1Y Elifaz el temanita respondió y dijo:
2¿Un hombre sabio responderá con conocimiento que no tiene valor, o se llenará del viento del este?
3¿Hará argumentos con palabras en las cuales no hay ganancia, y con dichos que no tienen valor?
4En verdad, haces que el temor de Dios sea sin efecto, desprecias el tiempo de adoración tranquila ante Dios.
5Porque tu boca es guiada por tu pecado, y has tomado el lenguaje de los astutos.
6Es por tu boca, incluso por la tuya, que eres juzgado como equivocado, y no por mí; y tus labios den testimonio contra ti.
7¿Fuiste el primer hombre en venir al mundo? ¿O llegaste a ser antes que los montes?
8¿Estabas presente en la reunión secreta de Dios? ¿Y has tomado toda la sabiduría para ti?
9¿Qué conocimiento tienes tú que nosotros no tenemos? ¿Hay algo en tu mente que no esté en la nuestra?
10Con nosotros hay hombres que son canosos y llenos de años, mucho más viejos que tu padre.
11¿No es suficientes él consuelo de Dios para ti, y que te hablemos amablemente?
12¿Por qué tu corazón está descontrolado, y por qué tus ojos te brillan?
13¿Así que estás volviendo tu espíritu contra Dios y dejando que tales palabras salgan de tu boca?
14¿Qué es el hombre, para que esté limpio? ¿Y cómo puede el hijo de la mujer ser recto?
15En verdad, él no pone fe en sus santos, y los cielos no están limpios en sus ojos;
16¡Cuánto menos uno que es asqueroso e inmundo, un hombre que hace el mal como quien bebe agua!
17Toma nota y escucha mis palabras; Y te diré lo que he visto:
18Las cosas que los hombres sabios han obtenido de sus padres, y no han ocultado de nosotros;
19Porque solo a ellos les fue dada la tierra, y no había extranjeros entre ellos.
20El hombre malo está sufriendo todos sus días, y el número de años acumulados para los crueles es pequeño.
21Un sonido de temor está en sus oídos; en tiempo de paz la destrucción vendrá sobre él:
22No tiene ninguna esperanza de salir a salvo de la oscuridad, y su destino será la espada;
23Deambula en busca de pan, diciendo: ¿Dónde está? y está seguro de que el día de la angustia está listo para él.
24Él tiene mucho miedo de los días oscuros, los problemas y el dolor lo superan; como cuando un rey se prepara para atacar.
25Porque su mano se extiende contra Dios, y actúa con insolencia contra él Todopoderoso.
26Corriendo contra él como un hombre de guerra, cubierto por su coraza gruesa;
27Porque su rostro está cubierto de grasa, y su cuerpo se ha vuelto grueso;
28Y ha hecho su lugar de descanso en las ciudades que han sido derribadas, en casas donde ningún hombre tenía derecho a estar, cuyo destino era convertirse en masas de paredes rotas.
29Él no obtiene riqueza para sí mismo, y es incapaz de conservar lo que tiene; sus riquezas no se extenderán sobre la tierra.
30No sale de la oscuridad; Sus ramas son quemadas por la llama, y por él aliento de su boca perecerá.
31Que no ponga su esperanza en lo que es falso, caer en el error: porque recibirá engaño como recompensa.
32Su rama está cortada antes de tiempo, y su hoja ya no es verde.
33Es como una vid cuyas uvas no llegan a su pleno crecimiento, o un olivo que deja caer sus flores.
34Porque la banda de los malhechores no da fruto, y las tiendas de aquellos que sobornan son quemadas con fuego.
35Concibieron maldad, y dan a luz iniquidad; y en sus entrañas preparan engaño.

1Y RESPONDIÓ Eliphaz Temanita, y dijo:
2¿Si proferirá el sabio vana sabiduría, y henchirá su vientre de viento solano?
3¿Disputará con palabras inútiles, y con razones sin provecho?
4Tú también disipas el temor, y menoscabas la oración delante de Dios.
5Porque tu boca declaró tu iniquidad, pues has escogido el hablar de los astutos.
6Tu boca te condenará, y no yo; y tus labios testificarán contra ti.
7¿Naciste tú primero que Adam? ¿ó fuiste formado antes que los collados?
8¿Oíste tú el secreto de Dios, que detienes en ti solo la sabiduría?
9¿Qué sabes tú que no sepamos? ¿qué entiendes que no se halle en nosotros?
10Entre nosotros también hay cano, también hay viejo mucho mayor en días que tu padre.
11¿En tan poco tienes las consolaciones de Dios? ¿tienes acaso alguna cosa oculta cerca de ti?
12¿Por qué te enajena tu corazón, y por qué guiñan tus ojos,
13Pues haces frente á Dios con tu espíritu, y sacas tales palabras de tu boca?
14¿Qué cosa es el hombre para que sea limpio, y que se justifique el nacido de mujer?
15He aquí que en sus santos no confía, y ni los cielos son limpios delante de sus ojos:
16¿Cuánto menos el hombre abominable y vil, que bebe la iniquidad como agua?
17Escúchame; yo te mostraré y te contaré lo que he visto:
18(Lo que los sabios nos contaron de sus padres, y no lo encubrieron;
19A los cuales solos fué dada la tierra, y no pasó extraño por medio de ellos:)
20Todos los días del impío, él es atormentado de dolor, y el número de años es escondido al violento.
21Estruendos espantosos hay en sus oídos; en la paz le vendrá quien lo asuele.
22El no creerá que ha de volver de las tinieblas, y está mirando al cuchillo.
23Desasosegado á comer siempre, sabe que le está aparejado día de tinieblas.
24Tribulación y angustia le asombrarán, y esforzaránse contra él como un rey apercibido para la batalla.
25Por cuanto él extendió su mano contra Dios, y se esforzó contra el Todopoderoso,
26El le acometerá en la cerviz, en lo grueso de las hombreras de sus escudos:
27Porque cubrió su rostro con su gordura, é hizo pliegues sobre los ijares;
28Y habitó las ciudades asoladas, las casas inhabitadas, que estaban puestas en montones.
29No enriquecerá, ni será firme su potencia, ni extenderá por la tierra su hermosura.
30No se escapará de las tinieblas: la llama secará sus ramos, y con el aliento de su boca perecerá.
31No confíe el iluso en la vanidad; porque ella será su recompensa.
32El será cortado antes de su tiempo, y sus renuevos no reverdecerán.
33El perderá su agraz como la vid, y derramará su flor como la oliva.
34Porque la sociedad de los hipócritas será asolada, y fuego consumirá las tiendas de soborno.
35Concibieron dolor, y parieron iniquidad; y las entrañas de ellos meditan engaño.
King James Version
1Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,
2Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?
3Should he reason with unprofitable talk? or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?
4Yea, thou castest off fear, and restrainest prayer before God.
5For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty.
6Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I: yea, thine own lips testify against thee.
7Art thou the first man that was born? or wast thou made before the hills?
8Hast thou heard the secret of God? and dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself?
9What knowest thou, that we know not? what understandest thou, which is not in us?
10With us are both the grayheaded and very aged men, much elder than thy father.
11Are the consolations of God small with thee? is there any secret thing with thee?
12Why doth thine heart carry thee away? and what do thy eyes wink at,
13That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest such words go out of thy mouth?
14What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
15Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight.
16How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water?
17I will shew thee, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare;
18Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid it:
19Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.
20The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor.
21A dreadful sound is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.
22He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword.
23He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.
24Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.
25For he stretcheth out his hand against God, and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty.
26He runneth upon him, even on his neck, upon the thick bosses of his bucklers:
27Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks.
28And he dwelleth in desolate cities, and in houses which no man inhabiteth, which are ready to become heaps.
29He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he prolong the perfection thereof upon the earth.
30He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.
31Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence.
32It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green.
33He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive.
34For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery.
35They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepareth deceit.

1Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered,
2“Should a wise man answer with vain knowledge, and fill himself with the east wind?
3Should he reason with unprofitable talk, or with speeches with which he can do no good?
4Yes, you do away with fear, and hinder devotion before God.
5For your iniquity teaches your mouth, and you choose the language of the crafty.
6Your own mouth condemns you, and not I. Yes, your own lips testify against you.
7“Are you the first man who was born? Or were you brought out before the hills?
8Have you heard the secret counsel of God? Do you limit wisdom to yourself?
9What do you know that we don’t know? What do you understand which is not in us?
10With us are both the gray-headed and the very aged men, much older than your father.
11Are the consolations of God too small for you, even the word that is gentle toward you?
12Why does your heart carry you away? Why do your eyes flash,
13that you turn your spirit against God, and let such words go out of your mouth?
14What is man, that he should be clean? What is he who is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
15Behold, he puts no trust in his holy ones. Yes, the heavens are not clean in his sight;
16how much less one who is abominable and corrupt, a man who drinks iniquity like water!
17“I will show you, listen to me; that which I have seen I will declare
18(which wise men have told by their fathers, and have not hidden it;
19to whom alone the land was given, and no stranger passed among them):
20the wicked man writhes in pain all his days, even the number of years that are laid up for the oppressor.
21A sound of terrors is in his ears. In prosperity the destroyer will come on him.
22He doesn’t believe that he will return out of darkness. He is waited for by the sword.
23He wanders abroad for bread, saying, ‘Where is it?’ He knows that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.
24Distress and anguish make him afraid. They prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.
25Because he has stretched out his hand against God, and behaves himself proudly against the Almighty,
26he runs at him with a stiff neck, with the thick shields of his bucklers,
27because he has covered his face with his fatness, and gathered fat on his thighs.
28He has lived in desolate cities, in houses which no one inhabited, which were ready to become heaps.
29He will not be rich, neither will his substance continue, neither will their possessions be extended on the earth.
30He will not depart out of darkness. The flame will dry up his branches. He will go away by the breath of God’s mouth.
31Let him not trust in emptiness, deceiving himself, for emptiness will be his reward.
32It will be accomplished before his time. His branch will not be green.
33He will shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and will cast off his flower as the olive tree.
34For the company of the godless will be barren, and fire will consume the tents of bribery.
35They conceive mischief and produce iniquity. Their heart prepares deceit.”
