Son demasiado débiles para serme útiles y están agotados.

Adelgazados por el hambre y la necesidad, tratan de comer la tierra seca en el desierto oscuro y desolado.
Por causa de la pobreza y del hambre andaban solos; huían á la soledad, á lugar tenebroso, asolado y desierto.
For want and famine they were solitary; fleeing into the wilderness in former time desolate and waste.

Allí recogen hierbas del desierto y las hojas de los arbustos, y comen las raíces de las retamas.

La gente gritaba tras ellos como si fueran ladrones. Tienen que vivir en barrancos peligrosos, en cuevas y entre las rocas.

Gritan como animales entre los arbustos; se acurrucan entre la maleza para refugiarse.

Son gente insensata, sin nombre, que ha sido expulsada de la tierra.
Hijos de viles, y hombres sin nombre, más bajos que la misma tierra.
They were children of fools, yea, children of base men: they were viler than the earth.

Pero ahora se burlan de mí en sus cantos; ¡me he convertido en un chiste para ellos!

Me desprecian y rehúyen; no dudan en escupirme a la cara.
Abomínanme, aléjanse de mí, y aun de mi rostro no detuvieron su saliva.
They abhor me, they flee far from me, and spare not to spit in my face.

Dios ha aflojado la cuerda de mi arco y me ha humillado.
Porque Dios desató mi cuerda, y me afligió, por eso se desenfrenaron delante de mi rostro.
Because he hath loosed my cord, and afflicted me, they have also let loose the bridle before me.
For he has untied his cord, and afflicted me; and they have thrown off restraint before me.
La chusma se levanta contra mí, y me hace correr; como una ciudad sitiada planifican formas de destruirme.
A la mano derecha se levantaron los jóvenes; empujaron mis pies, y sentaron contra mí las vías de su ruina.
Upon my right hand rise the youth; they push away my feet, and they raise up against me the ways of their destruction.
On my right hand rise the rabble. They thrust aside my feet. They cast their ways of destruction up against me.
Cortan mi vía de escape; provocan mi caída y lo hacen sin ayuda de nadie.
Mi senda desbarataron, aprovecháronse de mi quebrantamiento, contra los cuales no hubo ayudador.
They mar my path, they set forward my calamity, they have no helper.
They mar my path. They promote my destruction without anyone’s help.
Entran por una amplia brecha; se precipitan mientras el muro se derrumba.
Vinieron como por portillo ancho, revolviéronse á mi calamidad.
They came upon me as a wide breaking in of waters: in the desolation they rolled themselves upon me.
As through a wide breach they come. They roll themselves in amid the ruin.
Me invaden los terrores; mi honor se lo lleva el viento; mi salvación se desvanece como una nube.
Hanse revuelto turbaciones sobre mí; combatieron como viento mi alma, y mi salud pasó como nube.
Terrors are turned upon me: they pursue my soul as the wind: and my welfare passeth away as a cloud.
Terrors have turned on me. They chase my honor as the wind. My welfare has passed away as a cloud.
Y ahora mi vida se desvanece; cada día la desesperación me atenaza.
Y ahora mi alma está derramada en mí; días de aflicción me han aprehendido.
And now my soul is poured out upon me; the days of affliction have taken hold upon me.

Por la noche mis huesos agonizan; el dolor me roe y no cesa.
De noche taladra sobre mí mis huesos, y mis pulsos no reposan.
My bones are pierced in me in the night season: and my sinews take no rest.

Dios me agarra bruscamente por la ropa; me tira del cuello de la camisa.
Con la grande copia de materia mi vestidura está demudada; cíñeme como el cuello de mi túnica.
By the great force of my disease is my garment changed: it bindeth me about as the collar of my coat.
My garment is disfigured by great force. It binds me about as the collar of my tunic.
Me ha arrojado al barro; me ha humillado como polvo y ceniza.
Derribóme en el lodo, y soy semejante al polvo y á la ceniza.

¿No lloré por los que pasaban por momentos difíciles? ¿No me afligí por lo que sufrían los pobres?
¿No lloré yo al afligido? Y mi alma ¿no se entristeció sobre el menesteroso?
Did not I weep for him that was in trouble? was not my soul grieved for the poor?
Didn’t I weep for him who was in trouble? Wasn’t my soul grieved for the needy?
Pero cuando busqué el bien, sólo vino el mal, y cuando esperé la luz, todo lo que vino fue oscuridad.
