1Ve a todas partes por las calles de Jerusalén. Busca y presta atención. Busca por todas las plazas de su ciudad a ver si encuentras aunque sea una sola persona que haga lo correcto, alguien que sea fiel, y yo perdonaré a la ciudad.
2Pueden hacer promesas en mi nombre, pero no son sinceras.
3Señor, ¿no buscas siempre la fidelidad? Los derrotaste, pero no les importó. Estuviste a punto de destruirlos, pero se negaron a aceptar tu disciplina. Eran tercos, duros como una roca, y no se arrepentían.
4Entonces me dije: “Esta gente no es más que los pobres; son sólo tontos que no conocen nada mejor. Ciertamente no saben lo que quiere el Señor, la manera correcta de vivir de Dios.
5Déjame ir a hablar con los que mandan. Ellos seguramente sabrán lo que quiere el Señor, la forma correcta de vivir de Dios”. Pero todos habían roto también el yugo, y arrancado las cadenas.
6Como resultado, un león del bosque los atacará; un lobo del desierto los desgarrará. Un leopardo los acechará cerca de sus ciudades, listo para despedazar a cualquiera que salga. Porque no dejan de rebelarse y se alejan de mí tantas veces.
7¿Por qué habría de perdonarlos? Tus hijos me han abandonado y creen en dioses que no son dioses. Les he dado todo lo que necesitan, y sin embargo han ido a cometer adulterio, reuniéndose en casas de prostitutas.
8Son como sementales viriles con ganas de sexo, cada uno de ellos relinchando de lujuria tras la mujer de su vecino.
9¿No debería yo castigarlos por todo esto? declara el Señor. ¿No debo tomar represalias por lo que ha hecho esta nación?
10Atraviesa sus viñedos y destrúyelos, pero no los destruyas por completo. Arranca sus ramas, porque no le pertenecen al Señor.
11El pueblo de Israel y de Judá me ha traicionado completamente, declara el Señor.
12Han mentido acerca del Señor, diciendo: “Él no hará nada. No nos ocurrirá nada malo. No tendremos guerra ni hambre.
13Los profetas son como el viento. El Señor no habla a través de ellos. Lo que predicen puede ocurrirles a ellos”.
14Esta es la respuesta del Señor Dios Todopoderoso: Por lo que has dicho, haré que mis palabras sean como un fuego en tu boca y que tú seas como la leña que quema.
15¡Mira! Traigo una nación de muy lejos para atacarte, pueblo de Israel, declara el Señor. Es una nación poderosa que existe desde hace mucho tiempo; es una nación cuya lengua no conoces, y cuando habla no puedes entenderla.
16Sus flechas traen la muerte; todos ellos son fuertes guerreros.
17Consumirán tu cosecha y tu comida; destruirán a tus hijos y a tus hijas; se comerán tus rebaños y tus manadas; se alimentarán de tus viñas y de tus higueras. Atacarán y destruirán las ciudades fortificadas en las que tanto confías.
18Pero ni siquiera en ese momento te destruiré por completo, declara el Señor.
19Cuando la gente te pregunte, Jeremías, “¿Por qué el Señor, nuestro Dios, nos ha hecho todas estas cosas?” , les dirás: “De la misma manera que ustedes me han abandonado y han servido a dioses extranjeros aquí en su país, así servirán a extranjeros en un país que no es el suyo”.
20Anuncia esto al pueblo de Jacob y de Judá:
21Escuchen esto, pueblo necio y estúpido, que tiene ojos y no ve, que tiene oídos y no oye.
22¿No tienen miedo de lo que puedo hacer? declara el Señor. ¿No creen que deberían temblar en mi presencia? Yo soy el que puso la orilla como límite del mar, un límite eterno que no puede cruzar. Las olas chocan contra ella, pero no pueden vencerla. Rugen, pero no pueden cruzar la barrera.
23Pero ustedes tienen una actitud obstinada y rebelde. Me han dejado y se han ido por su propia cuenta.
24No han pensado ni siquiera en decir: “Debemos apreciar al Señor, nuestro Dios, que envía las lluvias de otoño y primavera en el momento oportuno, que hace que podamos tener una cosecha cada año”.
25Tus malas acciones te han quitado estos beneficios; tus pecados te han privado de mis bendiciones.
26Porque hay hombres malvados en mi pueblo. Son como cazadores de pájaros, que vigilan en secreto y esperan atrapar a la gente en su trampa.
27Sus casas están llenas de sus ganancias mal habidas, como jaulas llenas de pájaros. Por eso se han hecho poderosos y ricos.
28Han engordado y se han hecho expertos en el mal. Niegan la justicia a los huérfanos, y no defienden los derechos de los necesitados.
29¿No debería yo castigarlos por todo esto? declara el Señor. ¿No debo tomar represalias por lo que ha hecho esta nación?
30Algo horrible, algo terrible ha ocurrido en este país.
31Los profetas dan falsas profecías; los sacerdotes gobiernan a su antojo. Mi pueblo lo quiere así, pero ¿qué hará cuando todo se derrumbe?

1DISCURRID por las plazas de Jerusalem, y mirad ahora, y sabed, y buscad en sus plazas si halláis hombre, si hay alguno que haga juicio, que busque verdad; y yo la perdonaré.
2Y si dijeren: Vive Jehová; por tanto jurarán mentira.
3Oh Jehová, ¿no miran tus ojos á la verdad? Azotástelos, y no les dolió; consumístelos, y no quisieron recibir corrección; endurecieron sus rostros más que la piedra, no quisieron tornarse.
4Yo empero dije: Por cierto ellos son pobres, enloquecido han, pues no conocen el camino de Jehová, el juicio de su Dios.
5Irme he á los grandes, y hablaréles; porque ellos conocen el camino de Jehová, el juicio de su Dios. Ciertamente ellos también quebraron el yugo, rompieron las coyundas.
6Por tanto, león del monte los herirá, destruirálos lobo del desierto, tigre acechará sobre sus ciudades; cualquiera que de ellas saliere, será arrebatado: porque sus rebeliones se han multiplicado, hanse aumentado sus deslealtades.
7¿Cómo te he de perdonar por esto? Sus hijos me dejaron, y juraron por lo que no es Dios. Saciélos, y adulteraron, y en casa de ramera se juntaron en compañías.
8Como caballos bien hartos fueron á la mañana, cada cual relinchaba á la mujer de su prójimo.
9¿No había de hacer visitación sobre esto? dijo Jehová. De una gente como ésta ¿no se había de vengar mi alma?
10Escalad sus muros, y destruid; mas no hagáis consumación: quitad las almenas de sus muros, porque no son de Jehová.
11Porque resueltamente se rebelaron contra mí la casa de Israel y la casa de Judá, dice Jehová.
12Negaron á Jehová, y dijeron: El no es, y no vendrá mal sobre nosotros, ni veremos cuchillo ni hambre;
13Antes los profetas serán como viento, y no hay en ellos palabra; así se hará á ellos.
14Por tanto, así ha dicho Jehová Dios de los ejércitos: Porque hablasteis esta palabra, he aquí yo pongo en tu boca mis palabras por fuego, y á este pueblo por leños, y los consumirá.
15He aquí yo traigo sobre vosotros gente de lejos, oh casa de Israel, dice Jehová; gente robusta, gente antigua, gente cuya lengua ignorarás, y no entenderás lo que hablare.
16Su aljaba como sepulcro abierto, todos valientes.
17Y comerá tu mies y tu pan, que habían de comer tus hijos y tus hijas; comerá tus ovejas y tus vacas, comerá tus viñas y tus higueras; y tus ciudades fuertes en que tú confías, tornará en nada á cuchillo.
18Empero en aquellos días, dice Jehová, no os acabaré del todo.
19Y será que cuando dijereis: ¿Por qué hizo Jehová el Dios nuestro con nosotros todas estas cosas? entonces les dirás: De la manera que me dejasteis á mí, y servisteis á dioses ajenos en vuestra tierra, así serviréis á extraños en tierra ajena.
20Denunciad esto en la casa de Jacob, y haced que esto se oiga en Judá, diciendo:
21Oid ahora esto, pueblo necio y sin corazón, que tienen ojos y no ven, que tienen oídos y no oyen:
22¿A mí no temeréis? dice Jehová; ¿no os amedrentaréis á mi presencia, que al mar por ordenación eterna, la cual no quebrantará, puse arena por término? Se levantarán tempestades, mas no prevalecerán; bramarán sus ondas, mas no lo pasarán.
23Empero este pueblo tiene corazón falso y rebelde; tornáronse y fuéronse.
24Y no dijeron en su corazón: Temamos ahora á Jehová Dios nuestro, que da lluvia temprana y tardía en su tiempo; los tiempos establecidos de la siega nos guarda.
25Vuestras iniquidades han estorbado estas cosas; y vuestros pecados apartaron de vosotros el bien.
26Porque fueron hallados en mi pueblo impíos; acechaban como quien pone lazos; pusieron trampa para tomar hombres.
27Como jaula llena de pájaros, así están sus casas llenas de engaño: así se hicieron grandes y ricos.
28Engordaron y pusiéronse lustrosos, y sobrepujaron los hechos del malo: no juzgaron la causa, la causa del huérfano; con todo hiciéronse prósperos, y la causa de los pobres no juzgaron.
29¿No tengo de visitar sobre esto? dice Jehová; ¿y de tal gente no se vengará mi alma?
30Cosa espantosa y fea es hecha en la tierra:
31Los profetas profetizaron mentira, y los sacerdotes dirigían por manos de ellos; y mi pueblo así lo quiso. ¿Qué pues haréis á su fin?

1Run ye to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in the broad places thereof, if ye can find a man, if there be any that executeth judgment, that seeketh the truth; and I will pardon it.
2And though they say, The LORD liveth; surely they swear falsely.
3O LORD, are not thine eyes upon the truth? thou hast stricken them, but they have not grieved; thou hast consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return.
4Therefore I said, Surely these are poor; they are foolish: for they know not the way of the LORD, nor the judgment of their God.
5I will get me unto the great men, and will speak unto them; for they have known the way of the LORD, and the judgment of their God: but these have altogether broken the yoke, and burst the bonds.
6Wherefore a lion out of the forest shall slay them, and a wolf of the evenings shall spoil them, a leopard shall watch over their cities: every one that goeth out thence shall be torn in pieces: because their transgressions are many, and their backslidings are increased.
7How shall I pardon thee for this? thy children have forsaken me, and sworn by them that are no gods: when I had fed them to the full, they then committed adultery, and assembled themselves by troops in the harlots’ houses.
8They were as fed horses in the morning: every one neighed after his neighbour’s wife.
9Shall I not visit for these things? saith the LORD: and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?
10Go ye up upon her walls, and destroy; but make not a full end: take away her battlements; for they are not the LORD’s.
11For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt very treacherously against me, saith the LORD.
12They have belied the LORD, and said, It is not he; neither shall evil come upon us; neither shall we see sword nor famine:
13And the prophets shall become wind, and the word is not in them: thus shall it be done unto them.
14Wherefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them.
15Lo, I will bring a nation upon you from far, O house of Israel, saith the LORD: it is a mighty nation, it is an ancient nation, a nation whose language thou knowest not, neither understandest what they say.
16Their quiver is as an open sepulchre, they are all mighty men.
17And they shall eat up thine harvest, and thy bread, which thy sons and thy daughters should eat: they shall eat up thy flocks and thine herds: they shall eat up thy vines and thy fig trees: they shall impoverish thy fenced cities, wherein thou trustedst, with the sword.
18Nevertheless in those days, saith the LORD, I will not make a full end with you.
19And it shall come to pass, when ye shall say, Wherefore doeth the LORD our God all these things unto us? then shalt thou answer them, Like as ye have forsaken me, and served strange gods in your land, so shall ye serve strangers in a land that is not yours.
20Declare this in the house of Jacob, and publish it in Judah, saying,
21Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not:
22Fear ye not me? saith the LORD: will ye not tremble at my presence, which have placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it: and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it?
23But this people hath a revolting and a rebellious heart; they are revolted and gone.
24Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear the LORD our God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in his season: he reserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest.
25Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withholden good things from you.
26For among my people are found wicked men: they lay wait, as he that setteth snares; they set a trap, they catch men.
27As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit: therefore they are become great, and waxen rich.
28They are waxen fat, they shine: yea, they overpass the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge.
29Shall I not visit for these things? saith the LORD: shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?
30A wonderful and horrible thing is committed in the land;
31The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?
World English Bible
1“Run back and forth through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in its wide places, if you can find a man, if there is anyone who does justly, who seeks truth, then I will pardon her.
2Though they say, ‘As the LORD lives,’ surely they swear falsely.”
3O LORD, don’t your eyes look on truth? You have stricken them, but they were not grieved. You have consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction. They have made their faces harder than a rock. They have refused to return.
4Then I said, “Surely these are poor. They are foolish; for they don’t know the LORD’s way, nor the law of their God.
5I will go to the great men and will speak to them, for they know the way of the LORD, and the law of their God.” But these with one accord have broken the yoke, and burst the bonds.
6Therefore a lion out of the forest will kill them. A wolf of the evenings will destroy them. A leopard will watch against their cities. Everyone who goes out there will be torn in pieces, because their transgressions are many and their backsliding has increased.
7“How can I pardon you? Your children have forsaken me, and sworn by what are no gods. When I had fed them to the full, they committed adultery, and assembled themselves in troops at the prostitutes’ houses.

9Shouldn’t I punish them for these things?” says the LORD. “Shouldn’t my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?

11For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt very treacherously against me,” says the LORD.
12They have denied the LORD, and said, “It is not he. Evil won’t come on us. We won’t see sword or famine.
13The prophets will become wind, and the word is not in them. Thus it will be done to them.”
14Therefore the LORD, the God of Armies says, “Because you speak this word, behold, I will make my words in your mouth fire, and this people wood, and it will devour them.
15Behold, I will bring a nation on you from far away, house of Israel,” says the LORD. “It is a mighty nation. It is an ancient nation, a nation whose language you don’t know and don’t understand what they say.
16Their quiver is an open tomb. They are all mighty men.
17They will eat up your harvest and your bread, which your sons and your daughters should eat. They will eat up your flocks and your herds. They will eat up your vines and your fig trees. They will beat down your fortified cities in which you trust with the sword.
18“But even in those days,” says the LORD, “I will not make a full end of you.
19It will happen when you say, ‘Why has the LORD our God done all these things to us?’ Then you shall say to them, ‘Just as you have forsaken me and served foreign gods in your land, so you will serve strangers in a land that is not yours.’
20“Declare this in the house of Jacob, and publish it in Judah, saying,
21‘Hear this now, foolish people without understanding, who have eyes, and don’t see, who have ears, and don’t hear:
22Don’t you fear me?’ says the LORD; ‘Won’t you tremble at my presence, who have placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it can’t pass it? Though its waves toss themselves, yet they can’t prevail. Though they roar, they still can’t pass over it.’
23“But this people has a revolting and a rebellious heart. They have revolted and gone.
24They don’t say in their heart, ‘Let’s now fear the LORD our God, who gives rain, both the former and the latter, in its season, who preserves to us the appointed weeks of the harvest.’

29“Shouldn’t I punish for these things?” says the LORD. “Shouldn’t my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?
30“An astonishing and horrible thing has happened in the land.
31The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests rule by their own authority; and my people love to have it so. What will you do in the end of it?
