1DOPO queste cose v'era una festa de' Giudei; e Gesù salì in Gerusalemme.
2Or in Gerusalemme, presso della porta delle pecore, v'è una pescina, detta in Ebreo Betesda, che ha cinque portici.
3In essi giaceva gran moltitudine d'infermi, di ciechi, di zoppi, di secchi, aspettando il movimento dell'acqua.
4Perciocchè di tempo in tempo un angelo scendeva nella pescina, ed intorbidava l'acqua; e il primo che vi entrava, dopo l'intorbidamento dell'acqua, era sanato, di qualunque malattia egli fosse tenuto.
5Or quivi era un certo uomo, ch'era stato infermo trentotto anni.
6Gesù, veduto costui giacere, e sapendo che già lungo tempo era stato infermo, gli disse: Vuoi tu esser sanato?
7L'infermo gli rispose: Signore, io non ho alcuno che mi metta nella pescina, quando l'acqua è intorbidata; e quando io vi vengo, un altro vi scende prima di me.
8Gesù gli disse: Levati, togli il tuo letticello, e cammina.
9E in quello stante quell'uomo fu sanato, e tolse il suo letticello, e camminava. Or in quel giorno era sabato.
10Laonde i Giudei dissero a colui ch'era stato sanato: Egli è sabato; non ti è lecito di togliere il tuo letticello.
11Egli rispose loro: Colui che mi ha sanato mi ha detto: Togli il tuo letticello, e cammina.
12Ed essi gli domandarono: Chi è quell'uomo che ti ha detto: Togli il tuo letticello, e cammina?
13Or colui ch'era stato sanato non sapeva chi egli fosse; perciocchè Gesù s'era sottratto dalla moltitudine ch'era in quel luogo.
14Di poi Gesù lo trovò nel tempio, e gli disse: Ecco, tu sei stato sanato; non peccar più, che peggio non ti avvenga.
15Quell'uomo se ne andò, e rapportò ai Giudei che Gesù era quel che l'avea sanato.
16E PERCIÒ i Giudei perseguivano Gesù, e cercavano d'ucciderlo, perciocchè avea fatte quelle cose in sabato.
17Ma Gesù rispose loro: Il Padre mio opera infino ad ora, ed io ancora opero.
18Perciò adunque i Giudei cercavano vie più d'ucciderlo, perciocchè non solo violava il sabato, ma ancora diceva Iddio esser suo Padre, facendosi uguale a Dio.
19Laonde Gesù rispose, e disse loro: In verità, in verità, io vi dico, che il Figliuolo non può far nulla da sè stesso, ma fa ciò che vede fare al Padre, perciocchè le cose ch'esso fa, il Figliuolo le fa anch'egli simigliantemente.
20Poichè il Padre ama il Figliuolo, e gli mostra tutte le cose ch'egli fa; ed anche gli mostrerà opere maggiori di queste, acciocchè voi vi maravigliate.
21Perciocchè, siccome il Padre suscita i morti, e li vivifica, così ancora il Figliuolo vivifica coloro ch'egli vuole.
22Poichè il Padre non giudica alcuno, ma ha dato tutto il giudicio al Figliuolo;
23acciocchè tutti onorino il Figliuolo, come onorano il Padre; chi non onora il Figliuolo, non onora il Padre che l'ha mandato.
24In verità, in verità, io vi dico, che chi ode la mia parola, e crede a colui che mi ha mandato, ha vita eterna, e non viene in giudicio; anzi è passato dalla morte alla vita.
25In verità, in verità, io vi dico, che l'ora viene, e già al presente è, che i morti udiranno la voce del Figliuol di Dio, e coloro che l'avranno udita viveranno.
26Perciocchè, siccome il Padre ha vita in sè stesso,
27così ha dato ancora al Figliuolo d'aver vita in sè stesso; e gli ha data podestà eziandio di far giudicio, in quanto egli è Figliuol d'uomo.
28Non vi maravigliate di questo; perciocchè l'ora viene, che tutti coloro che son ne' monumenti udiranno la sua voce;
29ed usciranno, coloro che avranno fatto bene, in risurrezion di vita; e coloro che avranno fatto male, in risurrezion di condannazione.
30Io non posso da me stesso far cosa alcuna; io giudico secondo che io odo; e il mio giudicio è giusto, perciocchè io non cerco la mia volontà, me la volontà del Padre che mi ha mandato.
31Se io testimonio di me stesso, la mia testimonianza non è verace.
32V'è un altro che rende testimonianza di me, ed io so che la testimonianza ch'egli rende di me è verace.
33Voi mandaste a Giovanni, ed egli rendette testimonianza alla verità.
34Or io non prendo testimonianza da uomo alcuno, ma dico queste cose, acciocchè siate salvati.
35Esso era una lampana ardente, e lucente; e voi volentieri gioiste, per un breve tempo, alla sua luce.
36Ma io ho la testimonianza maggiore di quella di Giovanni, poichè le opere che il Padre mi ha date ad adempiere, quelle opere, dico, le quali io fo, testimoniano di me, che il Padre mio mi ha mandato.
37Ed anche il Padre stesso che mi ha mandato ha testimoniato di me; voi non udiste giammai la sua voce, nè vedeste la sua sembianza;
38e non avete la sua parola dimorante in voi, perchè non credete a colui ch'egli ha mandato.
39Investigate le scritture, perciocchè voi pensate per esse aver vita eterna; ed esse son quelle che testimoniano di me.
40Ma voi non volete venire a me, acciocchè abbiate vita.
41Io non prendo gloria dagli uomini.
42Ma io vi conosco, che non avete l'amor di Dio in voi.
43Io son venuto nel nome del Padre mio, e voi non mi ricevete; se un altro viene nel suo proprio nome, quello riceverete.
44Come potete voi credere, poichè prendete gloria gli uni dagli altri, e non cercate la gloria che viene da un solo Dio?
45Non pensate che io vi accusi appo il Padre; v'è chi vi accusa, cioè Mosè, nel qual voi avete riposta la vostra speranza.
46Perciocchè, se voi credeste a Mosè, credereste ancora a me; poichè egli ha scritto di me.
47Ma se non credete agli scritti d'esso, come crederete alle mie parole?

1DESPUÉS de estas cosas, era un día de fiesta de los Judíos, y subió Jesús á Jerusalem.
2Y hay en Jerusalem á la puerta del ganado un estanque, que en hebraico es llamado Bethesda, el cual tiene cinco portales.
3En éstos yacía multitud de enfermos, ciegos, cojos, secos, que estaban esperando el movimiento del agua.
4Porque un ángel descendía á cierto tiempo al estanque, y revolvía el agua; y el que primero descendía en el estanque después del movimiento del agua, era sano de cualquier enfermedad que tuviese.
5Y estaba allí un hombre que había treinta y ocho años que estaba enfermo.
6Como Jesús vió á éste echado, y entendió que ya había mucho tiempo, dícele: ¿Quieres ser sano?
7Señor, le respondió el enfermo, no tengo hombre que me meta en el estanque cuando el agua fuere revuelta; porque entre tanto que yo vengo, otro antes de mí ha descendido.
8Dícele Jesús: Levántate, toma tu lecho, y anda.
9Y luego aquel hombre fué sano, y tomó su lecho, é íbase. Y era sábado aquel día.
10Entonces los Judíos decían á aquel que había sido sanado: Sábado es: no te es lícito llevar tu lecho.
11Respondióles: El que me sanó, él mismo me dijo: Toma tu lecho y anda.
12Preguntáronle entonces: ¿Quién es el que te dijo: Toma tu lecho y anda?
13Y el que había sido sanado, no sabía quién fuese; porque Jesús se había apartado de la gente que estaba en aquel lugar.
14Después le halló Jesús en el templo, y díjole: He aquí, has sido sanado; no peques más, porque no te venga alguna cosa peor.
15El se fué, y dió aviso á los Judíos, que Jesús era el que le había sanado.
16Y por esta causa los Judíos perseguían á Jesús, y procuraban matarle, porque hacía estas cosas en sábado.
17Y Jesús les respondió: Mi Padre hasta ahora obra, y yo obro.
18Entonces, por tanto, más procuraban los Judíos matarle, porque no sólo quebrantaba el sábado, sino que también á su Padre llamaba Dios, haciéndose igual á Dios.
19Respondió entonces Jesús, y díjoles: De cierto, de cierto os digo: No puede el Hijo hacer nada de sí mismo, sino lo que viere hacer al Padre: porque todo lo que él hace, esto también hace el Hijo juntamente.
20Porque el Padre ama al Hijo, y le muestra todas las cosas que él hace; y mayores obras que éstas le mostrará, de suerte que vosotros os maravilléis.
21Porque como el Padre levanta los muertos, y les da vida, así también el Hijo á los que quiere da vida.
22Porque el Padre á nadie juzga, mas todo el juicio dió al Hijo;
23Para que todos honren al Hijo como honran al Padre. El que no honra al Hijo, no honra al Padre que le envió.
24De cierto, de cierto os digo: El que oye mi palabra, y cree al que me ha enviado, tiene vida eterna; y no vendrá á condenación, mas pasó de muerte á vida.
25De cierto, de cierto os digo: Vendrá hora, y ahora es, cuando los muertos oirán la voz del Hijo de Dios: y los que oyeren vivirán.
26Porque como el Padre tiene vida en sí mismo, así dió también al Hijo que tuviese vida en sí mismo:
27Y también le dió poder de hacer juicio, en cuanto es el Hijo del hombre.
28No os maravilléis de esto; porque vendrá hora, cuando todos los que están en los sepulcros oirán su voz;
29Y los que hicieron bien, saldrán á resurrección de vida; mas los que hicieron mal, á resurrección de condenación.
30No puedo yo de mí mismo hacer nada: como oigo, juzgo: y mi juicio es justo; porque no busco mi voluntad, mas la voluntad del que me envió, del Padre.
31Si yo doy testimonio de mí mismo, mi testimonio no es verdadero.
32Otro es el que da testimonio de mí; y sé que el testimonio que da de mí, es verdadero.
33Vosotros enviasteis á Juan, y él dió testimonio á la verdad.
34Empero yo no tomo el testimonio de hombre; mas digo esto, para que vosotros seáis salvos.
35El era antorcha que ardía y alumbraba: y vosotros quisisteis recrearos por un poco á su luz.
36Mas yo tengo mayor testimonio que el de Juan: porque las obras que el Padre me dió que cumpliese, las mismas obras que yo hago, dan testimonio de mí, que el Padre me haya enviado.
37Y el que me envió, el Padre, él ha dado testimonio de mí. Ni nunca habéis oído su voz, ni habéis visto su parecer.
38Ni tenéis su palabra permanente en vosotros; porque al que él envió, á éste vosotros no creéis.
39Escudriñad las Escrituras, porque á vosotros os parece que en ellas tenéis la vida eterna; y ellas son las que dan testimonio de mí.
40Y no queréis venir á mí, para que tengáis vida.
41Gloria de los hombres no recibo.
42Mas yo os conozco, que no tenéis amor de Dios en vosotros.
43Yo he venido en nombre de mi Padre, y no me recibís: si otro viniere en su propio nombre, á aquél recibiréis.
44¿Cómo podéis vosotros creer, pues tomáis la gloria los unos de los otros, y no buscáis la gloria que de sólo Dios viene?
45No penséis que yo os tengo de acusar delante del Padre; hay quien os acusa, Moisés, en quien vosotros esperáis.
46Porque si vosotros creyeseis á Moisés, creeríais á mí; porque de mí escribió él.
47Y si á sus escritos no creéis, ¿cómo creeréis á mis palabras?

1After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
2Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches.
3In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.
4For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.
5And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.
6When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?
7The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.
8Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.
9And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.
10The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.
11He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.
12Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?
13And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place.
14Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.
15The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole.
16And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.
17But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.
18Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.
19Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.
20For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.
21For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.
22For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:
23That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.
24Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
25Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.
26For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;
27And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.
28Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,
29And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.
30I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.
31If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.
32There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.
33Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth.
34But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved.
35He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.
36But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.
37And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.
38And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.
39Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
40And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.
41I receive not honour from men.
42But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.
43I am come in my Father’s name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.
44How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?
45Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust.
46For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.
47But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?

1After these things, there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
2Now in Jerusalem by the sheep gate, there is a pool, which is called in Hebrew, “Bethesda”, having five porches.
3In these lay a great multitude of those who were sick, blind, lame, or paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water;
4for an angel went down at certain times into the pool and stirred up the water. Whoever stepped in first after the stirring of the water was healed of whatever disease he had.
5A certain man was there who had been sick for thirty-eight years.
6When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had been sick for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to be made well?”
7The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I’m coming, another steps down before me.”
8Jesus said to him, “Arise, take up your mat, and walk.”
9Immediately, the man was made well, and took up his mat and walked. Now that day was a Sabbath.
10So the Jews said to him who was cured, “It is the Sabbath. It is not lawful for you to carry the mat.”
11He answered them, “He who made me well said to me, ‘Take up your mat and walk.’ ”
12Then they asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take up your mat and walk’?”
13But he who was healed didn’t know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, a crowd being in the place.
14Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “Behold, you are made well. Sin no more, so that nothing worse happens to you.”
15The man went away, and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.
16For this cause the Jews persecuted Jesus and sought to kill him, because he did these things on the Sabbath.
17But Jesus answered them, “My Father is still working, so I am working, too.”
18For this cause therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill him, because he not only broke the Sabbath, but also called God his own Father, making himself equal with God.
19Jesus therefore answered them, “Most certainly, I tell you, the Son can do nothing of himself, but what he sees the Father doing. For whatever things he does, these the Son also does likewise.
20For the Father has affection for the Son, and shows him all things that he himself does. He will show him greater works than these, that you may marvel.
21For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom he desires.
22For the Father judges no one, but he has given all judgment to the Son,
23that all may honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He who doesn’t honor the Son doesn’t honor the Father who sent him.
24“Most certainly I tell you, he who hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life, and doesn’t come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.
25Most certainly I tell you, the hour comes, and now is, when the dead will hear the Son of God’s voice; and those who hear will live.
26For as the Father has life in himself, even so he gave to the Son also to have life in himself.
27He also gave him authority to execute judgment, because he is a son of man.
28Don’t marvel at this, for the hour comes in which all who are in the tombs will hear his voice
29and will come out; those who have done good, to the resurrection of life; and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of judgment.
30I can of myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and my judgment is righteous, because I don’t seek my own will, but the will of my Father who sent me.
31“If I testify about myself, my witness is not valid.
32It is another who testifies about me. I know that the testimony which he testifies about me is true.
33You have sent to John, and he has testified to the truth.
34But the testimony which I receive is not from man. However, I say these things that you may be saved.
35He was the burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.
36But the testimony which I have is greater than that of John; for the works which the Father gave me to accomplish, the very works that I do, testify about me, that the Father has sent me.
37The Father himself, who sent me, has testified about me. You have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his form.
38You don’t have his word living in you, because you don’t believe him whom he sent.
39“You search the Scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life; and these are they which testify about me.
40Yet you will not come to me, that you may have life.
41I don’t receive glory from men.
42But I know you, that you don’t have God’s love in yourselves.
43I have come in my Father’s name, and you don’t receive me. If another comes in his own name, you will receive him.
44How can you believe, who receive glory from one another, and you don’t seek the glory that comes from the only God?
45“Don’t think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you, even Moses, on whom you have set your hope.
46For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote about me.
47But if you don’t believe his writings, how will you believe my words?”
