1Da antwortete Eliphas von Theman und sprach:
2Kann denn ein Mann Gottes etwas nützen? Nur sich selber nützt ein Kluger.
3Meinst du, dem Allmächtigen liege daran, daß du gerecht seist? Was hilft's ihm, wenn deine Wege ohne Tadel sind?
4Meinst du wegen deiner Gottesfurcht strafe er dich und gehe mit dir ins Gericht?
5Nein, deine Bosheit ist zu groß, und deiner Missetaten ist kein Ende.
6Du hast etwa deinem Bruder ein Pfand genommen ohne Ursache; du hast den Nackten die Kleider ausgezogen;
7du hast die Müden nicht getränkt mit Wasser und hast dem Hungrigen dein Brot versagt;
8du hast Gewalt im Lande geübt und prächtig darin gegessen;
9die Witwen hast du leer lassen gehen und die Arme der Waisen zerbrochen.
10Darum bist du mit Stricken umgeben, und Furcht hat dich plötzlich erschreckt.
11Solltest du denn nicht die Finsternis sehen und die Wasserflut, die dich bedeckt?
12Ist nicht Gott hoch droben im Himmel? Siehe, die Sterne an droben in der Höhe!
13Und du sprichst: “Was weiß Gott? Sollte er, was im Dunkeln ist, richten können?
14Die Wolken sind die Vordecke, und er sieht nicht; er wandelt im Umkreis des Himmels.”
15Achtest du wohl auf den Weg, darin vorzeiten die Ungerechten gegangen sind?
16die vergangen sind, ehe denn es Zeit war, und das Wasser hat ihren Grund weggewaschen;
17die zu Gott sprachen: “Hebe dich von uns! was sollte der Allmächtige uns tun können?”
18so er doch ihr Haus mit Gütern füllte. Aber der Gottlosen Rat sei ferne von mir.
19Die Gerechten werden es sehen und sich freuen, und der Unschuldige wird ihrer spotten:
20“Fürwahr, unser Widersacher ist verschwunden; und sein Übriggelassenes hat das Feuer verzehrt.”
21So vertrage dich nun mit ihm und habe Frieden; daraus wird dir viel Gutes kommen.
22Höre das Gesetz von seinem Munde und fasse seine Reden in dein Herz.
23Wirst du dich bekehren zu dem Allmächtigen, so wirst du aufgebaut werden. Tue nur Unrecht ferne hinweg von deiner Hütte
24und wirf in den Staub dein Gold und zu den Steinen der Bäche das Ophirgold,
25so wird der Allmächtige dein Gold sein und wie Silber, das dir zugehäuft wird.
26Dann wirst du Lust haben an dem Allmächtigen und dein Antlitz zu Gott aufheben.
27So wirst du ihn bitten, und er wird dich hören, und wirst dein Gelübde bezahlen.
28Was du wirst vornehmen, wird er dir lassen gelingen; und das Licht wird auf deinem Wege scheinen.
29Denn die sich demütigen, die erhöht er; und wer seine Augen niederschlägt, der wird genesen.
30Auch der nicht unschuldig war wird errettet werden; er wird aber errettet um deiner Hände Reinigkeit willen.

1Y RESPONDIÓ Eliphaz Temanita, y dijo:
2¿Traerá el hombre provecho á Dios, porque el sabio sea provechoso á sí mismo?
3¿Tiene su contentamiento el Omnipotente en que tú seas justificado, ó provecho de que tú hagas perfectos tus caminos?
4¿Castigaráte acaso, ó vendrá contigo á juicio porque te teme?
5Por cierto tu malicia es grande, y tus maldades no tienen fin.
6Porque sacaste prenda á tus hermanos sin causa, é hiciste desnudar las ropas de los desnudos.
7No diste de beber agua al cansado, y detuviste el pan al hambriento.
8Empero el hombre pudiente tuvo la tierra; y habitó en ella el distinguido.
9Las viudas enviaste vacías, y los brazos de los huérfanos fueron quebrados.
10Por tanto hay lazos alrededor de ti, y te turba espanto repentino;
11O tinieblas, porque no veas; y abundancia de agua te cubre.
12¿No está Dios en la altura de los cielos? Mira lo encumbrado de las estrellas, cuán elevadas están.
13¿Y dirás tú: Qué sabe Dios? ¿cómo juzgará por medio de la oscuridad?
14Las nubes son su escondedero, y no ve; y por el circuito del cielo se pasea.
15¿Quieres tú guardar la senda antigua, que pisaron los hombres perversos?
16Los cuales fueron cortados antes de tiempo, cuyo fundamento fué como un río derramado:
17Que decían á Dios: Apártate de nosotros. ¿Y qué les había hecho el Omnipotente?
18Habíales él henchido sus casas de bienes. Sea empero el consejo de ellos lejos de mí.
19Verán los justos y se gozarán; y el inocente los escarnecerá, diciendo:
20Fué cortada nuestra sustancia, habiendo consumido el fuego el resto de ellos.
21Amístate ahora con él, y tendrás paz; y por ello te vendrá bien.
22Toma ahora la ley de su boca, y pon sus palabras en tu corazón.
23Si te tornares al Omnipotente, serás edificado; alejarás de tu tienda la aflicción;
24Y tendrás más oro que tierra, y como piedras de arroyos oro de Ophir;
25Y el Todopoderoso será tu defensa, y tendrás plata á montones.
26Porque entonces te deleitarás en el Omnipotente, y alzarás á Dios tu rostro.
27Orarás á él, y él te oirá; y tú pagarás tus votos.
28Determinarás asimismo una cosa, y serte ha firme; y sobre tus caminos resplandecerá luz.
29Cuando fueren abatidos, dirás tú: Ensalzamiento habrá: y Dios salvará al humilde de ojos.
30El libertará la isla del inocente; y por la limpieza de tus manos será librada.

1Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,
2Can a man be profitable unto God, as he that is wise may be profitable unto himself?
3Is it any pleasure to the Almighty, that thou art righteous? or is it gain to him, that thou makest thy ways perfect?
4Will he reprove thee for fear of thee? will he enter with thee into judgment?
5Is not thy wickedness great? and thine iniquities infinite?
6For thou hast taken a pledge from thy brother for nought, and stripped the naked of their clothing.
7Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink, and thou hast withholden bread from the hungry.
8But as for the mighty man, he had the earth; and the honourable man dwelt in it.
9Thou hast sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.
10Therefore snares are round about thee, and sudden fear troubleth thee;
11Or darkness, that thou canst not see; and abundance of waters cover thee.
12Is not God in the height of heaven? and behold the height of the stars, how high they are!
13And thou sayest, How doth God know? can he judge through the dark cloud?
14Thick clouds are a covering to him, that he seeth not; and he walketh in the circuit of heaven.
15Hast thou marked the old way which wicked men have trodden?
16Which were cut down out of time, whose foundation was overflown with a flood:
17Which said unto God, Depart from us: and what can the Almighty do for them?
18Yet he filled their houses with good things: but the counsel of the wicked is far from me.
19The righteous see it, and are glad: and the innocent laugh them to scorn.
20Whereas our substance is not cut down, but the remnant of them the fire consumeth.
21Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.
22Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart.
23If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tabernacles.
24Then shalt thou lay up gold as dust, and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks.
25Yea, the Almighty shall be thy defence, and thou shalt have plenty of silver.
26For then shalt thou have thy delight in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face unto God.
27Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he shall hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows.
28Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways.
29When men are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person.
30He shall deliver the island of the innocent: and it is delivered by the pureness of thine hands.

1Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered,
2“Can a man be profitable to God? Surely he who is wise is profitable to himself.
3Is it any pleasure to the Almighty that you are righteous? Or does it benefit him that you make your ways perfect?
4Is it for your piety that he reproves you, that he enters with you into judgment?
5Isn’t your wickedness great? Neither is there any end to your iniquities.
6For you have taken pledges from your brother for nothing, and stripped the naked of their clothing.
7You haven’t given water to the weary to drink, and you have withheld bread from the hungry.
8But as for the mighty man, he had the earth. The honorable man, he lived in it.
9You have sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.
10Therefore snares are around you. Sudden fear troubles you,
11or darkness, so that you can not see, and floods of waters cover you.
12“Isn’t God in the heights of heaven? See the height of the stars, how high they are!
13You say, ‘What does God know? Can he judge through the thick darkness?
14Thick clouds are a covering to him, so that he doesn’t see. He walks on the vault of the sky.’
15Will you keep the old way, which wicked men have trodden,
16who were snatched away before their time, whose foundation was poured out as a stream,
17who said to God, ‘Depart from us!’ and, ‘What can the Almighty do for us?’
18Yet he filled their houses with good things, but the counsel of the wicked is far from me.
19The righteous see it, and are glad. The innocent ridicule them,
20saying, ‘Surely those who rose up against us are cut off. The fire has consumed their remnant.’
21“Acquaint yourself with him now, and be at peace. By it, good will come to you.
22Please receive instruction from his mouth, and lay up his words in your heart.
23If you return to the Almighty, you will be built up, if you put away unrighteousness far from your tents.
24Lay your treasure in the dust, the gold of Ophir among the stones of the brooks.
25The Almighty will be your treasure, and precious silver to you.
26For then you will delight yourself in the Almighty, and will lift up your face to God.
27You will make your prayer to him, and he will hear you. You will pay your vows.
28You will also decree a thing, and it will be established to you. Light will shine on your ways.
29When they cast down, you will say, ‘be lifted up.’ He will save the humble person.
30He will even deliver him who is not innocent. Yes, he will be delivered through the cleanness of your hands.”
