MAS ahora los más mozos de días que yo, se ríen de mí; cuyos padres yo desdeñara ponerlos con los perros de mi ganado.
But now they that are younger than I have me in derision, whose fathers I would have disdained to have set with the dogs of my flock.

¡Ah! Cierto que tienen espaldas fuertes, pero son necios inútiles, insensatos.
Porque ¿para qué yo habría menester la fuerza de sus manos, en los cuales había perecido con el tiempo?
Yea, whereto might the strength of their hands profit me, in whom old age was perished?
Of what use is the strength of their hands to me, men in whom ripe age has perished?
Están enflaquecidos de hambre; han sido echados a los desiertos y a los páramos, desolados y tristes.
Por causa de la pobreza y del hambre andaban solos; huían á la soledad, á lugar tenebroso, asolado y desierto.
For want and famine they were solitary; fleeing into the wilderness in former time desolate and waste.
They are gaunt from lack and famine. They gnaw the dry ground, in the gloom of waste and desolation.
Comen raíces y hojas,
Que cogían malvas entre los arbustos, y raíces de enebro para calentarse.
Who cut up mallows by the bushes, and juniper roots for their meat.
They pluck salt herbs by the bushes. The roots of the broom tree are their food.
expulsados como están de la civilización. Los hombres gritaban tras ellos como quien corre a ladrones.
Eran echados de entre las gentes, y todos les daban grita como al ladrón.
They were driven forth from among men, (they cried after them as after a thief;)

Así es que ahora habitan en cañadas espantosas; en cuevas y entre rocas.
Habitaban en las barrancas de los arroyos, en las cavernas de la tierra, y en las rocas.
To dwell in the clifts of the valleys, in caves of the earth, and in the rocks.
so that they live in frightful valleys, and in holes of the earth and of the rocks.
Gritan como animales entre la maleza, apiñándose para protegerse bajo las ortigas.
Bramaban entre las matas, y se reunían debajo de las espinas.
Among the bushes they brayed; under the nettles they were gathered together.
They bray among the bushes. They are gathered together under the nettles.
Estos hijos suyos también resultaron necios, hijos sin nombre, proscritos de la civilización.
Hijos de viles, y hombres sin nombre, más bajos que la misma tierra.
They were children of fools, yea, children of base men: they were viler than the earth.
They are children of fools, yes, children of wicked men. They were flogged out of the land.
»¡Y ahora soy por tema de sus parodias! ¡Soy entre ellos motivo de burla!

Me desprecian y no quieren acercarse a mí, y no tienen empacho en escupirme a la cara.
Abomínanme, aléjanse de mí, y aun de mi rostro no detuvieron su saliva.
They abhor me, they flee far from me, and spare not to spit in my face.
They abhor me, they stand aloof from me, and don’t hesitate to spit in my face.
Porque Dios ha puesto mi vida en peligro. Estos jovencitos, tras humillarme, ahora muestran todo desenfreno ante mí.
Porque Dios desató mi cuerda, y me afligió, por eso se desenfrenaron delante de mi rostro.
Because he hath loosed my cord, and afflicted me, they have also let loose the bridle before me.
For he has untied his cord, and afflicted me; and they have thrown off restraint before me.
Este populacho me pone zancadillas y pone trampas a mis pies.
A la mano derecha se levantaron los jóvenes; empujaron mis pies, y sentaron contra mí las vías de su ruina.
Upon my right hand rise the youth; they push away my feet, and they raise up against me the ways of their destruction.
On my right hand rise the rabble. They thrust aside my feet. They cast their ways of destruction up against me.
Ponen estorbos a mi camino y hacen cuanto pueden para que me sobrevenga la calamidad, sabiendo bien que no tengo quien me ampare.
Mi senda desbarataron, aprovecháronse de mi quebrantamiento, contra los cuales no hubo ayudador.
They mar my path, they set forward my calamity, they have no helper.
They mar my path. They promote my destruction without anyone’s help.
Vienen contra mí de todos lados. Se lanzan sobre mí cuando estoy caído.
Vinieron como por portillo ancho, revolviéronse á mi calamidad.
They came upon me as a wide breaking in of waters: in the desolation they rolled themselves upon me.
As through a wide breach they come. They roll themselves in amid the ruin.
Ahora vivo aterrorizado. Me desprecian, y mi prosperidad se ha desvanecido como nube ante fuerte viento.
Hanse revuelto turbaciones sobre mí; combatieron como viento mi alma, y mi salud pasó como nube.
Terrors are turned upon me: they pursue my soul as the wind: and my welfare passeth away as a cloud.
Terrors have turned on me. They chase my honor as the wind. My welfare has passed away as a cloud.
»Tengo el corazón quebrantado. La aflicción hace presa de mí.
Y ahora mi alma está derramada en mí; días de aflicción me han aprehendido.
And now my soul is poured out upon me; the days of affliction have taken hold upon me.
“Now my soul is poured out within me. Days of affliction have taken hold of me.
Mis noches fatigosas están llenas de dolor, como si algo me perforara implacablemente los huesos.
De noche taladra sobre mí mis huesos, y mis pulsos no reposan.
My bones are pierced in me in the night season: and my sinews take no rest.
In the night season my bones are pierced in me, and the pains that gnaw me take no rest.
Toda la noche la paso dando vueltas en el lecho, enredado en mi ropa.
Con la grande copia de materia mi vestidura está demudada; cíñeme como el cuello de mi túnica.
By the great force of my disease is my garment changed: it bindeth me about as the collar of my coat.
My garment is disfigured by great force. It binds me about as the collar of my tunic.
Dios me ha derribado en el lodo. He llegado a ser como polvo y cenizas.
Derribóme en el lodo, y soy semejante al polvo y á la ceniza.
He hath cast me into the mire, and I am become like dust and ashes.

»Clamo a ti, oh Dios, pero no me respondes. Me presento ante ti, y no te dignas mirarme.

I cry unto thee, and thou dost not hear me: I stand up, and thou regardest me not.
I cry to you, and you do not answer me. I stand up, and you gaze at me.
Te has vuelto cruel conmigo, y me persigues con gran poder y fuerza.
Haste tornado cruel para mí: con la fortaleza de tu mano me amenazas.
Thou art become cruel to me: with thy strong hand thou opposest thyself against me.
You have turned to be cruel to me. With the might of your hand you persecute me.
Me lanzas en el torbellino y me disuelves en la tormenta.
Levantásteme, é hicísteme cabalgar sobre el viento, y disolviste mi sustancia.
Thou liftest me up to the wind; thou causest me to ride upon it, and dissolvest my substance.
You lift me up to the wind, and drive me with it. You dissolve me in the storm.
Y sé que tu propósito para conmigo es la muerte.
Porque yo conozco que me reduces á la muerte; y á la casa determinada á todo viviente.
For I know that thou wilt bring me to death, and to the house appointed for all living.

»Yo esperaba que mi caída se detuviera, como quien al caer extiende la mano o grita pidiendo auxilio en su calamidad.
Mas él no extenderá la mano contra el sepulcro; ¿clamarán los sepultados cuando él los quebrantare?
Howbeit he will not stretch out his hand to the grave, though they cry in his destruction.
“However doesn’t one stretch out a hand in his fall? Or in his calamity therefore cry for help?
¿Acaso no lloré yo por los atribulados? ¿No me he condolido por los pobres?
¿No lloré yo al afligido? Y mi alma ¿no se entristeció sobre el menesteroso?
Did not I weep for him that was in trouble? was not my soul grieved for the poor?
Didn’t I weep for him who was in trouble? Wasn’t my soul grieved for the needy?
Por eso esperaba yo que me viniera lo bueno, pero me vino lo malo. Esperaba la luz y vinieron las tinieblas.
Cuando esperaba yo el bien, entonces vino el mal; y cuando esperaba luz, la oscuridad vino.
When I looked for good, then evil came unto me: and when I waited for light, there came darkness.

Tengo el corazón atribulado e inquieto. Oleadas de aflicción me han asaltado.
Mis entrañas hierven, y no reposan; días de aflicción me han sobrecogido.
My bowels boiled, and rested not: the days of affliction prevented me.

Estoy ennegrecido, pero no por el sol. Me pongo de pie y grito pidiendo ayuda a la asamblea. Pero más valdría no desperdiciar el aliento, pues se me tiene por hermano de los chacales y compañero de las avestruces.
Denegrido ando, y no por el sol: levantádome he en la congregación, y clamado.
I went mourning without the sun: I stood up, and I cried in the congregation.

La voz de gozo y alegría se ha vuelto lamentación.
Y hase tornado mi arpa en luto, y mi órgano en voz de lamentadores.
My harp also is turned to mourning, and my organ into the voice of them that weep.
