1Après ces choses Jésus s’en alla de l’autre côté de la mer de Galilée, [qui est la mer] de Tibérias.
2Et une grande foule le suivit, parce qu’ils voyaient les miracles qu’il faisait sur ceux qui étaient malades.
3Et Jésus monta sur la montagne, et s’assit là avec ses disciples.
4Or la Pâque, la fête des Juifs, était proche.
5Jésus donc, ayant levé les yeux, et voyant qu’une grande foule venait à lui, dit à Philippe : D’où achèterons-nous des pains, afin que ceux-ci mangent ?
6Mais il disait cela pour l’éprouver, car lui savait ce qu’il allait faire.
7Philippe lui répondit : Pour 200 deniers de pain ne leur suffirait pas, pour que chacun en reçoive quelque peu.
8L’un de ses disciples, André, le frère de Simon Pierre, lui dit :
9Il y a ici un petit garçon qui a cinq pains d’orge et deux poissons ; mais qu’est-ce que cela pour tant de monde ?
10Et Jésus dit : Faites asseoir les gens (or il y avait beaucoup d’herbe en ce lieu-là). Les hommes donc s’assirent, au nombre d’environ 5 000.
11Et Jésus prit les pains ; et ayant rendu grâces, il les distribua à ceux qui étaient assis ; de même aussi des poissons, autant qu’ils en voulaient.
12Et après qu’ils furent rassasiés, il dit à ses disciples : Amassez les morceaux qui sont de reste, afin que rien ne soit perdu.
13Ils les amassèrent donc et remplirent douze paniers des morceaux qui étaient de reste des cinq pains d’orge, lorsqu’ils eurent mangé.
14Les hommes donc, ayant vu le miracle que Jésus avait fait, disaient : Celui-ci est véritablement le prophète qui vient dans le monde.
15Jésus donc, sachant qu’ils allaient venir et l’enlever afin de le faire roi, se retira encore sur la montagne, lui tout seul.
16Et quand le soir fut venu, ses disciples descendirent à la mer.
17Et étant montés sur un bateau, ils allèrent de l’autre côté de la mer, à Capernaüm. Et il faisait déjà nuit, et Jésus n’était pas venu à eux.
18Et la mer s’élevait par un grand vent qui soufflait.
19Ayant donc ramé environ 25 ou 30 stades, ils voient Jésus marchant sur la mer et s’approchant du bateau ; et ils furent saisis de peur.
20Mais il leur dit : C’est moi, n’ayez point de peur.
21Ils étaient donc tout disposés à le recevoir dans le bateau ; et aussitôt le bateau prit terre au lieu où ils allaient.
22Le lendemain, la foule qui était de l’autre côté de la mer, voyant qu’il n’y avait point là d’autre petit bateau que celui-là sur lequel ses disciples étaient montés, et que Jésus n’était pas entré avec ses disciples dans le bateau, mais que ses disciples s’en étaient allés seuls
23(mais d’autres petits bateaux étaient venus de Tibérias, près du lieu où ils avaient mangé le pain, après que le Seigneur eut rendu grâces) ;
24– lors donc que la foule vit que Jésus n’était point là, ni ses disciples, ils montèrent eux-mêmes sur les bateaux, et vinrent à Capernaüm, cherchant Jésus.
25Et l’ayant trouvé de l’autre côté de la mer, ils lui dirent : Rabbi, quand es-tu venu ici ?
26Jésus leur répondit et dit : En vérité, en vérité, je vous dis : Vous me cherchez, non parce que vous avez vu des miracles, mais parce que vous avez mangé des pains et que vous avez été rassasiés.
27Travaillez, non point pour la viande qui périt, mais pour la viande qui demeure jusque dans la vie éternelle, laquelle le fils de l’homme vous donnera ; car c’est lui que le Père, Dieu, a scellé.
28Ils lui dirent donc : Que ferons-nous pour faire les œuvres de Dieu ?
29Jésus répondit et leur dit : C’est ici l’œuvre de Dieu, que vous croyiez en celui qu’il a envoyé.
30Ils lui dirent donc : Quel miracle fais-tu donc, toi, afin que nous le voyions, et que nous te croyions ? Quelle œuvre fais-tu ?
31Nos pères ont mangé la manne au désert, ainsi qu’il est écrit : « Il leur a donné à manger du pain venant du ciel ».
32Jésus donc leur dit : En vérité, en vérité, je vous dis : Moïse ne vous a pas donné le pain qui vient du ciel, mais mon Père vous donne le véritable pain qui vient du ciel.
33Car le pain de Dieu est celui qui descend du ciel, et qui donne la vie au monde.
34Ils lui dirent donc : Seigneur, donne-nous toujours ce pain-là.
35Et Jésus leur dit : Moi, je suis le pain de vie. Celui qui vient à moi n’aura jamais faim ; et celui qui croit en moi n’aura jamais soif.
36Mais je vous ai dit qu’aussi vous m’avez vu, et vous ne croyez pas.
37Tout ce que le Père me donne viendra à moi ; et je ne mettrai point dehors celui qui vient à moi ;
38car je suis descendu du ciel, non pour faire ma volonté, mais la volonté de celui qui m’a envoyé.
39Or c’est ici la volonté de celui qui m’a envoyé : que je ne perde rien de tout ce qu’il m’a donné, mais que je le ressuscite au dernier jour.
40Car c’est ici la volonté de mon Père : que quiconque discerne le Fils et croit en lui, ait la vie éternelle ; et moi, je le ressusciterai au dernier jour.
41Les Juifs donc murmuraient contre lui, parce qu’il avait dit : Moi, je suis le pain descendu du ciel ;
42et ils disaient : N’est-ce pas ici Jésus, le fils de Joseph, duquel nous connaissons le père et la mère ? Comment donc celui-ci dit-il : Je suis descendu du ciel ?
43Jésus donc répondit et leur dit : Ne murmurez pas entre vous.
44Nul ne peut venir à moi, à moins que le Père qui m’a envoyé ne le tire ; et moi, je le ressusciterai au dernier jour.
45Il est écrit dans les prophètes : « Et ils seront tous enseignés de Dieu ». Quiconque a entendu le Père et a appris [de lui], vient à moi.
46Non pas que quelqu’un ait vu le Père, sinon celui qui est de Dieu ; celui-là a vu le Père.
47En vérité, en vérité, je vous dis : Celui qui croit [en moi], a la vie éternelle.
48Moi, je suis le pain de vie.
49Vos pères ont mangé la manne au désert, et sont morts ;
50c’est ici le pain qui descend du ciel, afin que quelqu’un en mange et ne meure pas.
51Moi, je suis le pain vivant qui est descendu du ciel : si quelqu’un mange de ce pain, il vivra éternellement ; or le pain aussi que moi je donnerai, c’est ma chair, laquelle moi je donnerai pour la vie du monde.
52Les Juifs disputaient donc entre eux, disant : Comment celui-ci peut-il nous donner sa chair à manger ?
53Jésus donc leur dit : En vérité, en vérité, je vous dis : Si vous ne mangez la chair du fils de l’homme et ne buvez son sang, vous n’avez pas la vie en vous-mêmes.
54Celui qui mange ma chair et qui boit mon sang a la vie éternelle, et moi, je le ressusciterai au dernier jour.
55Car ma chair est en vérité un aliment, et mon sang est en vérité un breuvage.
56Celui qui mange ma chair et qui boit mon sang demeure en moi et moi en lui.
57Comme le Père [qui est] vivant m’a envoyé, et que moi, je vis à cause du Père, de même celui qui me mangera, celui-là aussi vivra à cause de moi.
58C’est ici le pain qui est descendu du ciel, non pas comme les pères mangèrent et moururent : celui qui mangera ce pain vivra éternellement.
59Il dit ces choses dans la synagogue, enseignant à Capernaüm.
60Plusieurs donc de ses disciples, l’ayant entendu, dirent : Cette parole est dure ; qui peut l’entendre ?
61Et Jésus, sachant en lui-même que ses disciples murmuraient là-dessus, leur dit : Ceci vous scandalise-t-il ?
62Si donc vous voyez le fils de l’homme monter où il était auparavant… ?
63C’est l’Esprit qui vivifie ; la chair ne profite de rien : les paroles que moi je vous ai dites sont esprit et sont vie ;
64mais il y en a quelques-uns d’entre vous qui ne croient pas ; car Jésus savait, dès le commencement, qui étaient ceux qui ne croyaient pas, et qui était celui qui le livrerait.
65Et il dit : C’est pour cela que je vous ai dit que nul ne peut venir à moi, à moins qu’il ne lui soit donné du Père.
66Dès lors plusieurs de ses disciples se retirèrent ; et ils ne marchaient plus avec lui.
67Jésus donc dit aux douze : Et vous, voulez-vous aussi vous en aller ?
68Simon Pierre lui répondit : Seigneur, auprès de qui nous en irions-nous ? Tu as les paroles de la vie éternelle ;
69et nous, nous croyons et nous savons que toi, tu es le Saint de Dieu.
70Jésus leur répondit : N’est-ce pas moi qui vous ai choisis, vous, les douze, et l’un d’entre vous est un diable ?
71Or il parlait de Judas Iscariote, [fils] de Simon ; car c’était lui qui allait le livrer, lui qui était l’un des douze.

1PASADAS estas cosas, fuése Jesús de la otra parte de la mar de Galilea, que es de Tiberias.
2Y seguíale grande multitud, porque veían sus señales que hacía en los enfermos.
3Y subió Jesús á un monte, y se sentó allí con sus discípulos.
4Y estaba cerca la Pascua, la fiesta de los Judíos.
5Y como alzó Jesús los ojos, y vió que había venido á él grande multitud, dice á Felipe: ¿De dónde compraremos pan para que coman éstos?
6Mas esto decía para probarle; porque él sabía lo que había de hacer.
7Respondióle Felipe: Doscientos denarios de pan no les bastarán, para que cada uno de ellos tome un poco.
8Dícele uno de sus discípulos, Andrés, hermano de Simón Pedro:
9Un muchacho está aquí que tiene cinco panes de cebada y dos pececillos; ¿mas qué es esto entre tantos?
10Entonces Jesús dijo: Haced recostar la gente. Y había mucha hierba en aquel lugar: y recostáronse como número de cinco mil varones.
11Y tomó Jesús aquellos panes, y habiendo dado gracias, repartió á los discípulos, y los discípulos á los que estaban recostados: asimismo de los peces, cuanto querían.
12Y como fueron saciados, dijo á sus discípulos: Recoged los pedazos que han quedado, porque no se pierda nada.
13Cogieron pues, é hinchieron doce cestas de pedazos de los cinco panes de cebada, que sobraron á los que habían comido.
14Aquellos hombres entonces, como vieron la señal que Jesús había hecho, decían: Este verdaderamente es el profeta que había de venir al mundo.
15Y entendiendo Jesús que habían de venir para arrebatarle, y hacerle rey, volvió á retirarse al monte, él solo.
16Y como se hizo tarde, descendieron sus discípulos á la mar;
17Y entrando en un barco, venían de la otra parte de la mar hacia Capernaum. Y era ya oscuro, y Jesús no había venido á ellos.
18Y levantábase la mar con un gran viento que soplaba.
19Y como hubieron navegado como veinticinco ó treinta estadios, ven á Jesús que andaba sobre la mar, y se acercaba al barco: y tuvieron miedo.
20Mas él les dijo: Yo soy; no tengáis miedo.
21Ellos entonces gustaron recibirle en el barco: y luego el barco llegó á la tierra donde iban.
22El día siguiente, la gente que estaba de la otra parte de la mar, como vió que no había allí otra navecilla sino una, y que Jesús no había entrado con sus discípulos en ella, sino que sus discípulos se habían ido solos;
23Y que otras navecillas habían arribado de Tiberias junto al lugar donde habían comido el pan después de haber el Señor dado gracias;
24Como vió pues la gente que Jesús no estaba allí, ni sus discípulos, entraron ellos en las navecillas, y vinieron á Capernaum buscando á Jesús.
25Y hallándole de la otra parte de la mar, dijéronle: Rabbí, ¿cuándo llegaste acá?
26Respondióles Jesús, y dijo: De cierto, de cierto os digo, que me buscáis, no porque habéis visto las señales, sino porque comisteis el pan y os hartasteis.
27Trabajad no por la comida que perece, mas por la comida que á vida eterna permanece, la cual el Hijo del hombre os dará: porque á éste señaló el Padre, que es Dios.
28Y dijéronle: ¿Qué haremos para que obremos las obras de Dios?
29Respondió Jesús, y díjoles: Esta es la obra de Dios, que creáis en el que él ha enviado.
30Dijéronle entonces: ¿Qué señal pues haces tú, para que veamos, y te creamos? ¿Qué obras?
31Nuestros padres comieron el maná en el desierto, como está escrito: Pan del cielo les dió á comer.
32Y Jesús les dijo: De cierto, de cierto os digo: No os dió Moisés pan del cielo; mas mi Padre os da el verdadero pan del cielo.
33Porque el pan de Dios es aquel que descendió del cielo y da vida al mundo.
34Y dijéronle: Señor, danos siempre este pan.
35Y Jesús les dijo: Yo soy el pan de vida: el que á mí viene, nunca tendrá hambre; y el que en mí cree, no tendrá sed jamás.
36Mas os he dicho, que aunque me habéis visto, no creéis.
37Todo lo que el Padre me da, vendrá á mí; y al que á mí viene, no le hecho fuera.
38Porque he descendido del cielo, no para hacer mi voluntad, mas la voluntad del que me envió.
39Y esta es la voluntad del que me envió, del Padre: Que todo lo que me diere, no pierda de ello, sino que lo resucite en el día postrero.
40Y esta es la voluntad del que me ha enviado: Que todo aquel que ve al Hijo, y cree en él, tenga vida eterna: y yo le resucitaré en el día postrero.
41Murmuraban entonces de él los Judíos, porque había dicho: Yo soy el pan que descendí del cielo.
42Y decían: ¿No es éste Jesús, el hijo de José, cuyo padre y madre nosotros conocemos? ¿cómo, pues, dice éste: Del cielo he descendido?
43Y Jesús respondió, y díjoles: No murmuréis entre vosotros.
44Ninguno puede venir á mí, si el Padre que me envió no le trajere; y yo le resucitaré en el día postrero.
45Escrito está en los profetas: Y serán todos enseñados de Dios. Así que, todo aquel que oyó del Padre, y aprendió, viene á mí.
46No que alguno haya visto al Padre, sino aquel que vino de Dios, éste ha visto al Padre.
47De cierto, de cierto os digo: El que cree en mí, tiene vida eterna.
48Yo soy el pan de vida.
49Vuestros padres comieron el maná en el desierto, y son muertos.
50Este es el pan que desciende del cielo, para que el que de él comiere, no muera.
51Yo soy el pan vivo que he descendido del cielo: si alguno comiere de este pan, vivirá para siempre; y el pan que yo daré es mi carne, la cual yo daré por la vida del mundo.
52Entonces los Judíos contendían entre sí, diciendo: ¿Cómo puede éste darnos su carne á comer?
53Y Jesús les dijo: De cierto, de cierto os digo: Si no comiereis la carne del Hijo del hombre, y bebiereis su sangre, no tendréis vida en vosotros.
54El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre, tiene vida eterna: y yo le resucitaré en el día postrero.
55Porque mi carne es verdadera comida, y mi sangre es verdadera bebida.
56El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre, en mí permanece, y yo en él.
57Como me envió el Padre viviente, y yo vivo por el Padre, asimismo el que me come, él también vivirá por mí.
58Este es el pan que descendió del cielo: no como vuestros padres comieron el maná, y son muertos: el que come de este pan, vivirá eternamente.
59Estas cosas dijo en la sinagoga, enseñando en Capernaum.
60Y muchos de sus discípulos oyéndolo, dijeron: Dura es esta palabra: ¿quién la puede oir?
61Y sabiendo Jesús en sí mismo que sus discípulos murmuraban de esto, díjoles: ¿Esto os escandaliza?
62¿Pues qué, si viereis al Hijo del hombre que sube donde estaba primero?
63El espíritu es el que da vida; la carne nada aprovecha: las palabras que yo os he hablado, son espíritu, y son vida.
64Mas hay algunos de vosotros que no creen. Porque Jesús desde el principio sabía quiénes eran los que no creían, y quién le había de entregar.
65Y dijo: Por eso os he dicho que ninguno puede venir á mí, si no le fuere dado del Padre.
66Desde esto, muchos de sus discípulos volvieron atrás, y ya no andaban con él.
67Dijo entonces Jesús á los doce: ¿Queréis vosotros iros también?
68Y respondióle Simón Pedro: Señor, ¿á quién iremos? tú tienes palabras de vida eterna.
69Y nosotros creemos y conocemos que tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios viviente.
70Jesús le respondió: ¿No he escogido yo á vosotros doce, y uno de vosotros es diablo?
71Y hablaba de Judas Iscariote, hijo de Simón, porque éste era el que le había de entregar, el cual era uno de los doce.

1After these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias.
2And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he did on them that were diseased.
3And Jesus went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples.
4And the passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh.
5When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?
6And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do.
7Philip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little.
8One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, saith unto him,
9There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?
10And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.
11And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would.
12When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost.
13Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten.
14Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world.
15When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone.
16And when even was now come, his disciples went down unto the sea,
17And entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them.
18And the sea arose by reason of a great wind that blew.
19So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid.
20But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid.
21Then they willingly received him into the ship: and immediately the ship was at the land whither they went.
22The day following, when the people which stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was none other boat there, save that one whereinto his disciples were entered, and that Jesus went not with his disciples into the boat, but that his disciples were gone away alone;
23(Howbeit there came other boats from Tiberias nigh unto the place where they did eat bread, after that the Lord had given thanks:)
24When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they also took shipping, and came to Capernaum, seeking for Jesus.
25And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him, Rabbi, when camest thou hither?
26Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.
27Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.
28Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?
29Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.
30They said therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work?
31Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.
32Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.
33For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.
34Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.
35And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
36But I said unto you, That ye also have seen me, and believe not.
37All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.
38For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.
39And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.
40And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.
41The Jews then murmured at him, because he said, I am the bread which came down from heaven.
42And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven?
43Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, Murmur not among yourselves.
44No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.
45It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.
46Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father.
47Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.
48I am that bread of life.
49Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead.
50This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.
51I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.
52The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?
53Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.
54Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.
55For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.
56He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.
57As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me.
58This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.
59These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.
60Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it?
61When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you?
62What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?
63It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
64But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him.
65And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.
66From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.
67Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?
68Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.
69And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.
70Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil?
71He spake of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve.

1After these things, Jesus went away to the other side of the sea of Galilee, which is also called the Sea of Tiberias.
2A great multitude followed him, because they saw his signs which he did on those who were sick.
3Jesus went up into the mountain, and he sat there with his disciples.
4Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand.
5Jesus therefore, lifting up his eyes and seeing that a great multitude was coming to him, said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, that these may eat?”
6He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do.
7Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may receive a little.”
8One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him,
9“There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are these among so many?”
10Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in that place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.
11Jesus took the loaves, and having given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to those who were sitting down, likewise also of the fish as much as they desired.
12When they were filled, he said to his disciples, “Gather up the broken pieces which are left over, that nothing be lost.”
13So they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with broken pieces from the five barley loaves, which were left over by those who had eaten.
14When therefore the people saw the sign which Jesus did, they said, “This is truly the prophet who comes into the world.”
15Jesus therefore, perceiving that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, withdrew again to the mountain by himself.
16When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea.
17They entered into the boat, and were going over the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not come to them.
18The sea was tossed by a great wind blowing.
19When therefore they had rowed about twenty-five or thirty stadia, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near to the boat; and they were afraid.
20But he said to them, “It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
21They were willing therefore to receive him into the boat. Immediately the boat was at the land where they were going.
22On the next day, the multitude that stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other boat there, except the one in which his disciples had embarked, and that Jesus hadn’t entered with his disciples into the boat, but his disciples had gone away alone.
23However, boats from Tiberias came near to the place where they ate the bread after the Lord had given thanks.
24When the multitude therefore saw that Jesus wasn’t there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.
25When they found him on the other side of the sea, they asked him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?”
26Jesus answered them, “Most certainly I tell you, you seek me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.
27Don’t work for the food which perishes, but for the food which remains to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For God the Father has sealed him.”
28They said therefore to him, “What must we do, that we may work the works of God?”
29Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”
30They said therefore to him, “What then do you do for a sign, that we may see and believe you? What work do you do?
31Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness. As it is written, ‘He gave them bread out of heaven to eat.’”
32Jesus therefore said to them, “Most certainly, I tell you, it wasn’t Moses who gave you the bread out of heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread out of heaven.
33For the bread of God is that which comes down out of heaven and gives life to the world.”
34They said therefore to him, “Lord, always give us this bread.”
35Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will not be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.
36But I told you that you have seen me, and yet you don’t believe.
37All those whom the Father gives me will come to me. He who comes to me I will in no way throw out.
38For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me.
39This is the will of my Father who sent me, that of all he has given to me I should lose nothing, but should raise him up at the last day.
40This is the will of the one who sent me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him should have eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.”
41The Jews therefore murmured concerning him, because he said, “I am the bread which came down out of heaven.”
42They said, “Isn’t this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How then does he say, ‘I have come down out of heaven’?”
43Therefore Jesus answered them, “Don’t murmur among yourselves.
44No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him; and I will raise him up in the last day.
45It is written in the prophets, ‘They will all be taught by God.’ Therefore everyone who hears from the Father and has learned, comes to me.
46Not that anyone has seen the Father, except he who is from God. He has seen the Father.
47Most certainly, I tell you, he who believes in me has eternal life.
48I am the bread of life.
49Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness and they died.
50This is the bread which comes down out of heaven, that anyone may eat of it and not die.
51I am the living bread which came down out of heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. Yes, the bread which I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”
52The Jews therefore contended with one another, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”
53Jesus therefore said to them, “Most certainly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you don’t have life in yourselves.
54He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.
55For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.
56He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me, and I in him.
57As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on me will also live because of me.
58This is the bread which came down out of heaven—not as our fathers ate the manna and died. He who eats this bread will live forever.”
59He said these things in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.
60Therefore many of his disciples, when they heard this, said, “This is a hard saying! Who can listen to it?”
61But Jesus knowing in himself that his disciples murmured at this, said to them, “Does this cause you to stumble?
62Then what if you would see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before?
63It is the spirit who gives life. The flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and are life.
64But there are some of you who don’t believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who didn’t believe, and who it was who would betray him.
65He said, “For this cause I have said to you that no one can come to me, unless it is given to him by my Father.”
66At this, many of his disciples went back and walked no more with him.
67Jesus said therefore to the twelve, “You don’t also want to go away, do you?”
68Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life.
69We have come to believe and know that you are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
70Jesus answered them, “Didn’t I choose you, the twelve, and one of you is a devil?”
71Now he spoke of Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, for it was he who would betray him, being one of the twelve.
