El hombre nacido de mujer vive corto tiempo, y está atestado de miserias.
EL HOMBRE nacido de mujer, corto de días, y harto de sinsabores:
Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.

El sale como una flor, y luego es cortado y se marchita; huye y desaparece como sombra, y jamás permanece en un mismo estado.
Que sale como una flor y es cortado; y huye como la sombra, y no permanece.
He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.
He grows up like a flower, and is cut down. He also flees like a shadow, and doesn’t continue.
¿Y tú te dignas abrir tus ojos sobre un ser semejante, y citarlo a juicio?
¿Y sobre éste abres tus ojos, y me traes á juicio contigo?
And dost thou open thine eyes upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment with thee?
Do you open your eyes on such a one, and bring me into judgment with you?
¿Quién podrá volver puro al que de impura simiente fue concebido? ¿Quién sino tú solo?
¿Quién hará limpio de inmundo? Nadie.

Breves son los días del hombre; tú tienes contado el número de sus meses; señalaste los términos de su vida, más allá de los cuales no podrá pasar.
Ciertamente sus días están determinados, y el número de sus meses está cerca de ti: tú le pusiste términos, de los cuales no pasará.
Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;
Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months is with you, and you have appointed his bounds that he can’t pass.
Retírate, pues, un poquito de él, para que repose mientras llega su día deseado, como el día de descanso al jornalero.
Si tú lo dejares, él dejará de ser: entre tanto deseará, como el jornalero, su día.
Turn from him, that he may rest, till he shall accomplish, as an hireling, his day.
Look away from him, that he may rest, until he accomplishes, as a hireling, his day.
El árbol tiene esperanza de reverdecer aunque sea cortado; y en efecto, brota y echa sus retoños.
Porque si el árbol fuere cortado, aun queda de él esperanza; retoñecerá aún, y sus renuevos no faltarán.
For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease.

Aun cuando sus raíces estuvieren envejecidas en la tierra y su tronco amortecido en el polvo o sequedad,

al olor del agua retoñará, y echará frondosas ramas como la primera vez que fue plantado.
Al percibir el agua reverdecerá, y hará copa como planta.
Yet through the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant.

Pero el hombre una vez muerto, y descarnado, y consumido, dime, ¿qué se hizo de él?
Mas el hombre morirá, y será cortado; y perecerá el hombre, ¿y dónde estará él?
But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?
But man dies, and is laid low. Yes, man gives up the spirit, and where is he?
A la manera que si se retirasen o enjugasen las aguas del mar, y se agotasen los ríos quedarían en seco;
Las aguas de la mar se fueron, y agotóse el río, secóse.
As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up:
As the waters fail from the sea, and the river wastes and dries up,
así el hombre, cuando durmiese el sueño de la muerte, no resucitará. Hasta tanto que el cielo sea consumido y renovado, no despertará, ni volverá en sí de su sueño.
Así el hombre yace, y no se tornará á levantar: hasta que no haya cielo no despertarán, ni se levantarán de su sueño.
So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.

¡Oh quién me diera que me guarecieses y escondieses en el sepulcro hasta que pase tu furor, y me señalases el plazo en que te has de acordar de mí!
¡Oh quién me diera que me escondieses en el sepulcro, que me encubrieras hasta apaciguarse tu ira, que me pusieses plazo, y de mí te acordaras!
O that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!
“Oh that you would hide me in Sheol, that you would keep me secret until your wrath is past, that you would appoint me a set time and remember me!
Mas, ¿acaso ha de volver a vivir un hombre ya muerto? Sí, y por eso en la guerra continua en que me hallo, estoy esperando siempre aquel día feliz en que vendrá mi mudanza o gloriosa renovación.
Si el hombre muriere, ¿volverá á vivir? Todos los días de mi edad esperaré, hasta que venga mi mutación.
If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.
If a man dies, will he live again? I would wait all the days of my warfare, until my release should come.
Entonces me llamarás, y yo te responderé; alargarás la diestra a la obra de tus manos.
Aficionado á la obra de tus manos, llamarás, y yo te responderé.
Thou shalt call, and I will answer thee: thou wilt have a desire to the work of thine hands.
You would call, and I would answer you. You would have a desire for the work of your hands.
Es verdad que tú tienes contados todos mis pasos; mas perdóname, Señor, mis pecados.
Pues ahora me cuentas los pasos, y no das tregua á mi pecado.
For now thou numberest my steps: dost thou not watch over my sin?
But now you count my steps. Don’t you watch over my sin?
Tú tienes sellados y guardados como en una arquilla mis delitos; pero has curado ya mi iniquidad.
Tienes sellada en saco mi prevaricación, y coacervas mi iniquidad.
My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and thou sewest up mine iniquity.
My disobedience is sealed up in a bag. You fasten up my iniquity.
Los montes van cayendo a pedazos y deshaciéndose, y cambian de sitio los peñascos.
Y ciertamente el monte que cae se deshace, y las peñas son traspasadas de su lugar;
And surely the mountain falling cometh to nought, and the rock is removed out of his place.
“But the mountain falling comes to nothing. The rock is removed out of its place.
Las aguas cavan las peñas, y la tierra batida con las inundaciones poco a poco se va consumiendo; del mismo modo vas tú acabando con el hombre.
Las piedras son desgastadas con el agua impetuosa, que se lleva el polvo de la tierra: de tal manera haces tú perecer la esperanza del hombre.
The waters wear the stones: thou washest away the things which grow out of the dust of the earth; and thou destroyest the hope of man.
The waters wear the stones. The torrents of it wash away the dust of the earth. So you destroy the hope of man.
Le diste vigor por un poco de tiempo, para que pasase para siempre a la eternidad; demudarás su semblante antes de morir, y le harás salir de este mundo.
Para siempre serás más fuerte que él, y él se va; demudarás su rostro, y enviaráslo.
Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth: thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.
You forever prevail against him, and he departs. You change his face, and send him away.
Que sus hijos sean esclarecidos, o viles, él no lo sabrá;
Sus hijos serán honrados, y él no lo sabrá; ó serán humillados, y no entenderá de ellos.
His sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them.
His sons come to honor, and he doesn’t know it. They are brought low, but he doesn’t perceive it of them.
pero mientras viviere, su cuerpo sufrirá dolores, y su alma deplorará su triste estado.
Mas su carne sobre él se dolerá, y entristecerse ha en él su alma.
But his flesh upon him shall have pain, and his soul within him shall mourn.
