1Me habló nuevamente el Señor y dijo:
2Ve y grita lo siguiente en las calles de Jerusalén: El Señor dice: Yo recuerdo que hace tiempo anhelaban agradarme como joven enamorada, ¡cómo me amaban y me seguían hasta por estériles desiertos!
3En aquellos días Israel era un pueblo santo, el primogénito de mis hijos. A todos los que lo perjudicaban se les culpaba gravemente, y eran castigados con mucha rigidez.
4Oh habitantes de Israel, dice el Señor, aclárenme lo siguiente: ¿Por qué me abandonaron sus padres? ¿Qué hallaron torcido en mí que los apartó de la forma de vida que les mostré y los convirtió en necios adoradores de ídolos?

6Ellos pasan por alto que fui yo, el Señor, quien los sacó con seguridad de Egipto y los condujo por estériles desiertos, por arenales rocosos donde reina la sed y la muerte, que nadie habita y ni siquiera transita.
7Yo los traje a tierra fructífera para que disfrutaran de su abundancia y frescura, pero ellos la convirtieron en tierra de maldad y corrupción y transformaron mi heredad en porquería.
8Ni siquiera sus sacerdotes se preocuparon por mí, y sus jueces me echaron al olvido; sus dirigentes se volvieron contra mí, y sus profetas adoraron a Baal y derrocharon su tiempo en necedades.
9Por eso sigo en mi pleito contra ustedes, el cual continuaré incluso contra sus descendientes en los años venideros.
10Miren en torno y vean si pueden encontrar otra nación en cualquier parte del mundo que haya cambiado sus antiguos dioses por otros nuevos, aunque sus dioses nada sean. Envíen a occidente, a la isla de Chipre; envíen al oriente, a los desiertos de Cedar; vean si hay allí alguien que jamás haya oído algo tan extraño. ¡Sólo mi pueblo ha renunciado a su glorioso Dios a cambio de ídolos ridículos!

12¡El cielo se espanta de esa gran estupidez y retrocede horrorizado y consternado!, dice el Señor.
13Porque dos males ha cometido mi pueblo: me abandonaron a mí que soy fuente de agua viva, y han cavado para sí cisternas que no pueden ni siquiera retener agua.
14¿Por qué se ha convertido Israel en nación de esclavos? ¿Por qué lo conquistan y lo llevan lejos? ¿Acaso nació para eso?
15Veo grandes ejércitos que marchan sobre Jerusalén entre grandes alaridos de guerra para destruirla y dejar en ruinas sus ciudades, incendiadas y desoladas. Le causaron tantos estragos como harían cachorros de león con sus juegos violentos.
16Hasta los habitantes de Menfis y Tafnes participaron en la humillación y desolación contra Israel.
17¿No se dan cuenta aún que ustedes se han acarreado esto al rebelarse contra el Señor su Dios cuando él quería guiarlos y mostrarles la forma correcta de vivir?
18¿Qué han ganado con sus alianzas con Egipto y Asiria?
19Su propia maldad será su castigo. Verán lo malo y amargo que es rebelarse contra el Señor su Dios, abandonándolo sin temor, dice el Señor, el Señor de los ejércitos.
20Desde hace mucho se desligaron de todo lo que los unía a mí. Desafiantes, no quisieron seguir mis instrucciones. Sobre cada colina y debajo de cada árbol se han postrado ante los ídolos.
21¿Cómo pudo ocurrir esto? ¿Cómo pudo ser? Porque cuando yo los planté, elegí cuidadosamente la semilla: era la mejor. ¿Por qué te has convertido en esta degenerada raza de malvados, como si procedieran de una malísima semilla?
22No hay en el mundo jabón ni detergente que puedan purificarte. Has cometido tantos delitos que son difíciles de olvidar. Los veo permanentemente ante mí, dice el Señor Dios.
23Pero tú dices que no es verdad, que no has adorado ídolos. ¿Cómo puedes decir tal cosa? ¡Ve y mira en cualquier valle del país todas las señales de tu ligereza e idolatría! ¡Toma nota de los muchos delitos que has cometido, oh camella inquieta en busca de macho!
24¡Eres como burra montés que olfatea el aire en época de celo! ¿Quién podrá refrenar tu lascivia? Ningún burro que te desee necesita buscarte, pues tú corres hacia él.
25¿Por qué no dejas al estéril correr tras otros dioses? Sabes que el Señor te provee para tus necesidades, pero tú dices: «No malgastes palabras. ¡Estoy enamorada de estos extranjeros y no puedo dejar de amarlos ahora!».
26Como el ladrón, la única vergüenza que Israel conoce es que lo atrapen. Reyes, príncipes, sacerdotes y profetas, en esto son iguales. A un poste labrado lo llaman padre suyo, y tienen por madre un ídolo labrado en piedra. ¡Pero cuando le llegan los tiempos de angustia es a mí a quien recurren pidiendo salvación!

28¿Por qué no imploran a los dioses que se han fabricado? Cuando sobrevenga el peligro, ¡que te ayuden ellos y te salven si pueden! Porque tienes tantos dioses como ciudades hay en Judá, incluso cada calle de Jerusalén tiene un altar dedicado a un ídolo diferente.
29No acudan más a mí, todos son rebeldes y me han echado pleito, dice el Señor.
30Castigué a sus hijos pero nada les aprovechó: aún no quieren obedecer. Y ustedes mismos han matado a mis profetas como el león que mata su presa.
31Oh pueblo mío, dime: ¿He sido acaso injusto con Israel? ¿He sido para ellos como tierra mala y egoísta? ¿Por qué entonces dice mi pueblo: «Por fin nos vemos libres de Dios, jamás volveremos a tener nada con él?».
32¿Cómo pueden desconocer así a su Dios? ¿Podrá una muchacha olvidar arreglarse linda? ¿Qué novia tratará de ocultar lo más lindo de su ajuar? ¡Pero por largos años mi pueblo se ha olvidado de mí, del más precioso de sus tesoros!
33¡Cuánto señuelo y qué artificios para atraer a tus amantes! ¡La coqueta más experta tendría mucho que aprender de ti!
34Tienes los vestidos manchados con la sangre de los inocentes y los pobres. Descaradamente matas sin causa.
35Y sin embargo dices: «¡Nada hice que enoje a Dios, estoy segura de que no está enojado!». Pero precisamente por decir «No he pecado» será que te castigaré duramente.
36Por aquí y por allá andas mariposeando de un aliado a otro en busca de socorro, pero de nada te valdrá pues tus nuevos amigos de Egipto te abandonarán como antes lo hizo Asiria.
37Quedarás desesperada y te cubrirás el rostro con las manos desesperada, porque el Señor ha rechazado a aquéllos en quienes confías. No triunfarás por más que te ayuden.

1Y FUÉ á mí palabra de Jehová, diciendo:
2Anda, y clama á los oídos de Jerusalem, diciendo: Así dice Jehová: Heme acordado de ti, de la misericordia de tu mocedad, del amor de tu desposorio, cuando andabas en pos de mí en el desierto, en tierra no sembrada.
3Santidad era Israel á Jehová, primicias de sus nuevos frutos. Todos los que le devoran pecarán; mal vendrá sobre ellos, dice Jehová.
4Oid la palabra de Jehová, casa de Jacob, y todas las familias de la casa de Israel.
5Así dijo Jehová: ¿Qué maldad hallaron en mí vuestros padres, que se alejaron de mí, y se fueron tras la vanidad, y tornáronse vanos?
6Y no dijeron: ¿Dónde está Jehová, que nos hizo subir de tierra de Egipto, que nos hizo andar por el desierto, por una tierra desierta y despoblada, por tierra seca y de sombra de muerte, por una tierra por la cual no pasó varón, ni allí habitó hombre?
7Y os metí en tierra de Carmelo, para que comieseis su fruto y su bien: mas entrasteis, y contaminasteis mi tierra, é hicisteis mi heredad abominable.
8Los sacerdotes no dijeron: ¿Dónde está Jehová? y los que tenían la ley no me conocieron; y los pastores se rebelaron contra mí, y los profetas profetizaron en Baal, y anduvieron tras lo que no aprovecha.
9Por tanto entraré aún en juicio con vosotros, dijo Jehová, y con los hijos de vuestros hijos pleitearé.
10Porque pasad á las islas de Chîttim y mirad; y enviad á Cedar, y considerad cuidadosamente, y ved si se ha hecho cosa semejante á ésta:
11Si alguna gente ha mudado sus dioses, bien que ellos no son dioses. Pero mi pueblo ha trocado su gloria por lo que no aprovecha.
12Espantaos, cielos, sobre esto, y horrorizaos; desolaos en gran manera, dijo Jehová.
13Porque dos males ha hecho mi pueblo: dejáronme á mí, fuente de agua viva, por cavar para sí cisternas, cisternas rotas que no detienen aguas.
14¿Es Israel siervo? ¿es esclavo? ¿por qué ha sido dado en presa?
15Los cachorros de los leones bramaron sobre él, dieron su voz; y pusieron su tierra en soledad; quemadas están sus ciudades, sin morador.
16Aun los hijos de Noph y de Taphnes te quebrantaron la mollera.
17¿No te acarreó esto tu dejar á Jehová tu Dios, cuando te hacía andar por camino?
18Ahora pues, ¿qué tienes tú en el camino de Egipto, para que bebas agua del Nilo? ¿y qué tienes tú en el camino de Asiria, para que bebas agua del río?
19Tu maldad te castigará, y tu apartamiento te condenará: sabe pues y ve cuán malo y amargo es tu dejar á Jehová tu Dios, y faltar mi temor en ti, dice el Señor Jehová de los ejércitos.
20Porque desde muy atrás he quebrado tu yugo, y roto tus ataduras; y dijiste: No serviré. Con todo eso, sobre todo collado alto y debajo de todo árbol umbroso, corrías tú, oh ramera.
21Y yo te planté de buen vidueño, simiente verdadera toda ella: ¿cómo pues te me has tornado sarmientos de vid extraña?
22Aunque te laves con lejía, y amontones jabón sobre ti, tu pecado está sellado delante de mí, dijo el Señor Jehová.
23¿Cómo dices: No soy inmunda, nunca anduve tras los Baales? Mira tu proceder en el valle, conoce lo que has hecho, dromedaria ligera que frecuentas sus carreras;
24Asna montés acostumbrada al desierto, que respira como quiere; ¿de su ocasión quién la detendrá? Todos los que la buscaren no se cansarán; hallaránla en su mes.
25Defiende tus pies de andar descalzos, y tu garganta de la sed. Mas dijiste: Hase perdido la esperanza; en ninguna manera: porque extraños he amado, y tras ellos tengo de ir.
26Como se avergüenza el ladrón cuando es tomado, así se avergonzarán la casa de Israel, ellos, sus reyes, sus príncipes, sus sacerdotes, y sus profetas;
27Que dicen al leño: Mi padre eres tú; y á la piedra: Tú me has engendrado: pues me volvieron la cerviz, y no el rostro; y en el tiempo de su trabajo dicen: Levántate, y líbranos.
28¿Y dónde están tus dioses que hiciste para ti? Levántense, á ver si te podrán librar en el tiempo de tu aflicción: porque según el número de tus ciudades, oh Judá, fueron tus dioses.
29¿Por qué porfías conmigo? Todos vosotros prevaricasteis contra mí, dice Jehová.
30Por demás he azotado vuestros hijos; no han recibido corrección. Cuchillo devoró vuestros profetas como león destrozador.
31¡Oh generación! ved vosotros la palabra de Jehová. ¿He sido yo á Israel soledad, ó tierra de tinieblas? ¿Por qué ha dicho mi pueblo: Señores somos; nunca más vendremos á ti?
32¿Olvídase la virgen de su atavío, ó la desposada de sus sartales? mas mi pueblo se ha olvidado de mí por días que no tienen número.
33¿Por qué abonas tu camino para hallar amor, pues aun á las malvadas enseñaste tus caminos?
34Aun en tus faldas se halló la sangre de las almas de los pobres, de los inocentes: no la hallé en excavación, sino en todas estas cosas.
35Y dices: Porque soy inocente, de cierto su ira se apartó de mí. He aquí yo entraré en juicio contigo, porque dijiste: No he pecado.
36¿Para qué discurres tanto, mudando tus caminos? También serás avergonzada de Egipto, como fuiste avergonzada de Asiria.
37También saldrás de él con tus manos sobre tu cabeza: porque Jehová deshechó tus confianzas, y en ellas no tendrás buen suceso.

1Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
2Go and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; I remember thee, the kindness of thy youth, the love of thine espousals, when thou wentest after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown.
3Israel was holiness unto the LORD, and the firstfruits of his increase: all that devour him shall offend; evil shall come upon them, saith the LORD.
4Hear ye the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel:
5Thus saith the LORD, What iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they are gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain?
6Neither said they, Where is the LORD that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, that led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drought, and of the shadow of death, through a land that no man passed through, and where no man dwelt?
7And I brought you into a plentiful country, to eat the fruit thereof and the goodness thereof; but when ye entered, ye defiled my land, and made mine heritage an abomination.
8The priests said not, Where is the LORD? and they that handle the law knew me not: the pastors also transgressed against me, and the prophets prophesied by Baal, and walked after things that do not profit.
9Wherefore I will yet plead with you, saith the LORD, and with your children’s children will I plead.
10For pass over the isles of Chittim, and see; and send unto Kedar, and consider diligently, and see if there be such a thing.
11Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? but my people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit.
12Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and be horribly afraid, be ye very desolate, saith the LORD.
13For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.
14Is Israel a servant? is he a homeborn slave? why is he spoiled?
15The young lions roared upon him, and yelled, and they made his land waste: his cities are burned without inhabitant.
16Also the children of Noph and Tahapanes have broken the crown of thy head.
17Hast thou not procured this unto thyself, in that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, when he led thee by the way?
18And now what hast thou to do in the way of Egypt, to drink the waters of Sihor? or what hast thou to do in the way of Assyria, to drink the waters of the river?
19Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and bitter, that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts.
20For of old time I have broken thy yoke, and burst thy bands; and thou saidst, I will not transgress; when upon every high hill and under every green tree thou wanderest, playing the harlot.
21Yet I had planted thee a noble vine, wholly a right seed: how then art thou turned into the degenerate plant of a strange vine unto me?
22For though thou wash thee with nitre, and take thee much soap, yet thine iniquity is marked before me, saith the Lord GOD.
23How canst thou say, I am not polluted, I have not gone after Baalim? see thy way in the valley, know what thou hast done: thou art a swift dromedary traversing her ways;
24A wild ass used to the wilderness, that snuffeth up the wind at her pleasure; in her occasion who can turn her away? all they that seek her will not weary themselves; in her month they shall find her.
25Withhold thy foot from being unshod, and thy throat from thirst: but thou saidst, There is no hope: no; for I have loved strangers, and after them will I go.
26As the thief is ashamed when he is found, so is the house of Israel ashamed; they, their kings, their princes, and their priests, and their prophets,
27Saying to a stock, Thou art my father; and to a stone, Thou hast brought me forth: for they have turned their back unto me, and not their face: but in the time of their trouble they will say, Arise, and save us.
28But where are thy gods that thou hast made thee? let them arise, if they can save thee in the time of thy trouble: for according to the number of thy cities are thy gods, O Judah.
29Wherefore will ye plead with me? ye all have transgressed against me, saith the LORD.
30In vain have I smitten your children; they received no correction: your own sword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion.
31O generation, see ye the word of the LORD. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel? a land of darkness? wherefore say my people, We are lords; we will come no more unto thee?
32Can a maid forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? yet my people have forgotten me days without number.
33Why trimmest thou thy way to seek love? therefore hast thou also taught the wicked ones thy ways.
34Also in thy skirts is found the blood of the souls of the poor innocents: I have not found it by secret search, but upon all these.
35Yet thou sayest, Because I am innocent, surely his anger shall turn from me. Behold, I will plead with thee, because thou sayest, I have not sinned.
36Why gaddest thou about so much to change thy way? thou also shalt be ashamed of Egypt, as thou wast ashamed of Assyria.
37Yea, thou shalt go forth from him, and thine hands upon thine head: for the LORD hath rejected thy confidences, and thou shalt not prosper in them.

1The LORD’s word came to me, saying,
2“Go and proclaim in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, ‘The LORD says, “I remember for you the kindness of your youth, your love as a bride, how you went after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown.
3Israel was holiness to the LORD, the first fruits of his increase. All who devour him will be held guilty. Evil will come on them,”’ says the LORD.”
4Hear the LORD’s word, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel!
5The LORD says, “What unrighteousness have your fathers found in me, that they have gone far from me, and have walked after worthless vanity, and have become worthless?
6They didn’t say, ‘Where is the LORD who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, who led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drought and of the shadow of death, through a land that no one passed through, and where no man lived?’
7I brought you into a plentiful land to eat its fruit and its goodness; but when you entered, you defiled my land, and made my heritage an abomination.
8The priests didn’t say, ‘Where is the LORD?’ and those who handle the law didn’t know me. The rulers also transgressed against me, and the prophets prophesied by Baal and followed things that do not profit.
9“Therefore I will yet contend with you,” says the LORD, “and I will contend with your children’s children.
10For pass over to the islands of Kittim, and see. Send to Kedar, and consider diligently, and see if there has been such a thing.
11Has a nation changed its gods, which really are no gods? But my people have changed their glory for that which doesn’t profit.
12“Be astonished, you heavens, at this and be horribly afraid. Be very desolate,” says the LORD.
13“For my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the spring of living waters, and cut out cisterns for themselves: broken cisterns that can’t hold water.
14Is Israel a slave? Is he born into slavery? Why has he become a captive?
15The young lions have roared at him and raised their voices. They have made his land waste. His cities are burned up, without inhabitant.
16The children also of Memphis and Tahpanhes have broken the crown of your head.
17“Haven’t you brought this on yourself, in that you have forsaken the LORD your God, when he led you by the way?
18Now what do you gain by going to Egypt, to drink the waters of the Shihor? Or why do you go on the way to Assyria, to drink the waters of the River?
19“Your own wickedness will correct you, and your backsliding will rebuke you. Know therefore and see that it is an evil and bitter thing, that you have forsaken the LORD your God, and that my fear is not in you,” says the Lord, GOD of Armies.
20“For long ago I broke off your yoke, and burst your bonds. You said, ‘I will not serve;’ for on every high hill and under every green tree you bowed yourself, playing the prostitute.
21Yet I had planted you a noble vine, a pure and faithful seed. How then have you turned into the degenerate branches of a foreign vine to me?
22For though you wash yourself with lye, and use much soap, yet your iniquity is marked before me,” says the Lord GOD.
23“How can you say, ‘I am not defiled. I have not gone after the Baals’? See your way in the valley. Know what you have done. You are a swift dromedary traversing her ways,
24a wild donkey used to the wilderness, that sniffs the wind in her craving. When she is in heat, who can turn her away? All those who seek her will not weary themselves. In her month, they will find her.
25“Keep your feet from being bare, and your throat from thirst. But you said, ‘It is in vain. No, for I have loved strangers, and I will go after them.’
26As the thief is ashamed when he is found, so the house of Israel is ashamed— they, their kings, their princes, their priests, and their prophets,
27who tell wood, ‘You are my father,’ and a stone, ‘You have given birth to me,’ for they have turned their back to me, and not their face, but in the time of their trouble they will say, ‘Arise, and save us!’
28“But where are your gods that you have made for yourselves? Let them arise, if they can save you in the time of your trouble, for you have as many gods as you have towns, O Judah.
29“Why will you contend with me? You all have transgressed against me,” says the LORD.
30“I have struck your children in vain. They received no correction. Your own sword has devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion.
31Generation, consider the LORD’s word. Have I been a wilderness to Israel? Or a land of thick darkness? Why do my people say, ‘We have broken loose. We will come to you no more’?
32“Can a virgin forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? Yet my people have forgotten me for days without number.
33How well you prepare your way to seek love! Therefore you have even taught the wicked women your ways.
34Also the blood of the souls of the innocent poor is found in your skirts. You didn’t find them breaking in, but it is because of all these things.
35“Yet you said, ‘I am innocent. Surely his anger has turned away from me.’ “Behold, I will judge you, because you say, ‘I have not sinned.’
36Why do you go about so much to change your ways? You will be ashamed of Egypt also, as you were ashamed of Assyria.
37You will also leave that place with your hands on your head; for the LORD has rejected those in whom you trust, and you won’t prosper with them.
