asses did stand in the high places, they snuffed up the wind like dragons; their eyes did fail, because there was no grass.
7O LORD, though our iniquities testify against us, do thou it for thy name’s sake: for our backslidings are many; we have sinned against thee.
8O the hope of Israel, the saviour thereof in time of trouble, why shouldest thou be as a stranger in the land, and as a wayfaring man that turneth aside to tarry for a night?
9Why shouldest thou be as a man astonied, as a mighty man that cannot save? yet thou, O LORD, art in the midst of us, and we are called by thy name; leave us not.
10Thus saith the LORD unto this people, Thus have they loved to wander, they have not refrained their feet, therefore the LORD doth not accept them; he will now remember their iniquity, and visit their sins.
11Then said the LORD unto me, Pray not for this people for their good.
12When they fast, I will not hear their cry; and when they offer burnt offering and an oblation, I will not accept them: but I will consume them by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence.
13Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! behold, the prophets say unto them, Ye shall not see the sword, neither shall ye have famine; but I will give you assured peace in this place.
14Then the LORD said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart.
15Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the prophets that prophesy in my name, and I sent them not, yet they say, Sword and famine shall not be in this land; By sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed.
16And the people to whom they prophesy shall be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword; and they shall have none to bury them, them, their wives, nor their sons, nor their daughters: for I will pour their wickedness upon them.
17Therefore thou shalt say this word unto them; Let mine eyes run down with tears night and day, and let them not cease: for the virgin daughter of my people is broken with a great breach, with a very grievous blow.
18If I go forth into the field, then behold the slain with the sword! and if I enter into the city, then behold them that are sick with famine! yea, both the prophet and the priest go about into a land that they know not.
19Hast thou utterly rejected Judah? hath thy soul lothed Zion? why hast thou smitten us, and there is no healing for us? we looked for peace, and there is no good; and for the time of healing, and behold trouble!
20We acknowledge, O LORD, our wickedness, and the iniquity of our fathers: for we have sinned against thee.
21Do not abhor us, for thy name’s sake, do not disgrace the throne of thy glory: remember, break not thy covenant with us.
22Are there any among the vanities of the Gentiles that can cause rain? or can the heavens give showers? art not thou he, O LORD our God? therefore we will wait upon thee: for thou hast made all these things.

1This is the LORD’s word that came to Jeremiah concerning the drought:
2“Judah mourns, and its gates languish. They sit in black on the ground. The cry of Jerusalem goes up.
3Their nobles send their little ones to the waters. They come to the cisterns, and find no water. They return with their vessels empty. They are disappointed and confounded, and cover their heads.
4Because of the ground which is cracked, because no rain has been in the land, the plowmen are disappointed. They cover their heads.
5Yes, the doe in the field also calves and forsakes her young, because there is no grass.
6The wild donkeys stand on the bare heights. They pant for air like jackals. Their eyes fail, because there is no vegetation.
7Though our iniquities testify against us, work for your name’s sake, LORD; for our rebellions are many. We have sinned against you.
8You hope of Israel, its Savior in the time of trouble, why should you be as a foreigner in the land, and as a wayfaring man who turns aside to stay for a night?
9Why should you be like a scared man, as a mighty man who can’t save? Yet you, LORD, are in the middle of us, and we are called by your name. Don’t leave us.
10The LORD says to this people: “Even so they have loved to wander. They have not restrained their feet. Therefore the LORD does not accept them. Now he will remember their iniquity, and punish them for their sins.”
11The LORD said to me, “Don’t pray for this people for their good.
12When they fast, I will not hear their cry; and when they offer burnt offering and meal offering, I will not accept them; but I will consume them by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence.”
13Then I said, “Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, the prophets tell them, ‘You will not see the sword, neither will you have famine; but I will give you assured peace in this place.’”
14Then the LORD said to me, “The prophets prophesy lies in my name. I didn’t send them. I didn’t command them. I didn’t speak to them. They prophesy to you a lying vision, divination, and a thing of nothing, and the deceit of their own heart.
15Therefore the LORD says concerning the prophets who prophesy in my name, but I didn’t send them, yet they say, ‘Sword and famine will not be in this land.’ Those prophets will be consumed by sword and famine.
16The people to whom they prophesy will be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword. They will have no one to bury them—them, their wives, their sons, or their daughters, for I will pour their wickedness on them.
17“You shall say this word to them: “‘Let my eyes run down with tears night and day, and let them not cease; for the virgin daughter of my people is broken with a great breach, with a very grievous wound.
18If I go out into the field, then behold, the slain with the sword! If I enter into the city, then behold, those who are sick with famine! For both the prophet and the priest go about in the land, and have no knowledge.’”
19Have you utterly rejected Judah? Has your soul loathed Zion? Why have you struck us, and there is no healing for us? We looked for peace, but no good came; and for a time of healing, and behold, dismay!
20We acknowledge, LORD, our wickedness, and the iniquity of our fathers; for we have sinned against you.
21Do not abhor us, for your name’s sake. Do not disgrace the throne of your glory. Remember, and don’t break your covenant with us.
22Are there any among the vanities of the nations that can cause rain? Or can the sky give showers? Aren’t you he, the LORD our God? Therefore we will wait for you; for you have made all these things.
