Y RESPONDIÓ Job, y dijo:
But Job answered and said,

«Escúchenme; déjenme hablar, y luego sigan con sus burlas.
Oid atentamente mi palabra, y sea esto vuestros consuelos.
Hear diligently my speech, and let this be your consolations.
“Listen diligently to my speech. Let this be your consolation.

Soportadme, y yo hablaré; y después que hubiere hablado, escarneced.
Suffer me that I may speak; and after that I have spoken, mock on.
Allow me, and I also will speak. After I have spoken, mock on.
»De Dios me quejo, y no del hombre. Con razón tengo el espíritu tan atribulado:
¿Hablo yo á algún hombre? y ¿por qué no se ha de angustiar mi espíritu?
As for me, is my complaint to man? and if it were so, why should not my spirit be troubled?
As for me, is my complaint to man? Why shouldn’t I be impatient?
Mírenme horrorizados y tápense la boca con la mano.
Miradme, y espantaos, y poned la mano sobre la boca.
Mark me, and be astonished, and lay your hand upon your mouth.
Look at me, and be astonished. Lay your hand on your mouth.
Hasta yo me asusto al verme, el horror se apodera de mí, y me estremezco.
Aun yo mismo, cuando me acuerdo, me asombro, y toma temblor mi carne.
Even when I remember I am afraid, and trembling taketh hold on my flesh.
When I remember, I am troubled. Horror takes hold of my flesh.
La verdad es que los malos llegan a una agradable ancianidad, se engrandecen y se hacen poderosos.
¿Por qué viven los impíos, y se envejecen, y aun crecen en riquezas?
Wherefore do the wicked live, become old, yea, are mighty in power?
“Why do the wicked live, become old, yes, and grow mighty in power?
Alcanzan a ver a sus hijos convertidos en hombres en torno suyo, así como a sus nietos.
Su simiente con ellos, compuesta delante de ellos; y sus renuevos delante de sus ojos.
Their seed is established in their sight with them, and their offspring before their eyes.
Their child is established with them in their sight, their offspring before their eyes.
Sus casas están a salvo de todo temor, y Dios no los castiga.
Sus casas seguras de temor, ni hay azote de Dios sobre ellos.
Their houses are safe from fear, neither is the rod of God upon them.

Su ganado se reproduce,
Sus vacas conciben, no abortan; paren sus vacas, y no malogran su cría.

Salen sus chiquitos como manada, y sus hijos andan saltando.
They send forth their little ones like a flock, and their children dance.

y pasan el tiempo entre cantos y danzas. Nadan en riquezas y de nada tienen que privarse; son afortunados hasta el final.
Al son de tamboril y de cítara saltan, y se huelgan al son del órgano.
They take the timbrel and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the organ.
They sing to the tambourine and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the pipe.

Gastan sus días en bien, y en un momento descienden á la sepultura.
They spend their days in wealth, and in a moment go down to the grave.
They spend their days in prosperity. In an instant they go down to Sheol.
Todo esto no obstante que han expulsado a Dios de su vida, y no quieren nada con él ni con lo que manda.
Dicen pues á Dios: Apártate de nosotros, que no queremos el conocimiento de tus caminos.
Therefore they say unto God, Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of thy ways.
They tell God, ‘Depart from us, for we don’t want to know about your ways.
“¿Quién es el Dios Todopoderoso?”, dicen burlándose. “¿Por qué tenemos que obedecerlo? ¿Qué ganaremos con eso?”.
¿Quién es el Todopoderoso, para que le sirvamos? ¿y de qué nos aprovechará que oremos á él?
What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? and what profit should we have, if we pray unto him?
What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? What profit should we have, if we pray to him?’
Miren, ¡cuanto el rico toca se convierte en oro! Pero yo me niego a tratar siquiera con gente así.
He aquí que su bien no está en manos de ellos: el consejo de los impíos lejos esté de mí.
Lo, their good is not in their hand: the counsel of the wicked is far from me.
Behold, their prosperity is not in their hand. The counsel of the wicked is far from me.
»Sin embargo, los ricos se quedan tan campantes como siempre. Jamás tienen tribulaciones, y Dios se olvida de ellos al distribuir sus dolores y su ira.
¡Oh cuántas veces la lámpara de los impíos es apagada, y viene sobre ellos su quebranto, y Dios en su ira les reparte dolores!
How oft is the candle of the wicked put out! and how oft cometh their destruction upon them! God distributeth sorrows in his anger.
“How often is it that the lamp of the wicked is put out, that their calamity comes on them, that God distributes sorrows in his anger?
¿Son arrastrados como paja por el viento? ¿Los arrasa la tormenta? ¡Jamás!
Serán como la paja delante del viento, y como el tamo que arrebata el torbellino.
They are as stubble before the wind, and as chaff that the storm carrieth away.
How often is it that they are as stubble before the wind, as chaff that the storm carries away?
“Bueno”, dirán ustedes, “por lo menos a sus hijos los castiga Dios”. ¡Pero yo digo que Dios debe castigar al que peca y no a los hijos de este! Que sienta el castigo en su propia carne.
Dios guardará para sus hijos su violencia; y le dará su pago, para que conozca.
God layeth up his iniquity for his children: he rewardeth him, and he shall know it.
You say, ‘God lays up his iniquity for his children.’ Let him recompense it to himself, that he may know it.
Sí, que sea destruido por su maldad. Que beba bastante de la ira del Todopoderoso,
Verán sus ojos su quebranto, y beberá de la ira del Todopoderoso.
His eyes shall see his destruction, and he shall drink of the wrath of the Almighty.
Let his own eyes see his destruction. Let him drink of the wrath of the Almighty.
porque cuando esté muerto, ¿qué más le da lo que le pase a su familia?
Porque ¿qué deleite tendrá él de su casa después de sí, siendo cortado el número de sus meses?
For what pleasure hath he in his house after him, when the number of his months is cut off in the midst?
For what does he care for his house after him, when the number of his months is cut off?
»Pero, ¿quién podrá reprender a Dios, el supremo juez?
¿Enseñará alguien á Dios sabiduría, juzgando él á los que están elevados?
Shall any teach God knowledge? seeing he judgeth those that are high.
“Shall any teach God knowledge, since he judges those who are high?
Él destruye a los sanos, ricos, y prósperos.
Este morirá en el vigor de su hermosura, todo quieto y pacífico.
One dieth in his full strength, being wholly at ease and quiet.
One dies in his full strength, being wholly at ease and quiet.

Sus colodras están llenas de leche, y sus huesos serán regados de tuétano.
His breasts are full of milk, and his bones are moistened with marrow.
His pails are full of milk. The marrow of his bones is moistened.
Dios destruye también a los que padecen espantosa miseria y jamás poseyeron bien alguno.
Y estotro morirá en amargura de ánimo, y no habiendo comido jamás con gusto.
And another dieth in the bitterness of his soul, and never eateth with pleasure.
Another dies in bitterness of soul, and never tastes of good.
Unos y otros son sepultados en el mismo polvo; devorados por los mismos gusanos.
Igualmente yacerán ellos en el polvo, y gusanos los cubrirán.
They shall lie down alike in the dust, and the worms shall cover them.

»Sé muy bien lo que están pensando, y los planes que tienen de hacerme daño.
He aquí, yo conozco vuestros pensamientos, y las imaginaciones que contra mí forjáis.
Behold, I know your thoughts, and the devices which ye wrongfully imagine against me.
“Behold, I know your thoughts, the plans with which you would wrong me.
También sé que se preguntan: “¿Dónde está la mansión del potentado? ¿Dónde están las moradas de los inicuos?”.
Porque decís: ¿Qué es de la casa del príncipe, y qué de la tienda de las moradas de los impíos?
For ye say, Where is the house of the prince? and where are the dwelling places of the wicked?
For you say, ‘Where is the house of the prince? Where is the tent in which the wicked lived?’
Pero yo respondo: pregúntenle a cualquiera que tenga experiencia y él les dirá la verdad:
¿No habéis preguntado á los que pasan por los caminos, por cuyas señas no negaréis,
Have ye not asked them that go by the way? and do ye not know their tokens,
Haven’t you asked wayfaring men? Don’t you know their evidences,
que al malvado suele eximírsele en el día de la calamidad, y permitírsele que huya. Nadie lo reprende en público. Nadie le da su merecido. Y una guardia de honor le rinde homenaje en su tumba.
Que el malo es reservado para el día de la destrucción? Presentados serán en el día de las iras.
That the wicked is reserved to the day of destruction? they shall be brought forth to the day of wrath.
that the evil man is reserved to the day of calamity, that they are led out to the day of wrath?

¿Quién le denunciará en su cara su camino? Y de lo que él hizo, ¿quién le dará el pago?
Who shall declare his way to his face? and who shall repay him what he hath done?
Who will declare his way to his face? Who will repay him what he has done?

Porque llevado será él á los sepulcros, y en el montón permanecerá.
Yet shall he be brought to the grave, and shall remain in the tomb.
Yet he will be borne to the grave. Men will keep watch over the tomb.
Un gran cortejo fúnebre lo precede y lo sigue cuando lo conducen a la mullida tierra que lo ha de cubrir.
Los terrones del valle le serán dulces; y tras de él será llevado todo hombre, y antes de él han ido innumerables.
The clods of the valley shall be sweet unto him, and every man shall draw after him, as there are innumerable before him.
The clods of the valley will be sweet to him. All men will draw after him, as there were innumerable before him.
»¿Cómo pueden ustedes consolarme con palabras tan faltas de fundamento?».
¿Cómo pues me consoláis en vano, viniendo á parar vuestras respuestas en falacia?
How then comfort ye me in vain, seeing in your answers there remaineth falsehood?
So how can you comfort me with nonsense, because in your answers there remains only falsehood?”
