¡Quién me diera volver a ser como en los tiempos pasados, como en aquellos días venturosos en que Dios me tenía bajo su custodia y amparo!
¡Quién me tornase como en los meses pasados, como en los días que Dios me guardaba,
Oh that I were as in months past, as in the days when God preserved me;
“Oh that I were as in the months of old, as in the days when God watched over me;
Entonces su antorcha resplandecía sobre mi cabeza, y guiado por esta luz caminaba yo seguro entre las tinieblas;
Cuando hacía resplandecer su candela sobre mi cabeza, á la luz de la cual yo caminaba en la oscuridad;
When his candle shined upon my head, and when by his light I walked through darkness;
when his lamp shone on my head, and by his light I walked through darkness,
como fui en los días de mi mocedad, cuando Dios moraba secretamente en mi casa;
Como fué en los días de mi mocedad, cuando el secreto de Dios estaba en mi tienda;
As I was in the days of my youth, when the secret of God was upon my tabernacle;
as I was in my prime, when the friendship of God was in my tent,
cuando el Todopoderoso estaba conmigo, y alrededor de mí toda mi familia;
Cuando aun el Omnipotente estaba conmigo, y mis hijos alrededor de mí;
When the Almighty was yet with me, when my children were about me;
when the Almighty was yet with me, and my children were around me,
cuando lavaba, por decirlo así, mis pies con la nata de la leche, y hasta las peñas me brotaban arroyos de aceite;
Cuando lavaba yo mis caminos con manteca, y la piedra me derramaba ríos de aceite!
When I washed my steps with butter, and the rock poured me out rivers of oil;
when my steps were washed with butter, and the rock poured out streams of oil for me,
cuando salía a las puertas de la ciudad, y allí en la plaza me disponían un asiento distinguido.
Cuando salía á la puerta á juicio, y en la plaza hacía preparar mi asiento,

Y viéndome los jóvenes se retiraban, y los ancianos se lavantaban y mantenían en pie.

Los magnates no hablaban más y cerraban sus labios con el dedo.

Quedaban sin hablar los capitanes, y con la lengua pegada al paladar.
La voz de los principales se ocultaba, y su lengua se pegaba á su paladar:

Bienaventurado me llamaba todo el que oía mis palabras; y decía bien de mí cualquiera que me miraba;

When the ear heard me, then it blessed me; and when the eye saw me, it gave witness to me:

pues yo había librado al pobre que gritaba por socorro; y al huérfano que no tenía defensor.

Me llenaba de bendiciones el que hubiera perecido sin mi auxilio; y yo confortaba el corazón de la viuda desolada.

Era el padre de los pobres; y me informaba con la mayor diligencia de los pleitos de los desválidos, de que no estaba enterado.
A los menesterosos era padre; y de la causa que no entendía, me informaba con diligencia:
I was a father to the poor: and the cause which I knew not I searched out.

Quebrantaba las quijadas a los malvados, y les sacaba la presa de entre sus dientes.
Y quebraba los colmillos del inicuo, y de sus dientes hacía soltar la presa.
And I brake the jaws of the wicked, and plucked the spoil out of his teeth.

Con este tenor de vida decía yo: Moriré en paz en mi nido; y como la palma multiplicaré mis días.

Then I said, I shall die in my nest, and I shall multiply my days as the sand.
Then I said, ‘I will die in my own house, I will count my days as the sand.
Está mi raíz extendida junto a la corriente de las aguas, y el rocío descansará sobre mis ramos.
Mi raíz estaba abierta junto á las aguas, y en mis ramas permanecía el rocío.
My root was spread out by the waters, and the dew lay all night upon my branch.
My root is spread out to the waters. The dew lies all night on my branch.
Se irá siempre renovando mi gloria, y mi arco, o el poder mío, será de cada día más fuerte en mis manos.
Mi honra se renovaba en mí, y mi arco se corroboraba en mi mano.
My glory was fresh in me, and my bow was renewed in my hand.
My glory is fresh in me. My bow is renewed in my hand.’
Los que me escuchaban estaban aguardando mi parecer, y atendían silenciosos mi consejo.
Oíanme, y esperaban; y callaban á mi consejo.
Unto me men gave ear, and waited, and kept silence at my counsel.
“Men listened to me, waited, and kept silence for my counsel.
Ni una palabra se atrevían a añadir a las mías; y como rocío, así caían sobre ellos mis discursos.
Tras mi palabra no replicaban, y mi razón destilaba sobre ellos.
After my words they spake not again; and my speech dropped upon them.

Me aguardaban como a la lluvia los campos, y abrían su boca como hace la tierra seca a las aguas tardías o del otoño.
Y esperábanme como á la lluvia, y abrían su boca como á la lluvia tardía.
And they waited for me as for the rain; and they opened their mouth wide as for the latter rain.

Si alguna vez me les mostraba risueño, de gozosos apenas lo creían; pero no quedaba sin fruto la alegría de mi semblante.

If I laughed on them, they believed it not; and the light of my countenance they cast not down.
I smiled on them when they had no confidence. They didn’t reject the light of my face.
Si quería ir a sus reuniones, me sentaba en el primer lugar; y estando sentado como un rey rodeado de sus guardias, no por eso dejaba de ser el consolador de los afligidos.
Calificaba yo el camino de ellos, y sentábame en cabecera; y moraba como rey en el ejército, como el que consuela llorosos.
