I was a father to the poor, and I investigated ⌞the stranger’s⌟ legal dispute.

A los menesterosos era padre; y de la causa que no entendía, me informaba con diligencia:

I was a father to the poor: and the cause which I knew not I searched out.

I was a father to the needy. I researched the cause of him whom I didn’t know.
