2«¿Debe un sabio como tú hablar así? Tus argumentos son puro viento.
3No está bien hablar tan neciamente. ¿Qué bien hacen tales palabras?
4¿No tienes temor de Dios? ¿No le tienes reverencia? Tus pecados inspiran las palabras de tu boca. Lo que dices se funda en astuto engaño.

6¿Por qué habría yo de condenarte? De ello se encarga tu propia boca.
7»¿Eres acaso el hombre más sabio que ha existido? ¿Naciste antes que fueran hechas las colinas? ¿Tienes parte en el consejo de Dios? ¿Acaso eres tú el único sabio?

9¿Qué sabes tú más que nosotros? ¿Qué entiendes que no entendamos?
10Hay entre nosotros ancianos mucho mayores que tu padre.
11El consuelo de Dios, ¿será demasiado insignificante para ti? ¿Es su dulzura demasiado áspera?
12»¿Qué haces, dejándote arrastrar por la ira? ¿Por qué te relampaguean los ojos?
13¿Por qué te vuelves contra Dios y le echas en cara todos estos perversos razonamientos?
14»¿Qué hombre en toda la tierra podrá ser tan puro y justo como tú dices ser?
15¡Vaya! ¡Dios no confía ni siquiera en los ángeles! ¡Ni siquiera los cielos pueden ser absolutamente puros comparados con él!
16¡Cuánto menos uno como tú, corrupto y pecaminoso, que bebe el pecado como agua!
17»Escúchame, y te responderé por experiencia propia, confirmada con la experiencia de los sabios varones que recibieron esto de sus padres, nuestros antepasados, los únicos a quienes se les dio la tierra.

20El hombre impío anda siempre atribulado en su vida.
21Está cercado de terrores, y si tiene días buenos, pronto se le desvanecen.
22No se atreve a salir en la oscuridad, por miedo a que lo maten.
23Anda errante mendigando alimento. Vive en el temor, la zozobra y la angustia. Sus enemigos lo vencen como un rey que derrota a sus enemigos.

25Protegiéndose con escudo de latón, alza el puño contra Dios, desafiando al Todopoderoso, atacándolo neciamente.
26—
27»Este perverso hombre está gordo y rico, y ha vivido en ciudades conquistadas luego de matar a sus habitantes.
28—
29Pero no será siempre rico ni continuará extendiendo sus posesiones.
30No; las tinieblas lo envolverán para siempre; el aliento de Dios lo destruirá; el fuego consumirá cuanto posee.
31Que ya no confíe en vanas riquezas; que no se engañe más, pues el dinero en que confía será su única recompensa.
32Antes que muera, toda esa insignificancia le saltará a la vista. Porque todo lo que constituía su seguridad, desaparecerá,
33y caerá en tierra como uva marchita. ¡Qué poca sustancia darán sus esperanzas!
34Porque los impíos son estériles: no logran producir nada realmente bueno. El fuego de Dios los consume junto con todas sus posesiones.
35Lo único que pueden concebir es pecado; su corazón sólo da a luz maldad».

1Y RESPONDIÓ Eliphaz Temanita, y dijo:
2¿Si proferirá el sabio vana sabiduría, y henchirá su vientre de viento solano?
3¿Disputará con palabras inútiles, y con razones sin provecho?
4Tú también disipas el temor, y menoscabas la oración delante de Dios.
5Porque tu boca declaró tu iniquidad, pues has escogido el hablar de los astutos.
6Tu boca te condenará, y no yo; y tus labios testificarán contra ti.
7¿Naciste tú primero que Adam? ¿ó fuiste formado antes que los collados?
8¿Oíste tú el secreto de Dios, que detienes en ti solo la sabiduría?
9¿Qué sabes tú que no sepamos? ¿qué entiendes que no se halle en nosotros?
10Entre nosotros también hay cano, también hay viejo mucho mayor en días que tu padre.
11¿En tan poco tienes las consolaciones de Dios? ¿tienes acaso alguna cosa oculta cerca de ti?
12¿Por qué te enajena tu corazón, y por qué guiñan tus ojos,
13Pues haces frente á Dios con tu espíritu, y sacas tales palabras de tu boca?
14¿Qué cosa es el hombre para que sea limpio, y que se justifique el nacido de mujer?
15He aquí que en sus santos no confía, y ni los cielos son limpios delante de sus ojos:
16¿Cuánto menos el hombre abominable y vil, que bebe la iniquidad como agua?
17Escúchame; yo te mostraré y te contaré lo que he visto:
18(Lo que los sabios nos contaron de sus padres, y no lo encubrieron;
19A los cuales solos fué dada la tierra, y no pasó extraño por medio de ellos:)
20Todos los días del impío, él es atormentado de dolor, y el número de años es escondido al violento.
21Estruendos espantosos hay en sus oídos; en la paz le vendrá quien lo asuele.
22El no creerá que ha de volver de las tinieblas, y está mirando al cuchillo.
23Desasosegado á comer siempre, sabe que le está aparejado día de tinieblas.
24Tribulación y angustia le asombrarán, y esforzaránse contra él como un rey apercibido para la batalla.
25Por cuanto él extendió su mano contra Dios, y se esforzó contra el Todopoderoso,
26El le acometerá en la cerviz, en lo grueso de las hombreras de sus escudos:
27Porque cubrió su rostro con su gordura, é hizo pliegues sobre los ijares;
28Y habitó las ciudades asoladas, las casas inhabitadas, que estaban puestas en montones.
29No enriquecerá, ni será firme su potencia, ni extenderá por la tierra su hermosura.
30No se escapará de las tinieblas: la llama secará sus ramos, y con el aliento de su boca perecerá.
31No confíe el iluso en la vanidad; porque ella será su recompensa.
32El será cortado antes de su tiempo, y sus renuevos no reverdecerán.
33El perderá su agraz como la vid, y derramará su flor como la oliva.
34Porque la sociedad de los hipócritas será asolada, y fuego consumirá las tiendas de soborno.
35Concibieron dolor, y parieron iniquidad; y las entrañas de ellos meditan engaño.

1Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,
2Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?
3Should he reason with unprofitable talk? or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?
4Yea, thou castest off fear, and restrainest prayer before God.
5For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty.
6Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I: yea, thine own lips testify against thee.
7Art thou the first man that was born? or wast thou made before the hills?
8Hast thou heard the secret of God? and dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself?
9What knowest thou, that we know not? what understandest thou, which is not in us?
10With us are both the grayheaded and very aged men, much elder than thy father.
11Are the consolations of God small with thee? is there any secret thing with thee?
12Why doth thine heart carry thee away? and what do thy eyes wink at,
13That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest such words go out of thy mouth?
14What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
15Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight.
16How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water?
17I will shew thee, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare;
18Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid it:
19Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.
20The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor.
21A dreadful sound is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.
22He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword.
23He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.
24Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.
25For he stretcheth out his hand against God, and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty.
26He runneth upon him, even on his neck, upon the thick bosses of his bucklers:
27Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks.
28And he dwelleth in desolate cities, and in houses which no man inhabiteth, which are ready to become heaps.
29He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he prolong the perfection thereof upon the earth.
30He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.
31Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence.
32It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green.
33He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive.
34For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery.
35They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepareth deceit.

1Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered,
2“Should a wise man answer with vain knowledge, and fill himself with the east wind?
3Should he reason with unprofitable talk, or with speeches with which he can do no good?
4Yes, you do away with fear, and hinder devotion before God.
5For your iniquity teaches your mouth, and you choose the language of the crafty.
6Your own mouth condemns you, and not I. Yes, your own lips testify against you.
7“Are you the first man who was born? Or were you brought out before the hills?
8Have you heard the secret counsel of God? Do you limit wisdom to yourself?
9What do you know that we don’t know? What do you understand which is not in us?
10With us are both the gray-headed and the very aged men, much older than your father.
11Are the consolations of God too small for you, even the word that is gentle toward you?
12Why does your heart carry you away? Why do your eyes flash,
13that you turn your spirit against God, and let such words go out of your mouth?
14What is man, that he should be clean? What is he who is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
15Behold, he puts no trust in his holy ones. Yes, the heavens are not clean in his sight;
16how much less one who is abominable and corrupt, a man who drinks iniquity like water!
17“I will show you, listen to me; that which I have seen I will declare
18(which wise men have told by their fathers, and have not hidden it;
19to whom alone the land was given, and no stranger passed among them):
20the wicked man writhes in pain all his days, even the number of years that are laid up for the oppressor.
21A sound of terrors is in his ears. In prosperity the destroyer will come on him.
22He doesn’t believe that he will return out of darkness. He is waited for by the sword.
23He wanders abroad for bread, saying, ‘Where is it?’ He knows that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.
24Distress and anguish make him afraid. They prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.
25Because he has stretched out his hand against God, and behaves himself proudly against the Almighty,
26he runs at him with a stiff neck, with the thick shields of his bucklers,
27because he has covered his face with his fatness, and gathered fat on his thighs.
28He has lived in desolate cities, in houses which no one inhabited, which were ready to become heaps.
29He will not be rich, neither will his substance continue, neither will their possessions be extended on the earth.
30He will not depart out of darkness. The flame will dry up his branches. He will go away by the breath of God’s mouth.
31Let him not trust in emptiness, deceiving himself, for emptiness will be his reward.
32It will be accomplished before his time. His branch will not be green.
33He will shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and will cast off his flower as the olive tree.
34For the company of the godless will be barren, and fire will consume the tents of bribery.
35They conceive mischief and produce iniquity. Their heart prepares deceit.”
