Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,

¿Es posible que un hombre sabio respondiese como tú, echando palabras al aire, y encendiendo el fuego de la ira en su pecho?
¿Si proferirá el sabio vana sabiduría, y henchirá su vientre de viento solano?
Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?
“Should a wise man answer with vain knowledge, and fill himself with the east wind?
Tú, con tus palabras, arguyes al Señor, que no es ningún igual tuyo, y hablas de un modo que no puede serte provechoso.
¿Disputará con palabras inútiles, y con razones sin provecho?
Should he reason with unprofitable talk? or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?
Should he reason with unprofitable talk, or with speeches with which he can do no good?
Cuanto es de tu parte has desterrado el temor de Dios; y las oraciones que deben hacérsele.
Tú también disipas el temor, y menoscabas la oración delante de Dios.
Yea, thou castest off fear, and restrainest prayer before God.
Yes, you do away with fear, and hinder devotion before God.
Porque la iniquidad tuya ha dirigido tu lengua, y vas imitando el habla de los blasfemos.
Porque tu boca declaró tu iniquidad, pues has escogido el hablar de los astutos.
For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty.
For your iniquity teaches your mouth, and you choose the language of the crafty.
De suerte que serán tus propias palabras, y no yo, las que te condenarán; y por aquello mismo que han proferido tus labios, serás condenado.
Tu boca te condenará, y no yo; y tus labios testificarán contra ti.
Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I: yea, thine own lips testify against thee.
Your own mouth condemns you, and not I. Yes, your own lips testify against you.
¿Naciste tú por ventura el primer hombre del mundo, y fuiste formado antes que los montes?
¿Naciste tú primero que Adam? ¿ó fuiste formado antes que los collados?
Art thou the first man that was born? or wast thou made before the hills?
“Are you the first man who was born? Or were you brought out before the hills?
¿Has entrado acaso en el consejo de Dios, o será inferior a la tuya su infinita sabiduría?
¿Oíste tú el secreto de Dios, que detienes en ti solo la sabiduría?
Hast thou heard the secret of God? and dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself?
Have you heard the secret counsel of God? Do you limit wisdom to yourself?
¿Qué es lo que sabes tú que nosotros ignoremos? ¿Qué alcanzas que no sepamos?
¿Qué sabes tú que no sepamos? ¿qué entiendes que no se halle en nosotros?
What knowest thou, that we know not? what understandest thou, which is not in us?
What do you know that we don’t know? What do you understand which is not in us?
También hay entre nosotros hombres de mucha edad y ancianos respetables, mucho más avanzados en días que tus padres.
Entre nosotros también hay cano, también hay viejo mucho mayor en días que tu padre.
With us are both the grayheaded and very aged men, much elder than thy father.
With us are both the gray-headed and the very aged men, much older than your father.
¿Acaso sería difícil a Dios consolarte? Pero lo estorban tus perversas palabras.
¿En tan poco tienes las consolaciones de Dios? ¿tienes acaso alguna cosa oculta cerca de ti?
Are the consolations of God small with thee? is there any secret thing with thee?
Are the consolations of God too small for you, even the word that is gentle toward you?
¿Por qué se engríe tu corazón, y como hombre que atónito medita grandes cosas tienes fijos los ojos?
¿Por qué te enajena tu corazón, y por qué guiñan tus ojos,
Why doth thine heart carry thee away? and what do thy eyes wink at,
Why does your heart carry you away? Why do your eyes flash,
¿Por qué tu ánimo está hinchado contra Dios, hasta proferir tu boca tales expresiones?
Pues haces frente á Dios con tu espíritu, y sacas tales palabras de tu boca?
That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest such words go out of thy mouth?
that you turn your spirit against God, and let such words go out of your mouth?
¿Qué es el miserable hombre para que pueda ser inmaculado; y cómo, siendo nacido de mujer, ha de aparecer justo?
¿Qué cosa es el hombre para que sea limpio, y que se justifique el nacido de mujer?
What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
What is man, that he should be clean? What is he who is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
Mira cómo ni aun entre sus mismos santos ninguno es acá inmutable, y ni los cielos están limpios a sus ojos.
He aquí que en sus santos no confía, y ni los cielos son limpios delante de sus ojos:
Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight.
Behold, he puts no trust in his holy ones. Yes, the heavens are not clean in his sight;
¿Cuánto más un hombre inútil y abominable, que se bebe como agua la maldad?
¿Cuánto menos el hombre abominable y vil, que bebe la iniquidad como agua?
How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water?
how much less one who is abominable and corrupt, a man who drinks iniquity like water!
Oyeme, pues, yo te convenceré; te contaré aquello que he visto.
Escúchame; yo te mostraré y te contaré lo que he visto:
I will shew thee, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare;
“I will show you, listen to me; that which I have seen I will declare
Los sabios publican lo que saben y no ocultan lo que han aprendido de sus padres o mayores.
(Lo que los sabios nos contaron de sus padres, y no lo encubrieron;
Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid it:
(which wise men have told by their fathers, and have not hidden it;
A los cuales solos fue dada esta tierra, y nunca los extranjeros hallaron paso por medio de ellos.

Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.

Al impío toda su vida le acompaña y engríe la soberbia, aunque sea tan incierto el número de años que durará su tiranía.
Todos los días del impío, él es atormentado de dolor, y el número de años es escondido al violento.
The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor.
the wicked man writhes in pain all his days, even the number of years that are laid up for the oppressor.
Siempre suena en sus oídos un estruendo que le aterra; y en el seno de la paz él sospecha siempre traiciones.
Estruendos espantosos hay en sus oídos; en la paz le vendrá quien lo asuele.
A dreadful sound is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.
A sound of terrors is in his ears. In prosperity the destroyer will come on him.
Cuando está entre las tinieblas de la noche, no cree que pueda volver a ver la luz, imaginándose rodeado de espadas.
El no creerá que ha de volver de las tinieblas, y está mirando al cuchillo.
He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword.
He doesn’t believe that he will return out of darkness. He is waited for by the sword.
Si se mueve para buscar alimento, cree que el negro día de la muerte está en el bocado que tiene en su mano.
Desasosegado á comer siempre, sabe que le está aparejado día de tinieblas.
He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.
He wanders abroad for bread, saying, ‘Where is it?’ He knows that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.
El temor de la tribulación le llena de terror, y desastres imaginarios le rodean y desasosiegan, como a un rey que se dispone a dar una batalla.
Tribulación y angustia le asombrarán, y esforzaránse contra él como un rey apercibido para la batalla.
Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.
Distress and anguish make him afraid. They prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.
Y es que alzó su mano contra Dios, y se creyó bastante fuerte contra el Todopoderoso.
Por cuanto él extendió su mano contra Dios, y se esforzó contra el Todopoderoso,
For he stretcheth out his hand against God, and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty.
Because he has stretched out his hand against God, and behaves himself proudly against the Almighty,
Corrió contra él erguido el cuello y armado de inflexible soberbia.
El le acometerá en la cerviz, en lo grueso de las hombreras de sus escudos:
He runneth upon him, even on his neck, upon the thick bosses of his bucklers:
he runs at him with a stiff neck, with the thick shields of his bucklers,
Tiene llena de gordura su cara, y rebosa la grasa en sus costados.
Porque cubrió su rostro con su gordura, é hizo pliegues sobre los ijares;
Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks.
because he has covered his face with his fatness, and gathered fat on his thighs.
Vino a morar en ciudades asoladas y casas desiertas, que estaban reducidas a montones de piedras.
Y habitó las ciudades asoladas, las casas inhabitadas, que estaban puestas en montones.
And he dwelleth in desolate cities, and in houses which no man inhabiteth, which are ready to become heaps.
He has lived in desolate cities, in houses which no one inhabited, which were ready to become heaps.
No se enriquecerá, y aun los bienes que tenga no durarán; ni echará raíces en la tierra.
No enriquecerá, ni será firme su potencia, ni extenderá por la tierra su hermosura.
He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he prolong the perfection thereof upon the earth.
He will not be rich, neither will his substance continue, neither will their possessions be extended on the earth.
Estará siempre en tinieblas; sus descendientes serán consumidos por el fuego; y perecerá con el aliento solo de la boca del Todopoderoso.
No se escapará de las tinieblas: la llama secará sus ramos, y con el aliento de su boca perecerá.
He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.
He will not depart out of darkness. The flame will dry up his branches. He will go away by the breath of God’s mouth.
Engañado de un vano error, no creerá que pueda ser redimido por ningún rescate.
No confíe el iluso en la vanidad; porque ella será su recompensa.
Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence.
Let him not trust in emptiness, deceiving himself, for emptiness will be his reward.
Antes que llegue el término de sus días morirá, y se secarán sus manos.
El será cortado antes de su tiempo, y sus renuevos no reverdecerán.
It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green.
It will be accomplished before his time. His branch will not be green.
Le sucederá lo que a la vid, cuyos racimos se pierden estando en cierne; y como al olivo, cuya flor cae en tierra.
El perderá su agraz como la vid, y derramará su flor como la oliva.
He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive.
He will shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and will cast off his flower as the olive tree.
Porque la familia del hipócrita será estéril y el fuego devorará la morada de aquellos que se dejan ganar por regalos.
Porque la sociedad de los hipócritas será asolada, y fuego consumirá las tiendas de soborno.
For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery.
For the company of the godless will be barren, and fire will consume the tents of bribery.
Concibió penas y parió maldades, y su corazón está urdiendo fraudes.
Concibieron dolor, y parieron iniquidad; y las entrañas de ellos meditan engaño.
They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepareth deceit.
They conceive mischief and produce iniquity. Their heart prepares deceit.”
