J’ai fait alliance avec mes yeux : et comment aurais-je arrêté mes regards sur une vierge ?

HICE pacto con mis ojos: ¿cómo pues había yo de pensar en virgen?

I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?

Et quelle aurait été d’en haut †ma portion de la part de ✝Dieu, et, des hauts lieux, †mon héritage de la part du Tout-puissant ?

Porque ¿qué galardón me daría de arriba Dios, y qué heredad el Omnipotente de las alturas?

For what portion of God is there from above? and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high?

La calamité n’est-elle pas pour l’inique, et le malheur pour ceux qui pratiquent le mal ?

¿No hay quebrantamiento para el impío, y extrañamiento para los que obran iniquidad?

Is not destruction to the wicked? and a strange punishment to the workers of iniquity?

Is it not calamity to the unrighteous, and disaster to the workers of iniquity?

Lui, ne voit-il pas mon chemin, et ne compte-t-il point tous mes pas ?

¿No ve él mis caminos, y cuenta todos mis pasos?

Doth not he see my ways, and count all my steps?

Si j’ai marché avec fausseté, si mes pieds se sont hâtés vers la fraude,

Si anduve con mentira, y si mi pie se apresuró á engaño,

If I have walked with vanity, or if my foot hath hasted to deceit;

Qu’il me pèse dans la balance de justice, et ✝Dieu reconnaîtra ma perfection.

Péseme Dios en balanzas de justicia, y conocerá mi integridad.

Let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know mine integrity.

Si mon pas s’est détourné du chemin, et si mon cœur a suivi mes yeux, et si quelque souillure s’est attachée à ma main,

If my step hath turned out of the way, and mine heart walked after mine eyes, and if any blot hath cleaved to mine hands;

Que je sème et qu’un autre mange, et que mes rejetons soient déracinés !…

Siembre yo, y otro coma, y mis verduras sean arrancadas.

Then let me sow, and let another eat; yea, let my offspring be rooted out.

Si mon cœur s’est laissé attirer vers une femme et que j’aie fait le guet à la porte de mon prochain,

Si fué mi corazón engañado acerca de mujer, y si estuve acechando á la puerta de mi prójimo:

Que ma femme tourne la meule pour un autre, et que d’autres se penchent sur elle ;

Muela para otro mi mujer, y sobre ella otros se encorven.

Then let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her.

Car c’est là une infamie, et une iniquité punissable par les juges :

Porque es maldad é iniquidad, que han de castigar los jueces.

For this is an heinous crime; yea, it is an iniquity to be punished by the judges.

Car c’est un feu qui dévore jusque dans l’abîme et qui détruirait par la racine tout mon revenu…

Porque es fuego que devoraría hasta el sepulcro, y desarraigaría toda mi hacienda.

Si j’ai méprisé le droit de mon serviteur ou de ma servante quand ils contestaient avec moi,

Si hubiera tenido en poco el derecho de mi siervo y de mi sierva, cuando ellos pleitearan conmigo,

If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant, when they contended with me;

Que ferais-je quand ✶Dieu se lèverait ? et s’il me visitait, que lui répondrais-je ?

¿Qué haría yo cuando Dios se levantase? y cuando él visitara, ¿qué le respondería yo?

What then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?

Celui qui m’a fait dans le sein de ma mère, ne les a-t-il pas faits †eux aussi, et un seul et même †Dieu ne nous a-t-il pas formés dans la matrice ?…

El que en el vientre me hizo á mí, ¿no lo hizo á él? ¿y no nos dispuso uno mismo en la matriz?

Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb?

Si j’ai refusé aux misérables leur désir, si j’ai fait défaillir les yeux de la veuve ;

Si estorbé el contento de los pobres, é hice desfallecer los ojos de la viuda;

If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail;

Si j’ai mangé seul mon morceau, et que l’orphelin n’en ait pas mangé ; –

Y si comí mi bocado solo, y no comió de él el huérfano;

Car dès ma jeunesse il m’a honoré comme un père, et dès le ventre de ma mère j’ai soutenu la †veuve ;…

(Porque desde mi mocedad creció conmigo como con padre, y desde el vientre de mi madre fuí guía de la viuda;)

Si j’ai vu quelqu’un périr faute de vêtement, et le pauvre manquer de couverture ;

Si he visto que pereciera alguno sin vestido, y al menesteroso sin cobertura;

Si ses reins ne m’ont pas béni, et qu’il ne se soit pas réchauffé avec la toison de mes agneaux ;

Si no me bendijeron sus lomos, y del vellón de mis ovejas se calentaron;

If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;

if his heart hasn’t blessed me, if he hasn’t been warmed with my sheep’s fleece;

Si j’ai secoué ma main contre un orphelin, parce que je voyais mon appui dans la porte :

Si alcé contra el huérfano mi mano, aunque viese que me ayudarían en la puerta;

If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate:

Que mon épaule se démette de sa jointure, et que mon bras cassé se détache de l’os !

Mi espalda se caiga de mi hombro, y mi brazo sea quebrado de mi canilla.

Then let mine arm fall from my shoulder blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone.

Car la calamité de la part de ✶Dieu m’était une frayeur, et devant sa grandeur je ne pouvais rien…

Porque temí el castigo de Dios, contra cuya alteza yo no tendría poder.

For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I could not endure.

For calamity from God is a terror to me. Because of his majesty, I can do nothing.

Si j’ai mis ma confiance dans l’or, si j’ai dit à l’or fin : C’est à toi que je me fie ;

Si puse en oro mi esperanza, y dije al oro: Mi confianza eres tú;

If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;

Si je me suis réjoui de ce que mes biens étaient grands, et de ce que ma main avait beaucoup acquis ;

Si me alegré de que mi hacienda se multiplicase, y de que mi mano hallase mucho;

If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because mine hand had gotten much;

Si j’ai vu le soleil quand il brillait, et la lune quand elle marchait dans sa splendeur,

Si he mirado al sol cuando resplandecía, y á la luna cuando iba hermosa,

If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness;

if I have seen the sun when it shined, or the moon moving in splendor,

Et que mon cœur ait été séduit en secret, et que ma bouche ait embrassé ma main, –

Y mi corazón se engañó en secreto, y mi boca besó mi mano:

And my heart hath been secretly enticed, or my mouth hath kissed my hand:

and my heart has been secretly enticed, and my hand threw a kiss from my mouth;

Cela aussi serait une iniquité punissable par le juge, car j’aurais renié le ✶Dieu qui est en haut ;…

Esto también fuera maldad juzgada; porque habría negado al Dios soberano.

This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above.

Si je me suis réjoui dans la calamité de celui qui me haïssait, si j’ai été ému de joie lorsque le malheur l’a trouvé ; –

Si me alegré en el quebrantamiento del que me aborrecía, y me regocijé cuando le halló el mal;

If I rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him:

Même je n’ai pas permis à ma bouche de pécher, de demander sa vie par une exécration ;…

(Que ni aun entregué al pecado mi paladar, pidiendo maldición para su alma;)

Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul.

(I have certainly not allowed my mouth to sin by asking his life with a curse);

Si les gens de ma tente n’ont pas dit : Qui trouvera quelqu’un qui n’ait pas été rassasié de la chair de ses bêtes ? –

Cuando mis domésticos decían: ¡Quién nos diese de su carne! nunca nos hartaríamos.

If the men of my tabernacle said not, Oh that we had of his flesh! we cannot be satisfied.

if the men of my tent have not said, ‘Who can find one who has not been filled with his meat?’

L’étranger ne passait pas la nuit dehors, j’ouvrais ma porte sur le chemin ;…

El extranjero no tenía fuera la noche; mis puertas abría al caminante.

The stranger did not lodge in the street: but I opened my doors to the traveller.

(the foreigner has not camped in the street, but I have opened my doors to the traveler);

Si j’ai couvert ma transgression comme Adam, en cachant mon iniquité dans mon sein,

Si encubrí, como los hombres mis prevaricaciones, escondiendo en mi seno mi iniquidad;

If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom:

if like Adam I have covered my transgressions, by hiding my iniquity in my heart,

Parce que je craignais la grande multitude, et que le mépris des familles me faisait peur, et que je sois resté dans le silence et ne sois pas sorti de ma porte…

Porque quebrantaba á la gran multitud, y el menosprecio de las familias me atemorizó, y callé, y no salí de mi puerta:

Did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and went not out of the door?

because I feared the great multitude, and the contempt of families terrified me, so that I kept silence, and didn’t go out of the door—

Oh ! si j’avais quelqu’un pour m’écouter ! Voici ma signature. Que le Tout-puissant me réponde, et que ma partie adverse fasse un écrit !

¡Quién me diera quien me oyese! He aquí mi impresión es que el Omnipotente testificaría por mí, aunque mi adversario me hiciera el proceso.

Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that mine adversary had written a book.

oh that I had one to hear me! Behold, here is my signature! Let the Almighty answer me! Let the accuser write my indictment!

Ne le porterais-je pas sur mon épaule ? Ne le lierais-je pas sur moi comme une couronne ?

Ciertamente yo lo llevaría sobre mi hombro, y me lo ataría en lugar de corona.

Surely I would take it upon my shoulder, and bind it as a crown to me.

Surely I would carry it on my shoulder, and I would bind it to me as a crown.

Je lui déclarerais le nombre de mes pas ; comme un prince je m’approcherais de lui…

Yo le contaría el número de mis pasos, y como príncipe me llegaría á él.

I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him.

Si ma terre crie contre moi, et que ses sillons pleurent ensemble,

Si mi tierra clama contra mí, y lloran todos sus surcos;

If my land cry against me, or that the furrows likewise thereof complain;

Si j’en ai mangé le revenu sans argent, et que j’aie tourmenté à mort l’âme de ses possesseurs,

Si comí su sustancia sin dinero, ó afligí el alma de sus dueños;

If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:

if I have eaten its fruits without money, or have caused its owners to lose their life,

Que les épines croissent au lieu de froment, et l’ivraie au lieu d’orge ! Les paroles de Job sont finies.

En lugar de trigo me nazcan abrojos, y espinas en lugar de cebada. Acábanse las palabras de Job.

Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.
