Y RESPONDIÓ Eliphaz Temanita, y dijo:
Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,

«¿Debe un sabio como tú hablar así? Tus argumentos son puro viento.
¿Si proferirá el sabio vana sabiduría, y henchirá su vientre de viento solano?
Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?
“Should a wise man answer with vain knowledge, and fill himself with the east wind?
No está bien hablar tan neciamente. ¿Qué bien hacen tales palabras?
¿Disputará con palabras inútiles, y con razones sin provecho?
Should he reason with unprofitable talk? or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?
Should he reason with unprofitable talk, or with speeches with which he can do no good?
¿No tienes temor de Dios? ¿No le tienes reverencia? Tus pecados inspiran las palabras de tu boca. Lo que dices se funda en astuto engaño.
Tú también disipas el temor, y menoscabas la oración delante de Dios.
Yea, thou castest off fear, and restrainest prayer before God.
Yes, you do away with fear, and hinder devotion before God.

Porque tu boca declaró tu iniquidad, pues has escogido el hablar de los astutos.
For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty.
For your iniquity teaches your mouth, and you choose the language of the crafty.
¿Por qué habría yo de condenarte? De ello se encarga tu propia boca.
Tu boca te condenará, y no yo; y tus labios testificarán contra ti.
Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I: yea, thine own lips testify against thee.
Your own mouth condemns you, and not I. Yes, your own lips testify against you.
»¿Eres acaso el hombre más sabio que ha existido? ¿Naciste antes que fueran hechas las colinas? ¿Tienes parte en el consejo de Dios? ¿Acaso eres tú el único sabio?
¿Naciste tú primero que Adam? ¿ó fuiste formado antes que los collados?
Art thou the first man that was born? or wast thou made before the hills?
“Are you the first man who was born? Or were you brought out before the hills?

¿Oíste tú el secreto de Dios, que detienes en ti solo la sabiduría?
Hast thou heard the secret of God? and dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself?
Have you heard the secret counsel of God? Do you limit wisdom to yourself?
¿Qué sabes tú más que nosotros? ¿Qué entiendes que no entendamos?
¿Qué sabes tú que no sepamos? ¿qué entiendes que no se halle en nosotros?
What knowest thou, that we know not? what understandest thou, which is not in us?
What do you know that we don’t know? What do you understand which is not in us?
Hay entre nosotros ancianos mucho mayores que tu padre.
Entre nosotros también hay cano, también hay viejo mucho mayor en días que tu padre.
With us are both the grayheaded and very aged men, much elder than thy father.
With us are both the gray-headed and the very aged men, much older than your father.
El consuelo de Dios, ¿será demasiado insignificante para ti? ¿Es su dulzura demasiado áspera?
¿En tan poco tienes las consolaciones de Dios? ¿tienes acaso alguna cosa oculta cerca de ti?
Are the consolations of God small with thee? is there any secret thing with thee?
Are the consolations of God too small for you, even the word that is gentle toward you?
»¿Qué haces, dejándote arrastrar por la ira? ¿Por qué te relampaguean los ojos?
¿Por qué te enajena tu corazón, y por qué guiñan tus ojos,
Why doth thine heart carry thee away? and what do thy eyes wink at,
Why does your heart carry you away? Why do your eyes flash,
¿Por qué te vuelves contra Dios y le echas en cara todos estos perversos razonamientos?
Pues haces frente á Dios con tu espíritu, y sacas tales palabras de tu boca?
That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest such words go out of thy mouth?
that you turn your spirit against God, and let such words go out of your mouth?
»¿Qué hombre en toda la tierra podrá ser tan puro y justo como tú dices ser?
¿Qué cosa es el hombre para que sea limpio, y que se justifique el nacido de mujer?
What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
What is man, that he should be clean? What is he who is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
¡Vaya! ¡Dios no confía ni siquiera en los ángeles! ¡Ni siquiera los cielos pueden ser absolutamente puros comparados con él!
He aquí que en sus santos no confía, y ni los cielos son limpios delante de sus ojos:
Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight.
Behold, he puts no trust in his holy ones. Yes, the heavens are not clean in his sight;
¡Cuánto menos uno como tú, corrupto y pecaminoso, que bebe el pecado como agua!
¿Cuánto menos el hombre abominable y vil, que bebe la iniquidad como agua?
How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water?
how much less one who is abominable and corrupt, a man who drinks iniquity like water!
»Escúchame, y te responderé por experiencia propia, confirmada con la experiencia de los sabios varones que recibieron esto de sus padres, nuestros antepasados, los únicos a quienes se les dio la tierra.
Escúchame; yo te mostraré y te contaré lo que he visto:
I will shew thee, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare;
“I will show you, listen to me; that which I have seen I will declare

(Lo que los sabios nos contaron de sus padres, y no lo encubrieron;
Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid it:
(which wise men have told by their fathers, and have not hidden it;

A los cuales solos fué dada la tierra, y no pasó extraño por medio de ellos:)
Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.

El hombre impío anda siempre atribulado en su vida.
Todos los días del impío, él es atormentado de dolor, y el número de años es escondido al violento.
The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor.
the wicked man writhes in pain all his days, even the number of years that are laid up for the oppressor.
Está cercado de terrores, y si tiene días buenos, pronto se le desvanecen.
Estruendos espantosos hay en sus oídos; en la paz le vendrá quien lo asuele.
A dreadful sound is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.
A sound of terrors is in his ears. In prosperity the destroyer will come on him.
No se atreve a salir en la oscuridad, por miedo a que lo maten.
El no creerá que ha de volver de las tinieblas, y está mirando al cuchillo.
He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword.
He doesn’t believe that he will return out of darkness. He is waited for by the sword.
Anda errante mendigando alimento. Vive en el temor, la zozobra y la angustia. Sus enemigos lo vencen como un rey que derrota a sus enemigos.
Desasosegado á comer siempre, sabe que le está aparejado día de tinieblas.
He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.
He wanders abroad for bread, saying, ‘Where is it?’ He knows that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.

Tribulación y angustia le asombrarán, y esforzaránse contra él como un rey apercibido para la batalla.
Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.

Protegiéndose con escudo de latón, alza el puño contra Dios, desafiando al Todopoderoso, atacándolo neciamente.
Por cuanto él extendió su mano contra Dios, y se esforzó contra el Todopoderoso,
For he stretcheth out his hand against God, and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty.
Because he has stretched out his hand against God, and behaves himself proudly against the Almighty,

El le acometerá en la cerviz, en lo grueso de las hombreras de sus escudos:
He runneth upon him, even on his neck, upon the thick bosses of his bucklers:
he runs at him with a stiff neck, with the thick shields of his bucklers,
»Este perverso hombre está gordo y rico, y ha vivido en ciudades conquistadas luego de matar a sus habitantes.
Porque cubrió su rostro con su gordura, é hizo pliegues sobre los ijares;
Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks.
because he has covered his face with his fatness, and gathered fat on his thighs.

Y habitó las ciudades asoladas, las casas inhabitadas, que estaban puestas en montones.
And he dwelleth in desolate cities, and in houses which no man inhabiteth, which are ready to become heaps.
He has lived in desolate cities, in houses which no one inhabited, which were ready to become heaps.
Pero no será siempre rico ni continuará extendiendo sus posesiones.
No enriquecerá, ni será firme su potencia, ni extenderá por la tierra su hermosura.
He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he prolong the perfection thereof upon the earth.
He will not be rich, neither will his substance continue, neither will their possessions be extended on the earth.
No; las tinieblas lo envolverán para siempre; el aliento de Dios lo destruirá; el fuego consumirá cuanto posee.
No se escapará de las tinieblas: la llama secará sus ramos, y con el aliento de su boca perecerá.
He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.
He will not depart out of darkness. The flame will dry up his branches. He will go away by the breath of God’s mouth.
Que ya no confíe en vanas riquezas; que no se engañe más, pues el dinero en que confía será su única recompensa.
No confíe el iluso en la vanidad; porque ella será su recompensa.
Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence.
Let him not trust in emptiness, deceiving himself, for emptiness will be his reward.
Antes que muera, toda esa insignificancia le saltará a la vista. Porque todo lo que constituía su seguridad, desaparecerá,
El será cortado antes de su tiempo, y sus renuevos no reverdecerán.
It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green.
It will be accomplished before his time. His branch will not be green.
y caerá en tierra como uva marchita. ¡Qué poca sustancia darán sus esperanzas!
El perderá su agraz como la vid, y derramará su flor como la oliva.
He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive.
He will shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and will cast off his flower as the olive tree.
Porque los impíos son estériles: no logran producir nada realmente bueno. El fuego de Dios los consume junto con todas sus posesiones.
Porque la sociedad de los hipócritas será asolada, y fuego consumirá las tiendas de soborno.
For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery.
For the company of the godless will be barren, and fire will consume the tents of bribery.
Lo único que pueden concebir es pecado; su corazón sólo da a luz maldad».
Concibieron dolor, y parieron iniquidad; y las entrañas de ellos meditan engaño.
They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepareth deceit.
They conceive mischief and produce iniquity. Their heart prepares deceit.”
