Job 1

1Il y avait dans le pays d’Uts un homme dont le nom était Job ; et cet homme était parfait et droit, craignant Dieu et se retirant du mal.
2Et il lui naquit sept fils et trois filles ;
3et il possédait 7 000 brebis, et 3 000 chameaux, et 500 paires de bœufs, et 500 ânesses ; et [il avait] un très grand nombre de serviteurs ; et cet homme était plus grand que tous les fils de l’orient.
4Et ses fils allaient et faisaient un festin, chacun dans [sa] maison, à son jour ; et ils envoyaient appeler leurs trois sœurs pour manger et pour boire avec eux.
5Et il arrivait que, quand les jours de festin étaient terminés, Job envoyait [vers eux] et les sanctifiait : il se levait de bonne heure le matin et offrait des holocaustes selon leur nombre à tous, car Job disait : Peut-être mes fils ont-ils péché et ont-ils maudit Dieu dans leurs cœurs. Job faisait toujours ainsi.
6Or, un jour, il arriva que les fils de Dieu vinrent se présenter devant l’Éternel, et Satan aussi vint au milieu d’eux.
7Et l’Éternel dit à Satan : D’où viens-tu ? Et Satan répondit à l’Éternel et dit : De courir çà et là sur la terre et de m’y promener.
8Et l’Éternel dit à Satan : As-tu considéré mon serviteur Job, qu’il n’y a sur la terre aucun homme comme lui, parfait et droit, craignant Dieu, et se retirant du mal ?
9Et Satan répondit à l’Éternel et dit : Est-ce pour rien que Job craint Dieu ?
10Ne l’as-tu pas, toi, entouré de toutes parts d’une haie de protection, lui, et sa maison, et tout ce qui lui appartient ? Tu as béni le travail de ses mains, et tu as fait abonder son avoir sur la terre.
11Mais étends ta main et touche à tout ce qu’il a : [tu verras] s’il ne te maudit pas en face.
12Et l’Éternel dit à Satan : Voici, tout ce qu’il a est en ta main, seulement tu n’étendras pas ta main sur lui. Et Satan sortit de la présence de l’Éternel.
13Et, un jour, il arriva que ses fils et ses filles mangeaient et buvaient du vin dans la maison de leur frère premier-né ;
14et un messager vint à Job et dit : Les bœufs labouraient et les ânesses paissaient auprès d’eux,
15et ceux de Sheba sont tombés [sur eux] et les ont pris, et ils ont frappé les jeunes hommes par le tranchant de l’épée ; et j’ai échappé, moi seul, pour te l’annoncer.
16Celui-ci parlait encore, qu’un autre vint et dit : Le feu de Dieu est tombé du ciel et a brûlé les brebis et les jeunes hommes, et les a consumés ; et j’ai échappé, moi seul, pour te l’annoncer.
17Celui-ci parlait encore, qu’un autre vint et dit : Les Chaldéens ont formé trois bandes, et se sont jetés sur les chameaux et les ont pris, et ils ont frappé les jeunes hommes par le tranchant de l’épée ; et j’ai échappé, moi seul, pour te l’annoncer.
18Celui-ci parlait encore, qu’un autre vint et dit : Tes fils et tes filles mangeaient et buvaient du vin dans la maison de leur frère premier-né,
19et voici, un grand vent est venu d’au-delà du désert et a donné contre les quatre coins de la maison, et elle est tombée sur les jeunes gens et ils sont morts ; et j’ai échappé, moi seul, pour te l’annoncer.
20Et Job se leva, et déchira sa robe, et rasa sa tête, et se jeta à terre et se prosterna.
21Et il dit : Nu je suis sorti du sein de ma mère, et nu j’y retournerai ; l’Éternel a donné, et l’Éternel a pris ; que le nom de l’Éternel soit béni !
22En tout cela Job ne pécha pas, et n’attribua rien à Dieu qui soit inconvenable.

1HUBO un varón en tierra de Hus, llamado Job; y era este hombre perfecto y recto, y temeroso de Dios, y apartado del mal.
2Y naciéronle siete hijos y tres hijas.
3Y su hacienda era siete mil ovejas, y tres mil camellos, y quinientas yuntas de bueyes, y quinientas asnas, y muchísimos criados: y era aquel varón grande más que todos los Orientales.
4E iban sus hijos y hacían banquetes en sus casas, cada uno en su día; y enviaban á llamar sus tres hermanas, para que comiesen y bebiesen con ellos.
5Y acontecía que, habiendo pasado en turno los días del convite, Job enviaba y santificábalos, y levantábase de mañana y ofrecía holocaustos conforme al número de todos ellos. Porque decía Job: Quizá habrán pecado mis hijos, y habrán blasfemado á Dios en sus corazones. De esta manera hacía todos los días.
6Y un día vinieron los hijos de Dios á presentarse delante de Jehová, entre los cuales vino también Satán.
7Y dijo Jehová á Satán: ¿De dónde vienes? Y respondiendo Satán á Jehová, dijo: De rodear la tierra, y de andar por ella.
8Y Jehová dijo á Satán: ¿No has considerado á mi siervo Job, que no hay otro como él en la tierra, varón perfecto y recto, temeroso de Dios, y apartado de mal?
9Y respondiendo Satán á Jehová, dijo: ¿Teme Job á Dios de balde?
10¿No le has tú cercado á él, y á su casa, y á todo lo que tiene en derredor? Al trabajo de sus manos has dado bendición; por tanto su hacienda ha crecido sobre la tierra.
11Mas extiende ahora tu mano, y toca á todo lo que tiene, y verás si no te blasfema en tu rostro.
12Y dijo Jehová á Satán: He aquí, todo lo que tiene está en tu mano: solamente no pongas tu mano sobre él. Y salióse Satán de delante de Jehová.
13Y un día aconteció que sus hijos é hijas comían y bebían vino en casa de su hermano el primogénito,
14Y vino un mensajero á Job, que le dijo: Estando arando los bueyes, y las asnas paciendo cerca de ellos,
15Acometieron los Sabeos, y tomáronlos, é hirieron á los mozos á filo de espada: solamente escapé yo para traerte las nuevas.
16Aun estaba éste hablando, y vino otro que dijo: Fuego de Dios cayó del cielo, que quemó las ovejas y los mozos, y los consumió: solamente escapé yo solo para traerte las nuevas.
17Todavía estaba éste hablando, y vino otro que dijo: Los Caldeos hicieron tres escuadrones, y dieron sobre los camellos, y tomáronlos, é hirieron á los mozos á filo de espada; y solamente escapé yo solo para traerte las nuevas.
18Entre tanto que éste hablaba, vino otro que dijo: Tus hijos y tus hijas estaban comiendo y bebiendo vino en casa de su hermano el primogénito;
19Y he aquí un gran viento que vino del lado del desierto, é hirió las cuatro esquinas de la casa, y cayó sobre los mozos, y murieron; y solamente escapé yo solo para traerte las nuevas.
20Entonces Job se levantó, y rasgó su manto, y trasquiló su cabeza, y cayendo en tierra adoró;
21Y dijo: Desnudo salí del vientre de mi madre, y desnudo tornaré allá. Jehová dió, y Jehová quitó: sea el nombre de Jehová bendito.
22En todo esto no pecó Job, ni atribuyó á Dios despropósito alguno.
King James Version
1There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil.
2And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.
3His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.
4And his sons went and feasted in their houses, every one his day; and sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.
5And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.
6Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.
7And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
8And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?
9Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?
10Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.
11But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.
12And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.
13And there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house:
14And there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them:
15And the Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
16While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
17While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made out three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have carried them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
18While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house:
19And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
20Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped,
21And said, Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.
22In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.
World English Bible
1There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job. That man was blameless and upright, and one who feared God, and turned away from evil.
2There were born to him seven sons and three daughters.
3His possessions also were seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred female donkeys, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the children of the east.
4His sons went and held a feast in the house of each one on his birthday; and they sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.
5It was so, when the days of their feasting had run their course, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, “It may be that my sons have sinned, and renounced God in their hearts.” Job did so continually.
6Now on the day when God’s sons came to present themselves before the LORD, Satan also came among them.
7The LORD said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, “From going back and forth in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.”
8The LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant, Job? For there is no one like him in the earth, a blameless and an upright man, one who fears God, and turns away from evil.”
9Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, “Does Job fear God for nothing?
10Haven’t you made a hedge around him, and around his house, and around all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.
11But stretch out your hand now, and touch all that he has, and he will renounce you to your face.”
12The LORD said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your power. Only on himself don’t stretch out your hand.” So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.
13It fell on a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house,
14that a messenger came to Job, and said, “The oxen were plowing, and the donkeys feeding beside them,
15and the Sabeans attacked, and took them away. Yes, they have killed the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.”
16While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “The fire of God has fallen from the sky, and has burned up the sheep and the servants, and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you.”
17While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “The Chaldeans made three bands, and swept down on the camels, and have taken them away, yes, and killed the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell you.”
18While he was still speaking, there came also another, and said, “Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house,
19and behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young men, and they are dead. I alone have escaped to tell you.”
20Then Job arose, and tore his robe, and shaved his head, and fell down on the ground, and worshiped.
21He said, “Naked I came out of my mother’s womb, and naked will I return there. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away. Blessed be the LORD’s name.”
22In all this, Job didn’t sin, nor charge God with wrongdoing.
