Job 31

A covenant had I made with my eyes: how then should I fix my look on a virgin?

HICE pacto con mis ojos: ¿cómo pues había yo de pensar en virgen?

I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?

“I made a covenant with my eyes; how then should I look lustfully at a young woman?

And what then would have been my portion of God from above? and what lot of the Almighty from on high?

Porque ¿qué galardón me daría de arriba Dios, y qué heredad el Omnipotente de las alturas?

For what portion of God is there from above? and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high?

For what is the portion from God above, and the heritage from the Almighty on high?

Is not calamity ready for the unjust? and misfortune for the wrong–doers?

¿No hay quebrantamiento para el impío, y extrañamiento para los que obran iniquidad?

Is not destruction to the wicked? and a strange punishment to the workers of iniquity?

Is it not calamity to the unrighteous, and disaster to the workers of iniquity?

Behold, he truly seeth my ways, and numbereth all my steps;

¿No ve él mis caminos, y cuenta todos mis pasos?

Doth not he see my ways, and count all my steps?

Doesn’t he see my ways, and count all my steps?

And knoweth whether I have walked with vain desires, or if my foot hath hastened after deceit.

Si anduve con mentira, y si mi pie se apresuró á engaño,

If I have walked with vanity, or if my foot hath hasted to deceit;

“If I have walked with falsehood, and my foot has hurried to deceit

Let him weigh me then in a righteous balance, and let God acknowledge my integrity,

Péseme Dios en balanzas de justicia, y conocerá mi integridad.

Let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know mine integrity.

If my step have turned aside from the proper way, and my heart have walked after my eyes, and if any blemish have cleaved to my hands:

Si mis pasos se apartaron del camino, y si mi corazón se fué tras mis ojos, y si algo se apegó á mis manos,

If my step hath turned out of the way, and mine heart walked after mine eyes, and if any blot hath cleaved to mine hands;

if my step has turned out of the way, if my heart walked after my eyes, if any defilement has stuck to my hands,

Then let me sow, and let another eat; and let what I have growing be rooted out.

Siembre yo, y otro coma, y mis verduras sean arrancadas.

If my heart have been beguiled toward a woman, or if I have lain in wait at my neighbor’s door:

“If my heart has been enticed to a woman, and I have laid wait at my neighbor’s door,

Then may my wife labor at the mill for another, and may strangers ill–use her;

Muela para otro mi mujer, y sobre ella otros se encorven.

Then let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her.

For this would be incest; yea, it would be an iniquity to be punished by the judges;

Porque es maldad é iniquidad, que han de castigar los jueces.

For it would be a fire that consumeth down to the place of corruption, and would root out all my products.

Porque es fuego que devoraría hasta el sepulcro, y desarraigaría toda mi hacienda.

If ever I cast aside the justice due to my man–servant and my maid–servant, when they contended with me:

Si hubiera tenido en poco el derecho de mi siervo y de mi sierva, cuando ellos pleitearan conmigo,

If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant, when they contended with me;

“If I have despised the cause of my male servant or of my female servant, when they contended with me,

What then could I do when God should rise up? and when he should investigate, what could I answer him?

¿Qué haría yo cuando Dios se levantase? y cuando él visitara, ¿qué le respondería yo?

What then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?

what then will I do when God rises up? When he visits, what will I answer him?

Did not he that made me make him born or a woman? and did not the same one fashion us in the womb?

El que en el vientre me hizo á mí, ¿no lo hizo á él? ¿y no nos dispuso uno mismo en la matriz?

Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb?

Didn’t he who made me in the womb make him? Didn’t one fashion us in the womb?

If ever I denied the wish of the indigent, or ever allowed the eyes of the widow to fall in vain hopes;

Si estorbé el contento de los pobres, é hice desfallecer los ojos de la viuda;

If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail;

“If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail,

Or if ever I ate my bread by myself alone, and the fatherless did not eat thereof;

Y si comí mi bocado solo, y no comió de él el huérfano;

Or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof;

(For from my youth he was brought up with me, as though we were of one father, and I have guided her as though she was sprung from my mother’s womb;)

(Porque desde mi mocedad creció conmigo como con padre, y desde el vientre de mi madre fuí guía de la viuda;)

If ever I saw any one perishing for want of clothing, or the needy without covering:

Si he visto que pereciera alguno sin vestido, y al menesteroso sin cobertura;

If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering;

if I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or that the needy had no covering;

If his loins have not blessed me, and if he have not been warmed with the fleece of my sheep;

Si no me bendijeron sus lomos, y del vellón de mis ovejas se calentaron;

If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;

if his heart hasn’t blessed me, if he hasn’t been warmed with my sheep’s fleece;

If I have swung my hand against the fatherless, because I saw in the gate those that would help me:

Si alcé contra el huérfano mi mano, aunque viese que me ayudarían en la puerta;

If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate:

if I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, because I saw my help in the gate;

Then may my shoulder fall from my shoulder–blade, and my arm be broken from the channel–bone;

Mi espalda se caiga de mi hombro, y mi brazo sea quebrado de mi canilla.

Then let mine arm fall from my shoulder blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone.

For dreaded by me was the calamitous punishment of God, and against his highness I can accomplish nothing.

Porque temí el castigo de Dios, contra cuya alteza yo no tendría poder.

For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I could not endure.

For calamity from God is a terror to me. Because of his majesty, I can do nothing.

If I have made gold my confidence, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my trust:

Si puse en oro mi esperanza, y dije al oro: Mi confianza eres tú;

If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;

“If I have made gold my hope, and have said to the fine gold, ‘You are my confidence;’

If ever I rejoiced because my wealth was abundant, and because my hand had gotten much;

Si me alegré de que mi hacienda se multiplicase, y de que mi mano hallase mucho;

If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because mine hand had gotten much;

If I have rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because my hand had gotten much;

If ever I looked at the light of the sun when he shone brightly and on the moon walking in splendor:

Si he mirado al sol cuando resplandecía, y á la luna cuando iba hermosa,

If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness;

if I have seen the sun when it shined, or the moon moving in splendor,

And my heart became misled in secret, and my hand kissed my mouth:

Y mi corazón se engañó en secreto, y mi boca besó mi mano:

And my heart hath been secretly enticed, or my mouth hath kissed my hand:

and my heart has been secretly enticed, and my hand threw a kiss from my mouth;

This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge; for thus would I have denied the God that is above.

Esto también fuera maldad juzgada; porque habría negado al Dios soberano.

If ever I rejoiced at the downfall of him that hated me, or was elated when evil befell him; ––

Si me alegré en el quebrantamiento del que me aborrecía, y me regocijé cuando le halló el mal;

If I rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him:

“If I have rejoiced at the destruction of him who hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him

But I suffered not my mouth to sin by denouncing with a curse his soul:––

(Que ni aun entregué al pecado mi paladar, pidiendo maldición para su alma;)

Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul.

(I have certainly not allowed my mouth to sin by asking his life with a curse);

If the men of my tent said not, Oh is there one that is not satisfied of his flesh; ––

Cuando mis domésticos decían: ¡Quién nos diese de su carne! nunca nos hartaríamos.

If the men of my tabernacle said not, Oh that we had of his flesh! we cannot be satisfied.

if the men of my tent have not said, ‘Who can find one who has not been filled with his meat?’

In the street a stranger had not to lodge; my doors I held open to the roadside;

El extranjero no tenía fuera la noche; mis puertas abría al caminante.

The stranger did not lodge in the street: but I opened my doors to the traveller.

(the foreigner has not camped in the street, but I have opened my doors to the traveler);

If I covered up my transgressions like a common man, by hiding in my bosom my iniquity;

Si encubrí, como los hombres mis prevaricaciones, escondiendo en mi seno mi iniquidad;

If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom:

if like Adam I have covered my transgressions, by hiding my iniquity in my heart,

Because I dreaded the great multitude, or because the contempt of families did terrify me, so that I kept silence, and dared not to go out of the door; ––

Porque quebrantaba á la gran multitud, y el menosprecio de las familias me atemorizó, y callé, y no salí de mi puerta:

Did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and went not out of the door?

because I feared the great multitude, and the contempt of families terrified me, so that I kept silence, and didn’t go out of the door—

Oh who will bring me one that would hear me! behold, here is my plea; may the Almighty answer me; and any record which my opponent may have written,––

¡Quién me diera quien me oyese! He aquí mi impresión es que el Omnipotente testificaría por mí, aunque mi adversario me hiciera el proceso.

Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that mine adversary had written a book.

oh that I had one to hear me! Behold, here is my signature! Let the Almighty answer me! Let the accuser write my indictment!

Surely upon my shoulder would I carry it: I would bind it as a crown unto me.

Ciertamente yo lo llevaría sobre mi hombro, y me lo ataría en lugar de corona.

Surely I would take it upon my shoulder, and bind it as a crown to me.

Surely I would carry it on my shoulder, and I would bind it to me as a crown.

The number of my steps would I tell him: as to a prince would I go near unto him.––

Yo le contaría el número de mis pasos, y como príncipe me llegaría á él.

I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him.

I would declare to him the number of my steps. I would go near to him like a prince.

If my land ever cried out because of me, or if its furrows wept together;

Si mi tierra clama contra mí, y lloran todos sus surcos;

If my land cry against me, or that the furrows likewise thereof complain;

If my land cries out against me, and its furrows weep together;

If I ever consumed its strength without payment, or caused the soul of its owners to grieve:

Si comí su sustancia sin dinero, ó afligí el alma de sus dueños;

If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:

if I have eaten its fruits without money, or have caused its owners to lose their life,

Then may instead of wheat, thorns come forth, and instead of barley, cockle. (Here end the words of Job.)

En lugar de trigo me nazcan abrojos, y espinas en lugar de cebada. Acábanse las palabras de Job.

Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.
