1OR v'era un certo Lazaro, di Betania, del castello di Maria, e di Marta, sua sorella, il quale era infermo.
2(Or Maria era quella che unse d'olio odorifero il Signore, ed asciugò i suoi piedi co' suoi capelli; della quale il fratello Lazaro era infermo.)
3Le sorelle adunque mandarono a dire a Gesù: Signore, ecco, colui che tu ami è infermo.
4E Gesù, udito ciò, disse: Questa infermità non è a morte, ma per la gloria di Dio, acciocchè il Figliuol di Dio sia glorificato per essa.
5Or Gesù amava Marta, e la sua sorella, e Lazaro.
6Come dunque egli ebbe inteso ch'egli era infermo, dimorò ancora nel luogo ove egli era due giorni.
7Poi appresso disse a' suoi discepoli: Andiam di nuovo in Giudea.
8I discepoli gli dissero: Maestro, i Giudei pur ora cercavan di lapidarti, e tu vai di nuovo là?
9Gesù rispose: Non vi son eglino dodici ore del giorno? se alcuno cammina di giorno, non s'intoppa, perciocchè vede la luce di questo mondo.
10Ma, se alcuno cammina di notte, s'intoppa, perciocchè egli non ha luce.
11Egli disse queste cose; e poi appresso disse loro: Lazaro, nostro amico, dorme; ma io vo per isvegliarlo.
12Laonde i suoi discepoli dissero: Signore, se egli dorme, sarà salvo.
13Or Gesù avea detto della morte di esso; ma essi pensavano ch'egli avesse detto del dormir del sonno.
14Allora adunque Gesù disse loro apertamente: Lazaro è morto.
15E per voi, io mi rallegro che io non v'era, acciocchè crediate; ma andiamo a lui.
16Laonde Toma, detto Didimo, disse a' discepoli, suoi compagni: Andiamo ancor noi, acciocchè muoiamo con lui.
17Gesù adunque, venuto, trovò che Lazaro era già da quattro giorni nel monumento.
18Or Betania era vicin di Gerusalemme intorno a quindici stadi.
19E molti dei Giudei eran venuti a Marta, e Maria, per consolarle del lor fratello.
20Marta adunque, come udì che Gesù veniva, gli andò incontro, ma Maria sedeva in casa.
21E Marta disse a Gesù: Signore, se tu fossi stato qui, il mio fratello non sarebbe morto.
22Ma pure, io so ancora al presente che tutto ciò che tu chiederai a Dio, egli te lo darà.
23Gesù le disse: Il tuo fratello risusciterà.
24Marta gli disse: Io so ch'egli risusciterà nella risurrezione, nell'ultimo giorno.
25Gesù le disse: Io son la risurrezione e la vita; chiunque crede in me, benchè sia morto, viverà.
26E chiunque vive, e crede in me, non morrà giammai in eterno. Credi tu questo?
27Ella gli disse: Sì, Signore; io credo che tu sei il Cristo, il Figliuol di Dio, che avea da venire al mondo.
28E, detto questo, se ne andò, e chiamò di nascosto Maria, sua sorella, dicendo: Il Maestro è qui, e ti chiama.
29Essa, come ebbe ciò udito, si levò prestamente, e venne a lui.
30(Or Gesù non era ancor giunto nel castello; ma era nel luogo ove Marta l'avea incontrato.)
31Laonde i Giudei ch'eran con lei in casa, e la consolavano, veggendo che Maria s'era levata in fretta, ed era uscita fuori, la seguitarono, dicendo: Ella se ne va al monumento, per pianger quivi.
32Maria adunque, quando fu venuta là ove era Gesù, vedutolo, gli si gittò ai piedi, dicendogli: Signore, se tu fossi stato qui, il mio fratello non sarebbe morto.
33Gesù adunque, come vide che ella, e i Giudei ch'eran venuti con lei, piangevano, fremè nello spirito, e si conturbò.
34E disse: Ove l'avete voi posto? Essi gli dissero: Signore, vieni, e vedi.
35E Gesù lagrimò.
36Laonde i Giudei dicevano: Ecco, come l'amava!
37Ma alcuni di loro dissero: Non poteva costui, che aperse gli occhi al cieco, fare ancora che costui non morisse?
38Laonde Gesù, fremendo di nuovo in sè stesso, venne al monumento; or quello era una grotta, e v'era una pietra posta disopra.
39E Gesù disse: Togliete via la pietra. Ma Marta, la sorella del morto, disse: Signore, egli pute già; perciocchè egli è morto già da quattro giorni.
40Gesù le disse: Non t'ho io detto che, se tu credi, tu vedrai la gloria di Dio?
41Essi adunque tolsero via la pietra dal luogo ove il morto giaceva. E Gesù, levati in alto gli occhi, disse: Padre, io ti ringrazio che tu mi hai esaudito.
42Or ben sapeva io che tu sempre mi esaudisci; ma io ho detto ciò per la moltitudine qui presente, acciocchè credano che tu mi hai mandato.
43E detto questo, gridò con gran voce: Lazaro, vieni fuori.
44E il morto uscì, avendo le mani e i piedi fasciati, e la faccia involta in uno sciugatoio. Gesù disse loro: Scioglietelo, e lasciatelo andare.
45Laonde molti de' Giudei che eran venuti a Maria, vedute tutte le cose che Gesù avea fatte, credettero in lui.
46MA alcuni di loro andarono a' Farisei, e disser loro le cose che Gesù avea fatte.
47E perciò i principali sacerdoti, e i Farisei, raunarono il concistoro, e dicevano: Che facciamo? quest'uomo fa molti miracoli.
48Se noi lo lasciamo così, tutti crederanno in lui, e i Romani verranno, e distruggeranno e il nostro luogo, e la nostra nazione.
49Ed un di loro, cioè Caiafa, ch'era sommo sacerdote di quell'anno, disse loro: Voi non avete alcun conoscimento;
50e non considerate ch'egli ci giova che un uomo muoia per lo popolo, e che tutta la nazione non perisca.
51Or egli non disse questo da sè stesso; ma, essendo sommo sacerdote di quell'anno, profetizzò che Gesù morrebbe per la nazione;
52e non solo per quella nazione, ma ancora per raccogliere in uno i figliuoli di Dio dispersi.
53Da quel giorno adunque presero insieme consiglio d'ucciderlo.
54Laonde Gesù non andava più apertamente attorno tra i Giudei; ma se ne andò di là nella contrada vicina del deserto, in una città detta Efraim, e quivi se ne stava co' suoi discepoli.
55Or la pasqua de' Giudei era vicina; e molti di quella contrada salirono in Gerusalemme, innanzi la pasqua, per purificarsi.
56Cercavano adunque Gesù; ed essendo nel tempio, dicevano gli uni agli altri: Che vi par egli? non verrà egli alla festa?
57Or i principali sacerdoti, e i Farisei avean dato ordine che, se alcuno sapeva ove egli fosse, lo significasse, acciocchè lo pigliassero.

1ESTABA entonces enfermo uno llamado Lázaro, de Bethania, la aldea de María y de Marta su hermana.
2(Y María, cuyo hermano Lázaro estaba enfermo, era la que ungió al Señor con ungüento, y limpió sus pies con sus cabellos.)
3Enviaron, pues, sus hermanas á él, diciendo: Señor, he aquí, el que amas está enfermo.
4Y oyéndolo Jesús, dijo: Esta enfermedad no es para muerte, mas por gloria de Dios, para que el Hijo de Dios sea glorificado por ella.
5Y amaba Jesús á Marta, y á su hermana, y á Lázaro.
6Como oyó pues que estaba enfermo, quedóse aún dos días en aquel lugar donde estaba.
7Luego, después de esto, dijo á los discípulos: Vamos á Judea otra vez.
8Dícenle los discípulos: Rabbí, ahora procuraban los Judíos apedrearte, ¿y otra vez vas allá?
9Respondió Jesús: ¿No tiene el día doce horas? El que anduviere de día, no tropieza, porque ve la luz de este mundo.
10Mas el que anduviere de noche, tropieza, porque no hay luz en él.
11Dicho esto, díceles después: Lázaro nuestro amigo duerme; mas voy á despertarle del sueño.
12Dijeron entonces sus discípulos: Señor, si duerme, salvo estará.
13Mas esto decía Jesús de la muerte de él: y ellos pensaron que hablaba del reposar del sueño.
14Entonces, pues, Jesús les dijo claramente: Lázaro es muerto;
15Y huélgome por vosotros, que yo no haya estado allí, para que creáis: mas vamos á él.
16Dijo entonces Tomás, el que se dice el Dídimo, á sus condiscípulos: Vamos también nosotros, para que muramos con él.
17Vino pues Jesús, y halló que había ya cuatro días que estaba en el sepulcro.
18Y Bethania estaba cerca de Jerusalem, como quince estadios;
19Y muchos de los Judíos habían venido á Marta y á María, á consolarlas de su hermano.
20Entonces Marta, como oyó que Jesús venía, salió á encontrarle; mas María se estuvo en casa.
21Y Marta dijo á Jesús: Señor, si hubieses estado aquí, mi hermano no fuera muerto;
22Mas también sé ahora, que todo lo que pidieres de Dios, te dará Dios.
23Dícele Jesús: Resucitará tu hermano.
24Marta le dice: Yo sé que resucitará en la resurrección en el día postrero.
25Dícele Jesús: Yo soy la resurrección y la vida: el que cree en mí, aunque esté muerto, vivirá.
26Y todo aquel que vive y cree en mí, no morirá eternamente. ¿Crees esto?
27Dícele: Sí, Señor; yo he creído que tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios, que has venido al mundo.
28Y esto dicho, fuése, y llamó en secreto á María su hermana, diciendo: El Maestro está aquí y te llama.
29Ella, como lo oyó, levántase prestamente y viene á él.
30(Que aun no había llegado Jesús á la aldea, mas estaba en aquel lugar donde Marta le había encontrado.)
31Entonces los Judíos que estaban en casa con ella, y la consolaban, como vieron que María se había levantado prestamente, y había salido, siguiéronla, diciendo: Va al sepulcro á llorar allí.
32Mas María, como vino donde estaba Jesús, viéndole, derribóse á sus pies, diciéndole: Señor, si hubieras estado aquí, no fuera muerto mi hermano.
33Jesús entonces, como la vió llorando, y á los Judíos que habían venido juntamente con ella llorando, se conmovió en espíritu, y turbóse,
34Y dijo: ¿Dónde le pusisteis? Dícenle: Señor, ven, y ve.
35Y lloró Jesús.
36Dijeron entonces los Judíos: Mirad cómo le amaba.
37Y algunos de ellos dijeron: ¿No podía éste que abrió los ojos al ciego, hacer que éste no muriera?
38Y Jesús, conmoviéndose otra vez en sí mismo, vino al sepulcro. Era una cueva, la cual tenía una piedra encima.
39Dice Jesús: Quitad la piedra. Marta, la hermana del que se había muerto, le dice: Señor, hiede ya, que es de cuatro días.
40Jesús le dice: ¿No te he dicho que, si creyeres, verás la gloria de Dios?
41Entonces quitaron la piedra de donde el muerto había sido puesto. Y Jesús, alzando los ojos arriba, dijo: Padre, gracias te doy que me has oído.
42Que yo sabía que siempre me oyes; mas por causa de la compañía que está alrededor, lo dije, para que crean que tú me has enviado.
43Y habiendo dicho estas cosas, clamó á gran voz: Lázaro, ven fuera.
44Y el que había estado muerto, salió, atadas las manos y los pies con vendas; y su rostro estaba envuelto en un sudario. Díceles Jesús: Desatadle, y dejadle ir.
45Entonces muchos de los Judíos que habían venido á María, y habían visto lo que había hecho Jesús, creyeron en él.
46Mas algunos de ellos fueron á los Fariseos, y dijéronles lo que Jesús había hecho.
47Entonces los pontífices y los Fariseos juntaron concilio, y decían: ¿Qué hacemos? porque este hombre hace muchas señales.
48Si le dejamos así, todos creerán en él: y vendrán los Romanos, y quitarán nuestro lugar y la nación.
49Y Caifás, uno de ellos, sumo pontífice de aquel año, les dijo: Vosotros no sabéis nada;
50Ni pensáis que nos conviene que un hombre muera por el pueblo, y no que toda la nación se pierda.
51Mas esto no lo dijo de sí mismo; sino que, como era el sumo pontífice de aquel año, profetizó que Jesús había de morir por la nación:
52Y no solamente por aquella nación, mas también para que juntase en uno los hijos de Dios que estaban derramados.
53Así que, desde aquel día consultaban juntos de matarle.
54Por tanto, Jesús ya no andaba manifiestamente entre los Judíos; mas fuése de allí á la tierra que está junto al desierto, á una ciudad que se llama Ephraim: y estábase allí con sus discípulos.
55Y la Pascua de los Judíos estaba cerca: y muchos subieron de aquella tierra á Jerusalem antes de la Pascua, para purificarse;
56Y buscaban á Jesús, y hablaban los unos con los otros estando en el templo: ¿Qué os parece, que no vendrá á la fiesta?
57Y los pontífices y los Fariseos habían dado mandamiento, que si alguno supiese dónde estuviera, lo manifestase, para que le prendiesen.

1Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.
2(It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)
3Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.
4When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.
5Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.
6When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.
7Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judæa again.
8His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?
9Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.
10But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.
11These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.
12Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.
13Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.
14Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.
15And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.
16Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.
17Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.
18Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:
19And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.
20Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.
21Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
22But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.
23Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.
24Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.
25Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
26And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?
27She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.
28And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.
29As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him.
30Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.
31The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there.
32Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
33When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,
34And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.
35Jesus wept.
36Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!
37And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?
38Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.
39Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.
40Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?
41Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.
42And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.
43And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.
44And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.
45Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.
46But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.
47Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.
48If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.
49And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,
50Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.
51And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;
52And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.
53Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.
54Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.
55And the Jews’ passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves.
56Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?
57Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.

1Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus from Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister, Martha.
2It was that Mary who had anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.
3The sisters therefore sent to him, saying, “Lord, behold, he for whom you have great affection is sick.”
4But when Jesus heard it, he said, “This sickness is not to death, but for the glory of God, that God’s Son may be glorified by it.”
5Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.
6When therefore he heard that he was sick, he stayed two days in the place where he was.
7Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let’s go into Judea again.”
8The disciples asked him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just trying to stone you. Are you going there again?”
9Jesus answered, “Aren’t there twelve hours of daylight? If a man walks in the day, he doesn’t stumble, because he sees the light of this world.
10But if a man walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light isn’t in him.”
11He said these things, and after that, he said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going so that I may awake him out of sleep.”
12The disciples therefore said, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.”
13Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he spoke of taking rest in sleep.
14So Jesus said to them plainly then, “Lazarus is dead.
15I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe. Nevertheless, let’s go to him.”
16Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s also go, that we may die with him.”
17So when Jesus came, he found that he had been in the tomb four days already.
18Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia away.
19Many of the Jews had joined the women around Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother.
20Then when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary stayed in the house.
21Therefore Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.
22Even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you.”
23Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”
24Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”
25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies.
26Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
27She said to him, “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, God’s Son, he who comes into the world.”
28When she had said this, she went away and called Mary, her sister, secretly, saying, “The Teacher is here and is calling you.”
29When she heard this, she arose quickly and went to him.
30Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha met him.
31Then the Jews who were with her in the house and were consoling her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, “She is going to the tomb to weep there.”
32Therefore when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.”
33When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit and was troubled,
34and said, “Where have you laid him?” They told him, “Lord, come and see.”
35Jesus wept.
36The Jews therefore said, “See how much affection he had for him!”
37Some of them said, “Couldn’t this man, who opened the eyes of him who was blind, have also kept this man from dying?”
38Jesus therefore, again groaning in himself, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it.
39Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to him, “Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.”
40Jesus said to her, “Didn’t I tell you that if you believed, you would see God’s glory?”
41So they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you listened to me.
42I know that you always listen to me, but because of the multitude standing around I said this, that they may believe that you sent me.”
43When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”
44He who was dead came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Free him, and let him go.”
45Therefore many of the Jews who came to Mary and saw what Jesus did believed in him.
46But some of them went away to the Pharisees and told them the things which Jesus had done.
47The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, “What are we doing? For this man does many signs.
48If we leave him alone like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.”
49But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all,
50nor do you consider that it is advantageous for us that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish.”
51Now he didn’t say this of himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation,
52and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.
53So from that day forward they took counsel that they might put him to death.
54Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but departed from there into the country near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim. He stayed there with his disciples.
55Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand. Many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves.
56Then they sought for Jesus and spoke with one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think—that he isn’t coming to the feast at all?”
57Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had commanded that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it, that they might seize him.
