Y cierto hombre llamado Lázaro estaba enfermo; él era de Betania, la ciudad de María y su hermana Marta.

ESTABA entonces enfermo uno llamado Lázaro, de Bethania, la aldea de María y de Marta su hermana.

Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.

Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus from Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister, Martha.

María cuyo hermano Lázaro estaba enfermo, era la María que le puso aceite perfumado al Señor y le hizo secar los pies con el pelo.

(Y María, cuyo hermano Lázaro estaba enfermo, era la que ungió al Señor con ungüento, y limpió sus pies con sus cabellos.)

(It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)

It was that Mary who had anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.

Entonces las hermanas le enviaron diciendo: Señor, tu querido amigo está enfermo.

Enviaron, pues, sus hermanas á él, diciendo: Señor, he aquí, el que amas está enfermo.

Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.

The sisters therefore sent to him, saying, “Lord, behold, he for whom you have great affection is sick.”

Cuando esto llegó a sus oídos, Jesús dijo: El fin de esta enfermedad no es muerte, sino la gloria de Dios, para que el Hijo de Dios tenga gloria por causa de ella.

Y oyéndolo Jesús, dijo: Esta enfermedad no es para muerte, mas por gloria de Dios, para que el Hijo de Dios sea glorificado por ella.

When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.

But when Jesus heard it, he said, “This sickness is not to death, but for the glory of God, that God’s Son may be glorified by it.”

Ahora Jesús tenía amor en su corazón por Marta, su hermana y Lázaro.

Y amaba Jesús á Marta, y á su hermana, y á Lázaro.

Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.

Y cuando le llegó la noticia de que Lázaro estaba enfermo, no fue del lugar donde estuvo por dos días.

Como oyó pues que estaba enfermo, quedóse aún dos días en aquel lugar donde estaba.

When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.

When therefore he heard that he was sick, he stayed two days in the place where he was.

Luego, después de ese tiempo, dijo a sus discípulos: Vayamos a Judea otra vez.

Luego, después de esto, dijo á los discípulos: Vamos á Judea otra vez.

Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judæa again.

Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let’s go into Judea again.”

Los discípulos le dijeron: Maestro, el otro día los judíos intentaron apedrearte, ¿y volverás allí otra vez?

Dícenle los discípulos: Rabbí, ahora procuraban los Judíos apedrearte, ¿y otra vez vas allá?

His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?

The disciples asked him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just trying to stone you. Are you going there again?”

Entonces Jesús dijo en respuesta: ¿No hay doce horas en el día? Un hombre puede andar en el día sin caer, porque ve la luz de este mundo.

Respondió Jesús: ¿No tiene el día doce horas? El que anduviere de día, no tropieza, porque ve la luz de este mundo.

Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.

Jesus answered, “Aren’t there twelve hours of daylight? If a man walks in the day, he doesn’t stumble, because he sees the light of this world.

Pero si un hombre anda por la noche, puede caer porque la luz no está en él.

Mas el que anduviere de noche, tropieza, porque no hay luz en él.

But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.

But if a man walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light isn’t in him.”

Estas cosas dijo él: y después de eso les dijo: Lázaro nuestro amigo está en reposo; pero voy para que pueda hacerlo salir de su sueño.

Dicho esto, díceles después: Lázaro nuestro amigo duerme; mas voy á despertarle del sueño.

These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.

He said these things, and after that, he said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going so that I may awake him out of sleep.”

Entonces sus discípulos le dijeron: Señor, si está descansando, se pondrá bien.

Dijeron entonces sus discípulos: Señor, si duerme, salvo estará.

Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.

The disciples therefore said, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.”

Jesús, sin embargo, estaba hablando de su muerte, pero tenían la idea de que estaba hablando de descansar en sueños.

Mas esto decía Jesús de la muerte de él: y ellos pensaron que hablaba del reposar del sueño.

Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.

Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he spoke of taking rest in sleep.

Entonces Jesús les dijo claramente: Lázaro está muerto.

Entonces, pues, Jesús les dijo claramente: Lázaro es muerto;

Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.

So Jesus said to them plainly then, “Lazarus is dead.

Y por su causa me alegro de no haber estado allí, para que tengan fe; pero vayamos a él.

Y huélgome por vosotros, que yo no haya estado allí, para que creáis: mas vamos á él.

And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.

I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe. Nevertheless, let’s go to him.”

Entonces Tomás, que le llamaban el gemelo, dijo a los otros discípulos: Subamos para que podamos estar con él en la muerte.

Dijo entonces Tomás, el que se dice el Dídimo, á sus condiscípulos: Vamos también nosotros, para que muramos con él.

Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.

Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s also go, that we may die with him.”

Cuando Jesús vino, descubrió que Lázaro había sido sepultado cuatro días antes.

Vino pues Jesús, y halló que había ya cuatro días que estaba en el sepulcro.

Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.

So when Jesus came, he found that he had been in the tomb four days already.

Ahora bien, Betania estaba cerca de Jerusalén, a unos tres kilómetros de distancia;

Y Bethania estaba cerca de Jerusalem, como quince estadios;

Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:

Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia away.

Y algunos judíos habían venido a Marta y María para consolarlas acerca de su hermano.

Y muchos de los Judíos habían venido á Marta y á María, á consolarlas de su hermano.

And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.

Many of the Jews had joined the women around Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother.

Cuando Marta tuvo la noticia de que Jesús estaba en camino, ella salió a buscarlo, pero María no se fue de la casa.

Entonces Marta, como oyó que Jesús venía, salió á encontrarle; mas María se estuvo en casa.

Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.

Then when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary stayed in the house.

Entonces Marta le dijo a Jesús: Señor, si hubieses estado aquí, mi hermano no estaría muerto.

Y Marta dijo á Jesús: Señor, si hubieses estado aquí, mi hermano no fuera muerto;

Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

Therefore Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.

Pero estoy segura de que, incluso ahora, cualquier solicitud que hagas a Dios, Dios te la dará.

Mas también sé ahora, que todo lo que pidieres de Dios, te dará Dios.

But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.

Even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you.”

Jesús le dijo: Tu hermano volverá a la vida.

Dícele Jesús: Resucitará tu hermano.

Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.

Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”

Marta le dijo: Estoy seguro de que volverá a la vida cuando todos vuelvan de entre los muertos en el último día.

Marta le dice: Yo sé que resucitará en la resurrección en el día postrero.

Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.

Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”

Jesús le dijo: Yo soy la resurrección y la vida; el que tiene fe en mí tendrá vida aunque esté muerto;

Dícele Jesús: Yo soy la resurrección y la vida: el que cree en mí, aunque esté muerto, vivirá.

Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies.

Y nadie que viva y tenga fe en mí verá la muerte. ¿Es esta tu fe?

Y todo aquel que vive y cree en mí, no morirá eternamente. ¿Crees esto?

And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?

Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

Ella le dijo: Sí, Señor; mi fe es que tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios, que había de venir al mundo.

Dícele: Sí, Señor; yo he creído que tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios, que has venido al mundo.

She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.

She said to him, “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, God’s Son, he who comes into the world.”

Y habiendo dicho esto, ella se fue y le dijo en secreto a su hermana María: El Maestro está aquí y te ha enviado a buscar.

Y esto dicho, fuése, y llamó en secreto á María su hermana, diciendo: El Maestro está aquí y te llama.

And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.

When she had said this, she went away and called Mary, her sister, secretly, saying, “The Teacher is here and is calling you.”

Y María, al oír esto, se levantó rápidamente y fue hacia él.

Ella, como lo oyó, levántase prestamente y viene á él.

As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him.

When she heard this, she arose quickly and went to him.

Ahora bien, Jesús no había entrado en este momento en la ciudad, sino que todavía estaba en el lugar donde Marta lo había visto.

(Que aun no había llegado Jesús á la aldea, mas estaba en aquel lugar donde Marta le había encontrado.)

Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.

Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha met him.

Entonces los judíos que estaban con ella en la casa, consolándola, cuando vieron a María levantarse rápidamente y salir, la siguieron con la creencia de que ella iría al lugar de los muertos y lloraría allí.

Entonces los Judíos que estaban en casa con ella, y la consolaban, como vieron que María se había levantado prestamente, y había salido, siguiéronla, diciendo: Va al sepulcro á llorar allí.

The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there.

Then the Jews who were with her in the house and were consoling her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, “She is going to the tomb to weep there.”

Cuando María llegó donde Jesús estaba y lo vio, se postró a sus pies, diciendo: Señor, si hubieses estado aquí, mi hermano no estaría muerto.

Mas María, como vino donde estaba Jesús, viéndole, derribóse á sus pies, diciéndole: Señor, si hubieras estado aquí, no fuera muerto mi hermano.

Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

Therefore when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.”

Y cuando Jesús la vio llorar, y vio a los judíos que lloraban que venían con ella, su espíritu se conmovió y se turbó,

Jesús entonces, como la vió llorando, y á los Judíos que habían venido juntamente con ella llorando, se conmovió en espíritu, y turbóse,

When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,

y dijo: ¿Dónde lo has puesto? Dijeron: Ven y mira, Señor.

Y dijo: ¿Dónde le pusisteis? Dícenle: Señor, ven, y ve.

And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.

and said, “Where have you laid him?” They told him, “Lord, come and see.”

Y Jesús mismo estaba llorando.

Y lloró Jesús.

Jesus wept.

Jesus wept.

Entonces los judíos dijeron: ¡Mira cuán querido era para él!

Dijeron entonces los Judíos: Mirad cómo le amaba.

Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!

The Jews therefore said, “See how much affection he had for him!”

Pero algunos de ellos dijeron: Este hombre, que abrió los ojos del ciego, ¿no fue capaz de guardar a su amigo de la muerte?

Y algunos de ellos dijeron: ¿No podía éste que abrió los ojos al ciego, hacer que éste no muriera?

And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?

Some of them said, “Couldn’t this man, who opened the eyes of him who was blind, have also kept this man from dying?”

Entonces Jesús, trastornado de corazón, vino al lugar de los muertos. Era un agujero en la roca, y una piedra estaba sobre la abertura.

Y Jesús, conmoviéndose otra vez en sí mismo, vino al sepulcro. Era una cueva, la cual tenía una piedra encima.

Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.

Jesus therefore, again groaning in himself, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it.

Jesús dijo: Toma la piedra. Marta, la hermana de él que estaba muerto, dijo: Señor, para entonces el cuerpo estará oliendo, porque ha estado muerto cuatro días.

Dice Jesús: Quitad la piedra. Marta, la hermana del que se había muerto, le dice: Señor, hiede ya, que es de cuatro días.

Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.

Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to him, “Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.”

Jesús le dijo: ¿No te he dicho que si tuvieras fe, verías la gloria de Dios?

Jesús le dice: ¿No te he dicho que, si creyeres, verás la gloria de Dios?

Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?

Jesus said to her, “Didn’t I tell you that if you believed, you would see God’s glory?”

Entonces quitaron la piedra. Y Jesús, mirando al cielo, dijo: Padre, te alabo por haberme oído.

Entonces quitaron la piedra de donde el muerto había sido puesto. Y Jesús, alzando los ojos arriba, dijo: Padre, gracias te doy que me has oído.

Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.

So they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you listened to me.

Estaba seguro de que tus oídos están abiertos para mí en todo momento, pero lo dije por estos que están aquí, para que crean que me enviaste.

Que yo sabía que siempre me oyes; mas por causa de la compañía que está alrededor, lo dije, para que crean que tú me has enviado.

And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.

I know that you always listen to me, but because of the multitude standing around I said this, that they may believe that you sent me.”

Entonces dijo en voz alta: ¡Lázaro, sal fuera!

Y habiendo dicho estas cosas, clamó á gran voz: Lázaro, ven fuera.

And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.

When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”

Y salió el que estaba muerto, con vendas de lino dobladas alrededor de sus manos y pies, y un paño alrededor de su rostro. Jesús les dijo: Libérenlo y déjenlo ir.

Y el que había estado muerto, salió, atadas las manos y los pies con vendas; y su rostro estaba envuelto en un sudario. Díceles Jesús: Desatadle, y dejadle ir.

And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

He who was dead came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Free him, and let him go.”

Entonces algunos de los judíos que habían venido a María y habían visto las cosas que Jesús hizo, creyeron en él.

Entonces muchos de los Judíos que habían venido á María, y habían visto lo que había hecho Jesús, creyeron en él.

Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.

Therefore many of the Jews who came to Mary and saw what Jesus did believed in him.

Pero algunos de ellos fueron a los fariseos con la noticia de lo que Jesús había hecho.

Mas algunos de ellos fueron á los Fariseos, y dijéronles lo que Jesús había hecho.

But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.

But some of them went away to the Pharisees and told them the things which Jesus had done.

Entonces los sumos sacerdotes y los fariseos se encontraron y dijeron: ¿Qué estamos haciendo? Este hombre está haciendo una serie de milagros.

Entonces los pontífices y los Fariseos juntaron concilio, y decían: ¿Qué hacemos? porque este hombre hace muchas señales.

Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.

The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, “What are we doing? For this man does many signs.

Si lo dejamos continuar de esta manera, todos creerán en él y los romanos vendrán y quitarán nuestro lugar y nuestra nación.

Si le dejamos así, todos creerán en él: y vendrán los Romanos, y quitarán nuestro lugar y la nación.

If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.

If we leave him alone like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.”

Pero uno de ellos, Caifás, que era sumo sacerdote aquel año, les dijo: No sabéis nada;

Y Caifás, uno de ellos, sumo pontífice de aquel año, les dijo: Vosotros no sabéis nada;

And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,

But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all,

Ustedes no saben ni se dan cuenta que les conviene que un hombre muera por la gente, para que toda la nación no llegue a la destrucción.

Ni pensáis que nos conviene que un hombre muera por el pueblo, y no que toda la nación se pierda.

Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.

nor do you consider that it is advantageous for us that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish.”

No dijo esto por sí mismo, sino que siendo el sumo sacerdote ese año, dijo, como profeta, que Jesús sería ejecutado por la nación;

Mas esto no lo dijo de sí mismo; sino que, como era el sumo pontífice de aquel año, profetizó que Jesús había de morir por la nación:

And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;

Now he didn’t say this of himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation,

Y no solo para esa nación, sino con el propósito de unir en un solo cuerpo a los hijos de Dios en todo el mundo.

Y no solamente por aquella nación, mas también para que juntase en uno los hijos de Dios que estaban derramados.

And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.

and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.

Y desde ese día pensaban juntos cómo matarlo.

Así que, desde aquel día consultaban juntos de matarle.

Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.

So from that day forward they took counsel that they might put him to death.

Entonces Jesús ya no andaba en público entre los judíos, sino que se fue de allí a la tierra cerca del desierto, a un pueblo llamado Efraín, donde estuvo algún tiempo con los discípulos.

Por tanto, Jesús ya no andaba manifiestamente entre los Judíos; mas fuése de allí á la tierra que está junto al desierto, á una ciudad que se llama Ephraim: y estábase allí con sus discípulos.

Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.

Y estaba cerca la Pascua de los judíos, y muchas personas de los pueblos se dirigian a Jerusalén para purificarse antes de la Pascua.

Y la Pascua de los Judíos estaba cerca: y muchos subieron de aquella tierra á Jerusalem antes de la Pascua, para purificarse;

And the Jews’ passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves.

Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand. Many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves.

Ellos estaban buscando a Jesús y diciéndose unos a otros mientras estaban en el Templo, ¿Cuál es su opinión? ¿No va a venir a la fiesta?

Y buscaban á Jesús, y hablaban los unos con los otros estando en el templo: ¿Qué os parece, que no vendrá á la fiesta?

Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?

Then they sought for Jesus and spoke with one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think—that he isn’t coming to the feast at all?”

Los jefes de los sacerdotes y los fariseos habían dado órdenes para que, si alguien supiera dónde estaba, les diera noticias, para que lo arrestaran.

Y los pontífices y los Fariseos habían dado mandamiento, que si alguno supiese dónde estuviera, lo manifestase, para que le prendiesen.

Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.

Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had commanded that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it, that they might seize him.
