Ich habe mit meinen Augen einen Bund gemacht, und wie hätte ich auf eine Jungfrau geblickt!

HICE pacto con mis ojos: ¿cómo pues había yo de pensar en virgen?

I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?

“I made a covenant with my eyes; how then should I look lustfully at a young woman?

Denn was wäre das Teil Gottes von oben gewesen, und das Erbe des Allmächtigen aus den Höhen?

Porque ¿qué galardón me daría de arriba Dios, y qué heredad el Omnipotente de las alturas?

For what portion of God is there from above? and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high?

Ist nicht Verderben für den Ungerechten, und Mißgeschick für die, welche Frevel tun?

¿No hay quebrantamiento para el impío, y extrañamiento para los que obran iniquidad?

Is not destruction to the wicked? and a strange punishment to the workers of iniquity?

Is it not calamity to the unrighteous, and disaster to the workers of iniquity?

Sieht er nicht meine Wege und zählt alle meine Schritte?

¿No ve él mis caminos, y cuenta todos mis pasos?

Doth not he see my ways, and count all my steps?

Wenn ich mit Falschheit umgegangen bin und mein Fuß dem Truge zugeeilt ist, -

Si anduve con mentira, y si mi pie se apresuró á engaño,

If I have walked with vanity, or if my foot hath hasted to deceit;

“If I have walked with falsehood, and my foot has hurried to deceit

er wäge mich auf der Waage der Gerechtigkeit, und Gott wird meine Unsträflichkeit erkennen,

Péseme Dios en balanzas de justicia, y conocerá mi integridad.

Let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know mine integrity.

wenn mein Schritt von dem Wege abgebogen, und mein Herz meinen Augen gefolgt ist, und an meinen Händen ein Makel kleben blieb:

Si mis pasos se apartaron del camino, y si mi corazón se fué tras mis ojos, y si algo se apegó á mis manos,

If my step hath turned out of the way, and mine heart walked after mine eyes, and if any blot hath cleaved to mine hands;

if my step has turned out of the way, if my heart walked after my eyes, if any defilement has stuck to my hands,

so möge ich säen, und ein anderer essen, und meine Sprößlinge mögen entwurzelt werden!

Siembre yo, y otro coma, y mis verduras sean arrancadas.

Then let me sow, and let another eat; yea, let my offspring be rooted out.

Wenn mein Herz zu einem Weibe verlockt worden ist und ich an der Tür meines Nächsten gelauert habe:

Si fué mi corazón engañado acerca de mujer, y si estuve acechando á la puerta de mi prójimo:

If mine heart have been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbour’s door;

“If my heart has been enticed to a woman, and I have laid wait at my neighbor’s door,

so möge mein Weib für einen anderen mahlen, und andere mögen sich über sie beugen!

Muela para otro mi mujer, y sobre ella otros se encorven.

Then let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her.

Denn das ist eine Schandtat, und das eine Missetat für die Richter.

Porque es maldad é iniquidad, que han de castigar los jueces.

For this is an heinous crime; yea, it is an iniquity to be punished by the judges.

Denn ein Feuer ist es, das bis zum Abgrund frißt, und das meinen ganzen Ertrag entwurzeln würde.

Porque es fuego que devoraría hasta el sepulcro, y desarraigaría toda mi hacienda.

For it is a fire that consumeth to destruction, and would root out all mine increase.

Wenn ich das Recht meines Knechtes und meiner Magd mißachtete, als sie mit mir stritten:

Si hubiera tenido en poco el derecho de mi siervo y de mi sierva, cuando ellos pleitearan conmigo,

If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant, when they contended with me;

“If I have despised the cause of my male servant or of my female servant, when they contended with me,

was wollte ich dann tun, wenn Gott sich erhöbe; und wenn er untersuchte, was ihm erwidern?

¿Qué haría yo cuando Dios se levantase? y cuando él visitara, ¿qué le respondería yo?

What then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?

Hat nicht er, der mich im Mutterleibe bereitete, auch ihn bereitet, und hat nicht einer im Schoße uns gebildet?

El que en el vientre me hizo á mí, ¿no lo hizo á él? ¿y no nos dispuso uno mismo en la matriz?

Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb?

Wenn ich den Armen ihr Begehr versagte, und die Augen der Witwe verschmachten ließ,

Si estorbé el contento de los pobres, é hice desfallecer los ojos de la viuda;

If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail;

und aß meinen Bissen allein, so daß der Verwaiste nicht davon gegessen hat-

Y si comí mi bocado solo, y no comió de él el huérfano;

ist er doch von meiner Jugend an bei mir aufgewachsen, wie bei einem Vater, und von meiner Mutter Leibe an habe ich sie geleitet; -

(Porque desde mi mocedad creció conmigo como con padre, y desde el vientre de mi madre fuí guía de la viuda;)

(For from my youth he was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided her from my mother’s womb;)

wenn ich jemand umkommen sah aus Mangel an Kleidung, und den Dürftigen ohne Decke,

Si he visto que pereciera alguno sin vestido, y al menesteroso sin cobertura;

If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering;

if I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or that the needy had no covering;

wenn seine Lenden mich nicht gesegnet haben, und er mit der Wolle meiner Lämmer sich nicht erwärmte;

Si no me bendijeron sus lomos, y del vellón de mis ovejas se calentaron;

If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;

if his heart hasn’t blessed me, if he hasn’t been warmed with my sheep’s fleece;

wenn ich meine Hand geschwungen über eine Waise, weil ich im Tore meinen Beistand sah:

Si alcé contra el huérfano mi mano, aunque viese que me ayudarían en la puerta;

If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate:

if I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, because I saw my help in the gate;

so falle meine Schulter aus ihrem Blatt, und mein Arm werde abgebrochen von der Röhre!

Mi espalda se caiga de mi hombro, y mi brazo sea quebrado de mi canilla.

Then let mine arm fall from my shoulder blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone.

Denn das Verderben Gottes war mir ein Schrecken, und vor seiner Erhabenheit vermochte ich nichts.

Porque temí el castigo de Dios, contra cuya alteza yo no tendría poder.

For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I could not endure.

For calamity from God is a terror to me. Because of his majesty, I can do nothing.

Wenn ich das Gold zu meiner Zuversicht gemacht, und zu dem feinen Golde gesagt habe: Mein Vertrauen! -

Si puse en oro mi esperanza, y dije al oro: Mi confianza eres tú;

If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;

“If I have made gold my hope, and have said to the fine gold, ‘You are my confidence;’

wenn ich mich freute, daß mein Vermögen groß war, und daß meine Hand Ansehnliches erworben hatte;

Si me alegré de que mi hacienda se multiplicase, y de que mi mano hallase mucho;

If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because mine hand had gotten much;

If I have rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because my hand had gotten much;

wenn ich die Sonne sah, wie sie glänzte, und den Mond in Pracht dahinwandeln,

Si he mirado al sol cuando resplandecía, y á la luna cuando iba hermosa,

If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness;

if I have seen the sun when it shined, or the moon moving in splendor,

und mein Herz im Geheimen verführt wurde und mein Mund meine Hand geküßt hat:

Y mi corazón se engañó en secreto, y mi boca besó mi mano:

And my heart hath been secretly enticed, or my mouth hath kissed my hand:

and my heart has been secretly enticed, and my hand threw a kiss from my mouth;

auch das wäre eine gerichtlich zu strafende Missetat; denn Gott droben würde ich verleugnet haben.

Esto también fuera maldad juzgada; porque habría negado al Dios soberano.

This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above.

Wenn ich mich freute über das Unglück meines Hassers und aufjauchzte, als Böses ihn traf,

Si me alegré en el quebrantamiento del que me aborrecía, y me regocijé cuando le halló el mal;

If I rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him:

“If I have rejoiced at the destruction of him who hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him

nie habe ich ja meinem Gaumen erlaubt, zu sündigen, durch einen Fluch seine Seele zu fordern; -

(Que ni aun entregué al pecado mi paladar, pidiendo maldición para su alma;)

Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul.

(I have certainly not allowed my mouth to sin by asking his life with a curse);

wenn die Leute meines Zeltes nicht gesagt haben: Wer wäre nicht von dem Fleische seines Schlachtviehes satt geworden! -

Cuando mis domésticos decían: ¡Quién nos diese de su carne! nunca nos hartaríamos.

If the men of my tabernacle said not, Oh that we had of his flesh! we cannot be satisfied.

if the men of my tent have not said, ‘Who can find one who has not been filled with his meat?’

der Fremdling übernachtete nicht draußen, ich öffnete dem Wanderer meine Tür;

El extranjero no tenía fuera la noche; mis puertas abría al caminante.

The stranger did not lodge in the street: but I opened my doors to the traveller.

(the foreigner has not camped in the street, but I have opened my doors to the traveler);

wenn ich, wie Adam, meine Übertretungen zugedeckt habe, verbergend in meinem Busen meine Missetat,

Si encubrí, como los hombres mis prevaricaciones, escondiendo en mi seno mi iniquidad;

If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom:

if like Adam I have covered my transgressions, by hiding my iniquity in my heart,

weil ich mich fürchtete vor der großen Menge, und die Verachtung der Familien mich erschreckte, so daß ich mich still hielt, nicht zur Türe hinausging...

Porque quebrantaba á la gran multitud, y el menosprecio de las familias me atemorizó, y callé, y no salí de mi puerta:

Did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and went not out of the door?

because I feared the great multitude, and the contempt of families terrified me, so that I kept silence, and didn’t go out of the door—

O daß ich einen hätte, der auf mich hörte, hier ist meine Unterschrift; der Allmächtige antworte mir! und die Klageschrift, welche mein Gegner geschrieben!

¡Quién me diera quien me oyese! He aquí mi impresión es que el Omnipotente testificaría por mí, aunque mi adversario me hiciera el proceso.

Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that mine adversary had written a book.

oh that I had one to hear me! Behold, here is my signature! Let the Almighty answer me! Let the accuser write my indictment!

Würde ich sie nicht auf meiner Schulter tragen, sie mir umbinden als Krone?

Ciertamente yo lo llevaría sobre mi hombro, y me lo ataría en lugar de corona.

Surely I would take it upon my shoulder, and bind it as a crown to me.

Surely I would carry it on my shoulder, and I would bind it to me as a crown.

Ich würde ihm kundtun die Zahl meiner Schritte, würde ihm nahen wie ein Fürst.

Yo le contaría el número de mis pasos, y como príncipe me llegaría á él.

I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him.

I would declare to him the number of my steps. I would go near to him like a prince.

Wenn mein Acker über mich schreit, und seine Furchen allesamt weinen;

Si mi tierra clama contra mí, y lloran todos sus surcos;

If my land cry against me, or that the furrows likewise thereof complain;

If my land cries out against me, and its furrows weep together;

wenn ich seinen Ertrag ohne Zahlung verzehrt habe, und die Seele seiner Besitzer aushauchen ließ:

Si comí su sustancia sin dinero, ó afligí el alma de sus dueños;

If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:

if I have eaten its fruits without money, or have caused its owners to lose their life,

so mögen Dornen statt Weizen, und Unkraut statt Gerste hervorkommen! Die Worte Hiobs sind zu Ende.

En lugar de trigo me nazcan abrojos, y espinas en lugar de cebada. Acábanse las palabras de Job.

Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.
