Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, no nombró a Jeconías, hijo del rey Joacim, como nuevo rey de Judá, sino que eligió a Sedequías, hijo de Josías.
Y REINÓ el rey Sedechîas hijo de Josías, en lugar de Conías hijo de Joacim, al cual Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia había constituído por rey en la tierra de Judá.
And king Zedekiah the son of Josiah reigned instead of Coniah the son of Jehoiakim, whom Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of Judah.

Pero ni el rey Sedequías ni sus oficiales ni el pueblo que se quedó en el país prestaron atención a lo que el Señor decía mediante Jeremías.
Mas no obedeció él, ni sus siervos, ni el pueblo de la tierra á las palabras de Jehová, que dijo por el profeta Jeremías.

Sin embargo, el rey Sedequías envió a Jucal, hijo de Selemías, y al sacerdote Sofonías, hijo de Maseías, a pedirle a Jeremías que orara por ellos.
Y envió el rey Sedechîas á Jucal hijo de Selemías, y á Sephanías hijo de Maasías sacerdote, para que dijesen al profeta Jeremías: Ruega ahora por nosotros á Jehová nuestro Dios.

Entonces el Señor envió este mensaje a Jeremías:

El Señor, el Dios de Israel, dice: Dile al rey de Judá que envió a preguntarme qué va a ocurrir, que el ejército del faraón, aunque vino acá para ayudarte, está a punto de volverse huyendo a Egipto. Los babilonios derrotarán a los egipcios y los harán regresar corriendo a su país.
Así ha dicho Jehová Dios de Israel: Diréis así al rey de Judá, que os envió á mí para que me preguntaseis: He aquí que el ejército de Faraón que había salido en vuestro socorro, se volvió á su tierra en Egipto.
Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel; Thus shall ye say to the king of Judah, that sent you unto me to enquire of me; Behold, Pharaoh’s army, which is come forth to help you, shall return to Egypt into their own land.
“The LORD, the God of Israel, says, ‘You shall tell the king of Judah, who sent you to me to inquire of me: “Behold, Pharaoh’s army, which has come out to help you, will return to Egypt into their own land.
Esos babilonios tomarán esta ciudad, la incendiarán y la dejarán convertida en cenizas.
Y tornarán los Caldeos, y combatirán esta ciudad, y la tomarán, y la pondrán á fuego.
And the Chaldeans shall come again, and fight against this city, and take it, and burn it with fire.
The Chaldeans will come again, and fight against this city. They will take it and burn it with fire.”’
No te hagas la ilusión de que los babilonios se han retirado definitivamente. ¡No es así!
Así ha dicho Jehová: No engañéis vuestras almas, diciendo: Sin duda los Caldeos se han ido de nosotros: porque no se irán.
Thus saith the LORD; Deceive not yourselves, saying, The Chaldeans shall surely depart from us: for they shall not depart.
“The LORD says, ‘Don’t deceive yourselves, saying, “The Chaldeans will surely depart from us;” for they will not depart.
Aunque destruyeras a todo el ejército babilónico, aunque sólo quedara un puñado de sobrevivientes que yacieran heridos en sus tiendas, aún así saldrían tambaleantes de sus tiendas, te derrotarían y prenderían fuego a esta ciudad.
Porque aun cuando hirieseis todo el ejército de los Caldeos que pelean con vosotros, y quedasen de ellos hombres alanceados, cada uno se levantará de su tienda, y pondrán esta ciudad á fuego.
For though ye had smitten the whole army of the Chaldeans that fight against you, and there remained but wounded men among them, yet should they rise up every man in his tent, and burn this city with fire.

Cuando el ejército babilónico se apartó de Jerusalén para entrar en batalla con el ejército del faraón,

Jeremías intentó salir de la ciudad rumbo a la tierra de Benjamín para ver la propiedad que había comprado.
Salíase de Jerusalem Jeremías para irse á tierra de Benjamín, para apartarse de allí en medio del pueblo.
Then Jeremiah went forth out of Jerusalem to go into the land of Benjamin, to separate himself thence in the midst of the people.

Pero cuando salía por la llamada puerta de Benjamín un centinela lo detuvo como traidor, acusándolo de querer pasarse al lado de los babilonios. El centinela que lo detuvo era Irías, hijo de Selemías, nieto de Jananías.
Y cuando fué á la puerta de Benjamín, estaba allí un prepósito que se llamaba Irías, hijo de Selemías, hijo de Hananías, el cual prendió á Jeremías profeta, diciendo: Tú te retiras á los Caldeos.
And when he was in the gate of Benjamin, a captain of the ward was there, whose name was Irijah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah; and he took Jeremiah the prophet, saying, Thou fallest away to the Chaldeans.
When he was in Benjamin’s gate, a captain of the guard was there, whose name was Irijah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah; and he seized Jeremiah the prophet, saying, “You are defecting to the Chaldeans!”
―¡No es cierto! —dijo Jeremías—. ¡No tengo la menor intención de hacer tal cosa! Pero Irías no le hizo caso; llevó a Jeremías ante los funcionarios de la ciudad.
Y Jeremías dijo: Falso: no me retiro á los Caldeos. Mas él no lo escuchó, antes prendió Irías á Jeremías, y llevólo delante de los príncipes.
Then said Jeremiah, It is false; I fall not away to the Chaldeans. But he hearkened not to him: so Irijah took Jeremiah, and brought him to the princes.
Then Jeremiah said, “That is false! I am not defecting to the Chaldeans.” But he didn’t listen to him; so Irijah seized Jeremiah, and brought him to the princes.
Estos, enfurecidos contra Jeremías, lo hicieron azotar y echar en un calabozo subterráneo de la casa del escriba Jonatán, la cual había sido convertida en prisión. Allí tuvieron varios días a Jeremías,
Y los príncipes se airaron contra Jeremías, y azotáronle, y pusiéronle en prisión en la casa de Jonathán escriba, porque aquélla habían hecho casa de cárcel.
Wherefore the princes were wroth with Jeremiah, and smote him, and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe: for they had made that the prison.

Entró pues Jeremías en la casa de la mazmorra, y en las camarillas. Y habiendo estado allá Jeremías por muchos días,

pero al fin el rey Sedequías lo mandó a llevar secretamente al palacio. El rey le preguntó si había recibido algún mensaje reciente del Señor. ―Sí —dijo Jeremías—, lo he recibido. ¡Serás derrotado por el rey de Babilonia!
El rey Sedechîas envió, y sacóle; y preguntóle el rey escondidamente en su casa, y dijo: ¿Hay palabra de Jehová? Y Jeremías dijo: Hay. Y dijo más: En mano del rey de Babilonia serás entregado.
Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took him out: and the king asked him secretly in his house, and said, Is there any word from the LORD? And Jeremiah said, There is: for, said he, thou shalt be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon.

Entonces Jeremías planteó la cuestión de su encarcelamiento: ―¿Qué hice yo para merecer esto? —le preguntó al rey—. ¿Qué delito he cometido? Dime lo que haya hecho contra ti, tus oficiales o el pueblo.
Dijo también Jeremías al rey Sedechîas: ¿En qué pequé contra ti, y contra tus siervos, y contra este pueblo, para que me pusieseis en la casa de la cárcel?
Moreover Jeremiah said unto king Zedekiah, What have I offended against thee, or against thy servants, or against this people, that ye have put me in prison?
Moreover Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah, “How have I sinned against you, against your servants, or against this people, that you have put me in prison?
¿Dónde están ahora aquellos profetas que te decían que el rey de Babilonia no vendría?
¿Y dónde están vuestros profetas que os profetizaban, diciendo: No vendrá el rey de Babilonia contra vosotros, ni contra esta tierra?
Where are now your prophets which prophesied unto you, saying, The king of Babylon shall not come against you, nor against this land?
Now where are your prophets who prophesied to you, saying, ‘The king of Babylon will not come against you, nor against this land’?
Escucha, oh rey, señor mío: Te suplico no enviarme otra vez a aquel calabozo, pues allí moriría.
Ahora pues, oye, te ruego, oh rey mi señor: caiga ahora mi súplica delante de ti, y no me hagas volver á casa de Jonathán escriba, porque no me muera allí.
Therefore hear now, I pray thee, O my lord the king: let my supplication, I pray thee, be accepted before thee; that thou cause me not to return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, lest I die there.
Now please hear, my lord the king: please let my supplication be presented before you, that you not cause me to return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, lest I die there.”
Entonces el rey Sedequías mandó que no volvieran a llevar a Jeremías al calabozo, sino que lo pusieran en la cárcel del palacio, y ordenó que le dieran cada día un pedazo de pan fresco mientras en la ciudad quedara qué comer. Así tuvieron a Jeremías en la cárcel del palacio.
Entonces dió orden el rey Sedechîas, y depositaron á Jeremías en el patio de la cárcel, haciéndole dar una torta de pan al día, de la plaza de los Panaderos, hasta que todo el pan de la ciudad se gastase. Y quedó Jeremías en el patio de la cárcel.
Then Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah into the court of the prison, and that they should give him daily a piece of bread out of the bakers’ street, until all the bread in the city were spent. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.
